Business owners shocked at parking loss By Mike Williscraft NewsNow While some issues relating to Smithville’s on-street parking problem were crystallized Monday night, others were even more lost in a fog of confusion. The issue, which has been part of the process involved in the major overhaul of the core’s roadways. Frank Tassone, Niagara Region’s project manager, gave members of West Lincoln’s Administration/
Finance Committee a comprehensive overview of process going right back to the start. The refresher was much needed for committee members as all had noted they were not sure what was happening regarding on-street parking, including Mayor Doug Joyner who believed last month 3-5 parking spot along the “righthand yield lane” of Griffin Street were to be re-established. Business owners in the affected area and
Chamber of Commerce president Ivan Carruthers all believed the same, but such is not the case. Tassone said not only was returning those parking spots never a consideration, but the Region never received an objection of any kind from the township regarding those spots. Tassone did note that two spots, with drive-time restrictions would be returned to the area. He noted that this change was made after regional officials
“found out” the loss of the on-street spots was, after all, an issue. Jim Edwards, owner of The Guitar Loft, said he had understood council had passed a motion last year requesting the region to re-instate six of the eight original spots. “The thought that eight businesses that previously had nine spaces of on-street parking are to share two occasional spots (when they are not restricted parking spaces) is hardly helpful or
beneficial let alone a solution,” said Edwards after the meeting. Aside from the start time of portion of the meeting when the public could address the on-street parking issue – which changed meeting agendas from Public Works to Admin and then got shuffled for a lengthy in-camera session at the start of Admin – the process for public input also left one other business operator scratching her head. When Tassone left the speaker’s chair and the meeting seemed to move on, she raised her hand. Joyner came over and told her the meeting was not the forum for questions. Disheartened, she left.
Minutes later an interview with Tassone being conducted by NewsNow in the town hall lobby was interrupted so he could return to the council chamber to answer questions for Dave Willis, who addressed several concerns he had with the issue including the lack of public notice and communications. “I am shocked to hear that, but it is typical of how this matter
has been dealt with,” said McKeen, when informed others were allowed to ask questions. “I don’t understand why council has ignored the business community’s needs and helped railroad this whole thing through.” Saying the loss of the spots, 13 in total in the core, is “another nail in the coffin of downtown businesses”, Coun. Joanne Chechalk said the parking issue needs to be resolved.

Beach SUP yoga instructor Tania Mercuri does a lunge twist on a paddleboard. Mercuri is offering lessons begining next Thursday.
Experience the freedom of outdoor yoga, the sensation of a floating yoga mat and the benefits of Vinyasa Flow all in one experience. Tania Mercuri is offering stand-up paddleboard (SUP) yoga in Grimsby beginning next week. “After one class you will feel refreshed, revitalized, strong and inspired,” she said. The classes incorporate a blend of traditional yoga, core strengthening, improving balance and SUP fit. “When you go out for the first time you are learning to paddle and finding your balance so don’t be intimidated by having to learn it all at once,” said Mercuri. This is the third year she has been teaching Stand-up Paddleboard yoga in Port Dalhousie and the first for Grimsby. Classes are Thursday evenings and Friday mornings. The first class is next Thursday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. near the pumphouse at the end of Elizabeth Street. The introductory class is $25. Police bust $2M Grimsby grow op The Niagara Regional Police Guns, Gangs, and Grows Unit, the 3 District Street Crime Unit, and the Biker Enforcement Unit were investigating what appeared to be an elaborate marijuana grow operation since early June. On Monday afternoon, police executed a warrant at a property on Sobie Road in Grimsby and took several men into custody. Police seized 2,370 marijuana plants, with a potential street value of $2.3 million. Three men have been charged with production of marijuana, possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, and unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon. A fourth suspect was not part of the grow op but was on site during the raid and was also charged with one count of breach of a release order and possession of cocaine. Two more suspects, from Welland and Quebec are also being charged.

God’s love for Grimsby goes into action The Grimsby Ministerial is celebrating God’s love for Grimsby in what churches are calling “Love God, Love Grimsby.” In this beautiful town of Grimsby are some 12-15 Christian faith communities, all worshiping the same God, following the same Lord and meeting with the same hope. Ciderfest returns to Puddicombe farms Ciderfest is about to rock Puddicombe Estates Farm and Winery – country-style of course. The fourth annual, two-day country music concert, cider festival and barbecue offers a world of talent with an impressive line-up in addition to food trucks, ciders, wine and craft beer. Among those performing are Dry County, Brett Kissel, Road Hammers, on Friday night, and on Saturday Billy J. White, Brad James, Amy Churn, Bobby Wills, Jess Moskaluk and Emerson Drive will
take command of the stage. The doors open Friday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m. and wraps up at 9 p.m. On Saturday, June 27, the fun gets underway at 1 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. There are still tickets available. Time to Drum Down the Sun and welcome summer As the longest day of the year approaches, it is time once again to drum down the sun. The Summer Solstice has long been held in high esteem by many societies around the world. It started as an agrarian celebration to honour the joy people must have felt making it through a long dark winter. Crops were in and starting to grow, there was plenty of food because the vegetable gardens were producing and the days were longer. People didn’t have to gather inside and sleep so much; they could work longer, get more done and enjoy the temperatures. For centuries people around the world have marked their calendars to gather together with festivities, on this longest day of the year. Join Carla Carlson for the 18th annual Drumming Down the Sun, Sunday, June 21 at Charles Daley Park in Lincoln to celebrate the start of summer. Sophie Campbell from True Heart Yoga will be leading a gentle class, teaching you how to stretch, breathe and relax. Join Campbell on the lawn by the West Beach from 7 – 7:45 p.m. and then move over to the sandy beach for drumming which officially starts at 8 p.m. The sun sets shortly after 9 p.m. and everyone will disperse shortly after that because there are no lights at this location and the main gates are locked at 10 p.m. If it rains gather under the shelter of the pavilion. Bring lawn chairs and blankets because there is no seating. Why only in Smithville? West Lincoln and some of the antics of council and issues there have dominated this page for several weeks. This little corner spins off that this time round. Monday night, Frank Tassone of Niagara Region, told West Lincoln’s Admin/Finance Committee changes to the streetscape there were based on safety requirements and, although, some parking could be restored in the core, loss of on-street spots would happen. He said the Region did not want to “wait until someone got hurt” before making structural changes to the roadway. Why is that thinking good for Smithville – and it is sound – but not downtown Beamsville? People have been hurt, killed in fact, and yet truck traffic in the core has been absolutely unchanged for many years. Smithville gets preventative medicine? Great! But Region needs to give its collective head a shake and get truck traffic out of downtown Beamsville, yesterday. M.W.
Painfully, more of the same in WL When this on-street parking issue in Smithville came to light early last month – and yes, although the process spans back to 2012 the loss of on-street spots was not apparent to West Lincoln officials and businesses until a few weeks ago – the amount of confusion was of paramount concern. The fact that nobody on West Lincoln Council had a clue what was happening right under their collective noses was shocking. After all, it’s only the economic heart of the community which has been torn up for months and will continue to be due to a major reconstruction project. Who cares impact on the back end? We should just rejoice Niagara Region is choosing to spend some money in our municipality! That seems to be the apparent thoughts of council members because they sure are not acting as though they care. Not in the slightest. Witness Monday night’s typical West Lincoln Admin/Finance and Public Works/Recreation committee meetings. Before I go any further, it should be noted Frank Tassone from Niagara Region, who attended Monday’s extravaganza, provided excellent and comprehensive detail regarding the construction project’s process. Clearly, the ball was dropped repeatedly and often by West Lincoln Township and its officials. Tassone stressed, “At no time did the township bring forward any request regarding on-street parking and maintaining spots.”
MIKE WILLISCRAFT It should also be noted Coun. Terry Bell deserves full credit as the ONLY member of West Lincoln’s council to attend last Thursday’s Public Information Centre which updated residents on the remainder of the construction project. For a council that basically threw up its hands in May and said, “we didn’t know”, one might think they might take an extra step or two to familiarize themselves with the process BEFORE bad things happen, not months after decisions were done and locked up. And those who were on council in the previous terms have absolutely no excuse. They were there for the whole process, even back when the West Lincoln Chamber of Commerce came in and made presentations to council – armed with a petition – to raise concerns about the loss of parking, not just in the Griffin Street portion, but also along West Street and further east by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 393. Mayor Doug Joyner has thrown up his hands and said at different points, in essence, it’s the Region’s
issue. It is a regional road and Region does not want parking on regional roads. True, but in any project I have dealt with, they are flexible and understanding of the needs of member communities. They just need a local council to be paying one iota of attention, raise its collective hand and say, “Uhhh, Mr. Region, it would be detrimental to our community if we lost more than a dozen onstreet parking spots in our core area.” Not only did that not happen, but nobody on council knew what was happening. How does that happen? There are so many things in the process I have never seen before and do not understand, it is truly mindnumbing. If I was a councillor, I would be looking for a staffers’ head on a platter, unless staff did provide proper detail via reports or commentary and elected officials simply were not paying attention. And this is to say nothing of the mayor, the township’s one and only representative at the Niagara Region table who also did not know what was happening on his watch. If it were a business, people would be fired, with cause. But this is not a business. It is a multi-level bureaucracy and there are lots of places to hide, lots of opportunity to duck and let the (insert word here) hit the fan elsewhere. All the while, the businesses and by extension residents suffer the short-comings of the township.
