Prudhomme’s Landing sold High-profile, 80-acre parcel sold to Italy based developer By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The waiting is over...maybe. The iconic property known to many as Prudhomme’s Landing was sold last week to FBH Ontario, Inc., a Canadian arm of an Italian-owned firm. The 80-acre property was sold for an undisclosed price. The land has had a much-speculated future fuelled by some unique plans which never came together for a variety of reasons. Lincoln CAO said municipal officials are excited for the possibilities but realize there is a lot of work to do. “There is considerable work to do in terms of establishing a vision through the secondary planning process,” said Kirkopoulos. “That vision will consist of three parts: recreational, open space accessible by

the public, and one that allows access to the waterfront.” Next steps for the developer are to get onto the site and clean it up as soon as possible. After that, it is time to hit the drawing board, literally. “Early estimates have it in the 700unit range or slightly up from that, but it’ll be dependent on design, consultation and input with all stakeholders including the developer,” said Kirkopoulos of residential capacity. “That number may increase slightly. There will also be significant public engagement on the design of the site as well,” he added. The Town’s homework on the project is to put the finishing touches on its Secondary Plan, which has been in the works for some time. It is expected to be completed late summer or fall.

There were no real surprises and, in fact, confirmation previous uses on Jordan Museum lands had been assessed correctly, says curator Helen Booth. Public Information Centre Niagara Go Hub and Transit Stations Study Niagara Region is planning for the long term future of its communities.The extension of two-way GO Transit service to the Region is anticipated in the near future and is a critical component of achieving growth, prosperity and sustainability in Niagara. GO Transit in coordination with the Region and local municipalities has identified four future GO Transit stations in Niagara Region: located in Grimsby, Beamsville (Lincoln), St. Catharines, and Niagara Falls. The purpose of this study is to complete the planning framework and implementation program to guide the development of the four stations and surrounding areas. The goal is to create transit supportive environments that support intensification, foster economic development, encourage multi-modal transportation networks, and make efficient use of regional and local infrastructure/services. This work requires input from residents and stakeholders throughout the study to ensure that the results meet the expectations of community members and achieve the growth and sustainability goals for the Region and local municipalities. To commence the project with the community, the Region and local municipalities are holding four public consultation events, one in each municipality for which a station is being planned. The events will provide an introduction to the study, outline the study goals and objectives, provide information on best practices for station area planning and design, and begin a conversation around the vision for each station area. Attendees will be involved in helping to establish the station area vision by working with a team of designers and planners through an interactive workshop. Details regarding the public consultation event are provided below.All interested attendees are welcome. Public Information Centre Niagara Go Hub and Transit Stations Study Niagara Region is planning for the long term future of its communities.The extension of two-way GO Transit service to the Region is anticipated in the near future and is a critical component of achieving growth, prosperity and sustainability in Niagara. GO Transit in coordination with the Region and local municipalities has identified four future GO Transit stations in Niagara Region: located in Grimsby, Beamsville (Lincoln), St. Catharines, and Niagara Falls. The purpose of this study is to complete the planning framework and implementation program to guide the development of the four stations and surrounding areas.The goal is to create transit supportive environments that support intensification, foster economic development, encourage multi-modal transportation networks, and make efficient use of regional and local infrastructure/ services. This work requires input from residents and stakeholders throughout the study to ensure that the results meet the expectations of community members and achieve the growth and sustainability goals for the Region and local municipalities. To commence the project with the community, the Region and local municipalities are holding four public consultation events, one in each municipality for which a station is being planned.The events will provide an introduction to the study, outline the study goals and objectives, provide information on best practices for station area planning and design, and begin a conversation around the vision for each station area. Attendees will be involved in helping to establish the station area vision by working with a team of designers and planners through an interactive workshop. Highly trained canines join NRPS unit Today, June 16, the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) will welcome two new members to its K9 Unit. Police service dog “Ender” and police service dog “Havoc” are two new members. The NRPS will host a graduation at 9 a.m. at 110 James Street, St. Catharines for the new recruits along with their handlers, Sgt. Scott Johnstone (PSD Ender) and Cst. Donal McCann (PSD Havoc). The Niagara Regional Police Service Canine Unit has been a fully operational unit since 1987. At present, the unit consists of seven general patrol dogs and one dog dedicated solely for the detection of explosives. The Canine Unit, currently supervised by Sgt. Johnstone, is recognized throughout North America as a model in police canine development and deployment. The unit’s knowledge and expertise have been utilized internationally. Increasingly, policing agencies in the U.S. have begun to model their canine training programs after that of the Niagara Regional Police Service. Highly motivated, trained and disciplined police service dogs are an invaluable asset to police agencies, large and small. The graduating dogs are trained to detect and follow human scent, track fleeing suspects through all terrain, in light or in darkness, engaging fleeing and violent suspects, disengage after a suspect has surrendered or when ordered to do so by their handler, protect their respective handlers on cue or by command and in evidence detection.

Forestview Community on Lake Street will be hosting a free breakfast, and a free car wash at the Shell Station on Main St. Mountainview Church will hosting a free carnival for the entire community from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. New Life Fellowship will be handing out free water bottles at downtown intersections. Lakemount Community

is hosting a BBQ and will be handing out free coffee cards to local businesses and nursing homes. Centennial Baptist, right beside Nelles Public School. is offering a free family night movie at 7 p.m. showing “Paddington,” with free popcorn. Weaver tagged as Team Canada coach Shane Weaver, owner of Red Griffin Martial Arts Studio in Grimsby, has been named as part of the coaching staff for Team Canada athletes attending the World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. The five-day event includes 257 athletes from 40 Countries and is recognized by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF). It is also the only International Tournament that is supported under the UFC Banner. Weaver, is the head coach of the Fighting Griffins and is extremely excited about being able to attend the prestigious event during one of the biggest fight cards in UFC history. Along side head coach, Bill Mahood and assistant coach Lee Mein, Weaver is honoured to be invited to the team and is looking forward to learning from two of the best corners in the business. Mahood is a veteran of the MMA industry with a professional record 20 wins, 7 losses and 1 draw. He is considered to be one of the best to coach Team Canada in Amateur MMA under the International Federation. Along side him is another professional MMA athlete, Lee

He has coached at the Provincial level for 20 years and has some experience on the International level, but according to him, nothing compares to this. “I was surprised to get the invite,” Weaver said, “but with an opportunity to support our country’s best MMA fighters in a World tournament, how could I say no?” Weaver was originally scheduled to be in Florida with four of his athletes the week leading up to UFC 200, but he was able to shorten his trip and catch a flight to Vegas as soon as his athletes are done competing at the US Open. “I am so thankful that my support staff for these adventures run deep at my studio, and I am stoked to be working with such experienced coaches and athletes. Giving Back Demand grows as does need for palliative services West Niagara Palliative Care, which is better known as Rose Cottage Visiting Volunteers, is the only hospice service which sends volunteers to its clients. What started with about a dozen volunteers 30 years ago has grown to develop a roster of more than 100 volunteers who aid and support 150-200 clients per year. In all, the volunteer teams amasses nearly 6,500 volunteer hours annually. In recent years, the need has grown exponentially. From 2013 to 2014 demand skyrocketed 46 per cent. Then the follow year the demand jumped another 50 per cent. “Rose Cottage Visiting Volunteers are educated in issues relating to

palliative care and bring a personal touch to the service through compassion and support to the people we serve,” said executive director Sherry Cain. “We also provide bereavement support to the family for one year after their loved one dies with formal bereavement group held in the Spring and Fall - two six-week sessions with weekly meetings.” And thanks to fundraising and ongoing sponsorships as well as grants, the service is provided completely free of charge. “We are very proud we can offer our services free of charge to anyone living with terminal or life-limiting illness while at home, hospital, hospice or care facility,” said Cain.

Auxiliary event generates over $9,000 Dear Editor, We are extremely fortunate to be part of a community that supports West Lincoln Memorial Hospital whole heartedly. A perfect example of that support was the level of community participation in our recent Auxiliary fashion show which was a financial success raising $9,375 toward the purchase of pulmonary function testing equipment and an echocardiogram.

Next up... Nothing about developing the Prudhomme’s landing property has been or will be a simple task. There are so many variables, so many moving parts, it will seem like an arduous task to virtually all involved and will take years - but, hopefully, one day, it will be worth every second. Everyone knows about the property, how could you not? By its very location, it my be the single most prominent piece of geography in the area next to Beamers Point. Over the years, there have been many suitors. Long-time owner Ken Fowler was close to deals in the past but snags for one reason or another scuttled getting something done. Now, a sales deal is done, no restrictions or conditions, but whichever entity seeks to develop it the same issues remain. Upgrading services, working with neighbours, QEW interchange at Victoria Ave, etc etc. Best of luck to all involved. Many anticipate the results. M.W.

Make a memory on Fathers Day Rough week for sports fans, moreso for the over 50 set. Two icons - Muhammad Ali and Gordie Howe - both passing away at the ages of 72 and 88 respectively. For me, it was a strange coincidence to have Gordie die on the same day as Ali’s funeral as these two greats help form my greatest memories of my dad. My first National Hockey League game in 1970 was the Los Angeles Kings playing at The Olympia against the Detroit Red Wings. The Company my dad worked for had worked with Wings goalie Jimmy Rutherford to do some public relations appearances, so no doubt the game tickets were part of the conversation. Other than sitting in the mezzanine at the Olympia, which hung right over the ice - not unlike the end seats at the old Boston Gardens - I vividly recall the massive wall of red giants walking through the dressing room door with the huge Red Wings logo on it as they made their way to the ice. I was six. To grown ups these men looked huge, so you can just imagine my wide-eyed amazement. As the players made their way by one man looked down, tapped me on the shins with his stick, gave a wink and kept on walking. When all the players

MIKE WILLISCRAFT and people had gone, my dad leans down to me, nose to nose nearly and says, “you know who that was?” Which I clearly did not, but now his eyes were wide with amazement. “Gordie Howe,” he said. I don’t think he said another word until after the game. I didn’t realize anything about what was happening but I sure knew it was important to my dad. That is one of my earliest memories of any sort. Fast forward five years. It is 1975. My sports psyche is coming into form: Habs and Big Red Machine (Cincinnati Reds) fan. But who is this boxing guy? Again, no real idea. I am guessing until this point in time I may not have been allowed to watch boxing due to the violent nature. My parents were the type that made us scrunch down behind the backseat when Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid came on as the second feature

at the drive in...yes, this really happened. When you think about what kids see - including mine - at such young ages, this is laughable now. And if you never heard of that movie- watch it - you won’t be disappointed. My parents also didn’t let us stay up late. Strict schedule and all that. So when my dad agreed to let me sit at his foot and watch what turned out to be the Thrilla In Manila, wow, another vivid memory. We watched on big old black and white consoletype TV - first time I got to watch a fight; first time I got to stay up late. And Sunday night it was interesting to see Jimmy Rutherford hoisting the Stanley Cup as GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins. I note all this as this Sunday is Fathers Day. I think about my dad every day. It is possible these memories are so vivid as I was not fortunate enough to have him very long. Dads, get out and do something with your kids. Anything! Go for an ice cream. Take a walk at Charles Daley Park. Throw a baseball, a frisbee. Sit at a patio and have a coffee and chat with your kids. You never really know where the next memory will come from and, more importantly, you never know how many opportunities you will have to create them.
