Oosterhoff, PCs power to majority By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Taking a seat as the youngest MPP in provincial history in 2016, PC incumbent Sam Oosterhoff, 20, was returned to power Thursday in a definitive provincial election win in Niagara West. The province changed directions as the PCs took the helm from the Liberals’ 15year rule to form a majority government with 76 seats in the 124-
seat legislature and the NDP became the Official Opposition for only the second time history. Oosterhoff won the riding with 24,361 votes against NDP Curtis Fric, 13,744 votes; Liberal Joe Kanee, 4,933 votes; Green Party Jessica Tillmanns, 2,578 votes; Libertarian Stefanos Karatopis, 451 votes; and Multicultural Geoffrey Barton, 127 votes. He will have the sole
PC voice in the Niagara Region. Three of the four ridings selected NDP candidates including Jeff Burch winning in Niagara Centre, Wayne Gates in Niagara Falls, and Jennie Stevens in St. Catharines. To the west, Hamilton went NDP as well. “I am honoured by the mandate given by the constituents of Niagara West and will work each and every day for their interests,
concerns and priorities,” said Oosterhoff on Thursday while celebrating with family and supporters at the Smithville Legion. He was back at his desk Friday morning drafting a letter to be sent to Premier-elect Doug Ford, outlining priorities including a new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. “I will keep fighting until West Niagara gets the new hospital we deserve,”
said Oosterhoff, adding the list of Niagara needs includes, “GO Train service to Niagara through Grimsby, Beamsville, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls; reduced taxes on job creators, less red tape, competitive industrial hydro rates, more long-term care beds in Niagara West and a more affordable life for all constituents in the riding and across Ontario. Literacy Day event kicks off summer Families played and learned together at the Grimsby Library’s 6th annual Building Literacy Fair. There was seed planting, balloon animals, freezies, crafts, sidewalk chalk, fun literacy games and educational activities, plus much more. Parka the Parks Canada Beaver was there for a fun story time, Speech Services Niagara shared interactive games, Waste Management Niagara taught kids all about recycling, and the Play Project Parkour course got them moving as part of the Power Off and Play initiative at the Library. Lincoln setting Ontario St. reinvention base By Mike Williscraft NewsNow While in the baby steps stage, the Town of Lincoln started what will be a decades-long process of reinventing Beamsville’s Ontario Street Corridor. At Monday night’s Planning Committee meeting, officials got their first look at the “Ontario Street Vision”, a document outlining a complete inventory of all lands from Greenlane south into and including the downtown core. Noting transition in this area will be driven by developers, Mayor Sandra Easton said council wants to have its plan and infrastructure ready as new projects come on line. “Yes, there are provincial policies for planning but that does
not mean there is not opportunities for local initiatives,” said Easton, adding the consultation will be extensive, not unlike that which unfolded for Prudhomme’s Landing’s development. “We want residents to think about the kind of change they want to see. We want to give them more detail and that is what people want, detail. Is there going to be height? If so, where? It does make sense to have height in different areas so you don’t eat up all the ground.” Lincoln CAO Mike Kirkopoulos said the municipality looks at itself as a facilitator in instances such as Ontario Street. “This will take public and private sector commitment and investment,” said Kirkopoulos. “This is a long term, transfor-
mational project – that must happen with the community, not alone. We have heard the community wants to see Ontario Street evolve and change, spruced up, and beautified.” To that end, a key component could be a renovation to Rannie Square to increase its use and improve parking in the core with public washrooms added to make it a user-friendly cyclist stop. “There are things like Rannie Square that pose some great opportunities. For instance, it is close to the BDSS site, it currently houses parking for the downtown. It is close to our downtown businesses, so using it would be important,” said Kirkopoulos. The “vision” will come to full council next week.

HERE ARE OUR GOALS GOING FORWARD INTO 2019: HOUSING – Increase the availability of the Rent Supplement Assistance Program so that we can continue to support even more families and individuals than ever before. VOLUNTEERS – Engage with the community to grow and mobilize our volunteer forces; more specifically, recruiting 60 new individual volunteers, 10 business groups to advocate and volunteer, and 50 youth volunteers. FUNDRAISING – Build sustainable fundraising and partnerships to address increased program and service demands. PUBLIC RELATIONS – Develop and promote effective public awareness and education campaigns to reach and inspire new and old community members to get involved. HEALTH SERVICES – Continue in our commitment to serving all of our clients with compassion, and further investigating potential opportunities for mental health-related program funding and partnerships. DONATIONS – Continue in building and expanding our donor base to ensure the sustainability of our programs through continued community financial support. HEALTH AND SAFETY – Continue in our commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all volunteers, customers and staff, and further establish our culture of conscientiousness for each person who works, volunteers, or shops with us.

Bowslaugh Dale Richard
Passed away after a sudden illness Sunday, May 27, He was 54. 2018 at the Heart Institute in Ottawa. Predeceased by his mother Sheila, he is survived by his father Peter (Grace) and sister Elizabeth. Dale spent most of his working career at Atomic Energy of Canada/ Canadian Nuclear Labs joining them initially in 1990 where he was originally an employee at the Sheridan Park site and then later at the Chalk River site in 2008. Some of the significant contributions that Dale made during his tenure with AECL/CNL was his support to the National Research Universal Vessel Repair Project and the development of the NRU Environmental Qualification Program. Over the last two years Dale has been supporting the Near Surface Disposal Facility Project Engineering team in Deep River. Not one to sit around, Dale spent a lot of his time outdoors frequently hiking or snowshoeing in Algonquin Park, kayaking the Ottawa River or working in his garden. Dale was an avid photographer and each year he travelled to Trinidad where he spent time at an ashram and participated on an ecological project. The family will receive friends at the Vineland Chapel of Tallman Funeral Homes, 3277 King St. on Saturday, June 16th at 1 pm. A Service will be held at 2 pm with a reception to follow. While Grimsby continues to flounder with the most simple of planning tasks, the municipality to the east continues to provide an excellent example of how things should be thought out and done. Case in point, the new “Ontario Street Vision” which inventories all between Greenlane and the downtown Beamsville core, will give a quality rudder by which to steer future development in that corridor. The vision is a detailed outline of what could happen and will allow the municipality to steer new projects with an eye to making things on their wish list come true. Parking issues, traffic congestion, land uses, are all taken into consideration. These, too, are constants in Grimsby both at Winston Road and int the core. It would seem a similar assessment is approriate in Grimsby, perhaps instead of focusing on the Nelles-Lynnwood stretch near WLMH. M.W.
Ok, let’s get WLMH on front burner Hospital. Hospital. Hospital. With Premier Ford and anybody but the Liberal disaster at the helm, Niagara West has a window to collectively jump through a window of opportunity along with Hamilton Health Sciences and West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Absolutely nothing should deter time and attention away from this LONG OVERDUE (and I hate using caps in regular copy space) rebuild. Nothing! In my post election conversation with Sam Oosterhoff, it was the first thing I stressed. It was great to see he was already on top of it. He had gotten up at 6 a.m. to pen a letter to the newly elected Premier of Ontario outlining several pressing needs for this riding - with WLMH right at the top of the list. Do not construe this for a second to mean the whole thing should be built and complete in the next fouryear-term, not at all. As Sam noted, in his post-election discussion with Hamilton Health Sciences CEO Rob MacIsaac, it was pointed out there is a plan in motion. Yes, that is true, but the new provincial government can commit funding to get this thing locked onto the rails from which it will not be steered, slowed or derailed. HHS has done everything right, for years, just as WLMH predecessors did before them. When you look at the string of people who have worked tirelessly, for well over a decade in many cases, and realize just how much has gone into keeping WLMH’s heart beating (while basically in a Liberalinduced coma) is incredible. You know who you are and I don’t want to name
MIKE WILLISCRAFT a few because assuredly I would leave someone out and I do not want to do that. Just know, although the community may never realize who you are or what effort it took, they will nonetheless be appreciative for the next half century and beyond once the shiny, new WLMH is unveiled. Having covered and helped organize the rallies, sat on committees, covered the dozens of fundraising stories and many “holding pattern” announcements over 20 years, I can tell you Thursday’s PC win is our best chance for true optimism. Had the Liberals somehow weaseled their way back into power, it is likely they would have found some way to sidestep HHS’s rock solid planning process to allow them to execute everything wanted, except WLMH. Now, when the money flows around Hamilton Harbour and into Niagara via the HHS, residents can have some confidence the rebuild will continue to be front and centre of their redevelopment plans. Yes, GO is important, but it’s a fraction of what the new WLMH would mean to the area. GO will come with little or no nudging purely
off demand by external forces. In this case, the external force is Toronto, or the west side of the GTA, anyways. They usually get what they want and, luckily for Niagara, they finally see the need to reduce QEW traffic. The traffic volumes on the QE and Gardiner/Lakeshore heat things up to get political will in motion and, poof, GO gets the green light. When a minister of health is chosen, let’s get him or her down here (like people much smarter than I are not thinking about that already) and let’s showcase what is there and what it needs to be. I’ll even spring for lunch! When I think about all the hospital events in the last 10 years anyway, the vast majority have been dark and downright deflating as air continued to leak from the WLMH balloon. Maybe it is time for a WLMH Street Party, not unlike the one we did for The Tragically Hip’s last stand! Nothing but positivity! Get some speakers to tell people what will happen, get some definitives in there! Have some fun! Raise some money! Let’s go from “Condition Critical” to (and I can’t believe I am pulling out a 1945 Bing Crosby reference here, but) Ac-CentTchu-Ate the Positive!!! Hey Mark, 40 Public up for another run at an August street party? We have more time than last time and there are a ton of very supportive WLMH folks who would love to get on board! Premature? Maybe, but no time like the present. We have a window of opportunity and kicking and/or screaming let’s drag WLMH through it!!

Upper Thirty School house hosts “reunion” By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow It took 40 years, but Evelyn and Mark Michener have finally graduated from North Grimsby S.S. No.6. They’ve been industrious students of architecture, engineering, construction, planning and plumbing. And through the decades, the drywall and the dust, they’ve created a magnificent and unique home, raising a family under the bell tower that for many years summoned the Upper Thirty community kids to class. Now 40 years later the house has been sold and the Micheners are moving on, taking their memories, but leaving a big part of their hearts, family history and the dedicated labour that has allowed the beautiful
historic building to be preserved for the next chapter and a new generation. Before they go, the Micheners want to extend an open invitation to the entire community to tour the house - former students, historians, neighbours, everyone is invited to visit during an open house planned for Sunday, June 24, 1-4 p.m. Next year, 2019, marks the centennial of the Upper Thirty School and the family wants to celebrate this landmark before they move. It was a hard decision to pull up roots, but the three Michener boys, Andrew, James and Stephen are grown, and Eva and Mark reached a point where they no longer needed so much space.
The first Upper Thirty school, constructed of logs, was built around 1800. A new frame school was opened in 1859 and the new brick school was built in 1919. The school closed in 1965 and after being used by children with disabilities and the local cadet corps, it was boarded up. The open house is Sunday, June 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. at
