Tragic end for missing Grimsby man By Katherine Grant NewsNow “Jarett Scholl has been found resting in peace.” This was the Facebook post at about 1 a.m. Wednesday by his brother, Brett, who had worked tirelessly over the past five days to find Jarett. Police were called to the area of the Jordan Harbour near the Beacon Harbourside Yacht Club at about 8 p.m. Tuesday after people out fishing spotted a body in the water. It was a tragic ending to almost a week of uncertainty for the Grimsby man’s family. Jarett, who was 30, took his boat out to do
some fishing last Thursday, June 4, launching it from Grimsby JARETT at about SCHOLL 5:30 a.m. His boat was found about 12 hours later after it ran up on the beach at Charles Daley Park in Lincoln. It wasn’t unusual for Jarett to head out alone said Brett; he could handle the boat, a 15-ft aluminum Legend, on his own. After the boat was found, an immediate search along the shore of Lake Ontario was commenced by
Niagara Regional Police #8 District while a marine search was undertaken by members of the Canadian Coast Guard and members of the Niagara Regional Police Marine Unit. Brett said the police have been very supportive in their efforts to help find Jarett. On Tuesday evening the NRP’s Marine Unit recovered the body from Lake Ontario. The community had rallied in its effort to find Jarett. A Tuesday night search was organized by Brett who had also asked people to walk the area between Charles Daley Park and Victoria Avenue to
search for anything that might help locate his brother. Brett had been concerned Jarett might have been injured and was stranded somewhere in the area where the boat was found. Jarret’s death has been determined to be an accidental drowning, said Sgt. Neal Orlando of 8 District. “This was a very tragic accident but it is good that the family will have some closure,” he added. The day that Jarret went fishing the water temperature was 50 degrees with waves of about a metre in height, according to Environment Canada.
One of his fishing poles was missing, said Orlando. “It appears his line may have snagged or he got a bite and stood up to deal with it and toppled into the water. There was no tether to the kill switch on the motor so the boat would have continued to move away from him,” he said. Brett expressed his gratitude to the community for all the support his family has had and especially for those who stepped in to help in the search efforts. A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help pay funeral costs.

Smithville’s on-street parking confusion to be cleared up Monday’s Township of West Lincoln Public Works & Recreation Services Committee meeting should provide long-awaited answers on confusion surrounding Smithville’s on-street parking. In May, when it became apparent all eight parking spots where Reg. Rd. 20 peels off to Griffin Street would not be restored when the massive core construction work is done, township officials were left scratching their respective heads. Mayor Doug Joyner said he understood six of the eight spots were to be restored,
two were to be removed for safety reasons. This scenario was what Jim Edwards, owner of The Guitar Loft also understood after he attended public meetings last fall. “This will be an opportunity for all to clarify what has gone on. We will all be on the same page afterwards,” said Coun. Dave Bylsma, who chairs Public Works. He said town staff will provide an overview of how the project progressed and how the process was handled. Bylsma noted the general public will be allowed to ask ques-
tions and comment on the initiative. Public Works will come up immediately following the Admin & Finance Commit-
tee meeting which will start at 6:30 p.m. June 15. Admin & Finance, typically, lasts an hour to 90 minutes, noted Bylsma.

Have your say on plans for Cave Springs The Cave Springs area is a beautiful natural area with many interesting features including an underground ice cave and Carolininan forest. Now under the jurisdiction of The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, a property management plan is being developed. The NPCA will be holding a public workshop to gather input from the community next Tuesday, June 16 at 7 p.m. at the Balls Fall’s Centre for Conservation. The plan will also help determine appropriate levels of human activity on the property - in ways that minimize impacts on the natural environment. The NPCA is inviting anyone interested in the project to participate in this public workshop in order to provide
insight and commentary on sustainability, ecology, cultural heritage, water resources, geology, security, arts, research and education, hiking and recreation, tourism, business opportunities, partnerships, adjacent land concerns, and more. More than 100 people gathered in April at the Cave Springs Open House, marking a successful kick-off for the management planning process. This Public Workshop is the next phase of consultation for 100 acre property situated along the Niagara Escarpment. The 129.84 metre long by 15.5 metre wide cargo carrier had been built at St. Nazaire, France, and completed as Edouard Corblet in November 1950. Shipwreck service, but was quickly renamed Cabinda by the owners the first year. A sale to Norwegian interests in 1964 led to a new name of Ada. Another transaction in 1968 resulted in it becoming Snikolas under the flag of Panama. The following year, after spending all of its career in saltwater trading, Snikolas came through the Seaway for what was likely the only time. It was resold to Venturosa Neptunea SA, in 1970 and this brought the final name of Galaxy K. During a long voyage around Africa carrying rice between Calcutta, India, and Savona, Italy, a fire broke out on March 3, 1972. A blaze at sea usually does not end well and the burning 22-year-old freighter had to be beached. Fortunately, the crew was not far from the Canary Islands and Galaxy K. was run aground as a total loss. What is left of the old ship may still be there.

See the sky in a whole new way. The Grimsby Museum is hosting Starlab, a travelling planetarium from the Royal Ontario Museum. Starlab will be in Grimsby for one week only from Saturday, June 13 to Sunday, June 21. Participants will watch the night sky, view constellations and learn stories of the stars during the 45-minute show. Four shows are offered daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13, 14, 20 and 21. On Tuesday, June 16, 17 and 18, the museum is offering three public shows at 4, 5 and 6 p.m. Tickets for the public shows are available now at the Grimsby Museum. The general admission fee for Starlab is $5 per person for Grimsby Museum members plus one complimentary ticket per membership or $7 per person for non-members. Tickets for the public shows are limited to 24 persons, ages 4 years and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult. To coincide with the StarLab, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Niagara Centre will be offering Solar Viewing with telescopes which use special filters that allow us to observe the sun safely. There will be no extra change. Anyone who purchases a StarLab ticket is welcome to join in on the fun. Dutch king, Queen treat hosts royally It was smiles all around when King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands made a stop at Cosmic Plants on May 28. “What a day it was. We’re so thankful for all the many people
that were able to celebrate this Royal Visit with us,” said Cosmic Plants owner Mike van Steekelenburg. During the stop, the couple took time chat with all those on hand. “They were very generous with their time, a very personal
experience,” said Jan-Willem Stulp, who prepared their High Tea menu. “They made no requests, so I made every item as local as possible. We also presented them with a private label wine from Vineland Estates,” Stulp said.

Passed away on June 8th, 2015 at the age of 97 at Nimigon Retirement Home, Niagara Falls. Beloved wife of the late John Hopkins. Devoted mother to Bella Roddy (husband Jim), Jennifer Hopkins (husband John Hill), Deborah Hopkins (husband Al Douglas). Predeceased by daughter Anita Blake (husband Chuck). For anyone interested... West Lincoln’s Public Works Committee will be meeting this coming Monday night and, on the agenda, is supposed to be a housekeeping session to clear up all the misconceptions regarding downtown Smithville on-street parking. For sleepy Smithville, this may not seem like a huge deal, but one has to think beyond today. There are measures a municipality needs to take to ensure the viability of its commercial base. This is not about anything extraordinary. For businesses to survive, they need parking in the vicinity to make stopping convenient. A commercial base is important not just to provide local residents with shopping and service options, but to provide jobs – which makes the economic wheel go round. When a construction project is underway and township’s elected officials don’t even know if or how many parking spots will be restored that is a serious breach of public trust at worst or downright lazy at best. Well-rounded plan needed in WL Good planning and hard work, when combined, can achieve just about anything. In that vein I am going to use community centres as an example of that. Grimsby’s old Peach King Arena was on life support for years but was carefully nursed through until the Town had it financial house in order with reserves and windfall from Grimsby Power to alleviate any serious economic burden. The council of the day tacked on a 10-year tax, which concluded last year, to cover off the rest. The result, a first class facility. Lincoln, which hosted its naming and unveiling of the donor gallery on Saturday afternoon had a bit more of a struggle. Going back into the late 90s, the municipality was very much behind the eight-ball with its spending as aging infrastructure needed to be replaced but reserves and an economic plan were not in place. It has taken nearly 20 years of very good planning going back to Bruce Peever’s CAO stint which has positioned the Town to be able consider what was achieved with the Fleming Centre. A $5 million federal grant and a $4 million community capital campaign – powered by the $1.2 million commitment by the Fleming family – were key to getting things done in Lincoln. The planning and execution took years and the cart was never before the horse. West Lincoln, and I really do hate to seem like I am picking on them, needs to learn from these two

NOT because they can copy their path, but the need to recognize the work that needs to be done before any obligation for a design or cash outlay from taxpayers is considered is of paramount importance. I noted a couple of weeks go, council did the right thing by “backburnering” the whole initiative and, to a large extent, starting over. Yes, there are some reports which are already on a shelf some place, but the financial aspect – any possible grants and a solid public fundraising campaign – has to be in place with key ambassadors ready and willing to put in the herculean effort it takes (just ask Margaret Andrewes and her team) to get something like this done. It is not overstated to say it can take years. And when one considers some of the conversation at the last couple of West Lincoln council meetings where councillors note they left out major items to get down to the 6.9 per cent tax increase they approved, it is clear they are very much in the same boat Lincoln was 20 years ago.
As noted, it took Lincoln nearly that full 20 years to get out of that situation. The problems faced in West Lincoln are major growing pains. Like it or not, your quiet little municipality is growing up... quickly. That makes things even more difficult and that is not something which should be underestimated. Council will have to consider spending some money on the current Smithville Arena, to nurse it as Grimsby did Peach King, until such a point where financing and planning is in place to execute a new building which all can enjoy for decades to come. ****** It is not every day one gets to meet royalty, but May 28 was just such a day for many locals when King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands dropped by Cosmic Plants in Beamsville. “A very proud day for all of Lincoln’s Dutch Community,” said Mayor Sandra Easton. She, too, was enamoured by the royal couple whose warmth and sincerity were noted by virtually everyone I spoke to about the visit. Congratulations to the van Steekelenburgs, Cosmic’s owners, who hosted the event and showcased the very best this area has to offer. I am sure they felt a lot of pressure but by all accounts, they delivered. Great job!
