Mother and son killed

Two dead, officers injured in Vineland incident A mother and son are dead and two police officers were injured after a fire and explosion at a Vineland home Sunday night. Police were called to home on Epp Street at about 8:35 p.m. July 5 after a 911 call about a fire but as of press time have released few details about what happened or the sequence of events. There was a report of both a fire and explosion. According to a Niagara Regional Police media release on Monday, “as a result of an interaction with a person from the residence, the officers were injured.” Two police officers from Grimsby’s 8 District were taken to hospital, one by air ambulance. Their

conditions and nature of their injuries have not been released. The Lincoln Fire Department responded to the scene at about 8:43 p.m. and the fire was put down at 9 p.m. “We also got reports that there were possibly one or more explosions prior to fire department arrival,” said Lincoln Fire Chief Greg Hudson. “None occurred while we were on scene.” Firefighters entered the residence, and the bodies of a 73-yearold woman and a 50-year-old man were removed from the home. Postmortems were scheduled for Tuesday. Police did not release the names

of the victims but neighbours report the dead are Anna Schmidt and her adult son Karl. Niagara Regional Police spokesman Const. Phil Gavin said he could not release further details about the interaction in question or the injuries to the officers because of the ongoing investigation by The Special Investigations Unit. The SIU is the civilian oversight agency that investigates all incidents of death or serious injury involving police, took over the scene and were investigating. Police closed the street to traffic, though it was partially re-opened Monday morning. For updates as they are available, see Newsnowniagara.ca

sent one driver to hosptial with lifethreatening injuries. Niagara EMS, police and Lincoln Fire were dispatched to the head-on collision involving two large trucks on Victoria Avenue at 7th Avenue. Initial investigation revealed that a 50-year-old male resident of Brampton was driving a 2006 Freightliner straight truck southbound on Victoria Avenue and, in an attempt to avoid colliding with the rear of a stopped motor vehicle at the intersection of 7th Avenue, the driver swerved into the northbound lane, colliding with a northbound 2012 Kenworth dump truck. The dump truck was loaded with sand and hauling a large dump trailer, also loaded with

sand. The dump truck was being driven by a 53-yearold St. Catharines male. There were no other occupants in either of these vehicles and the damage to both was extensive. The driver of the straight truck had to be extricated by firefighters and was transported to the Hamilton Health Sciences General Site by ambulance with life-threatening injuries where he remains at this time. The driver of the dump truck suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Niagara Health System St.Catharines Site where he was treated and released. The magnitude of the collision demolished both trucks causing a large die-

sel spill. As the collision occurred on the bridge that crosses over 20 Mile Creek, it caused great concern to the environment. As a result Niagara Region, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Transportation, Niagara Conservation Authority as well as structural engineers responded quickly to contain and clean up the spill and address any structural concerns with regards to the bridge. All agencies worked in cooperation with each other in a unified approach to effectively deal with this potential hazardous incident in a timely manner. Victoria Avenue remains closed until further notice. in this area. This collision remains under investigation.

Admission to the park is free for all. A $2 parking fee per car will be in place. “Money raised goes back into our community as the Rotary

If you haven’t had a chance to visit, now is the time as the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Area celebrates the Second Annual Douglas E. Elliott Memorial Family Bass Fishing Derby. Three Grimsby residents have earned spots on the Canadian National Junior Rowing team. Skyler Goudswaard, Brett Vilk, and Nicholas Nero will all be part of the CanAmMex Team. Mexico will host the 2015 CanAmMex Regatta from July 6-13. This year’s events are being sponsored by the Mexican Rowing Federation. All training and racing will take place at the 1968 Olympic venue, Virgilio Uribe in Mexico City. The Virgilio Uribe course is an artificial venue that was built for the Rowing and Canoeing competitions in the XIX Olympic Games. The event brings together junior competitors from the United States, Canada and Mexico. Vilk will be representing Canada in Rio de Janeiro only when it takes place Aug. 5-9.

Jerry’s Peachbud draws hundred of runners downtown

It is a long-standing tradition taken over in 1989 by one of Grimsby’s favourite sons, the late Jerry Friesen. Each June, usually on a Tuesday afternoon, the streets of Grimsby are flooded with runners of all ages for the Grimsby Peachbud Run, called the Jewel of the Subaru of Hamilton and Niagara Running Series. Tuesday, June 30, was no different as a field of several hundred runners ran through the downtown looking for a personal best. Now called Jerry’s Peachbud, the race was also a fundraiser for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. There was also a ceremony to officially name the outdoor rink located behind town hall on Livingston Avenue. Named in honour of Jerry, it is now offically The Fiese Box.

By Katherine Grant NewsNow It has been almost a year since the family and friends of Steve Marcotte received the terrible news that the Smithville husband, father and friend had been killed in an accident. “He was a great guy,” said long-time family friend Patty McCready. “The kind that really would give you the shirt off his back.” Marcotte, 44, a local businessman, was also a biker and loved throwing his support behind fundraising charity rides. He was on his way home from a ride when he was killed in a collision with a tractor on Upper Centennial Parkway on Aug. 9, 2014. He left behind a family; wife Tammy, her children and grandchildren. “Steve was also into martial arts and taught kids, he really was a one-of-akind guy” said McCready who has know Tammy for about 20 years and Steve for almost as long. Her family are organizing a charity motorcycle ride in Steve’s honour to help his family with ongoing expenses. “There is still so much Tammy is dealing with,” said Patty. Reader figures out West Lincoln plan for downtown access Dear Editor, I got it! I finally understand why we need bike lanes in Smithville. Now that the dust has almost settled in the construction of Canborough & Highway 20 (Reg. Rd 20) and it is obvious that parking has been sacrificed for the sake of aesthetics and bike lanes by the the planners at Region: I get it! Since they have removed most on street parking, (and not provided alternate parking spaces/lots) we have no choice but to take our bikes to town. This is probably logical to some bureaucrat at Niagara

Region who has never lived in small town Ontario. I realize that these are the same people who think that bus service from Niagara Falls to St. Catharines is of value to the residents of West Niagara. How are these bureaucrats justifying the absence of assessable parking in Smithville? Are they not familiar with the Accessibly for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005? Who is going to take the responsibility when they have to tear up all this work and rebuild it to comply with the Accessibility Act? Nellie DeHaan

It is with saddened hearts but wonderful memories that we announce the passing of Jim. Beloved husband for 50 years of Carolyn (nee Johnston) Merritt. Forever remembered by daughters Carrie Autry and husband Mark, and Lesley Martin and husband John. Fun-loving Papa of Lauren, Ashleigh, William and James. Dear brother of Marg Ann Lougheed (late Doug) and brother-in-law of Marg and Chuck Reid. Also lovingly remembered by nieces and nephew, Sue Thompson (Tom), Dave Lougheed (Dana), Lori Clarke, Deborah Reid, and their families. Jim was an active and involved member of the Grimsby community, serving in various roles with the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, and Rotary, among others. Jim loved sports, especially sailing and golf. His home course was Twenty Valley where he regularly enjoyed the challenge of the game with his many good friends. Jim will be remembered by all those who knew him as an all around great guy. Private cremation has taken place. I have been going to Grimsby Chrysler for my vehicle purchase, maintenance and repair for the past 20 years that I have lived in Grimsby. Many years ago, Larry (Lupish) was a fantastic person to have on their service desk. I have continued to keep my business at Grimsby Chrysler, there has not been anyone that was able to replace Larry... until now. It was just another dealership and another car repair shop, and I felt like just another customer coming through the door. Nothing was keeping me there. What a wonderful experience to show up there one day this spring and be greeted by their new service desk receptionist, Marnie! She is a breath of fresh air, always a smile on her face and very pleasant to deal with. Nothing is ever a problem when you are dealing with Marnie. She has the right attitude, which is wonderful to see in a person of a younger generation these days. If there is a problem, she will make it right, or at least make you feel like she cared. She greets everyone with a smile and knows who you are when you

arrive, as if she has been expecting you! When she sees someone with a stack of work with them or a laptop she is quick to offer the use of the guest office while they wait for their vehicle to be repaired, which I did not even know they had as I have always just been shown to the little crowded waiting area in front of the TV. Last time I was there she knew I was busy and was going to have some unexpected brake work to be done on my van. Without me even asking, she was quick to offer me a loaner jeep while my vehicle was having the major repairs completed that day. Rather than have one of the mechanics or someone else bring the vehicle out, which is the norm, she left her post at the desk and personally went to get it for me. However she was disgusted by the bugs that had been left on the windshield by the last user. Without missing a beat, she whisked the jeep away to the back wash area and ensured it was completely clean and ready to go. She really made me feel special that day. This personalized, pleasant service that exceeds expectations is what it takes these days to move ahead as a business. Marnie is a gem! I hope Grimsby Chrysler appreciates what she has brought to their front line.

Well, they no sooner capped off fundraising for a $180,000 laparoscopic gynaecological unit than they set their sights on a new goal of $150,000 for a new ultrasound unit. No problem. Just after that was in motion, good fortune falls into the lap of WLMA and the hospital itself: a chance to get a second ultrasound unit for a bargain price of $50,000 additiona., Again, no problem. Race director Mary Ann Edwards and the Rankin Run are also huge contributors to these endeavours, but countless hours by the Auxiliary in the coffee shop, gift shop and community events raised the remainder. Sense and sensibilities, please Timing can be funny. A couple of weeks ago, the worst-kept secret in Niagara – St. Catharines officials would like to see the region evolve into a uni-city structure – reared its ugly head once again. This space was used to recite several instances from the last 20 years which noted the perils for outlying communities in regions which were amalgamated. Basically, that list includes all municipalities where amalgamation took place because there are no success stories. There are some small pockets of different services and such which improved in some municipalities, but overall the economic benefit hoped for was never achieved. And political higherups can postulate all they want about decisions being made to improve service and streamline process, but make no mistake. It is all about money. What it should come down to is, and this is true of politics at all levels, does the public have an expectation of a certain level of service and are they willing to pay for it. That is what creates political will, and that, my friends, is what makes the world go round: political will. Governments of all shapes and sizes can do whatever they want, but there are consequences for bad decisions. It is rare for political bodies to make tough choices, decisions that go against the grain but

MIKE WILLISCRAFT are the correct decisions. Amalgamation could be one of those decisions, but it is not. There is no precedent or success story road map to follow, so that notion should die, again, as quickly as it has arisen. And to support that thinking, up pops a new study from the Fraser Institute citing the shortcomings of amalgamation. “I think that when a lot of this initial discussion about amalgamation came forward by the previous government, it was all about cost savings, it was all about reducing duplication, and not enough thought was brought into just basic issues of governance and cultural differences between areas, in terms of sensibilities about what people want in certain communities,” says the report’s co-author Lydia Miljan, a political science professor at the University of Windsor. There are many other points in the study, but one word caught my eye: “sensibilities”. That word is so often lost in political process

as people who are completely well-meaning right to their core can appear completely blind to plain old sensibilities. The point of this is NOT to get deeply into any one issue, but the Smithville on-street parking issue comes to mind, as does the ongoing discussion about farmers market issues in Grimsby’s downtown. Now those two matters are in very different spots. Smithville businesses are just plain out of luck when it comes to a need for foresight and progressive thought when it comes to their elected council and township’s administration. Those spots are gone, the region gets what they want and not a peep from the township. Not much sensibility there. The farmers market is a different story. Concerns were raised and a meeting has been planned to get all positive thinking minds in one room and a discussion of possible solutions and ideas will ensue. That is an example of being sensible. Good work, people. Now, it may result that there is no option and the way it is is the way it is – in terms of market layout. However, that does not mean that new and different measures could not be taken nudge traffic along the south side sidewalk which is considerably screened to the eye and pedestrians in the current configuration. Who knows? But they’ll talk it over...and that’s a good thing.
