Laurie-Ann Braun says JR has been in residence in front of her family’s home for more than three years without incident. That changed last Thursday, June 30, when a Town of Grimsby employee, who refused to identify himself, rolled up. “He said, ‘It’s back’,” said Braun. “I said, ‘He never left. Grimsby Early Years centre will close After administrative shuffle, centre’s re-opening uncertain By Mike Williscraft NewsNow With the imminent “retirement” of its founding board, the highly popular Ontario Early Years

Centre on Grand Avenue in Grimsby will close Aug. 26. It is expected that the closure will not be permanent, but there is some

significant reorganization which must take place before the centre can reopen. “The founding board of directors for this particular centre have all indicated a desire to ‘retire’ from this volunteer service and will be disbanding the

board. The result is that FACS Niagara can no longer oversee programming in Grimsby because its agreement is under the current board of directors. My understanding is that the Ministry of Education simply needs to appoint a new overseeing

organization to allow the centre to remain open,” noted Niagara West Glanbrook MPP Tim Hudak in a letter to Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter sent last week. A key glitch in the process could come with the See CENTRE, Page 5

GNOME From Page 1 The drain pipe had been an issue for years when skunks repeatedly made it their home. Initially, Braun had cut holes in a plastic flower pot to allow for water flow and tucked it into the end of the pipe. Several years ago, that evolved into JR with his chair, a bridge, etc. As far as blocking the pipe, Braun said she had no problem removing all if that was what was required, but she has many problems with the lack of notice, ‘intimidation’ over the whole issue from the Town employee and the overall administration of the issue. “They must have a protocol for this type of thing,” said Braun, who added, “The Town guy told me it had to go in case there was a flashflood. News Now • Thursday, July 7, 2016 • Page 3 bour across the street has been here 42 years and said he has never seen groundwater in the ditch.” Town manager Derik Brandt said the employee could have handled things better, but agreed with the message. “People should not be putting items into the Town’s ditch as it can interfere with the flow of water, which is what the ditches are designed for,” wrote Brandt in an email, adding the Town can remove property in such instances, sometimes at the owners’ expense. The initial Thursday confrontation ended with an agreement to remove the gnome et al after the Braun’s home was showcased as part of a garden tour on Sunday. “After all the people coming through, I forgot all about JR. On Monday I was out and

the Town guy came by at noon and started throwing things in his truck,” said Braun. A neighbour intervened - which resulted in both parties threatening to call police and, in the end, it was agreed the items would be returned only if the neighbour took them back to her house. “It’s just so wrong,” said Braun. “This is such a little thing. Kids love it. The neighbours love it. One neighbour even wrote a book about JR.” “If there is an issue, there must be a better way to handle it than the way this went. It really is unbelievable to see how it escalated from a nonissue into neighbours feeling threatened. It’s just not right.” Brandt noted the Town employee felt threatened during the second confrontation. “While doing all this

(removing items) the staff person had an encounter with an angry neighbour who ran over to them. The employee genuinely felt threatened by the situation,” said Brandt, who noted all anyone with a complaint needs to do is call Town Hall or email a description of the incident.

Don’t nickel and dime Early Years Any time something supported by the government - any level of government - closes, it should always be cause for concern, especially if there is any expectation that it open again. Such is the case with Grimsby’s Early Years Centre, which will close Aug. 26. The volunteer board which has carried the freight on that project for about 16 years has had enough and a new structure must be struck. There are ins and outs to it, but long story short, for the small involved, the Ministry of Education should ante up, chip in the funds to offset the impact of staff severances, and keep the doors open with no interruption. Say “no” to gnome profiling Ok, let’s get right into this gnome thing.... The Town of Grimsby is completely within its rights to demand that anything causing a potential hazard - in this case a possible blockage of drainage be removed. Nobody disputes that. Everyone understands that. That noted, I would really like to use three letters here along the line of WT#?, but I don’t want to offend anyone, so I will stick with the aforementioned format. Seriously now people! I don’t know who the Town employee was and I don’t care. He was in the wrong on several fronts and his employer can deal with that. So we’re not going to get into the conduct aspect, although it was interesting to note both sides of the fence from Monday’s altercation - a female neighbour and said employee both claim to have felt intimidated and concerned for their safety. Interesting. Moving on. The fact the employee said threat of a “flash flood” was reason to move good ol JR from his resting place. Really? The gnome is completely innocent in all this and really should launch a lawsuit claiming his gnome rights have been violated. The pseudo wooden door, if you check the photo on the front page, is the true “criminal” here. I think this is noth-

If the door was removed, there is nothing to block the flow of water through a 10-foot long pipe and if there ever was enough water to be of consequence it would flow over the top of that laneway anyways. But again, rules are rules and they are there to protect people and property, just sayin’... So the Brauns, the JR’s enablers, have lived at their Sunnylea Crescent home for more than three decades. They’ve never seen any water even collected in the ditch. A neighbour who has been there 40-plus years, same thing. So the chances of any significant issue of waterflow, in reality, is next to nil. Perhaps a 100-year storm may cause a Sunnylea swell, but other than that...not so much. Since rules are rules and all need to abide by them, unless a special amendment for gnome

zoning, let’s move past the surface on this. First, there was no notice, no courtesy in this situation whatsoever. Again, by the letter of the Town’s bylaws it very well may be there did not have to be any notice, but courtesy should always prevail. Residents are the town’s customers, if you will. Except there really isn’t a choice in shopping (living) in Grimsby unless moving to a whole other town is a option. And that is why courtesy should prevail. Home and business owners have invested millions to help make the town what it is. Without the residents and businessess paying the freight, who the heck would be able to pay for anything at the Town. Nobody, that’s who. There are silly little infractions similar to this all over town. I would guess you could scour the town and find at least one in every neighbourhood. So why shoot JR? (One for the Dallas fans in the crowd). He was supposed to be removed after participation is garden tour which happened on Sunday. Town guy showed up at noon Monday, not 24 hours after the tour ended. If it was that big a deal, a simple phone call reminder would have sufficed and I wouldn’t be blathering on, again.
