By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Unless one has been there themselves, it is near impossible to comprehend the long, twisting road Ida Deslandes has been negotiating the last three years. NewsNow readers will recall the epic cancer battle which began for Ida in the early month of 2014. What started as a nuisance sore on her nose in 1998 - and was thought to be removed and dealt with - had materialized again as a basal
cell carcinoma, the most common form of cancer. It rarely metastasizes or kills but can cause significant destruction and disfigurement by invading surrounding tissues. About three-in-10 people will develop a basal-cell cancer in their lifetime with about 80 per cent of those cancers developing on the head and neck. Ida’s afflication had worked its way into and around her right eye and inside the tear duct. A team of specialists was assembled including SEE IDA, Page 2

those in the fields of head and neck, eye, ear, nose and throat, a plastic surgeon, and a neurologist in case the cancer had spread to her brain. Surgery was scheduled for March 20 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton. From that point on, just about everything to do with what was expected to be about a one-year process has not gone as expected.
While the situation would be lots to handle mentally and physically for many - all on its own - mix in a graft that did not take well, the loss of teeth which was not expected and her husband, Randy, having two brain aneurisms earlier this year. “It really is tough to keep going,” says Ida. “Every time things seem to be going in the right direction, something has gone terribly wrong.”

With all that and much more in the past, Ida and Randy are laser-focused on a huge upcoming milestone - a very important “debulking which will provide most of the foundation needed for her planned prosthetics. “It has been three long years dealing with a painfully obvious affliction,” says Randy. “With most people when they are battling cancer it is internal. They can fight the fight quietly, on their own terms. With Ida, hers is on the outside, superficial. She can’t hide it no matter how much she wants to.” Because of her circumstance, some people scurry away when they see her at the grocery store or about town. While much of that had subsided when the couple lived in Beamsville, the process started over again when they moved up to Smithville last year because the home they rented was sold. “The incredible depression I am in is very
tough to deal with. It weighs tremendously,” says Ida. “In Beamsville people knew I was the one with the terrible face but had a good heart. We’ve got great neighbours now, but starting over with the stares and such in the community is hard.” Physically, Randy says she is doing very very well and things were on the improve until his aneurism issues in March. “I cannot take care of myself. There was no way I could take care of Randy,” notes Ida. “We plug along and do the best we can.” Financially, the couple continue to struggle as well. Randy has been on disability for serious back issues for years. The couple is very appreciative of the support of local food banks. New NRP ticketing procedure Since the last week of June, some Niagara Regional police officers traded in their hand-written traffic tickets for an advanced “eTicketing” system. The new pilot system offers many benefits, including reducing the margin of human error as well as the amount of administrative burden involved in the process for both Niagara Regional Police staff and court staff. This means a savings of time and money for Niagara’s taxpayers. Currently, all tickets issued at the roadside for traffic violations are completed by police officers by hand. Not only is this time consuming and potentially unsafe for the officer to be standing on the side of the road, it also allows for many opportunities for
errors that can result in tickets being rejected or dismissed by the Court. In the last 10 years, about 4,300 traffic tickets laid by the Niagara Regional Police have either been rejected or dismissed by the Provincial Offences Court due to late filing or errors on a ticket. The eTicketing system uses technology now available in police cruisers to scan a driver’s licence for the vital details that are required to lay a charge. The system also allows a police officer to automatically select the correct charge and wording, thereby removing the opportunity for transcription errors. Newly installed printers in the cruisers will generate the Offence Notice in realtime.

Grimsby Canada Day a quadruple threat! Grimsby Museum, Grimsby Public Art Gallery and library, Grimsby Historical Society and Nelles Manor Museum all teamed up to host Canada Day celebrations at four locations on Saturday. Coronation Park, Lions Pool, Grimsby Museum and Nelles Manor all hosted different activities. The Manor, at 126 Main Street W., will continue with its summer draw for visitors to be complete the week of July 18. Entrants will be eligible to win a surprise gift valued at more than $200. Tours are available Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am-4:30 pm and Sunday’s 1-4:30 pm. Tours are $14 for adults, $8 for students 14 and older, $3 for children, under 3 are free.

Get informed at July 17 council meeting Somewhat related to the adjacent piece...here is a heads up for what council is calling a biodigester update, which is supposed to come at the July 17 meeting of Grimsby council. The last update council got was in January. Readers may remember that was when Grimsby Power chairman Joe Panetta told council the biodigester would be up and running by mid-February - then corrected himself to leave more of a time buffer and adjusted his prediction to the end of February. Needless to say, we are in July and nothing is happening. Shockingly, the general public – except a few stalwarts who have been watching the proceedings – has cared little until recently. While there have been a groundswell of late, it was interesting to see about 35 heritage folk turn out two weeks ago for a hot button issue at council. The most ever seen for a biodigester matter - admittedly only a handful of issues have seen the light of day - has been about a dozen people. Get informed, Be there July 17. M.W.
Vote ad has a long-term purpose Reaction has been split. Reaction to what, you ask? If you are asking, either you didn’t notice or you are one of the majority who is not paying attention. And noting you are not paying attention is not a slight. It is merely a statement of fact. The vast majority of eligible voters sit on their hands for municipal elections. Typically, somewhere around 30-40 per cent voter turn out decides most municipal council results. In 2018, things could be the exact same in Niagara West. That will be up to the voters. But when I noted about reactions being mixed off the top, it was in relation to the ad I started running noting the date of the next municipal election, which will be in October 2018. Yes, it is a long ways away and that is just plain too bad, in my humble opinion, for the residents of Grimsby and West Lincoln who desperately need some new blood - a whole lotta new blood. Having covered just about every kind of council one can imagine over three decades - from the rubber boot set at Ashfield Twp. council back in my Goderich days to the fanciest three-piece-suit wearing councillors with Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton and everything in between - I have never seen one, let alone two councils so disconnected from financial reality. Yep, there budget will balance. It has to. Municipalities are not allowed to run deficit budgets. However, it is how they get there that people have to pay attention to. And before I go a step further, the goal of all this is to education people what is happening right under their collective noses with THEIR money. It is not someone
MIKE WILLISCRAFT else’s money. It is the residents’ hard-earned dollars literally going up in smoke (or emissions as the case of the good ol’ CoGen). I am not going to tell anyone who to vote for or who not to vote for. I don’t think that is ever my job. Some newspapers do make a habit of endorsing candidates and/ or political parties. I never have. It seems more important to present facts, all the facts, no matter how silly or distasteful that may seem at times and readers/voters can make an informed decision. If you think all current members of council are doing a terrific job -– once you know what key decisions have been made, what the short- and long-term financial impacts of those decisions will be, and where overspending and waste has occurred –– and you want to vote for them again, more power to you. This is a democracy and that is the way it goes. Part of the reason I started running that “vote” ad goes back to something Grimsby Ald, Steve Berry has said many times of the years. When pressed, he will say something to the effect of “the silent majority in town know what is really going on”, or somesuch. The truth is the silent are not the majority. The major-
ity have such disinterest that about two-thirds of eligible voters in Grimsby don’t vote at all. It is a situation not unique to Grimsby. Getting people to notice and pay attention is very difficult. The old adage with hydro is, if a customer flips the switch and light goes on, you’re not going to hear much from them. One might hear some grousing about Kathleen Wynne and hydro costs, but more people perceive there is little to be done due to the regulation of hydro rates. One area where the wheels come off this thinking is another oldie but a goodie...the biodigester. Aside from the major and ongoing issues with getting this hog up and running, the clear and present danger it represents is the lack of public oversight on the project due to provincially established guidelines which allow Grimsby Energy, Grimsby Power, HoldCo2, Niagara Power and that whole show to hide behind privacy guidelines while controlling and spending money which is, in reality, the municipality’s. It is a glaring structural error, one the provincial government needs to rectify asap. It makes no sense that municipalities have restrictions to limit the risk and exposure they undertake with taxpayers’ money, yet hydro officials can, have and will do pretty much anything they please with funds which should be firmly controlled by the Town of Grimsby. Case in point, the $9 million in proceeds from the sale of NRBN, hydro’s fibre optic company. A slice of that sure could pay for a few of these recent hires...but I digress. Pay attention. Get informed. One way or the other, make sure your vote counts.

Pay attention, ask questions, vote accordingly: reader Dear Editor, Reading the June 22 edition of NewsNow I note that it includes a reminder that the next municipal election falls on Oct. 22, 2018. Unfortunately the response to those reading this reminder will be “Ho-Hum” or “So What”. As the advertisement (Page 10) exhorts: “Be Vocal; be aware; be educated on the issues”, but how many of us will make the effort? Sadly. Grimsby municipal elections are very poorly participated in. Candidates are voted into office with miserably low vote counts. Voted into positions where they – as mayor and aldermen – are responsible for how YOUR MONEY (municipal taxes) is spent. Council becomes responsible for what decisions affect the town’s future growth and prosperity, and how well the community is served. As individuals, we try to ensure that our personal income is used wisely, and take corrective action for any adverse decisions, but we don’t seem concerned enough to care about how part of our income (in the form of municipal taxes) is spent, and how
Letter actions and decisions by mayor and council influence our collective future and prosperity. Unfortunately, the present mayor and council don’t appear to be serving the town’s best interests. Not only are they endangering Grimsby’s future development and prosperity – by some of their past and present actions – but appear to be blatantly arrogant when challenged on these by members of the community! Serving in public office demands commitment and effort to serve the community. It is easy for others to play the role of “armchair quarterback” but as the editor pointed out in his editorial, making mistakes is part of life, but so is learning from them. Those at our town hall appear to be ignoring the second part! The current mayor and council made a commitment upon being elected to serve the town’s best interests in all areas of their responsibility. Regrettably their collective performance to date does not ap-

For example: • How are they planning to resolve the biodigester cost overruns and delayed commissioning? • What are they planning to do about the CoGen problems at town hall other than throw more money at them?
• What is their response to hiring consultants instead of buckling to and working out problems themselves with the help of the community? • How do they see the recommendation (by consultants) that we set up a money-losing
