Respected grape grower dies suddenly Niagara has lost a ‘giant’ of a man. When Debbie Zimmerman suggested a change from the traditional purple Grape King jacket to a more sedate blue, Howard Staff gently protested. “He loved that purple jacket,” said Zimmerman, CEO Ontario Grape Growers. That memory is just one of many she will carry
with her of her friend and mentor Howard Staff. Staff, a well-know and respected grape grower, died suddenly last Friday at the age of 71. Staff was the sixth generation to farm his family homestead, and was an industry leader in Lincoln. Staff was one of the longest serving members of the Grape Growers of Ontario, as a member of the Growers’ Committee
for 38 years, and a Board Director for 10 years. In 1996, Staff was nominated as Grape King by his peers and earned his purple jacket. “We are shocked and devastated,” said Zimmerman. “In addition to being a great family man, he was also a great community man.” “He always had a story to tell, and people listened to him.”
“He had a hearty laugh and there was power in his voice. He was a giant of a man but a gentle man as well.” In business, said Zimmerman, Staff understood there was a process to be followed and he also treated others with respect. The Niagara North Federation of Agriculture awarded Staff a lifetime

into the area,” said Bill George, chair of the Ontario Grape Growers. “Since then he still continued to farm, be a leader, and develop his business. We will miss him.” The family is requesting donations should be directed to the Niagara Community Foundation “Howard V. Staff Memorial Fund”.

The Tavern, The hotel, Teddy’s: part of Main Street for 50 years The Jordan House. With Jennie working the kitchen, Teddy Sr. was the idea man who worked the bar and PR. It was a team effort. “It was Dad who wanted to start selling chicken wings,” recalled Sandy. “Mom said, ‘What do you want to sell those for? They’re garbage’!” He said they were the hottest thing in Buffalo.” Co-owner Teddy Jaskula Jr, says they have a lot for which to be thankful. “It all goes back to our customers. We could not be here without them and we appreciate that. All our staff, too, over the years, they’ve been great,” said Teddy. This Saturday, July 5, marks the official 50th anniversary.
For five decades, the Jaskula family has been part of the streetscape in downtown Grimsby. That presence has taken many forms over that span – some more colourful than others – but the same caring, intensely supportive of its community code of conduct has been there from the start. “It’s all part of being part of a small, close community,” says co-owner Sandy Jaskula of Teddy’s Fun, Food & Spirits high level of community support. “That was instilled by our parents. I had to have it! “How much?” The 20-year-old kid in the corner looked annoyed that I would dare speak while he played Grand Theft Auto on what looked like the worlds’ first computer. He picked up a cell phone, hit a button and got the boss or his dad or both. “That framed photo of the band with them parents,” he said. “What? Yeah, those guys.” He looked at me and said: “A hundred and twenty-five bucks.” Oh man, an autographed photo of The Mamas & The Papas! These people didn’t have a clue of what this piece of rock history was worth! Beautiful.

When I got it home, I cleaned the frame, windexed the glass and hung it smack dab in the middle of my bedroom wall. Perfect! The next morning, coffee mug in hand, I was sitting on the edge of the bed looking into the almost angelic eyes of a bearded Denny Doherty, the calm and cool member of the band. Right beside him, the normally grungy Mama Cass is looking way, way better than I ever remembered. Her hair, normally lank and scraggly was actually short and perky and ... and okay, that’s not Mama Cass. A closer look at the signature confirmed that the large woman in the photo is actually Spanky McFarlane who joined The Mamas & The Papas after Mama croaked. I don’t know how I missed that but I certainly should have

The Henry Cort was broken up for scrap during WWII. By Skip Gillham For NewsNow Change was a significant part of the career of the whaleback steamer Henry Cort. The ship was built at West Superior, Wisconsin, in 1892 and entered service as Pillsbury. Originally a package freighter, it worked on behalf of the Soo Line Railroad before joining the Bessemer Steamship Co. in 1896 as Henry Cort. It became part of the Pittsburgh Steam-
Shipwreck ship division of United States Steel when the company was formed in 1901 and now carried iron ore and coal. While icebreaking on western Lake Erie on Dec. 17, 1917, the vessel sank after a head-on collision with the Midvale. Following repairs, it resumed service only to become stranded while icebreaking on Lake
Erie in 1927. The vessel was rebuilt as a crane ship in 1927 and was wrecked when it struck the north pier at Muskegon, MI on Dec. 1, 1934. It was all about the chicks at PoultryFest From the popular breakfast to the buskers and vendors, and, of course, the stars of the show, fowl aplenty, PoultryFest was a huge hit again this year. “We haven’t missed a year,” said Daniel Van Mill who brings his family to Smithville from Mount Hope each year. Despite forecasts for thunder showers, Lincoln’s Canada Day festivities went off without a hitch. The annual event drew big crowds to Charles Daley Park to take in music, snack and bask in the sun. “We always seem to be lucky and the bad weather seems to go right around,” said Judy Pease, who coordinates that day for the Town’s Recreation Services Department.

Gentleman farmer will be missed Gentleman farmer: it’s an old term and one which pops to mind when one thinks of Howard Staff. A very classy and respected individual, Howard died suddenly last Friday, June 27, after suffering a heart attack at his family’s Jordan farm. He was very well known as a long-time grape grower. In typical fashion, he passed away after putting in a full day of farm work. A good indication of the respect with which he was held was the 90-minute wait in the sun to get into Tallman Funeral Home for his visitation. Condolences to the family. M.W.

All we needed was enough support to get going, get up on our feet and start to move. Well, here we are in the midst of Year III and things are starting to move. Case in point, some of you will have included in your paper the inaugural edition of ClubWEST Magazine, West Niagara’s first lifestyle publication just for us, residents of Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln and Winona. The world of magazines is very different from that of newspapers and ClubWEST won’t be like anything readers will have seen here. I just want to stress, if you miss a copy and want to check it out, we will have extra copies in our Grimsby office at 49 Main Street W., across from Giant Tiger. For the first edition, we actually printed more than 15,000 copies so we would have some extras to give away. We will be out and about at today’s (Thursday’s) farmers market in front of our office to give some away. We will also be doing some regular drops at medical offices, salons and other places you might expect. If you want some dropped at your office

I would much rather get them to someone’s door rather than put out 1,000 sitting around town. The book looks very sharp, to me anyways, but I always want to know what our readers think, so please let us know. In what is approaching 30 years in publishing, I have been involved in many start ups, all shapes and sizes. This was just plain fun. Challenging, as always, but fun. And for myself and my team, if it wasn’t fun, we would not be here.
The first ClubWEST set sail for the printer at 3 a.m. That’s right, no typo...3 a.m. When you are a small, independent operation you just do what you have to do... and we did. We’re already gearing up for our next deadline in August, so if you have a cool feature idea let me know and I’ll see what I can muster. For advertisers, to be part of the August book you can call me or your regular sales representative. Between running ads in NewsNow and circulating a promo sheet, we tried to let all know what was up, but it was physically impossible to get to everyone prior to the first deadline. Just like when we launched our first publication in Stoney Creek a couple of weeks ago, I suspect (hope) there will be a lot of interest and follow up. Good, bad, or indifferent, feedback is always appreciated. So let us know what you think. We will also be setting up residents with subscriptions to ClubWest as well. With 15,000 copies going into circulation, not everyone will get it. If you don’t happen to get it, please call and we will let you know where you can find one.
