As a result of a multilevel partnership and the generosity of a local businessman, Grimsby will have two new 90-amp charge stations ready to go next Thursday. “The installation is planned for Thursday, Aug 7. I’m not sure if they will be activated that day but I believe that is the plan,” said Tony Quirk, Downtown Improvement Area Board chair. The DIA, along with the Town of Grimsby, Grimsby Power and businessman Jaff Stevenson have all partnered to make this innovation come to life. “The electric vehicle station is a fantastic addition to our downtown as we highlight how ‘friendly by nature’ we are,” said Quirk. “We will be featured as the only public charging station between

The huge group, part of Grand Tour Desjardins 2014 will be making a lunch stop at Peach King Centre as part of an eight-day adventure. “The Town of Grimsby is happy to be a part of the Grand Tour Desjardins 2014, and we look forward to welcoming the cyclists during their lunch stop in Grimsby,” said Sarah Sweeney, Town of Grimsby’s recreation coordinator. Fort Erie Racetrack - Come watch the horses swim?! I was just 15 years old, living in a dot on the map called Dain City when I had a vague notion that there was a beautiful and exciting racetrack. I was 20 minutes away from where horses raced on summer afternoons and people went to bet on them. Gambling being one of the few vices my father did not practice, I never got to the Fort Erie Racetrack as a kid. I made up for it after my first year at university when I found out the hard way that betting on the horses was not the same as a summer job in that the money was going the wrong way. But in the late summer of ‘61 even people who cared little or knew nothing about Fort Erie - then and now one of the most stunning settings for horseracing in North America - had heard of Puss n Boots. He was the horse who became instantly famous for taking a

Puss n Boots, trained by the great horseman Frank Merrill, was brought to Fort Erie from Gulfstream Park in Florida where he had earned the reputation of a promising sprinter but a bit of a nutter. During one outing a piece of paper flying around the Florida track had sent him into a tailspin and he almost jumped the rail to get away from it. It was a hot September afternoon at Fort Erie, the beautiful racetrack set around shimmering infield lakes with well-trimmed shrubs and flowers in full bloom.

From Page 4 Puss n Boots was actually leading by five lengths at the top of the stretch on the mile-andone-sixteenth turf course when the jockey slapped his ass ... right-handed. Apparently the horse was fine with a whack on his left cheek but never the right one. The jockey either hadn’t been told or forgot about this particular peculiarity. Freaked and looking to flee the track, Puss n Boots spotted a narrow opening in the hedge that circled the turf course, used mainly by the groundskeepers to enter the infield where they watered the plants and trimmed the shrubs. At full speed and carry-
ing a very startled Ronnie Behrens on his back, Puss n Boots shot the gap. The quick left turn sent the jockey airborne over the horse’s head as his mount made a beeline for the nearest infield lake. Sprawled on the grass, the jockey looked like he was starring in a cartoon that carried the caption: “Riding - the art of keeping the horse between you and the ground.” Did I mention it was also a very hot day? Nearing the water the horse hit the brakes as a silent and disbelieving crowd of over 14,000 people in the grandstand watched Puss n Boots slide slowly and inelegantly into the lake, ass-first. Trust me, when a bet-
tor puts a wad of money on a rising star like Puss n Boots, expecting him to win the race, the last thing he wants to hear from the horse is the sound of a really big splash. Immediately, Ronnie Behrens jumped into the lake to save his horse until ... until he remembered he could not swim. Immediately trainer Frank Merrill went thrashing into the lake to save his jockey until ... until he remembered he, too, could not swim. With one horse and two men now flailing away in deep water, the entire starting gate crew first kicked off their shoes, stripped down to their skivvies and then plunged into the lake
like a team of very pale lifeguards. Although the gate guys hauled the jockey and trainer out of the drink, that horse just wanted to have fun. Leisurely he swam in circles in the middle of the lake like it was his private backyard pool. Horseracing is supposed to be a serious business, not a day at the beach. A big horse, a small skiff, three guys mostly naked and nobody, nobody said: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat?!?” It took a man in a row

boat and the starting crew almost an hour to get a hold of Puss n Boots and lead him to land at which time he got a standing ovation. Thousands of people showed up to watch a horse race and a swim meet broke out! This amazing moment in horseracing history is commemorated annually with Fort Erie’s $30,000 Puss n Boots Circle The Course coming up on Sunday, Aug. 31 after which the winners - jockey, trainer and owners but no, not the horse
- jump into that same infield lake. Although the horse is long gone, the track lives on and is experiencing a bit of a renaissance. Running eight races every Tuesday and Sunday people are starting to pack the place again. Twilight Tuesdays has a post time of 4:15 pm. There’s no better way to remember summer than a long and languid afternoon at the track. Try it. I guarantee you’ll like it. Just don’t bet what I’m betting, okay?

Ship meets its end at bottom of sea By Skip Gillham For NewsNow After seven years under the flag of Denmark, the small saltwater ship Leinster Bay headed for the Far East in 1973 and a new career in and around the Philippine Islands. It had been built at Rendsburg, Germany, in 1966 and made a brief appearance on the Great
Shipwreck Lakes in 1967. The 90.1 by 13.5 metre long freighter could carry up to 3,170 tons of cargo and was diesel powered. While on the Pacific, the ship sailed under four different names and included time with the well known Williams Lines Inc., from
1975 until 1990. Fire broke out in the engineroom on Feb. 25, 1990, while the ship was on a voyage between the Philippine ports of Nasipit and Cebu. The vessel, now known as Wilcon III, was heavily damaged and sank the next day in the Mindanao Sea. Photo: Harry Stott - 1967

Pack a bag for a student When the Grimsby Benevolent Fund speaks, typically that would be either Stacy Elia or Marion Thorp, people listen. The same is true for Carole Fuhrer of West Niagara Community Care and Gary Warden of West Lincoln Community Care, for that matter. Today, though, Stacy has the stage as the GBF kicks off its annual Back Pack Program. This week, Stacy noted 150 children were already registered for support through the program which includes everything from binders to paper to pencils to running shoes for kids going back to school this fall. This is before the kids affiliated with area social supports groups such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, FORT or West Niagara Second Stage Housing are included. Many are surprised there is such a need but it is there and it is real. Call GBF to lend support M.W.
Niagara: a cycling frontier? Just need to give a quick mention to any businesses who have been contacted for our Best In The West salute to winners, please get back to us early Friday morning. We are working on this feature Friday and Saturday (with Monday being a holiday and we will be closed). I know we will have some spillover for those who have been away and such to run in Aug. 14 edition, some prefer that date, but anyone who would like a presence in the section Aug. 7 needs to follow up asap...thanks. ****** In many ways, the arrogance of North American society – yes, I am lumping us Canucks in with our counterparts below the border – is its own worst enemy. Take a city in Europe like Amsterdam where it would not be uncommon to see a 20-something female cycling to work in her designer skirt, complete with heels...and, yes, still managing to use her cell phone along the way (for better or worse). The point there is, use of bicycles is extremely common. Cyclists get the right of way and are respected on the road. Montreal, which is as close to a European city as this continent has, has gone to great lengths to usher in the same sort of cycle-first mentality. Aside from setting up bike lanes in its downtown core (as Toronto has “sort of” done), Montreal has taken out entire lanes of
MIKE WILLISCRAFT traffic on some streets, or eliminated parking on others and put in cement medians to create cycling thoroughfares. Ottawa has some of this infrastructure. When I lived in Nepean I could get on a bike trail and go all the way up to the MacKenzie King Estate in the Gatineau Hills without going on a roadway at all....thanks, Greenbelt! So what does all this have to do with little ol’ us here in Niagara West? Well, having been a part Grimsby Active Transportation’s committee pretty much since its inception, I’ve worked on a few things with its chair, Pat Maloney, over the last couple of years. The Walking Route contest we did got a lot of interest, a good start to promoting some “get off the couch” ideas. We will be publishing some of the routes in the near future. Next Friday, through morning and into mid-day, 1,700 cyclists taking part in Le Grand Tour will be peddling into town. They will be stopping off at Peach King Centre. This
is not a race, but a recreational tour which spans eight days. The group is in Niagara for three days. A year in the planning, this event is projected to impact Niagara’s local economies to the tune of $500,000. Aside from the recreational value and ecofriendly nature of cycling, targeting tourists in this vein is extremely desirable due to their spending habits. Motorists are headed somewhere, so they may stop in your area, they may not, but most likely they are passing through. Cycling tourists tend to be centred in one area, so to get on the worldwide map as a destination of choice means considerable longterm benefits. “Niagara is ‘Cycling Heaven’. Unfortunately, most of the tourism people in Niagara do not as yet believe it. This type of tourism is ideally suited to the smaller communities in Niagara. We have the open roads, a diversity of activities and the beautiful rural landscapes that can make us a premier destinations for cycle tourists,” Pat notes. Continued focus from all levels of government is key. Paving road shoulders for bike paths is of paramount importance to providing continuous infrastructure. Yes, there is a cost but with exponential and long-term benefits. I know there are strong proponents of regional transportation (buses) but I would like to see cycling connections prioritized over even that.
