By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Tenants of the Escarpment Inn and Residences in Grimsby’s west end have won their appeal to the Landlord and Tenant Board making them eligible for damages. Lisa Ridsdill of Niagara North Community Legal Assistance, who acted on behalf of the 28 tenants, said the judgment makes those at the 575 Main Street West location eligible for mental distress, moving expenses and other forms of compensation. “We are very happy because this case carries a lot
of weight in other situations, not just in Grimsby,” said Ridsdill. “We have a lot of instances in Niagara Falls where hotels take people in in the off-season and they kick them out with no notice when tourist season comes along. This was an important case.” Ridsdill said her understanding is the property owners will serve tenants with a 120-day notice to vacate so they can execute a demolition permit at the site. Wendy Watt, tireless Grimsby champion, dies at 78 By Katherine Grant NewsNow Grimsby has lost one of its most fierce champions. Although diminutive in size, there was nothing small about the spirit of Wendy Watt. Watt, who served as a
Grimsby alderman for 12 years, died at McNally House on Sunday. She was 78. “Wendy was one of the most fierce, passionate community minded-person I have ever met in all of her four-foot-plus frame,” said former regional councillor
Debbie Zimmerman. “I worked with Wendy on countless committees; her boundless determination for Grimsby and its future was evident in her work on regional economic development work , chamber of commerce and all things his-
torical. Wendy didn’t drive so I often picked her up to go meetings when she was an alderman and we spent lots of time going over the evenings events. “Her love of her family and community is what made her so special, and she left

From Page 1 Wendy,” said Nick Andreychuk who served as mayor during Watt’s time on council. “I think everyone who knew her would agree she worked hard to get things done to make this town a better place and she wasn’t one to mince words when it came time to make her point. But the happiness of other people was important to her so she worked hard to bring about positive changes.” Watt was very proud of Grimsby’s rich heritage and was knowledgable about its history. “I loved Wendy for her wisdom, common sense and kindness to everyone,” said her friend Dorothy Turcotte. “She was a good friend, and our many conversations over
the years have greatly enriched my life. Wendy did a great deal of good for Grimsby in many capacities. We will miss her very much.” In addition to her time on council, she was proud to serve on numerous boards and committees. Some of her achievements include being a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal; being Grimsby Citizen of the Year; earning a medal for volunteering on Canada’s 125th birthday, and; being a recipient of the Rotary Club’s Paul Harris fellowship award, to name just a few. Watt is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jack, and her son and daughterin-law, Shawn and Loraina, and grandchildren Taylor and Connor; she was predeceased by her son,

As part of the ongoing effort to identify persons responsible for the on-line sexual exploitation of children, the Niagara Regional Police Services Internet Child Exploitation (I.C.E) Unit, Technological Crimes Unit, and 8 District Uniform Patrol officers, executed a search warrant on a west-end residence, Thursday, June 25. As a result of the ongoing investigation, a 41-year-old Beamsville man has been arrested and charged with possession of child pornography, access child pornography, and making child pornography available. Dunda sings the Blues GMHA grad ecstatic as next step in hockey journey unfolds
By Mike Williscraft NewsNow In what has been a rollercoaster year for the Dunda family of Grimsby, 17-year-old Liam put them at the pinnacle of emotion Saturday. Liam was drafted in the sixth round by the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League’s entry draft. He knew there was a chance he would get selected and he had been in contact with the Blues throughout the last year. So, was he glued to his TV set anticipating hearing his name? “My dad and I were
outside loading up our second run to the dump. My phone started buzzing like crazy and then my agent called,” recalled Liam of the moment he heard he had been drafted. “The best was my sister. She came running out of the house in pyjamas, arms waving in the air, screaming.” For his older brother Riley, his ‘little’ brother’s good fortune meant a slap of reality. “It’s official, I guess. He is better than me,” said Riley at the family’s kitchen table for

He moved to St. Catharines Falcons AAA for three years of minor atom and another year of pee wee. From there, it was back to back to Grimsby to put some fun back in the game. “It was great to get to spend some time with my buddies again and we had a great year almost going undefeated in the regular season,” said Liam, who graduated

He said the Blues had followed him closely for a year and checked in to see how he thought his game was, how his training was going and where he thought his game needed to improve. The draft was a focal point of the weekend and Liam and Riley did park themselves in front of the TV to watch the
first two rounds on Friday night. Liam wanted to see where his best friend, Mitch Marner went. That mystery was solved early on when the Toronto Maple Leafs made Marner the fourth selection overall. “We became great friends when we played minor midget for the Don Mills Flyers,” noted Liam. The road to positioning himself to be drafted has not been easy on the ice or off. In the last year, Liam was traded from the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers to Owen Sound, lived with two billet families, attended three high schools and managed to graduate from
GSS as an Ontario Scholar. “We are really proud of him. He has come through a lot,” said his mom, Linda. And this is nothing to say of the family pulling together last year when Riley suffered a life-threatening stroke in May. Later this week, Liam takes the next step of his dream to make the NHL as he attends the Blues developmental camp July 5-10. He is also hoping to attend a prospect camp in Traverse City, Mich. in September. He expects to be back with the Attack for next season and improving his power game so he can get to the next level.

Ciderfest rocks the farm
Dry County took to the stage Friday night at Ciderfest at Puddicombe Farms.
A soggy Saturday didn’t dampen the country spirit of the crowds that filled the grounds at Ciderfest at Puddicombe Farms and Estate Winery. The fourth annucal event suffered a bit of a setback with torrential rain all day but the entertainment and the cider and wine tastingsmore than mad up for it. Deserved compensation A win is a win, but sometimes they can feel less than satisfying. Such is the case for the 28 people who were residents of the Escarpment Inn in Grimsby as they won their appeal to the Landlord and Tenant Board, but months of anguish and uncertainty has already taken place. Only about a dozen still remain since the news of a 48-hour notice for tenants to vacate the premises was issued by the landlord. Virtually every social service in Niagara Region attended a special meeting set up by Grimsby Fire Department officials to arrange potential aid for the tenants. Ongoing and numerous issues related to fire code regulations were a major concern at the hotel. In short, it was a hot mess. Now, it is official. If you read the front-page story, the residents have been designated as protected by the Residential Tenancies Act. They will get compensation, and they deserve it. M.W.
It was a rollercoaster of a week It was much better to visit the Dunda home on Sunday morning than it was on my previous stop-in last May. Last May it was a difficult conversation with Richard Dunda days after his son Riley had suffered a stroke. There was a lot of uncertainty at the time. It was pretty dark. Fast forward to this past weekend, could it have been more of a polar opposite? No chance. Smiles, joking, teasing... now that was more like it. And why not? A 17-yearold kid (sorry Liam) getting drafted by the Big Show? Oh ya, there should be a party atmosphere. Very exciting. Very happy for the Dunda’s: good folks and deserving of something this special. Congratulations Liam and whole posse! ****** At the other end of the scale, and this is how it is in the news game, I was right in the middle of planning my copy for a short deadline week when I was informed of the passing of Wendy Watt. For those who just moved to town, you won’t likely even know who this lady was, let alone what she was all about, and that is too bad. But you should know, she was right at the top of the list of people I have come to know in my 20 years in town who were intensely dedicated to the Town of Grimsby. I got to know Wendy as a town alderman back in the 90s. She was a very active member of the Grimsby
MIKE WILLISCRAFT Historical Society and, really, anything to do with heritage or history. But she was a lady who really worked hard to develop longer term economic goals and long before they became trendy. I can recall sitting in a meeting in what still looked like a barn out in Winona across the road from E.D. Smith plant on Hwy. 8. These were some of the formative discussions for the West Niagara Tourism Association (NWTA). Llewellyn Smith, Joan Hastings Dove, Doug Jarvis and the like were on hand. Wendy was tenacious with all those kinds of things. There was nothing like that association – a group that could bring partners together and get them to work as a singular unit to market and promote not just their individual businesses and events but the West Niagara as a whole. It was like herding cats. There was a ton of frustration and years of effort resulted in little movement, but that did not stop Wendy. Grimsby Economic Development Advisory Committee came into being and she was a stalwart
there, with roughly parallel timing to the NWTA work. Much of the tourism marketing work dovetailed with interests of Grimsby’s Chamber of Commerce for many years when they were located out at Gateway. It was rare to be at a meeting where Wendy was not in attendance. For a lady diminutive in physical stature, this lady did a great deal of heavy lifting. The effects of which will be felt for years, and few will even realize who it was that positioned much of it. A classy lady, who didn’t say much but spoke with impact. She embodied the good things a politician could be. She will be missed. Condolences to her husband Jack and the rest of the family. ****** Ya know, you really have to feel for people like the organizers of Poultryfest and Ciderfest who stick their necks out, try to run a major event, and Mother Nature simply made alternative plans to allowing sun and warmth. Saturday was the first time I used an umbrella to cover an event. I’ve shot whole football and soccer games in the rain, no umbrella....must be getting old. I felt horrible for those folks. Troopers every one, they soldiered on and did the best with the cards they were dealt. For that they deserve immense credit. Let us hope next year is glorious by comparison with nary a cloud and thousands turn out as a result.
