Getting directly to decision-makers may have staved off a closure of Grimsby’s Early Years Centre. As of last week, centre officials and affected parents were looking ahead to the proposed Aug. 26 closure date with considerable trepidation as no feedback had come from the Ministry of Education as to what may transpire with the facility. The facility had been slated to close due to the winding up of the volunteer board which has managed the service since its inception. Last year the Grimsby location amassed 6,600 child visits. Armed with information from parents and current board members, Hudak connected with Family and Children Services Niagara officials, which oversees the Grimsby site for the MoE, and, ultimately, MoE officials. “The parents who contacted me and shared their concerns with my office as well as with FACS really got the ball rolling,” said Hudak, who visited the centre on July 15 to hear directly from parents and staff on why the centre was slated to close in August. Carol Richmond: Community loses dedicated volunteer Gordie Howe may have been Mr. Hockey on a global scale, but Carol Richmond was certainly Mrs. Hockey in Grimsby. Carol, who, along with her husband Bob (aka Coach Bob), ran Grimsby Minor Hockey Association’s Hockey School for 35-plus years died Saturday.

Carol was a teacher for 38 years and more recently had been extremely active with the West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary., “Like many, our family was shocked to hear this news. Somewhere, Carol’s work and bright smile contin-

ues on. I can see her handing out hockey jerseys to an excited, or nervous, young child, calming an anxious parent and organizing what appeared to be utter chaos with 200-plus hockey families. Carol, you will be sadly missed,” said former GMHA

He then talked with MoE staff to get provincial approval for a new board. “Everyone liked the idea,” said Hudak, noting it resolves the issue facing FACS Niagara and the Ministry of Education after the resignation of the current board. “This was just a case of several groups involved and not one of them taking the lead or working actively on a solution,” said Hudak. “The pressure from the parents and my conversations with all parties just facilitated a solution.” He noted that the final approval for a new board and continuing operation without a stoppage in service has yet to be formally approved, but all parties agreed to the idea in principle. Hudak said he appreciates

the response from FACS and the Ministry, noting the parents stepping up to organize and offer their time to keep the centre open has been instrumental in achieving a solution. “There are sure to be bumps as a new board is put in place, but I’m certain FACS and Ministry staff will be available to help smooth the road,” said Hudak, adding he will continue to press both organizations for quick responses on this issue. The issue arose when the volunteer board, which managed the facility from the outset began to buckle under workload pressure brought on when the MoE took over responsibility for the EYC programs in 2014. The board gave its notice that it could not continue, but were not told a facility closure would result. When informed of the Aug. 26 closure date and that a moving company had been hired to clear things out, parents and staff quickly banded together to work with Hudak and find a solution.

BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT ACROSS NIAGARA WEST Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln, ON – The Fire Chiefs of Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln, remind all residents of Niagara West municipalities that the Fire Chiefs have issued a BAN ON OPEN-AIR FIRES that applies everywhere in Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln; NO EXCEPTIONS. These bans include all backyard recreational fires, other open flame devices, and suspend all burning permits. These BANS will remain in place until further notice by the Fire Chiefs of each respective community, pending substantial changes in local conditions that will reduce the risk of spread of fire. The team from small town Canada has just returned from the World Jump Rope Championships and knocked it out of the park in the premier competition on the planet. Held in Braga, Portugal these championships had the Leapers up against the very best in the world. A team of 10 athletes along with dedicated coaches Becca Simpson and Colleen Chapman represented Canada and our Region with style and class. The team competed in a number of individual and team events, brought home medals and posted some very impressive results in a number of events. In the very gruelling Triple Unders event Sydney McLennan won gold in the senior girls category and then went on to also win the Grand World Championship in the same event posting the best score across all females in the entire competition. Grace Moyer recorded a very impressive 4th place finish in 30

GRILLED CHEESE & APPLE CINNAMON SANDWICH Make as many as you need :) INGREDIENTS • 2 slices cinnamon raisin bread • Margarine or butter for spreading • 1 slices of processed cheese • 1/2 small apple, thinly sliced DIRECTIONS Brush inside of bread slices with a bit of butter or margarine. Lay a slice of cheese on one slice then layer thinly sliced pieces of apple. Butter other side of bread lightly and place on top. Lightly butter both sides of bread and grill on medium heat in skillet until golden brown on both sides and cheese has melted. Makes one sandwich. KIDS FAVORITE BLUEBERRY MUFFINS A great grab-and-go snack for little ones. INGREDIENTS • 2-1/2 cups pancake mix • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 egg • 2/3 cup water • 1/4 cup canola oil • 1-1/2 cups fresh blueberries DIRECTIONS In a large bowl combine pancake mix and sugar. In another bowl, whisk egg, water and oil. Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened (do not overmix). Fold in blueberries. Fill paper-lined muffin tins two-thirds full and bake at 400 degrees for 14-16 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Makes 1 dozen medium size muffins. Can also be made into mini-muffin size.

Steve steps out for stroke survivors When Steve McDonnell from Grimsby arrived at Hamilton General Hospital after suffering a stroke, he could move only his baby finger. Twenty-four hours later, he was able to take a step – the first in his journey to recovery. As a long-serving raiser and handler of guide dog puppies, he regularly walked them all around Grimsby and the Steve McDonnell Leash Free Dog Park is named in his honour. Regaining his strength so he can foster guide dogs again is a strong motivator in Steve’s rehabilitation. Although still recovering from his stroke, Steve will be co-hosting the up-

Temps and wings hot at Wing Ding It wasn’t just the wings that were hot - or honey garlic at the Rotary Club of Lincoln’s fourth annual Wing Ding held at Charles Daley Park last weekend. “The air was sweeter than usual at Charles Daley Park where the aroma of chicken wings were cooking all weekend long,” said Sarah Bradshaw, a member of the organizing committee. “Some of Niagara’s finest restaurants competed for the prestigious title of 2016 Fan Favourite.” Cold drinks were flowing from Great Lakes Brewery and Fielding Estates Winery served by hard working Rotarians, as well as pop and lemonade. “We had area musicians took the stage of the bandshell all weekend long entertaining the crowds, with everything from 50’s Rock & Roll

She started working as a commercial secretary, and during a visit to the United States, she met her first husband, where they raised two sons and a daughter. Lynn was then working for the Washington Post. When her marriage later broke up, she returned to Canada with her daughter, living in Lethbridge and Calgary and working in the hospitality business as a reservations manager. There she met and married Derek after which they returned to Ontario. Lynn then qualified as an Activation Coordinator for the elderly working at Seniors’ nursing homes in Southern Ontario. Tallman Funeral Homes of Beamsville is handling the arrangements and cremation has taken place. Donations may be contributed to the Alzheimer Society. While that was Bob Hope’s signature sign-off so, too, should it be Cathy McNiven’s. As many may know, Cathy retired after 25 years of dedicated service to the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce recently. She did such a good job, Eric Gilbert and I decided to come back (at different times, of course) for a second helping of chamber presidency - an easy choice knowing the chamber was always in good hands. Cathy, communities are always looking for champions to better their municipalities and organizations...you are certainly that - a champion. Thanks of all your years of effort, Mike.

Good news for Grimsby EYC After weeks of uncertainty and escalating fears a highly used service for young children, the Early Years Centre, seems to have gotten some very good news this week. With an Aug. 26 closure deadline still looming and no input having come back to board of management inquiries, some communications networked by MPP Tim Hudak may have solved the information impasse. The discussion among the Grimsby EYC board, Family and Children Services Niagara (which oversees Grimsby’s management), the Ministry of Education and Hudak appears to have achieved an agreement, still to be formally approved, which would see a new board established and the centre continue without interruption. Phew! M.W.

Carol, grandma had something in common There aren’t many people on this planet I would eat tomatoes for, but Carol Richmond was one of those people. My grandmother is the other. We were packed up and headed off to Lincoln Rotary Club’s Wing Ding on the weekend when we got Carol’s obit notice for this week’s edition. That was a shocker. Hundreds upon hundreds of kids got to know Carol and her hubby, Bob, who were the forces behind the Hockey School program for Grimsby Minor Hockey Association. The dynamic duo ran that school for 35-plus years before they retired from that endeavour. More recently, Carol had turned her time and attention toward another passion in her life, West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and its auxiliary. My first interaction with this couple came May 11, 1995. I remember the date exactly as I started my new job as managing editor of Grimsby Independent, West Lincoln Review and the Weekend Focus for Rannie Publications the day before. On that first day, I spent much of the day asking who I should speak to in an attempt mend fences as the standing for The Independent in the community was not good at that time. There were people in various walks of life who were mentioned sporadically but - on the sporting side - the Richmonds were mentioned universally as being respected and having their respective fingers on the pulse of the community. A quick phone call re-

MIKE WILLISCRAFT sulted in an immediate invite and at the prescribed hour I ventured over to their Casablanca Boulevard home. After a brief introduction at the door, Carole lead me back to the inner sanctum, also known as their beautifully landscaped backyard. Bob and Carol were just about to take a lunch break from gardening. “I was just about to whip up some sandwiches,” Carol said. “Nothing fancy.” “That would be great,” I responded. As she headed off, Bob and I started what would turn out to be a two-plus hour conversation about anything and everything in the Town of Grimsby. Both Carol and Bob were walking encyclopedias of information and were very willing to share their knowledge. They were very careful to frame what was fact and what was their opinion of certain situations, very tactful. For someone brand new to the community looking for a lifeline, these folks were it for me. When people are that involved, they get to know everyone. Essentially, from that day on,

if I needed something, a contact name or phone numbers, or something happened I could not quite understand, I could give the Richmonds a call and find out what the real story was. And that level of trust was secure as they have not steered me wrong, ever. When Carol returned with a tray of eats there were a couple of glasses of iced tea and two of the best tomato sandwiches fresh from their garden of course - you’ve ever seen, complete with mayo, lettuce and lightly toasted. Only problem, and I am not a picky eater, I have always hated raw tomatoes. Cooked or in a sauce, no problem. Raw? Nope. No chance. Well not that day. I ate every bit and every crumb off the plate. They were so good they made me want to like tomato sandwiches, but that day has still not arrived. After lunch and more lengthy chatting, I excused myself so they could return to their yardwork. I left their home with a full tummy and two great friends. There are hundreds, if not thousands in the community who have Richmond stories. This is merely one, no more or less important than anyone else’s, just and example of how two incredibly self-less people who were well-known volunteers kept giving to the community in ways behind the scenes of which not everyone would be aware. Deepest condolences from the whole NewsNow team to the Richmond family. RIP, Carol!
