Lincoln moves to RFP stage of transit plan No fee for initial test ridership By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Town of Lincoln is moving on to the next phase - the request for proposal (RFP) stage with its transit study. “Council endorsed the next step of staff issuing an RFP for a service provider,” said CAO Mike Kirkopoulos. “We are definitely taking a very incremental approach to transit, but hope that over the next 18 months we will gauge the success of this new transit service.” The Town of Lincoln’s intra-municipal pilot project’s main objective is to introduce and expose residents of Lincoln to a local transit system in an effort to better gauge citizen and community need, desire and readiness for this new municipal service offering. Council chambers was full for a meeting last week with more than 40 residents in attendance showing overwhelming support. “Transit systems are an important element of complete communities as they pro-

mote equity among the town’s residents by ensuring access to reliable, affordable transportation to access town amenities, services, and businesses,” said Mayor Sandra Easton. “Public transit is key to community livability and sustainability.” The Town of Lincoln’s transit pilot aims to: 1. Provide mobility to members of the community; 2. Contribute to a higher quality of life, including improved health and community participation rates; 3. Facilitate economic development and support labour workforce development/accessibility; 4. Support future plans for sustainable development and intensification, as outlined in the Town’s Official Plan, and; 5. Support the introduction of the future GO train service in Lincoln. The Town is not purchasing any capital as a result of this pilot and there will be no fee for use as part of the initial pilot.

Grimsby bowler earns gold at nationals Five-Pin bowlers from Team Ontario travelled to Saskatchewan over Canada Day weekend with a Grimsby bowler returning with a gold medal. Bekah Akerley was a member of the Ladies Teaching Team, which pulled a significan upset in taking top honours. The tournament was the held in Regina from June 30â€“ July 3. The tournament was the Master Bowlers Assoc. of Canada Nationals Championships. Eight provinces participated and each team bowled the other provinces three times to determine the winners. â€œMy team was a

very long shot to win the tournament as it was a pins over average tournament and we had to spot six out of seven teams anywhere from 118 to 272 pins each game,â€? said coach Maureen Poole of Grimsby. The only team that was even with us was BC. It took until the last frame of the last game to declare us champions. If we had not won the last match and totals we would have ended up with the silver medal, but fate had it that my team bowled awesome and took six points and the silver medal team from Quebec only took two bringing us to first place.â€?

ter and ensure it would be a proud moment for Canadians celebrating 200 years of peace between Canada and the United States. His commitment to the Rankin Cancer Run initially launched in 2005 as a one-day event in St. Catharines raised $230,000 with all proceeds going to local cancer care facilities. By the end of 2010 the Run had raised $1.9 million and at the end of 2015 the total proceeds going back to the Niagara community were $5.5 million.

Bentley hosts tourney Aug. 11 Always wanted to see your name at the top of a golf tournament leaderboard? You can, by participating in the annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament and donating to the Grimsby Community Fund. The Grimsby Community Fund (GCF) was launched in 2014, under the umbrella of the Niagara Community Foundation. Mayor Bob Bentley was instrumental in establishing the Grimsby Community Fund and continues to work toward raising its profile. The first year the fund received support from the Mayor’s Golf Tournament was 2016. “Last year we made a simple suggestion that golfers were welcome to donate to the Grimsby Community Fund and that each donation would be matched by the Town,” said Bentley. “And what a response we had!” “On behalf of town council, I was thrilled to present a cheque for $25,000, knowing that every cent of it was staying in town and supporting our charities.” This year, the golf tournament organizers are introducing the Tournament Leaderboard as a fun way to celebrate the generosity of the donors and highlight the matching-donation program. All donors will be acknowledged on the Leaderboard at the event. The Town

will match up to $25,000 in total donations. “The impact that this kind of financial gift has is enormous for our local charities,” said fund chair Gary Evans. “So many groups have benefited - the FORT, the Grimsby Public Library, West Niagara Second Stage Housing and Counselling, the Conservation Club - and dozens more.” The Mayor’s Golf Tournament also supports the Jim Wright Memorial Recreation Fund with a portion of the registration fee going directly to the Fund which provides groups with assistance funding for nontraditional leisure activities. The tournament takes place on Friday, Aug. 11 at Twenty Valley Golf and Country Club with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The registration fee of $130 includes your green fee, cart, dinner and prizes. The fee for Twenty Valley members is $95. Players can register individually or as a foursome. For those who aren’t planning to golf but still want to show their support, a donation of $200 or more to GCF secures a seat for the dinner afterward. Tax receipts will be issued for all donations. Dole out regional seats for merit It was pretty surprising to see an email come in last week from the good mayor of West Lincoln. It’s been a couple of months since the last correspondence. The latest offering was addressed to the editor of Niagara This Week soliciting a story in support of the good mayor’s campaign to get a regional councillor seat for his municipality. Remember after the last election? The good mayor was working his regional colleagues as he wanted to be regional chair....only way that can happen is if the municipality has two seats at the table. West Lincoln should get a seat when it is appropriate, not to fill political aspirations. If it was based on the merit of council performance, it would not happen at all. M.W.

Thanks for the memories, Junior This space has been overtaken too many times by complete and utter crud (I could be more crude, but wouldn’t want to insight anything). So this week I am dedicating this space to one of my childhood heros, affectionately known in the harness racing industry as Junior. Junior, aka John Campbell, has been the Gretzky of harness racing, the Picasso of Grand Circuit Week and Muhammad Ali of major stake races. He is 62 years old, not old, but in the harness game, a 62-year-old body has more miles on it than a space shuttle. He will end up just shy of $300 million in purse earnings. He has finished each year as the number one or number two driver in purse earnings from 1979-2002. He has won more than 10,000 races. Not bad for a kid from a hamlet outside London called Ailsa Craig. Going right back to college, I was only nervous on two occasions when planning an interview for an assignment. In second year college, 1984, I was assigned to get a Steve Penney related story from Ken Dryden, who was then serving as the Ontario Youth Minister. He was speaking at my school regarding his portfolio. Problem was, he had given NO hockey related interviews, he said, as he wanted to focus on his youth jobs task at hand. I played the poor student (going to get a failing grade on a missed assignment, which I would have) and he gave me a 45 second interview from the time it took to walk from the Humber gym to the restau-

MIKE WILLISCRAFT rant where he was speaking at a lunch just down the hall. It was his only hockey interview, and I sold it to the Toronto Star as well. Fast forward two years. I got out of school, worked in restaurants for a while in Toronto, then got a gig at the Globe & Mail. I was there about a year, then took my favourite job of all time, Managing Editor of The Standardbred. One of the things I did there was combine my love of history and respect for the heritage of the sport with a new feature idea, dubbed, The Tack Room. There, I did interviews with drivers, trainers and owners of horses who stood out to me in the 70s, when I grew up, and beyond. The first one on my list, my favourite horse growing up, Derby’s Gent. He was a legendary gelding well-known throughout the province and, at one time, he held track records at 5-6 tracks I can think of, including my hometown track in Clinton, London’s Western Fair Raceway and Goderich Raceway, which was the next town over from me. Before Junior went to The Meadowlands and became all world, he was dominating at Windsor

Raceway, which was basically Derby’s Gent’s home track. I don’t even remember how I got Junior’s home number in New Jersey, but I do recall being super nervous going over my questions before placing the call. Of course it was a hullaballoo about nothing as this fellow was and is a prince. It helped that I knew every nook and cranny of all the tracks he cut his teeth at and the interview rolled along like I had known him my whole life. The main thing I recall from that piece was Junior noting how much he learned from Derby’s Gent. Not only did he have tremendous heart and ability but he was smart. A common thread among the really good horses is their brain power, and don’t underestimate that. Horses are not all created equal. They are not unlike humans in that you, good reader, likely know someone with a world of talent at something but unfortunately has a 10-cent-head on their shoulders. To excel, people, and horses, need both. Junior recognized that and soaked up every bit of knowledge Derby’s Gent could offer. So, this Sunday, Junior will sit in a race bike for the final time in his legendary career at my hometown track, Clinton Raceway. It is Legends Dan, a biennial event which brings together greats of the past and today. If you were ever a fan of harness racing or are looking for something to do on your Sunday afternoon (July 30) make the drive to Clinton to give Junior the send-off he most assuredly deserves.
