By Katherine Grant For NewsNow It is not exactly a familiar sight in the Town of Grimsby: security guards now flank the parking lot entrances of the Grimsby Mews Plaza on Main Street East. The guards have been monitoring the parking lot – used by Shoppers Drug Mart, Dollarama and medical offices – for a few weeks now, beginning at about the same time as construction began at the east end of the lot on what will be a new Scotiabank. Anyone who is not a customer at the plaza is being told by security they must move their car. “People used to park in the area down at that end of the lot and walk over to the hospital,” said Dwight Bingle, one of the security guards hired to monitor the lot. “Now they are parking here to avoid paying the $5 to park at the hospital. It got so bad, the pharmacist came in to work one day and couldn’t find a place to park.” West Lincoln Memorial Hospital spokesperson Heather Pullen said the owner of the plaza notified the hospital three weeks ago that a former

New arena, splashpad, skatepark for West Lincoln West Lincoln Township Council has voted to build a new multi-purpose community centre at the fairgrounds property in Smithville on West Street. “I’m elated that council made the decision to move forward,” said Mayor Doug Joyner. The mayor noted that the subject of what to do with the aging arena has been considered at many meetings since 2010. “We have discussed whether or not to renovate, retrofit or build a new arena. Now the decision has been made to not throw good money after bad.”

The option selected by council follows the recommendation contained in the 2013 Fairgrounds Master Plan and Arena Feasibility Study, which was to replace the existing facility with a completely new multi-purpose community centre, including an NHL regulation single pad, walking track, community hall, splash pad and skateboard park. The new facility project will be undertaken as a “design build” project, with a projected cost of $11 million. Joyner said he anticipates the shovel going in the ground in 2015 with an tentative opening set for Septem-

ber 2016. Staff will be exploring all potential funding sources including grants, partnering, infrastructure funding, donations, and fundraising. It is anticipated that approval of the final project, including scope and cost, will be put before the new council after this October’s election. The mayor said council will be looking to the community to fundraise to help off-set costs just as was done to build the present arena back in 1972. The next step will be to hire a project management consultant to oversee the project.

She also noted the number of parking spaces at WLMH is appropriate to the size of the hospital and although there are no plans to enlarge the lot, the situation will be monitored. The $5 fee charged to park goes into the hospital budget. Meanwhile, over in the Grimsby Mews parking lot, tempers having been flaring between those parking illegally and the security guards.

“I actually had one person say ‘what are you going to do if someone ignores what you say?’’’ said Bingle. Bingle would prefer people move their vehicles to an appropriate lot. “It is no different than if a person was to park their car in your driveway,” said Mike Woods, NRP District 14 commanding officer. towed away if they are blatantly parking on private property.” Towing companies, while licenced by the Police Services Board, set their own rates and that can be quite costly. “To get their cars back, they will have to pay towing charges and for storage of their vehicle,” said Woods. And if you park your car and then head over to the hospital, expect to be approached by a security guard and asked to move your car. “It really doesn’t matter if it is only for five minutes, and I have heard that again and again. Once your business is concluded please move your car,” said Bingle.

It’s all Happening this weekend The Happening at The Forty runs from July 24-26 It is Celtic music – with a twist. That is possibly the best way to describe the music of Rutherford and Robichaud. “We play the Celtic genre in the folk tradition but with our own twist,” explained Andrew Robichaud, one half of the duo which includes Connor Schmidt. The pair will be entertaining the crowds this Thursday night at Murray Street Park as part of The Happening at The Forty. “We play the guitar and the fiddle and like to include pop music from Great Big Sea and Mumford and Sons to make it more fun,” said Andrew, who has been performing with Connor for two years now at venues such as the Peach Festival, Ball’s Falls and as part of their high school’s, Blessed Trinity, band.

Connor moved here six years ago from New Brunswick and the first place he headed was the Fun School of Music on Main Street in Grimsby. He credits Tom and Jen Elgersma for being supportive and encouraging the pair to pursue their musical dreams. Both Connor and Andrew have been running a camp for kids at the school this summer. Events at the park begin at 7:45 p.m. and wrap up with a fireworks display.

Anybody who has watched this TV award show and was still awake at the end of it wished they had called it “The Harry Houdinis” and made the whole damn thing disappear. Sales of plaques and trophies in Canada and the US top $3 billion. Trophies once were rare, special and quite dramatic. Devised during the dawn of warfare the very first trophy consisted of the severed head of the enemy impaled on a stick. I’m not suggesting we return to this practise but it would sure boost the Nielsen ratings for the Super Bowl’s postgame show. “You know Phil, Peyton Manning doesn’t look all that intimidating without his body but he’s still got that competitive fire in his eyes.” Giving away hundreds of thousands of trophies in kids’ sports leagues only serves to ensure great attendance at the year-end banquets. ‘Participation trophies’ do little more than reward children for underachieving and kills their incentive to win something meaningful. Life is not a group hug or a sports league where everyone who signs on is an automatic winner. Sorry but life is hard and frequently unfair so overcoming the losses is how we get better at playing the game. Kids that are constantly being congratulated for lame accomplishments are in for an earthquake of disappointment when they do have to face failure. And they will. Small failures along the way help kids handle the big ones and make a real win all that much sweeter. A word of praise, a pat on the back, a hearty thumbs up, a slap on the bum - these are much more powerful motivators than a truckload of shiny trinkets. Sorry to get preachy on you but I’ve thought a lot about this while I was preparing my acceptance speech for the International Curmudgeon Society’s Sourpuss Of The Year. What the hell, it’s better than a poke in the eye, plus there’s a meal and some sort of plaque involved.

A Grimsby firefighter, the late Geoff Yellow, loved his motorcycle. In winter, Geoff would roll his bike into his livingroom to store it until spring. At Christmas his family would find it strung with lights as

it stood in for a tree. The problem with this Christmas tree was that it came with an alarm which made for some startling moments. Chickenman, as he was known as a member of Brothers’ Keepers Motorcycle Club, was killed in a motorcycle accident May 13,

2011. Geoff was returning home from a ride to Port Dover. At the time of his death he was serving as vice-president of the MC. On the weekend of July 12, friends, family and fellow riders gathered at Beamsville’s Royal Canadian Legion to honour Geoff by

It was a highly suitable tribute: Geoff was also a passionate fundraiser. “Every year he volunteered for the Fergie Jenkins Foundation, flying off to Arizona,” said his daughter Heather Peters. “He was a good man,” said his son David. “He loved being a firefighter, he loved motorcycles and he loved volunteering.” While the idea to raise funds for the camp was David’s, he is quick to give credit to Geoff’s fellow MC members. “I give all the credit to these guys, I basically just had the idea and they went for it,” said David. “Camp Bucko just struck my heart when I heard it was for kids that have been burned.” Camp Bucko is provided free of charge for children

The Eco-Defenders were just part of the huge volunteer base which made Wing Ding happen. The groups’ efforts resulted in just two bags of garbage being produced at the three-day event. Visitors and Romby’s were all winners at Rotary Club of Lincoln’s Wing Ding last weekend. “Romby’s emerged as the big winner,” said Mike Jenken, one of Rotary’s orgranizers. Romby’s won “most creative sauce”, “hot sauce” and “fan favourite”, but visitors were the big winners with Relay, Iggy’s Pub and Beamsville Neighbourhood Pizza wing creations also available. Seven bands also performed over the three-day event, which book-ended a rainy Saturday with a great Friday and sunny Sunday.

Parking issue magnified So the good news, one supposes, is Grimsby is getting a new banking institution in a new Scotiabank, which is going into the Grimsby Mews Plaza - aka Shoppers Drug Mart east. The bad news, the loss of “available” parking spots in that plaza has caused a major, ongoing issue for businesses trying to provide suitable parking for their customers on that site. For years, visitors and even staff from WLMH, as well as a host of other folks, have made use of the lot at Main Street East and Governors Road. Years ago, parking at WLMH was $2. It has gone up a couple of time with considerable angst with each rise. At $5 currently, it is much cheaper than urban hospital parking fees to be sure, but even with that the lot is limited in size. While the issue is yet another reason to get the new hospital built (and fix the parking issue at the same time) people have to know that is a private lot as are others in the area. It won’t make things pleasant, but it is important to understand. M.W.

Warm welcome to old friends The rollercoaster kept rolling this week, so quick and important housekeeping to deal with off the bat. By far the most important, many of you will have dealt with Stephanie Sisler at one point or another. Steph went off last week on a sudden medical leave. She is expecting her second child and, as a precaution, some issues necessitated her taking an immediate leave....and yes, she knows full well I am letting you all know this. Steph has done a lot of great work since joining us full-time last fall and we look forward to having her back. In the meantime, another couple of doors have opened and in walked two former co-workers, both who are excellent at what they do. No stranger to Niagara West, Katherine Grant (back to her maiden name...many will know her by Nadeau) will be helping me out for a while. Katherine was another employee deemed expendable by my competition and I greatly appreciate that. For those who don’t know her, she is a superior feature writer – as you may have noticed with her piece on Ida Guarascia a couple of weeks ago – and she is the best editor I have worked with in my near30-years in the industry. Her availability could be likened to the Edmonton Oilers releasing Wayne

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Gretzky so, yes, she will make a nice addition to the team. As well, Jen Mendonca has arrived to take on a full-time sales role. As I said going right back to Day 1, Year 3 would be a major year of development. Adding a full-time sales person was part of that plan as was adding new publications like ClubWEST Magazine, which came out three weeks ago. We are already working on our second edition which will come out Sept. 4 to 15,000 lucky souls in the west end. We’ve got other irons in the fire, but you will see and hear about those a little further down the road. Jen is also no stranger to Niagara West having lived and worked in Grimsby in the past (and she is still playing softball here, too). So, we’re retooled and ready to roll. ***** Next, Saturday’s rain pretty much washed away Movie Night In The Park and that is too bad. I feel bad for Rob Golfi and

his team who put in a ton of effort into making that one of the town’s most successful events. Good thing they came up with a new house-to-house campaign the week before, which garnered about 1,000 lbs. of food donations for Grimsby Benevolent Fund. But if you had a bag of food packed up and ready to go to Centennial Park, you can still drop it by the GBF. The need is still there. Also suffering Mother Nature’s wrath Saturday was Lincoln Rotary’s Wing Ding. Luckily for those folks, Friday night and Sunday were also part of the schedule and they were allowed to make up some of that lost ground. It was hopping Sunday afternoon I can tell you. Great event. Still building, but going the right direction to be sure. Interesting item to note there, with the hustle by volunteers who managed the clean-up, the threeday event only generated two bags of garbage. All the rest was organized into recycling bins. NIce work! ****** Looking forward to lunch on Thursday. I will be meeting the fellow who has stepped up and agreed to cover the cost of Ida Guarascia’s prosthetic procedures this fall as she continues her recovery from cancer surgery. The two will meet for the first time. Can’t wait.
