Injunction dismissed VPS demolished after stop-work order quashed The fate of Vineland Public School’s 1895 building was sealed Monday with the Ontario Superior Court’s ruling that work on Twenty Valley Public School could resume immediately. On Monday, July 20, Justice Richard Lococo dismissed Brett House’s application for the extension of an injunction preventing work on the 1895 portion of the former Vineland Public School building. In dismissing the application, Justice Lococo stated that if the injunction order was granted, it would have been highly likely that students in the Town of Lincoln would have had nowhere to go come the first day of school. “Yesterday afternoon the Ontario Superior Court ruled against our motion to the extend the
temporary injunction against demolition of Vineland’s historic 1895 oneroom school house that the Court issued on Tuesday, July 7th,” noted House. “As a result, we have ended our related application for judicial review of the earlier decisions rendered by the Town of Lincoln and the Province of Ontario against designation of the school house as an official municipal or provincial heritage site.” Chair of the District School Board of Niagara’s Board of Trustees Sue Barnett said the Board is pleased with the ruling. “Students, their families and the community have been anticipating this new school ever since the conclusion of the ARC in 2013. Biodigester grants now in jeopardy By Mike Williscraft NewsNow While the provincial government has rejected a grant submission for Grimsby’s biodigester, the Town has approved a full guarantee for the project’s price tag for construction. At council’s meeting Monday, a $4.5 million loan guarantee was approved for the Grimsby Energy project being bulit on Sobie Road. “We’re trying to convince the province to reverse,” said Ald. Steve Berry, adding provincial officials rejected the application saying they have done their share by buying the hydro generated through the FIT (Feed-In
Tariff) program already. The 20-year FIT contract will generate about $20 million for the Town. Hydro officials have not released an operating budget for the biodigester project. Niagara West Glanbrook MP Dean Allison said the delays caused by the province rejecting the grant application have jeopardized federal monies, too. “These are supposed to be third, third, third funding formulas. It will be a hard sell, and time is running out, if the province does not come through,” said Allison. Berry said a final decision should be soon.

Garry Brown, Giant Tiger owner said he understands the plight of his southside colleagues. “I would be very upset as a retailer if you blocked my entrance as well. If a truck has to be on the street it should be in front of businesses that don’t require foot traffic,” said Brown. “I think the market should stay downtown either on Main or Ontario. We just have to make sure it fits everyone’s expectations, it shouldn’t affect the sales of the businesses that pay taxes in the downtown core or our foot traffic. We already give up our parking.” Seaborn said some changes will be visible at this week’s market and rearranging the streetscape will be a work in progress. And that is welcome news to Brown and others as the overall preference is to see things work out for the market downtown. “Shifting vendors to the north side would do nothing but shift the problem,” said Brown, adding Ontario Street from the rail tracks to Adelaide Street would be a good Plan B.

Book a dream come true for Grimsby woman Autumn Love is a story of friendship, bridging cultural differences, and ultimately love just as the title implies. The novel was written by Harjeet Dhillon, 33, and is her first book – though now that she has tasted success she is eager to get on with a second. “Since I was a child, it was my dream to be an author,” said Dhillon. “One day I woke up and started typing away and my brain was overflowing with ideas. I sent it to the publisher in February and it has been available since April 28.” Lonely in her marriage, writing the novel proved to be a good creative outlet for the Grimsby resident. The idea for the book, a love story set in Canada with an undercurrent of traditions from her Indian heritage, just came to her one day and the words began to flow. Although not biographical in nature, the friendship relied upon by protagonist Autumn does mirror that of Dhillon’s relationship with her own best friend. As she was writing the book

Summer camp gives kids a taste of life as a firefighter
Dressed in bunker gear, held firmly in place by the old standby duct tape, Jack Lauff ran the full length of the fire hall dragging behind him a fire ‘victim’. He had already hoisted a coil of heavy fire hose onto his shoulders and was preparing to knock down a fire in the parking lot. Jack was one of about 25 kids who spent time at the Grimsby Fire Hall getting in some time learning about what it takes to be a firefighter. “That hose was heavy but I am having a great time,” said Jack. Jesse Staples was also at last week’s camp. “I thought the fire extinguisher would be all foam not powdery,” said Jesse, who thought that was a pretty cool thing to learn. Recreational supervisor Patrick Sheehan, a Brock student who plans to be a teacher, said the kids have had a taste of many aspects of fire prevention and safety.

On Saturday, the crowd at Happening At The Forty might do a double-take when they hear that same voice coming from Braydan Doucette, 12. While he hasn’t had a career as long and storied as the country music superstar, Doucette has played music for about as long as he possible. “I played my first guitar when I was two years old,” he said, and has continued to play since. ville he moved to playing in a rock band camp at Grimsby’s Fun School Of Music, and has taken lessons now for three years. “I guess I do sound a little bit like Johnny Cash,” he said, echoing comments from his parents and instructors. Humbly though, he says he has work to do before surpassing Cash or his other idols, and the Gainsborough Grade 8 student is still considering if music will be a factor in choosing his high school. Besides Cash, Doucette will also include in his set music from American punk band Green Day and English musician Ed Sheeran. He has two sets as part of the Fun School

Thursday from 7:45-9:45 p.m. will feature Josh and Steve at Murray Street Park with fireworks lighting up the sky at dusk. There will be live music Friday, July 24 in Coronation Park between noon and 2 p.m. from Two Sheets To The Wind, and later in the park between 6-11 p.m. will be Jazz and Wine By The Creek. Saturday, July 25 there will be music all day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Main Street stage in downtown Grimsby and acts as well throughout the day at Coronation Park.

They include a bread maker with an open fire pit, a blacksmithing couple bringing their forge, and a spinner, spinning wheel included. “Part of the village will be set up as a soldiers’ camp,” Conklin said. “You will see open canopies, soldiers cleaning their muskets, in their uniforms.” The big show for the day is a 2 p.m. parade from the post office to Coronation Park.

Farmers market can be good for all Great to see Giant Tiger owner Garry Brown weighing in on some of the concerns downtown merchants have been voicing of late regarding the Grimsby Farmers Market. Being the biggest retailer in the core, it would be easy for him to say, “I have no problem. What’s the big deal?” and that would make sense since he is on the north side of Main Street and – as he noted – unaffected by set-up structure of vendors. It was very good of him to note he would not want a wall of tents and vehicles in front of his shop either and he did clearly voice the majority opinion, in essence, the market can do a lot of good for downtown but it must not be at the expense of any merchant. Is Grimsby’s roll coming up snake eyes? If you weren’t part of the contingent which was nervous before, you may want to consider it. Dealing with things relating to Grimsby Power, Grimsby Energy, – or for us old-timers who still call it Grimsby Hydro – is tough because whether you are media, a member of the general public or even a member of town council (which ultimately holds the responsibility for all things hydro) information is not just an open book. In terms of general operations on a day-to-day basis, hydro officials are entitled to operate the utility as a private company, for all intents and purposes. It most certainly is not, of course, and years of whining about the closed nature of the most valuable resource in the Town’s control has done and will continue to do bupkis, to be precise. Past members of council have been infuriated that they could not get information they desired from Grimsby Power’s administration...to no avail. One can go all the way back to the start when, if memory serves, about $1 million was spent installing fibre optic lines as part of a new endeavour. The money was gone and work was complete before council even knew what was happening. That did not go down well with council, and it should not have. Throw in the cogenerator which has gobbled up another million-ish dollars parked on the front lawn of town hall. It really should be painted white, have a trunk and tail added and let’s call
MIKE WILLISCRAFT it what it clearly is. Today we have the biodigester on the front burner. Its projected cost is basically in the $4-million ballpark. The ground has been broken and it is expected to be online this fall. The upside of the whole endeavour is the potential for $25 million to be generated over the life of a 20year Feed-In Tariff program (FIT) agreed to with the province for the hydro generated by the plant. That’s great! As has been stated here before, it would be awesome to see the operating budget for the facility rolled out for the public to see and it would have been even better to do that two years ago so the public could have some say as to how their money is being spent. I really don’t want to hear about the revenue generated anymore. Even that is not the most pressing issue with the biodigester right now. The biggest issue is, who the heck is paying for the construction of this thing. As soon as I heard Grimsby Energy was proceeding with construction with no grants in hand, I was
scratching my head. Sure, it was likely, but geez! Now the provincial folks have thrown a monkey wrench into the whole thing by rejecting the application for $1.5 million saying they’re coughing up their share via the FIT contract, which is silly at best. One must wonder what is really going on if that is the best they can muster. Potentially, their third has gone up in smoke... or compost as it were. But their tardiness in the whole process – one would think a flat rejection on such a simple point would have come before an application even went in – means the federal $1.5 is now suspect due to timing with a fall election looming. A line will be drawn and all bets will be off soon, which could leave Grimsby holding the bag for the entire construction cost. Me thinks that was not in the plans.... I would guess there is a 2-3 week window to get this all done and, right now, nobody has a handle on which way it will go. It is likely even detractors, and there are many, would not want to be in an “I told you so” position on this one. The stakes are just too high. The problem is, if the grants fail, no doubt Grimsby Power, Grimsby Energy, Grimsby Hydro will simple pay the freight internally over years, it will cost the town money which could have gone into the municipality’s coffers, and NOBODY will know the true financial impact because they don’t have to give it up. That’s sad.

Early Christmas gift for injured officer A Christmas in July fundraiser set for this Sunday will help out a local police officer injured in the line of duty. Phil Sheldon suffered serious burns during a fire and explosion at a Vineland home July 5 and is expected to need months to recover. “I read about the police officer and decided I needed to do something to help,” said Edye Cripps. This Sunday, July 26 from 1-4
p.m. there will be a vendor’s fair at her home located at 4345 Arejay Ave., in Beamsville. Featured will be Pampered Chef items, Fifth Avenue Jewelry, Scentsy, Origami Owl, fudge, soaps, and many others. Cripps will also be accepting donations and plans to deliver the funds directly to the District 8, Niagara Regional Police detachment in Grimsby. She is hoping people will come out to support Officer Sheldon.
