No rain, no burn: Chief Cain By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The “no burn” ban has been implemented across Niagara West for nearly three weeks and there is no end in sight. Despite that, fire safety measures have been implemented to allow tonight (Thursday’s) Happening at The Forty fireworks to go off without a hitch. “As of now (Tuesday) it’s a go,” said Grimsby Fire Chief Mike Cain. “We have a fire safety plan in place. The ground in the area will be dampened.” Cain noted there could always be wind concerns night of, just as Town of Lincoln faced when they had to cancel their Canada Day fireworks display at Charles Daley Park. The drought this year has been more sustained than Cain has seen in his career. He noted 2012 saw similar conditions but that did not last as long. “It is not taking much this year. We’ve seen spot fires break out from cigarette butts being flicked from cars,” said Cain. As of last week, the burn ban is Niagara Region wide. “You just have to look up and down your street to see the effect,” said Cain. “We need 3-4 days of sustained rain to be able to lift the ban. This few drops here and there we’ve been getting has no effect at all.” Cain noted the burn ban means no open-air burns whatsoever, including camp grounds. Even barbecues need special consideration. “We had someone dump what they thought was an extinguished charcoal barbecue into a compost and there was still some coals. That results in a small fire,” noted Cain.

Niagara West Glanbrook MPP Tim Hudak took a tour of Grimsby’s Early Years Centre on Grand Avenue in Grimsby. The centre is slated to close Aug. 26 with no date set for a reopening at this point. He accepted a letter of concern from Rachael Cornfield, 7, an EYC alum.

them they no longer sustain the management workload. “The Ministry of Education took over responsibility for the Early Years program in 2014. Since that time, the workload for the board has increased,” said Backman.

“When we notified them we had to step aside, they said, ‘oh, the transition will be seamless’. Uh, that’s not happening.” Backman said there has been

While Backman said she remains optimistic, she said she has to wonder what is happening. “We have a meeting this week with parents as we try to figure out how to have our voices heard. Tim Hudak

Beamsville teen boards the Pinehurst express Ethan Siebert has punched his ticket to Pinehurst, one of the most storied golf courses in the world. The 15-year-old Beamsville resident earned his way to the 2016 U.S. Kids Teen World Golf Championship hosted at the venerable course which has played host to three U.S. Opens. To get there, Siebert played in the spring/fall U.S. Kids tournament events held at various courses througout Niagara. He accumulated enough points to qualify for the Pinehurst event.

ETHAN SIEBERT A member at Lookout Golf and Country Club and Grade 11 student at Blessed Trinity in the fall, Siebert started playing golf at the age of 10. When the sport became a passion, he gave up hockey and baseball to focus on golf.

“I like winning but it is the challenge that each round brings I like the best,” said Siebert. “One hole can change the outcome of a tournament.” At Pinehurst, he will compete against a field of youth golfers from 34 countries. The 11th annual event runs July 2730. It is a major championship event for youth 13 years and older. Over the four-day event, golfers will have a practice round, followed by two official tournament rounds, and a skills challenges.

Lincoln implements water restrictions

Non-compliance could create more problems The affect of dry weather conditions is expanding to day to day residential life. The Town of Lincoln’s Public Works Department reminds residents to abide by water use restrictions put in place from June 1 to Aug. 31 this summer. If a resident’s address ends with an odd number 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 they are permitted to use water outdoors (to water lawns, gardens and trees, for example) only on odd-numbered dates of the month. If a resident’s home address ends with an even number 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 they are permitted to use water outdoors only on even-numbered dates of the month. “Please note that widespread non-compliance with this condition from By-Law #01-134 (or a period of extended drought) could result in shortages or infrastructure damage that would necessitate a total ban on outdoor watering,” said Adam Allcock, Lincoln’s manager, water & waste water. WingDing takes over Charles Daley Park A wide array of chicken wings is certainly the order of the day at Lincoln Rotary Club’s Wing Ding this weekend but it is definitely not the only thing. “New for 2016 is the Rotary Corn Booth,” said one of the event’s organizers, Sarah Bradshaw. “Members of our hardworking club in partnership with Hildreth Farms will be selling corn on the cob. Proceeds will be going towards Polio Plus, Rotary international’s Polio Immunization campaign.” The event gets underway tomorrow (Friday) at 4 p.m. and runs til 10 p.m. Friday is also Cruise Night from 6-10 p.m. Saturday Wing Ding runs noon-10 p.m, and Sunday it starts and noon and will wrap up at 6 p.m. “Its going to be a great week-

end. We are so lucky to have so many local supporters, it makes for a great community event,” noted Bradshaw. Throughout the weekend live entertainment will be a constant: Friday, 50s in Colour and Selective Soul will be on the stage: Saturday, True Country, Jeff Brown Band and New Kid In Town, and: Sunday, Kyle Pacey and the Max Hiller Band. As well, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, celebrity judges will assess creative and hot sauces. At 5 p.m. the fan favourite for the weekend will be named. Romby’s, Manhattan Bar & Grill and Your Neighbourhood Pizza will vie for the coveted title. “We’ve partnered with Fielding Estates Winery so we’ll be serving their wines this year,” added Bradshaw. 2 LOCATIONS:

A round table discussion hosted Tuesday by MP Dean Allison confirmed one thing: the local agriculture sector is feeling the heat when it comes to the ongoing drought. Allison is championing the issue to find a long-term solution to the water crisis facing farmers. Allison held the round table with key industry stakeholders from the tender fruit, grape growing and greenhouse industries in Niagara. “Given that we’re dealing with one of the worst droughts on record, we need to find a way to help farmers survive,” said Allison. “It’s ridiculous that we live between two Great Lakes and have a shortage of water.” Tender fruit grower, Len Troup said, “What we have is two months without any rain. There has been nothing.” The participants talked about a number of options to give growers access to both irrigation and clean water for use on the farm. They said it’s a matter of food safety, economic development and dealing with climate change. “There is no other issue that we’ve been talking about that is more important or more relevant,” said Lincoln Mayhor Sandra Easton. All stakeholders will be meeting again to map out their next steps.

Local cherries perfect for summertime treat Judging by the filled parking lot out at Puddicombe Farms, this year’s crop of cherries must be stellar. So why not use them in a great summer treat! CHERRY COBBLER INGREDIENTS • 3-3/4 cups all purpose flour, plus more for rolling • 4 tsp baking powder • 1-1/2 tsp salt • 1 cup sugar • 3/4 cup very cold, unsalted butter • 2 cups cold heavy

cream plus more for brushing • 3 lbs fresh cherries, pitted • 4 tsp cornstarch • 1 tsp vanilla extract DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt and 1/2 cup of the sugar. Using large holes

on a box grater, grate butter into flour. With a fork, stir in cream until dough just comes together. On a floured surface roll out dough to a 3/4” thickness. With a knife or biscuit cutter, cut out 8-12 round or squares of dough. In a bowl combine cherries, rest of sugar, cornstarch and vanilla. Divide mixture among four, 1 to 1-1/2 cup ramekins or pour mixture into

a 9x13 glass baking. Top each individual ramekin with 2-3 biscuits or lay all on top of the 9x13” pan. Brush tops with cream. Bake cobblers on a rimmed baking sheet until biscuits are golden and juices are bubbling, 40-45 minutes, rotating them halfway through. Let cool 15 minutes then serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream. Serves 8.

Reinforcing FORT

FORT got a little boost from proceeds from the grand opening of Hair Whispers this month. Nearly $200 was raised to support the youth program organization. The new shop which features all thing hair care recently opened at 4696 Bartlett Road in Beamsville, just south from the South Service Road.

Long road for WL plan So the Township of West Lincoln took another step down a road its council hopes will lead to a revitalization of something which resembles a more traditional commercial core. While the intention is to be respected, it is extremely difficult to be optimistic given the track record which the township has amassed - not good. It is noted they are looking to add 25 parking spots in Smithville’s core as part of the plan. Great! Without convenient parking, even a good business cannot compete with the level of convenience consumers demand these days. If they reinstate 25 that will come close to off-setting what council agreed to have removed in the recent downtown renovation, so back to square one there. Up hill? You bet! M.W.

Best in West gives some surprises Lots going on so let’s jump right in.... Best In The West - if you have arrived at this page, you have undoubtedly perused some of the ads published by various winners in a host of categories in this year’s reader survey. What surprises me, and it really shouldn’t after all this time, is how some of the top vote-getters make me scratch my head a bit, not in a bad way, but more of, “yes, I can see that. They do a good job. I just didn’t really think about them.” And there can be a host of reasons for that kind of reaction. Maybe I know someone who has a business in the same category and tend to deal with them for whatever product or service. We are all creatures of habit, and I tend to be very loyal, so that is easy to see happening. It could be nothing more than habit. “I’ve always gone to X,” is what you may be thinking. So, just to stir in a little of our ongoing “Shop Locally” theme this week, take a good look at all the winners. I can guarantee you there will be businesses listed in there you don’t even know exist. For some of them, they may offer a product or service you don’t need every week or even every year, but if you have a leaky basement, who do you call? Give that section a look and give someone a try. Step out of that comfort zone, if you have never been to one of the places. Some I can vouch for, some no, as I have never

It does not matter what widget you are looking for, you can go to a major outlet out of town and find things cheaper almost always. But if you want convenience, service and local options, your merchant down the street is the place to go. Ok, off the soapbox for today.... Local kids doing neat things is a theme I always love. This week we have two such locals carrying the “flag” both for the area and the country. Elisa Vandersloot of Grimsby, who was featured in last week’s edition of NewsNow did very well at the CanAmMex regatta in Florida. Elisa was competing as a member of the Canadian Junior National Rowing Team. She earned a silver in the double and gold in the quad. Well done, Elisa. On land, we have 15-year-old Ethan Siebert of Beamsville, who will head south next week to

take part in the U.S. Kids Teen World Golf Championship. That is pretty exciting all on its own, but when you put getting to play Pinehurst in the mix, well, that is just plain special. Pinehurst is one of the premier courses in the world. I can think of three-dozen rabid golfers I know who would love a chance to play there, but have not. After next week, Ethan can scratch that off the ol bucket list! He earned his way there by playing local tournaments and accumulating points to qualify for the Teen Worlds.. In all, 34 countries will be represented by youth 13 or older. Best of luck, Ethan, and enjoy every single minute!! ****** This weekend is Happening at The Forty, a summer classic to be sure. Elsewhere in these pages is a full review of things happening so I won’t duplicate. Whether you are hitting the Grimsby Farmers Market on Thursday afternoon, hanging out in Coronation Park taking in some tunes and enjoying a beverage, chasing kids or grandkids through the many activities or just chatting with friends and family spotted throughout the event, this event does have something for everyone. As well, Lincoln Rotary Club’s Wing Ding takes over Charles Daley Park all weekend. Another “can’t miss” event with all kinds of entertainment and great food. Lots of choices this weekend. Enjoy!!

Joann Chechalk. Chechalk noted there seems to be a niche developing for West Lincoln. â€œWe are getting a lot of requests for businesses to locate in the rural areas where services are not that necessary and the nature of the business is more land related,â€?

she said. â€œThey still need to hire people but the business is not directly agriculture.â€? Part of the plan in Smithvilleâ€™s core is adding 25 parking spaces. Much dissension overflowed among downtown merchants and the West Lincoln Cham-

ber of Commerce in the direction of township officials when many parking spaces were removed in 2015.
