Reaction to Ida’s story remarkable Reaction to the story of Ida Guarascia in last week’s edition of NewsNow was long, emotional and steady. The Beamsville women who had extensive surgery, more than 24 hours, to remove cancer from her face, has months of physical healing ahead before pro-
cedures for facial prosthetics can begin. Neither Ida, nor her husband Randy who has a degenerative back ailment, can work. Waves of calls, visits and emails flowed in with inquiries about how readers might help. “I worked with Shan Gibson at Meridian

By Stephanie Sisler NewsNow Baby Sage Knuth made quite an entrance when he was born on July 8, on his family’s Caistor Centre front lawn! Earlier that day, Jamette Mongia began experiencing contractions, but she dismissed it as early labour. She and her husband Ryan Knuth weren’t expecting the labour to progress so quickly, but baby Sage didn’t want to wait. “We were heading out to go to the hospital, but we didn’t make it out of the driveway,” explained Ryan. “She said ‘I have to get out’, and she got out the truck and told me to call the midwives.” Laying on the front lawn, she was in full labour. Ryan called the midwives, who were 40 minutes away. He called 9-1-1. “The operator asked me if I could see the baby’s head. I saw the head and dropped the phone to catch the baby,” he explained. Sage is their second child. He managed to catch the baby and got back on the phone with the 9-1-1 operator. The newborn immediately let out a healthy cry to let everyone know all was well. Ryan then ran inside their home to grab a string to tie the umbilical cord and some towels. It wasn’t long before EMS arrived and took over. “It was exciting. I was just trying to be calm for Jamette and trying to stay focused on what 9-1-1 was telling me to do,” he said. “My instincts were to make sure Jamette and the baby were okay.” Ryan had never been in any situation like this before, but said it’s amazing how much your natural instincts kick in. He described Jamette as a very holistic person, who did a great job! “I’m so proud of her,” Ryan said. Everyone was just fine. Sage was born at 38 weeks, weighing 6 lbs., 6 oz. He and Jamette are doing great and are so thankful for Ryan’s help.

Zimmerman will not run Debbie Zimmerman, current Grimsby regional councillor and a fixture on Niagara’s political scene for decades will not seek re-election. “It has been my honour to serve my community of Grimsby as it’s representative over these past three-and-a-half decades,” Ms. Zimmerman said. “It’s time to close the chapter on this part of my political career”. Zimmerman’s municipal career began in 1978 when she was elected as alderman for the Town of Grimsby. She was ap-
pointed to regional council in 1989 and served until 1997 as Grimsby’s representative. She served as regional chair from 1997-2003, and has been Grimsby’s representative at Region from 2003 through to the current term. “As regional chair I am most proud of bringing a state of the art ambulance dispatch centre to Niagara, creating the Niagara Community Foundation, and being the first community in the province to introduce Early Year’s Centres for our children,” Zimmerman said.

Think about it, when Lindsay Lohan was charged with stealing that $2,500 gold necklace from a Los Angeles jewelry store, was her father spotted at the wheel of the getaway car? No. When Lindsay assaulted another patient at the Betty Ford Clinic was her mother at her side to give the victim the mandatory

No. When Lindsay was leaving the Hookah Lounge club in Hollywood and hit the manager with her new Porsche and then left the scene of the accident, did one of her parents come by later with a bag of cash to buy the man’s silence? No. But Jeremy Bieber? Well, he would be voted Minor Hockey Father Of The Year if Justin was a hockey player instead of a one-kid, crime spree. While on their way to the Super Bowl in February in their private, chartered jet, Justin Bieber, his father and their entourage of ten people were repeatedly warned by the flight crew to stop smoking marijuana. The plane “reeked” of pot and there was so much smoke in the cockpit, the pilots put on their oxygen masks fearing they themselves would get high and later test positive for drug use. Recently, after learning Justin Bieber is a Canadian who lives in Los Angeles and has a valid U.S. work permit, 275,000 Americans signed a petition that
was presented to the White House demanding Justin Bieber be deported from the United States. Nothing came of it. However, last week here in Canada we passed a federal law making it mandatory for anyone who owns property in the United States to revoke Ca-

The Grassie church community garden is blooming and some crops are nearly ready to help feed families in need via the Grimsby Benevolent Fund. A variety of vegetables and herbs are being grown. “We want to promote healthy eating options and this is one of the ways we can do this,” said GBF executive director Stacy Elia. “For us, this partnership is wonderful and we are so thankful.” Lately, the GBF has had to purchase fresh produce and so donations such as this are a huge help.

Dykstra wins Javelin title Ray Dykstra, a Junior at the University of Kentucky and a graduate of the Grimsby High School, won the Men’s Javelin at the South East Conference (S.E.C.) Track & Field Championships on May 18. This year, his Kentucky Wildcats hosted the four-day event at their home track and field complex in Lexington, Kentucky. Dykstra gave the host school their first win in Men’s Javelin event since 1974. His winning throw of 76.45 metres (over 250 feet) was more than three metres greater than the runner-up from Auburn University. Dykstra had placed second in the S.E.C. as a Freshman and as a Sophmore. The Kentucky Men’s track & field team placed sixth overall in the conference while the Women’s team were fourth. Recently, Ray Dykstra of Grimsby placed second in the four day N.C.A.A. track & field
championships at Eugene, Oregon. The competition began on Thursday June 12 . The University of Oregon won the U.S. Collegiate championship while Dykstra’s University of Kentucky Wildcats were 7th, a team best ever, in women’s events and 15th among the men. Dykstra, the S.E.C. Javelin champion, took the silver medal in his specialty. He set a school record and a personal best throw of 76.72 metres (251’8”). Local favourite Sam Crouser of the University of Oregon, managed a throw of 76.98 metres (252’7”) on his last attempt to earn the gold medal. Then, back in his home country, Dykstra won the Javelin event at the Canadian Track & Field Championships at Moncton, NB on June 29. It was a convincing victory with a heave of 78.58 metres to win the national title by 3.19 metres or over 10 feet.

Is a political game afoot?

It seemed like last week I was West Niagara’s therapist, and I was ready to listen. I’ve mentioned before in this space that I, too, like others, think I am nuts to have taken another run at this publishing thing. The events of this week are a huge part of why I could not walk away. I look at it like this, I want more pages in my paper so I can tell more stories like Ida’s, not to make more money. So for me, whether we succeed or fail, I know I will have done the right thing. This community has been exceedingly nice to me over the years and I try to pay that back every day. Just the way a fellow named Eric is doing. Eric called me last Friday afternoon. He was at a coffee shop in town reading NewsNow as he waited for his wife, Annette, to finish up a visit with her mom in
an area nursing home. “How can I help?’ Eric asked. After explaining I was working with Meridian Credit Union to get an account set up to which Ida would have access for dayto-day expenses, he asked again, “what is their need? How can I help?” I further explained the need is two-fold: shortterm living expenses and the very expensive prosthetic procedures coming up in the fall, which could be as much as $8,000. Long pause. “Well, how would it be if, when she gets the prosthetics completed, just send me the bill?” Eric says, who added he is not a rich man, but life has been good to him. Loooooonger pause. “Are you there?” he asked after a couple of minutes. I got out a “yep”, but could not make another sound: beyond speechless. I connected Ida and Eric via email. They will meet soon. Just as a kicker, Eric sent me an email late Friday night which read, “Just mentioned this to my wife. Tell them that when everything is done, they will also receive an all inclusive trip to Mexico as a celebration.” What do you say at that point? Remarkable. A spectacular end to a crushingly emotional week. So how do you bounce back from that editorial wise. Well, in the ongoing drama that the newspaper game is, let’s come back with the baby-born-onthe-front-lawn piece. Nobody will see that coming....we sure didn’t. Just another week here are NewsNow.

Garden Club tour a huge success Dear Editor, The Grimsby Garden Club 50th Anniversary Garden Tour was a huge success!
