East Grimsby medical grow op gets green light Mike Williscraft NewsNow A medical marijuana facility proposed for Grimsby’s east end got a green light from the Town’s Committee of Adjustment on Friday. The proposal, approved at an emergency meeting of the CofA
committee, would see the former Freeman Herbs location at 378 South Service Rd. be converted to the grow facility. In reviewing the information, committee chair Kevin Antonides said staff approved the minor variance sought.
That variance, “to allow a medical marijuana facility to be located 80 metres from the lot line of any residential zone...” was the heart of the matter. “It really depends what you consider minor,” said Antonides. Grimsby’s bylaw on
the matter, passed in 2014, stipulates a setback of 150 metres. It was noted that was the high end of the range researched from across Ontario: 70-150 metres. While the setback issue is one component, the one that has the

Beamsville rower showcases talent on world stage By Mike Williscraft NewsNow From the first time he was on the water, Beamsville’s Alex Jastremski knew he had found a new passion in rowing. “There is a nice atmosphere being out on the water and because it is so time consuming, you become very close to your teammates. There is a sense of brotherhood and camaraderie in the sport that I have seldom found elsewhere,” says Jastremski, 18. “My family suggested that I join the local Learn to Row Program in Grade 7 and I liked it a lot. I joined my high school rowing team in Grade 9 at Blessed Trinity and continued to row at E.L. Crossley and South Niagara rowing
club. Since it is a sport based on time, I really enjoyed being able to clearly see my progress and became addicted to improving it.” Countless hours of dryland and on-thewater training as well as a great showing at the team selection process in London, ON, have netted Jastremski a coveted spot on Canada’s World Rowing Junior Championship to be held Aug. 8-12 in the Czech Republic. He was on the bubble in 2017 and knows all too well what it feels like to be a last-minute cut and he was determined to get to the next level this year. “I was very eager for the spot. Last year, I was cut at the final stage of the selection process, so I was extremely motivat-

determined by the training they do leading up to the day of competition, and I knew I had put in enough training to set myself up for success. That said, you never know who can come out of left field when selection begins, and everyone I raced against during selection had a lot of talent as oarsmen. I am very fortunate to be in such good company, as a competitive environment only breeds more talent.” A quick look at his rowing resume shows he delivered on all fronts: • 1st – 2018 CSSRA Canadian National High School Rowing Championships : Senior Men’s Eight • 1st – 2018 CSSRA Canadian National High
School Rowing Championships : Senior Men’s Single • 1st – 2018 Stotesbury Cup Regatta : Senior Boys Double • 1st – at the world renowned 53rd Head of the Charles Regatta : Men’s Youth Fours (2seat) - New Course Record - 16:12.8 breaking a record that stood for 24 years). • 2017 Canadian Junior National Team Member which went to the CanAmMex Games in Victoria, BC and won gold in the Men’s quad and Men’s double. “I am extremely excited to represent my Canada on the world stage. The competition is completely unlike anything I have been exposed to prior, and I am eager to accept the challenge the best
oarsmen in the world present to me,” says Jastremski. “Everyone at worlds has been training day in, day out, 35km a day, so everyone is going to be hungry for a medal. This is a tremendous step for me as an athlete personally, and I hope I can continue to represent Canada in future success. I am very grateful to have this opportunity, and I owe it all to Rowing Canada, my teammates from school and the Jr team, my competitors who made me stronger, my parents, and my coach John Ruscitti.” Despite representing Canada, all athletes must pay their own $4,000 costs. Now, the agenda won’t come out until Friday, but it was said in June that Grimsby hydro officials will attend council in July to provide the first real update since last July - funny how these reports come up in the month residents are paying the least amount of attention, eh? Who could forget Episode 1 last year and the legendary performance of Grimsby Energy chair Shafee Bacchus who stole the spotlight by telling the public the tab for the biodigester had left $10 million in its rearview mirror. A whole slew of reasons for that was unleashed for the project which was nearly two years overdue at that point. They don’t make stories like that anymore... at least I hope they don’t. Grimsby just cannot afford them. Now, the Sobie Road facility has been operating since Fall 2017. It would be interesting to know what the true performance of the facility has been – one which includes the capacity limitations the feeder stock system has – and what is projected as revenue as hydro officials try to figure out a way to get this thing somehow sustainable. So I’m pumped for that show, but I am not even sure if it will come. It was said to be planned, but who knows. Now it looks as though we might get a double feature on Monday. The minutes from a hastily
MIKE WILLISCRAFT called Committee of Adjustment meeting on Friday, July 6 will come forward. This has all the earmarks of a rerun following the “we can’t do anything about it” plot line. There is something to be said for that and items like a medical marijuana grow facility do have a life of their own these days, BUT, just like with truck traffic on Mountain Street or being proactive on heritage files, there is a series of things that can be done. It just takes political will and interest to get things done. Clearly, there was not a lot of political will happening Friday. A grow op behind the YMCA and close to a large neighbourhood should have Town officials being extra particular on crossing T’s and dotting I’s, but that does not seem to be the case to this point. Dorothy Bothwell, a council hawk without parallel, noted several issues to me when I asked her about the process on this caper. Among the issues: • The July 3 initial application was deferred to provide a survey to establish the distance from the YMCA – a public facility and daycare. The owners seemed unaware the Y was in their “backyard” and no mention was made
of it in the Planning Report provided to COA. • No new survey was provided at the July 6 as requested by motion at the July 3 meeting. This is odd since council held up a huge condo development out on Winston Road in part because they wanted a new survey done to account for a few square metres. Sometimes they want a survey, sometimes they don’t. • “At the July 6 meeting (last minute, 4 pm on a Friday - - they never hold meetings on Fridays) the Chair proceeded to reread the motion and go directly to a vote.” Several issues there...4 p.m. on a Friday in July, come on, people! Give your heads a shake. If you cared, at all, about public interest and input, that kind of scheduling would NEVER happen. Regardless of the importance. I wish this kind of thing was more rare, but in the last couple of terms such disregard has become commonplace. • Adam Mottershead, who has come to be recognized as an expert witness on key planning issues was told he had 30 seconds for his presentation while 10 minutes is the Town’s protocol. There was a bunch more, but I will call it there. Simply, the Town could have gone the extra step to communicate to the public what was happening both with the application and the process – even if they cling to the belief nothing can be done – and every courtesy should have been given to the 8-10 residents who did find out about the Friday meeting and attended.
