• The school building is owned by the DSBN, not the Town, so council has little say about its future; • Lincoln’s Heritage Committee and Friends of VPS are two different entities. “The Friends do not represent the Heritage Committee nor speak for them,” said MacMillan, and; • Lincoln and Niagara-on-the-Lake comparisons to their Parliament Oak (PA) situation are unfounded. PA has nothing to do with heritage. The entire council agreed there were flaws in the process, something they heard repeatedly from proponents of preserving the building. The communication infrastructure of the town, where heritage matters are concerned with now see a complete overhaul as a result. “We had solid discussion of the issue and we made the
right decision,” said Coun. Rob Foster. “But from a communication viewpoint, we failed.” In structuring its committees, one new post was given to MacMillan. He is now the Town’s liaison for heritage groups. “It is an informal but important communication link,” said Mayor Sandra Easton. Earlier, Easton had noted, “Council is responsible to uphold the decisions of past councils. There is no grounds to reverse any of the decisions. It is now time to move on.” Coun. Dianne Rintjema agreed. “There has been a lot of misinformation but it is time to look to the future and ensure our practices are something we can be happy with and that they take into account the public interest,” Rintjema said.

“Aggressive” course set by Lincoln council Calling its plan “agressive”, new Lincoln Deputy Mayor Rob Foster said council’s committee and responsibilty restructuring is a direct response to input from voters during the election run. “This is clearly focusing on what we heard at the doorway,” said Foster. Among the key changes in committee structure is the renaming of the Planning Committee. It will now be the Planning and Economic Development Committee. It will be chaired by Foster. Customer service, communications and economic
development will all be major areas of focus for the next term of council, he said. Coun. Dave Thompson added that all the points included council’s plan, which also included culture and road improvements, is part of a ‘one town” theme. “It is a great road map. We are off in the right direction,” said Coun. Wayne MacMillan. Coun. JD Pachereva noted council “fell down”in a couple of areas in the last term relating to communication, but new processes should take care of these potential issues moving forward.
“The road rehabilitation and snow plan are two examples,” Pachereva said, adding, “We need to let the public know not just what we are doing, but why.” CAO Anne Louise Heron said the change in direction is significant. “It is a turn in the road. Last term we did major work on bridges and sewer infrastructure,” Heron said. “We’re moving from a hardcore infrastructure agenda to a more customer service and communication oriented plan. Staff are excited about it.”
Operation Multi-task: Police step up enforcement Drivers who continue to speed, drive impaired, drive while distracted, fail to follow the rules of road, and refuse to clear snow from their vehicles need to change their habits as members of the Niagara Regional Police step up en-
forcement. On Wednesday morning, the NRP announced Operation Multi-task, a three-month road safety operation, will have officers deployed in marked and unmarked cars and will be issuing provincial offence
notices to those drivers who put others at risk by engaging in these high risk activities, according to a media release. The initiative is part of a campaign to make roads safer through education and enforcement.

Chilly fundraiser brings in $3,000 for McNally House By Katherine Grant NewsNow Dipping one’s scantily clad body into freezing cold water
after clambering down an icecovered, rocky shoreline while being buffeted by a chill wind is not everyone’s idea of what to do on the first day of the new year. Yet once again this year, led by organizer David Munford, 80 brave souls did just that for the 8th annual Grimsby Polar Bear Dip and helped to raise $3,000 for McNally House hospice. They came dressed in costumes and capes, top hats and tails, and each made the brave walk into the Lake Ontario waves at the foot of Bal Harbour Road. “There is no rational way to explain it, except for maybe bragging rights,� says Munford of the appeal of the Polar Bear Dip. Since its inception, the local dip has raised more than $20,000 for the hospice. This year the Grimsby Fire Department volunteered to be on stand by in case a participant experienced distress. “They volunteered which was awesome,� said Munford. “Thankfully we have never had a problem.� As for the dip itself, purists say it doesn’t count unless you go under the water. “I go under every year. My
wife went in up to her waist and said that still counts and I am not going to argue with her!�

Hot delicious soup for cold days By Nancy Morgan For NewsNow A hearty bowl of soup is the very thing on a cold winter’s night to warm everyone up. BEST BEAN SOUP • 1 lb Italian sausage • 2 cups diced ham • 3 medium potatoes, peeled & cubed • 2 medium onions, diced • 3 stalks celery with leaves, chopped • 5 carrots, peeled & diced • 1 cup chopped fresh parsley or 2 tbsp dried • 3-14 oz cans of beans (kidney, cannellini & navy or your favorites) • 14 oz can tomato sauce • 28 oz canned diced tomatoes • 1-2 tsp salt • 1 tsp pepper • 2 bay leaves • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
• 2 crushed garlic cloves Directions Cut sausage into bite size pieces. In large Dutch oven brown sausage and ham. Drain fat. Add rest of ingredients and enough water to cover. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook for 2-3 hours. Makes 8-10 servings. This can be made in a crock pot as well, just brown meat and combine everything, cook on high for 6-8 hours. HEARTY TORTELLINI & SPINACH SOUP (Easy and satisfying) • 1 tbsp butter • 6 cloves garlic, chopped (yes, 6) • 4 cups chicken broth

• 6 oz frozen or fresh cheese tortellini • 28 oz can diced tomatoes • 10 oz bag spinach, stems removed • 8-10 fresh basil leaves, coarsely chopped • Parmesan cheese, grated Directions Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté 2-3 minutes. Add broth and bring to a boil. Add tortellini and cook halfway (about 5 mins if using frozen, less if using fresh). Add tomatoes with liquid, reduce heat to simmer and cook just until pasta is tender. Stir in spinach and basil and cook another 2 minutes until wilted. Serve hot. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Makes 4 servings but can be easily doubled.

Shipwreck
The 132.21 metre long British bulk carrier Cydonia was launched on July 21, 1955, but the Stag Line waited for seven years before sending it to the Great Lakes. It came inland through the Seaway on two occasions in 1962 and returned annually for several years. When the
vessel was sold on Aug 29, 1969, it was the last steam-powered ship in the historic Stag Line fleet. The freighter was back through the Seaway as Vermont I in 1969 and, while inland in 1970, ran aground in the Detroit River due to strong winds on Nov. 22, 1970.
By 1977, the vessel was sailing under its fifth name of Joy. It was under tow on June 8, 1977, due to rudder damage, while about 160 Km southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River when a fire broke out in the engine room. This was followed by three explosions that sent the Joy to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

Deserved recognition Sometimes this space is a simple, concise editorial opinion. Not this week. This week, it is an homage to a fellow who would never say a word, never step into the limelight (just the opposite, actually) and has always been as much a politician (in a good way) as any elected official. Having spent a decade with Bryan Macaulay on Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area Board and having had a great many dealings with him over the years, it was super to see the Welcome Wagon ladies recognize him for this three decades in business with Village Studio. These days, two years is an eternity, and that is when people aren’t giving back to the community in any number of ways. Great guy, skilled photographer, solid community member. Congrats on new course, Lincoln Town of Lincoln is taking some bold steps, steps they hope will lead to a future of economic prosperity and harmony. There was a lot of optimism flying around the room Monday night at Lincoln’s regular council meeting. New process and contacts have been established for dealing with heritage matters – much needed in the wake of the Vineland Public School building issue – but there is an intense focus on responding and driving home results which materialized directly from what candidates heard at the door during October’s election campaign. It was refreshing to hear elected officials essentially fall on their respective swords at the meeting. Councillors admitted the Town’s processes had serious shortcomings. These issues resulted in less than desired results or flat out errors, particularly in the area of communication, as noted by several councillors. Elected officials will often stick to the shadows, preferring shades of grey when it comes to defending either their own actions or those of the municipality. There was none of that Monday night. Rather, there were several fronts – the VPS issue, less-than-optimal road improvements and snow removal process were named aloud. Coun. Dave Thompson said after the meeting it is a five-headed monster
MIKE WILLISCRAFT which council plans to attack in the upcoming term. Those key areas are: culture, road improvements, communication, customer service and....the biggy, economic development. For those who don’t pay an ounce of attention to the goings on of their local council, which is a surprisingly high number given the impact this small group of elected officials has on their municipality, it may not seem like a big deal to see the name of a committee change. The fact is, it rarely happens. It is even more rare for an entire unit of a council to not only recognize a bad situation but see the need for change and all fall in line with a common, well-reasoned plan for rectifying the issues at hand. Several councillors pointed with considerable favour to new Mayor Sandra Easton for this new direction and leadership. A “breath of fresh air” was a term used. And that, too, was great to see as one councillor noted the mayor got off to a bit of a “rocky start” but the whole team, and staff,
is extremely supportive of what has transpired in a very short amount of time, really. And while there was a lot of serious business discussed at Monday’s meeting it was not without its comic relief. Enter Coun. JD Pachereva. Now, I was always told by my compatriots at provincial and national newspaper board meetings I was the best “in the room” guy they had seen in years. if there was a discussion to hold, an opinion to be made, a case to be sold, they wanted me in there. I really do have to step aside from that title after seeing the glorious sell-job Coun. Pachereva gave rookie Coun. Paul MacPherson regarding the council representative position on Beamsville’s Business Improvement Area board. Olivier, Brando, Sandler come to mind....If you didn’t see it, check the Cogeco replay. If you don’t have Cogeco, get it. It would be worth it. This in no way should besmirch the efforts of those few people who have attempted to make the BIA go over the years, but if you asked merchants now, few would know who was even on the board anymore. It needs help, and Coun. MacPherson will be an asset, for sure. I poke fun, yes, and it was fun. Best of luck, Lincoln Council on your new course.

S oul Escapes ...take some time to breathe Grimsby’s newest for local events & GatherinGs Leslie started attending “spirit night” events when her children were young. She loved the break it gave her to be an adult and also loved the gathering of minds and like-minded souls. Eventually she began holding these events herself once per month. They studied a new topic each time…. handwriting analysis, self-hypnotism, scrying, tarot, feng shui & discovery boards. In her career as a risk analyst and programmer she had the opportunity to public speak on a variety of data related topics. She was also very active in the community, facilitating the Hamilton Corporate Challenge, organizing fundraising walks and teaching Junior Achievement courses. Leslie always managed to pursue her passion for workshops. She left the corporate world two years ago and is now living her dream. She is studying small business management at Niagara College via the Ontario Self Employment Benefit Program and has started Soul Escapes here in Grimsby. The Soul Escapes vision is to partner with local establishments and local experts to facilitate events such as art classes, sculpture, pottery, cooking classes, yoga, tea tasting, tarot, meditation, wood carving, drum making, drum circles, tai chi, vision boards, etc. in beautiful settings. Leslie says, “there are many bed and breakfasts, historical properties and local businesses that have common areas perfect for workshops”. The business is centered in Grimsby and Beamsville to provide local entertainment and enrichment for West Niagara residents. All are welcome of course! The first event is Friday January 16th at the Elizabeth Street Pumphouse. The topic is Western Feng Shui, the art of placement in the home to promote energy movement.
