Johnston ready to take cancer battle to Mexico Jennifer Johnston will be taking her race to beat cancer on the road to Mexico. Her battle started six years ago when a sand-boarding accident in Australia led to doctors finding she had a form of skin cancer. A spot over her eyebrow she had had since her youth was cut open and
would not heal. The tumor earned the nickname “Norbert”, said Johnston, who co-owns Grimsby Runners along with husband. Doug Flis. To date, her road has included: • four surgeries, • 20 rounds of radiation, and; • many biopsies. Despite the treatments, the cancer
remained persistent. Her case is complex to the point where even Roswell Park’s clinic in Buffalo refused treatment. Johnston said another noted U.S. facility, the Sloan Kettering and Mayo Clinic would “take a look” for a mere $250,000 US.

Town of Lincoln officials have been notified of residents having a door-to-door salesman conducting water tests in people’s homes which “do not represent the quality of the Town’s drinking water.” As a result, Adam Allcock, Lincoln’s manager of water and waste water, said residents should “be cautious of a possible drinking water scam making the rounds in the community”. Post-Walkerton water tragedy in 2000, Ontario’s municipalities have had to conduct regular water quality tests and Lincoln is not immune. “The Town of Lincoln conducts regular weekly water sampling and testing throughout the municipality. The test results are available for public information on the Town of Lincoln website and also the Niagara Region website,” noted Allcock in a press release. Homeowners are being contacted by a door-to-door salesman making false claims about drinking water quality and the need for mandatory in home-filtration systems. “These tests and inspections conducted by salespeople are misleading and the results do not represent the quality of the Town’s drinking water,” said Allcock. He noted: • If required to do any home entries, Town of Lincoln staff must be in Town vehicles wearing proper Town of Lincoln uniforms and identification. • Drinking water is produced at the Niagara Region water treatment facilities and supplied to homes by the Town of Lincoln. With her Ontario health system options exhausted, Johnston has been accepted at Gerson Clinic in Mexico - starting Jan. 25 - which does juicing every hour on the hour, for 12 hours, and five coffee enemas per day throughout a two-week period. The system detoxi-
fies the body to help it heal itself. A twoweek stay at Gerson will cost roughly $20,000 U.S., plus travel. When Johnston will be limited upon her return, she said, not being able to work or run and having to follow a strict diet. As
well, she will need ongoing vitamin treatments for about a year at a cost of about $2,500 per month. To generate the funds needed for the treatments, the couple has started selling their possessions and created a GoFundMe page. Asking for help

Team Sweden packs Fleming Centre Lincoln hospitality was on display as well as the hockey talent of Team Sweden’s U18 Women’s hockey squad Monday night at the Fleming Centre. The result of their exhibition game on the ice was a 4-3 win over Stoney Creek Sabres Intermediate AA Team, but the real winner were the area resident who had a chance to see some world class players in their own back yard, says Lori Laird, Lincoln’s coordinator of recreation services. “It was an exciting game in front of a big crowd with lots of donations made to Community Care of West Niagara,” said Laird, noting CCWN was the beneficiary of donations at the game. The U18 World Championship starts next Tuesday at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.

Genealogy 101 at Archives Have you ever wondered about your ancestors? Who they were, where they lived, what they worked at, how they got here, why they came? Volunteers at Grimsby Historical Society Archives are prepared to help you solve those mysteries from the past. Starting on Jan. 30, 10 a.m.-noon, a series of three genealogy workshops is being planned. The first one is called How To Get Started, and is designed for those who are just beginning their quest, or who have not even gone beyond wishing for answers. Niagara Region Wind Project (the “Project”) Within the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet and the Town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario Haldimand County and Niagara Region, the 11th of January 2016.
Niagara Region Wind Corporation, now FWRN LP (the “Proponent”), are engaging in a renewable energy project for which a Renewable Energy Approval (“REA”) was issued by the Ministry of the Environment (now the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) on November 21, 2014. Project Description The Project is located within the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet and the Town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario. The Project will consist of 77 wind turbine generators, step-up transformer, electrical collector lines, a transmission line, two transformer substations, turbine access roads and construction staging areas. The Project will have a total maximum nameplate capacity of up to 230 MW.
Underground Transmission Line – Road Closure Vault and duct bank installations, along with underground trenching will begin on Mountainview Road starting Jan. 11th, 2016. The road closure would be from: Jan. 11th to 16th. Detours for this road closure are: South Service Road to Lincoln Avenue to Greenlane (see diagram above). Please note that public services (i.e. mail delivery, garbage pick-up, school buses, etc.) may be disrupted during this time.

Clarke, Violet (Vi) Lillian
On Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at the age of 77, Vi peacefully passed away after a brief illness at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital with her loving family surrounding her. Predeceased by her husband, Norm Clarke, in 1976 she is survived, and sorely missed by, her friend and partner, Albert, her children, Larry (Linda), Violet (Ron), Norm, Valerie (Stan) and Lois (Chris), and by 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. She was lovingly devoted to her family who always came first. For many years she enjoyed the bowling league at Grand Lanes in Grimsby, she was an avid reader and couldn’t resist a crossword puzzle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Cremation has taken place and visitation will be at the Tallman Funeral Home – 4998 King St., Beamsville on Saturday, January 9, 2015 from 2 – 4 p.m. followed by a private Celebration of Life.

Cole passed away peacefully on December 31, 2015. He was born November 21, 1925. He leaves behind his wife Jane (Hogewoning) and daughter Robynne. He is predeceased by two sons, Randy (1996) and Robert (1970), his first wife Myrtle Murdoch (1978) and brother Douglas (1952). He leaves behind two sisters Barbara Geddes (Russell 2000) and Katharine Underhill (Albert 2015) as well as many nieces and nephews. For more than 50 years Hugh owned and enjoyed success in the operation of his heavy construction business, performing numerous projects throughout the Niagara area and beyond. The family will receive friends at the Vineland Chapel of the Tallman Funeral Homes, 3277 King St, on Sunday, January 3, 2016 from 2 - 5 pm and again on Monday from 10 a.m. until the start of the service at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will take place. Planning a healthy future: HHS CEO Dear Editor, There’s an old saying that suggests the reason we have two ears and one mouth is so we can do more listening than talking. Although it’s meant to apply to a person and not an organization, this wise comment sums up the past year at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS). Almost one year ago we began planning for the future – creating a vision of the care HHS will provide in five, 10 and even 20 years. This project is called Our Healthy Future and it began, literally, with listening. Last spring, hospital leaders and board members attended 10 listening sessions, including two in West Niagara, where we invited the community to tell us what they value most in healthcare. Our goal is to
Letter improve the patient experience by organizing our services around what people value and need. The five broad themes that arose from those sessions were quality, advocacy, the importance of including family and caregivers, navigating the system and feeling respected. These themes have become a touchstone for HHS as we make our way through the planning process. Our long-term clinical vision must reflect and respond to these five themes and in the short term, we can act on the ideas shared to improve the patient experience. Throughout the summer and early fall, staff and physicians worked in groups on specific clinical services – cancer care, com-
munity care, surgery, regional specialty programs, women’s and children’s health. The working groups also studied demographic data that informs service needs as we considered future directions. We kept our ears open in the fall when focus groups were held with people who use our hospital services and with community partners. These sessions provided an opportunity to dive deeper into the earlier feedback we received. The people who had received care at HHS gave us insights into the patient experience and our community partners provided thoughtful advice about how we can collaborate further. Focus groups will continue this winter. Planning Our Healthy Future together is an opportunity for HHS,
the people we serve and our partners to listen and learn from each other. I’d like the community to know that listening and keeping an open mind are fundamentally important in our care for patients and their families. We look forward to demonstrating that commitment to the communities we serve. You can continue to share your perspectives with us at www. ourhealthyfuture.ca, or attend an upcoming information session at WLMH or participate in a larger community session taking place this winter. A chance to help a helper When I say Doug Flis and Jennifer Johnston are “part of the furniture” in Grimsby, it is with the utmost respect. The duo have been known to many as two of the most active people - in more ways than one - since their shop, Grimsby Runners was opened. Today, Jen has her own battle and is getting active in a whole new way as she takes on a rare and complex cancer. For folks who could always be counted on for help, now is the community’s chance to help right back. A fundraiser, Norbert’s Farewell Fiesta, set for Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Peach King Centre in Grimsby, will help pay for treatments, her only hope. Tickets are $20. Please consider attending. Looking ahead to a bright 2016 Bit of a mixed bag this week to blow out some of the holiday cobwebs...it may take a while! ******* Town of Lincoln will host its New Year’s Levee this Saturday, Jan. 9, from 2-4 p.m. at Town Hall. There are a lot of things going on in the area, some are serious issues like the sludge facility and the escarpment crossing plans; some involve heritage like the Jordan Museum project; there is the downtown redevelopment projects, and on and on. These events are a great chance to socialize and visit, but they are also a chance to speak to your councillor and the mayor about anything you choose. Similarly, the next day, MPP Tim Hudak hosts his annual event at Vineland Estates in the carriage house from 3-5 p.m. There is certainly no shortage of issues on the provincial front these days, either, so having a stationary target at which to aim one’s concerns is a good thing. ****** A little shout out the nice people at Ming’s Garden in Vineland! For those who do not know the place, it is the little hole-in-the-wall Chinese food restaurant parked on Victoria Avenue at the South Service Road. We had planned for weeks to get Chinese food for dinner on New Year’s Eve but, being eyeball deep in deadlines and delivering printed matter right up until mid-afternoon that day, not enough
MIKE WILLISCRAFT forethought was given. When I started calling to place an order for that night, every place I knew was either closed or were not taking any more orders. Now that location has had many incarnations going back long before Chris Baradinskas had that awesome burger place in there more than a decade ago and I have been in every version at one point or another. While we did go on this occasion by process of elimination, I’ve got to say anyone would be hard pressed to find better quality for the price. Variety, fresh, it was really good...and I recommend the homemade spring rolls. ****** We have our Then & Now feature in our tidy little 16-pager this week and I ask you, good reader, to please take your time and peruse the lengthy list. These folks represented in that feature are an excellent cross-section of the people who do soooo much for the community: most never seek a word of recognition, but simply do
things, donate things, give their time, every week of the year. Don’t get me wrong, there are others not there who are excellent supporters of the community. My point is, our business community is worthy of your support as a consumer. What goes around comes around, both dollars and karma. I am not a proponent of pushing a blanket “shop locally” edict. If local shops don’t offer what a consumer seeks, sure, no option but to go elsewhere. Some people just don’t like or may have had service issues with a local shop. If that is the case, head off down the road. I would, too. But only after I have given a local merchant the opportunity to either earn my business or work to win it back. I know I appreciate that opportunity. It’s not like mistakes don’t happen. We never want them and no merchant does either. The worst thing that can happen is to never know because a complaint is not lodged. If each household made a point to buy one item locally they might normally head out of town for this year – in the entire year that would be hundreds of thousands of dollars floating around our communities in many great ways. Those dollars pay wages, which keeps local families healthy, and create the availability to power all the community donations every group, team and service club needs.

Rose Cottage launches new program this month Rose Cottage Visiting Volunteers officially launches its new community drop-in program thi month - in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society of Niagara and Mountainview Christian Reformed Church. For the past few months Rose Cottage has been developing the new program - “Brain Wave Café.” A grant received by the Niagara Community Foundation in 2015 made it possible for Rose Cottage to partner with like-minded community groups to host signature programs, such as the
one offered by the Alzheimer’s Society at a local landmark such as the Mountainview Christian Reformed Church. The soft launch began in November 2015, with attendance ranging from 18- to 40-plus people per session. The program is offered twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Participants are able to drop in any time from 1:30-3 pm, and are welcome to pick up information or stay for the duration of the session. Notice of Public Information Centre No. 3 Niagara Escarpment Crossing Study Master Plan The Study The Region of Niagara has re-opened a Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) to evaluate truck route alternatives across the Niagara Escarpment. The purpose of this study is to review the Class EA completed in 1997 for a new or improved escarpment crossing of the area to accommodate commercial traffic, while minimizing negative impacts to residents and motorists. The project team used the existing data from the 1997 study and updated it where necessary to complete an identification and screening of the planning alternatives, followed by the development of design concepts for the preferred alternative. The Process The study was initiated as a Schedule ‘C’ project in accordance with the Municipal Class EA document (October 2000, as amended in 2011). As a result of input received from the agencies, stakeholders and the public, the project team found that no single solution will fully address the problem statement. Based on this finding, the Regional Public Works Committee approved a revised Terms of Reference that provides for a Master Plan approach to complete Phases 1 and 2 of the study. This approach includes the identification of short, medium and long-term projects to address the original problem statement. At the conclusion of the study, the EA process will be documented in a Transportation Study Report. Schedule A and A+ projects will proceed to implementation and more detailed work will be completed for Schedule ‘B’ and ‘C’ projects. Public Information Centre #3 Public consultation is a key component of this study. The purpose of the PIC is to provide an update on the study, including a revised list of short, medium and long-term recommendations and improvements, as a result of additional information and review.
