Grimsby variety store open for business Bank machine taken in major police raid not connected to local store, warrant shows By Mike Williscraft NewsNow When multiple law enforcement agencies showed up at his door last month, Milk & Things manager Hector Reda was surprised. Police from Montreal and Niagara, who worked with border security and Hamilton departments, were at the Main Street location to confiscate a bank machine which was part of a larger network connected with a major shisha bust executed at 23 locations in Canada and the U.S.
The investigation of the network related to tax evasion. Shisha is not an illegal substance. Reda’s store, Milk & Things, had no connection to the criminal investigation and the “Warrant To Search” provided by the police shows, simply, the ATM was the only item to be removed. “The store had nothing to do with the investigation. We don’t sell that stuff (shisha) and never did. I just want to make that clear,” Reda confirmed. He noted that the See STORE, Page 2

a little bit longer because they had to get (a tool) to cut a bolt which held the bank machine in place.” With 25 years in business in Grimsby, Reda said he has a lot of customers and he wants them to know all is well. “It is business as usual. All that is between the government and a bank, nothing to do with me,” he said.
“We didn’t even do anything with the money inside the machine. No substitute for working smoke alarms in saving lives: Chief Cain Grimsby Fire Chief Mike Cain has a New Years resolution and he would like it to be everyone’s as well. Make sure smoke alarms are installed and working in your home or business. “Fire deaths need to stop! Everyone needs to understand that emergency response is a reactive measure only. Stopping fire before it starts is the best fire protection money can buy,” he stressed. “Have working smoke alarms and carbon
monoxide alarms with a home escape plan is the only way to ensure your family is safe.” In September 2016, Cain noted having a working smoke alarm at on Ontario Street home in Grimsby was an excellent example of lives saved. The home sustained $500,000 in damage but all residents got out safely after being awoken by their smoke alarm. “There simply is no way around it. Smoke alarms can save you,” said Cain.

Grimsby teen to Italy with select soccer squad If Owen Clavel is to realize his dream of playing for Team Canada’s soccer squad one day, he is taking a major step toward that goal this week. The 14-year-old, who got his start with Grimsby Town Youth Soccer Club at the age of six, is currently in Rome, Italy as part of the Canadian Academy of Futbol - United Canadian Select team. The team is playing in a tournament from Jan. 3-7. Upon his return he will head to Coastal Carolina University in Coastal, South Carolina for a soccer camp. Despite his youth, Clavel has covered some ground playing for Lincoln Storm, Chantilly Forever FC Academy in Hamilton for two years and plays at his high school’s after-school encore program at DSBN Academy in St. Catharines. Chantilly was invited into the CAF super group and finished its first season in the U-14 division in the middle of
the pack, which was a great showing for a first-year team. Before dedicating to soccer, Clavel played with Grimsby Minor Hockey for
three years but gave it up in order to follow his soccer dream. To prepare for the tournament, Clavel has been attending practices all
over the GTA and Brampton. He returns Jan. 9. “I am thankful for
the opportunity. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thanks to my coaches of
the past for moulding me into the player I am today,” said Clavel.

SALMON PATTIES with TOMATO RELISH INGREDIENTS •2 lge tomatoes seeded and diced • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil • 2 shallots finely chopped plus 1 shallot, halved • 2 tsp lemon juice • 2 tsp olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 lb salmon fillet, skinned and cut into small pieces •2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley • 1 tsp grated lemon zest

DIRECTIONS To make relish: combine tomatoes, basil, chopped shallots, lemon juice, oil, salt and pepper in a small serving bowl. Allow to sit to blend flavors while preparing salmon. Combine chopped salmon, parsley, the shallot halves, salt and pepper to taste, lemon zest in a food processor and pulse until mixture is finely chopped. With damp hands, form into four 4” thick patties. Spray a large non-stick pan with
cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add patties and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes each side. Serve with relish. Makes 4 servings. 1 serving = 214 cal, 9g total fat, 2g sat fat. Two dead in multi-car accident on Woolverton
Two men were killed Friday just after 12 noon in a three-vehicle accident on Woolverton Road at Kemp Road in Grimsby. Initial investigation revealed that a 44-year-old male resident of Grimsby was driving a 2015 Hyundai Veloster southbound on Woolverton Road when he collided with the side of a northbound 2003 GMC cargo

van being driven by a 51-year-old Grimsby male. The Hyundai then crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound 2016 Dodge Caravan that was being driven by a 62-year-old male from Hamilton. The driver of the Hyundai suffered fatal injuries in this collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge suf-
fered life-threatening injuries and was transported to an-out-of-region hospital where he succumb to his injuries. The driver of the GMC was uninjured in this collision. Editor, from local council members: writer Dear under They lack the trust Mr. Williscraft end- ganization, Dear Editor, Grimsby residents: did you know that the District School Board of Niagara plans on closing all three high schools in Grimsby, Beamsville, and South Lincoln? The Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) is already almost finished, and its final decision will be made by March. Two of the three very under-advertised, very underpublicized public meetings are already over, without most of us even knowing about them. For those of you who are just hearing about this now, the basic concept is that enrollment is currently down at GSS, BDSS, and South Lincoln, so staff recommended closing all three schools and open one super-school in an undetermined location somewhere between the three towns. The ARC planned
three public events to receive input from the communities and the taxpayers, but Smithville (November) and Beamsville (December) are both already done and only one meeting is left in Grimsby on Jan. 26 at 6 pm. The Smithville and Beamsville public reviews were both very under-publicized. Did you even know they were happening? No? You’re not alone. Many people were unaware, and they were both very under-attended by the public. The school board didn’t even allow public questions/comments until after 8:30 pm at BDSS, so they did not receive much input. It seems like the decision has already been made and they are just going through the motions. The three high schools will all be closed by June of 2020 before the GO
train even gets here. My question is why have we not been better informed? Schools are an essential part of any community. Where are our representatives at the Town Council? Probably meeting with developers deciding how many condos they can fit on the football fields when the schools are knocked down, or meeting with the province begging desperately to let them develop more of the tender fruit lands in Grimsby. Where is our elected town council? Where is our mayor? Why aren’t they focusing on what is important to the core of the town instead of focusing on what is important to developers? An election year is coming in 2018 and I think it’s time to look at who has done what in our town, or NOT done. David Sharpe Grimsby

Grimsby council made very questionable decisions so why not turn things around for a change and take a stand for their own residents - who also contribute lots of money to the NPCA - and demand an audit. MIKE WILLISCRAFT for a first-class independent newspaper publisher in Henry Burgoyne. Wow, times have changed. Looking back at issues from this time last year I noted two things I wanted to accomplish in 2016 - a revamped web presence and paying more attention to myself. As usual, work won out and consumed much of my year but I did get around to putting several digital irons in the fire. That’s all well and good but I really don’t want to wait until my doctor says, “Mike, you’ve to do X”, or “you’ve got to do Y.” So, by the time you read this, I will have been to the gym twice this week and I have committed to go a minimum of four times a week for 90 minutes. I have a oneyear plan, but who is kidding who? I am starting with a tight focus on eating and exercise for two weeks. I have done this regimen for long stretches, up to six months, in the past, so it can be done. For me, work usually blows things up and a time demand arises which necessitates a
gym appointment being missed. For that reason, I have planned to fit two sessions in during the daytime when I have no appointments set. This should allow flexibility on weekends and evenings. I note all this because I hate letting people down, can’t stand it, in fact. It is one of my true strengths and, perhaps, my greatest weakness at the same time. If you call with a story idea, a photo op, you see something happening in town and want me to get there...that kind of thing...I may not call back until the next day, or may not be able to make it at all. This is some shortterm pain for long-term gain as I hope to stay in this racket for a long time, so I need to be up or the challenge. I believe I am, so let’s see what the year brings. Happy New Year to all! ******* A quick shout out to Hector Reda at Milk & Things who I spent some time with this week to get exact details on the incident at his shop in December. He has been part of the downtown scene since 1992 and we certainly don’t want to do anything to negatively impact his business. The intent of any paper is providing information. Tips for council in 2017: reader Dear Editor, I have been following numerous articles, and editorials in the news regarding the escapades of our current town council.......and their outstanding ability to squander away cash and opportunity faster than a pound o’ hot wings can disappear on a Wednesday night at the Judge. The list of, shall we say, council naughtiness (in keeping with the Christmas spirit) is impressive to say the least. Disgruntled business owners, lawsuits, hydro shenanigans, “double” council meetings, bested by a flim flam man selling ice pad refrigeration units, cost overrun for town hall, the now-it-works, now-itdoesn’t Co-Gen, cost overrun for the new recreation facility (located just far enough out of town that it might slip under the radar), and lastly, (because the paper can only print so much) the much talked about BIODIGESTER......Oh My! It’s enough to make one cry! And I’m sure Santa took notes - along with the Ombudsman - and that’s no Bull. Anyway, I got to thinking, what would The Donald do? Red Rover ... “Just The Training School I Was Looking For” Since opening its doors to the canine community of Grimsby and the greater Niagara area last year, Red Rover has been providing training services for the family dog and their efforts have been noted and rewarded. Red Rover was voted the Best in the West Diamond Award Winner for Best Pet Trainer in 2016.
“We were surprised and honoured to receive an award so soon in our first year of operation,” said Sandra King, Master Trainer and Behaviour Specialist. “Our goal is to teach dog owners how to train their dogs to willingly listen the first time, every time, no matter where they are. We strive to make it enjoyable and successful for the dogs as well as the people.” “Oskar and I were some of Red Rover’s first students. What a great journey it has been, strengthening that bond with my dog as we progressed through Novice and Intermediate courses,” says Laurie Swackhammer, owner of a miniature Schnauzer. “Sandra makes the courses comfortable for the dog and the human. “Red Rover Dog Training school was just the approach I was looking for my stubborn, 75 lbs., good natured rescue - a systematic process, a step by step method to obedience with a ton of praise and positive reinforcement - Sandra King is professional, generous and supportive, caring deeply for her human and canine pupils alike. We’re abundantly grateful,” says Dr. Joanne Hubley, owner of a mastiff mix. “I am a huge fan of Red Rover Dog Training! I brought a boisterous one-yearold German shepherd to training classes and within a few weeks saw so many behavioral improvements in addition to his overall response to the basic obedience commands. Classes are orderly, follow logical progression, and are fun!” says Diane Obrocki. It’s easy to have a ‘backyard champion’, a dog that listens well when at home, or while on familiar territory, but it only takes a bit more work and commitment from the dog owner to train their dog to listen while exposed to a variety of distractions. Owners are encouraged to expand the dogs’ horizons by exposing them to different environments with new sights, sounds, and smells at the Novice level, once the dog is comfortable with the exercise. “We also encourage our Novice grads to come on our Group Walks so that they can further their dog’s training with greater distractions and we are right there with them to assist, should they need any help,” says King. Intermediate Training is available for those who want to further their dog’s education. Here the distractions are increased and the dogs are challenged further by no longer being as attached to their owners. Leashes are dropped, or removed (in controlled environments first, of course) – there is no benefit in rushing the training – and new skills are added for the dog to learn. “I tell our students that Novice is like grade school where we have a lot of ‘training wheels’ so that the dog set up to succeed. Intermediate is more like university – the ground work has been laid – now we can start removing the training wheels and watch the dogs’ abilities really grow,” explains King. “I love the variety of skills Sandra teaches in her courses. The skills make my dog a good citizen in the world he lives in,” says Swackhammer. “Come see for yourself,” King encourages people to come and watch a class or two before signing up. If you do plan on coming, it’s best to call or text before dropping in. When you do come to watch a class, please leave your dog at home, and if you can, try to watch both a Novice and an Intermediate class. “I love the extra learning opportunities offered through Red Rover. We have participated in the dog body language seminar and the weekly walk series, both of which were very rewarding.” Laurie Swackhammer
