Truck fire, QEW closure clog Grimsby roads all Friday By Mike Williscraft NewsNow If anyone tried to get across Grimsby or even downtown for lunch or shopping last Friday, chances are it would have taken at the better part of an hour. The whole event, which spanned 10 hours for Grimsby Fire Department’s crew, led to a closure of the QEW Niagara bound with many motorists attempting to get to the Canada-USA outdoor hockey game which was part of the 2-18 World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo. “Because of the traffic clog, we had a crew located at the station. Getting to the station to get out on a call usually takes about five minutes, so we do that when traffic is backed up to cut down on any possible response times,”

said Deputy Chief Bill Thomson. As well, with manpower fully obligated both on the call and at the station, Grimsby enlisted Lincoln Fire Department as well to help with an additional pumper and they located a crew at Bartlett and Main to help cut any response times if a call in the east end came in. As fate would have it, there were three additional traffic accidents - one at Bartlett and Main, one at Ridge and Mountain Street and at the South Service Road. None involved serious injury, but all fuelled the traffic snarl. “The accident at Main and Bartlett, the Lincoln crew was right there, so there response was immediate. The use of their tanker shuttle made a huge difference and having them at Bartlett and Main cut down response time there, too.”

January is a great time for resolutions, especially when it comes to managing personal finances! One personal-finance resolution that has gotten much publicity lately is the “52-Week Money Challenge”, especially when presented as a way to save for your first home. The resolution is simple: During the first week of January, you save $10; During the second week, you save $20. You then resolve to keep adding $10 every week to the amount. If you follow the Challenge, you will have saved $13,780 by the end of the year (not including any nominal interest earned). The “challenge” with this Challenge is that, as the weeks progress, the savings requirement is accelerated, which will jeopardize your chance of successfully completing the 52-Week plan. For example, in January, the monthly savings requirement is just $100, however, in December, it becomes over $500 per week. As a mortgage broker, I spend a great deal of time on counselling firsttime home buyers on how to save for a downpayment. If you want to implement some type of New Year’s resolution to save for a downpayment on your first home, or, as an existing homeowner, to build savings, start by making a commitment to save a percentage of of your take-home pay each month. You can start with as little as 5% of your net earnings. You’ll be surprised at how easy this is to implement. For more information, please contact me. NYE RIDE nets zero alcohol-related charges Niagara Regional Police conducted RIDE checkpoints around Niagara Region on New Years Eve with zero DUI charges being laid. Members of the Niagara Regional Police conducted RIDE checkpoints within the Cities of Welland and Niagara Falls. Once again, officers noticed a high number of designated drivers and taxi cabs that were shuttling people to and from their New Year’s Eve festivities. Only a couple of drivers were required to provide samples of their breath for analysis and all of these drivers received acceptable results and were free to drive away. In addition to the roadside tests, officers issued several tickets, including one driver who was found to be operating his vehicle with no insurance. The completion of this New Year’s Eve program caps off another Festive RIDE season in Niagara. Officers conducted spot checks each week during the

month of December and made three impaired driving arrests and issued double the amount of three-day suspensions. The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing Impaired Driving Offences through education and the apprehenThe

Literacy Day at Grimsby Library later this month

Grimsby Public Library has a host of activities set for its annual Literacy Day event set for Saturday, Jan 27 from 2-4 p.m. An obstacle course, play dough and tattoo and balloon stations will all be part of the fun, but so will readings from Deer Diary, meeting Sparky fire safety mascot of Grimsby Fire Department and Fun School of Music display. The annual event, sponsored by Phelps Homes, also will host a demonstration from Yoga Truly and crafts from Speech Services Niagara as well as therapy dogs will be there. Literacy Day is a national activity with many communities hosting their own events.

The area for the count is a circle 15 km in diameter and ranges from west Stoney Creek to Vineland, all of Grimsby and south to Caistor Centre and includes a significant section of the Lake Ontario shoreline. Following a courageous struggle with ALS and dementia, Rene passed into eternal rest at his home in Grimsby, on Monday, January 1, 2018, in his 60th year. Beloved husband of Joan (nee van Weerden). Loved father of Lauren Hutten (Michael), Diedre Rozema (Eric) and Wendell Beintema. Cherished grandfather of Cullen and Bennett. Dear son of Martha and the late Harmen Beintema and son-in-law of the late Willemina and Garbrand van Weerden. Loved brother of John and Martha Beintema, Robert and Peggy Beintema, Jerry and Wendy Beintema, Fred and Ann Beintema and the late Hendrika and Dennis Chevalier. Brother-inlaw of Konnie and the late Garnet Peet, Ava and the late Herman Sandink, Pieter and Karen van Weerden, Julie and Albert van Tol, Neil and Liz van Weerden and Diederik van Weerden. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Rene’s passion was his work. As a long time local business owner and operator of Bevan Glass, he contributed to custom glass installations in many local schools, churches and homes. Memories of enjoying Rene’s favourite music, books and movies with him will be cherished by all who knew him. Kudos to Grimsby Fire The Friday of a holiday weekend, when most families are planning getaways or have already taken off, the last thing people want to do is put in a long work day, especially unplanned overtime to boot. But that is exactly what about 20 Grimsby firefighters with some help from Lincoln - did when a transport fire on the QEW forced a long-term closure of the highway forcing traffic trying to make time onto every possible east-west axis through town. The result was gridlock for about nine hours. Even Ridge Road was wall-to-wall. There was nothing easy about that day, but all was methodical with safety for all at the forefront of planning. It was an excellent job by Grimsby Fire (and Lincoln). Without doubt it was an unplanned start to New Year’s weekend, but they pulled it off. Kudos to all involved. M.W.

Timing is everything in this game Phew! The New Year is here and so are we. That’s a good thing, depending on your perspective, I supposed. There has been considerable tumult in the newspaper world, some care, some really give it no regard whatsoever. For obvious reasons, I tend to pay a bit of attention to these things. There is no reason to go about what the TorstarMetroland-Niagara This Week connection is up to. They have their cards to play after acquiring all the other newspapers in Niagara in that huge deal with Postmedia in late November. It was just over two years ago I first noted in this space they would eventually go to one edition in Niagara West and close their Grimsby office to consolidate at its Thorold HQ. The latter would be instantaneous, in my humble opinion, should I ever cease to exist. Even going once a week while NewsNow continues to inform (or annoy depending on your interests) the community is something they likely have preferred to delay, but their regional plan must have overshadowed a willingness to hold off. Closing other long-time, popular papers like Niagaraon-the-Lake’s Advance and Fort Erie’s Times were also in play. More stuff reductions and belt tightening like cutting a press run and circulation costs in Grimsby made economic sense. For us, it suits us great. Grimsby News started dying as a community favourite back when ads first went on the front page. Then that was followed by the wrap, sell the front page a few times for good measure, throw in a size shrinkage and you just have more dirt tossed on a shallow grave. But what my competi-

Our change was not to reduce service, press run, hours of operation, staffing or coverage. We will figure out a way. To that end, part of a plan which was first considered back in 2014 when I contacted a series of friends from my newspaper association days: friends who operated programs for volunteer pay systems. All were different. All had varying degrees of success. However, all proved very strategic in preserving the end product and level of service to the communities they serve and that is exactly the goal is for NewsNow (if you have not checked the back page, you may want to do that and come back to this spot...I’ll wait....) Back? Ok. From the very first summer of Niagara West start-up Part Deux in 2012 we have had regular comments made in all forms about: • how much people love the paper, • appreciate it is not a cookie cutter approach • it is fiercely independent and not beholden to advertisers in any way • the varied opinions stated

• it is ALL local copy • It is not part of a flyer and ad onslaught with the vast majority of information irrelevant to local readers, and more Simply, they like having us around. And we want to stick around, honest we do. Why? Sometimes I think it is my own community newspaper-itis which will not allow me to give up on the community. I would be guilt-ridden until the end of my days. I am already for selling The News in the first place. I kick myself daily for that one. But, here we are. The main thing I want to stress is, as these things can get spun in wrong directions, a volunteer pay system is just that – volunteer. Meaning if you get the paper but have no issue living without it and would rather not volunteer to pay anything, that is A-OK with me. We are happy to keep sending along NewsNow to your door with a smile each and every week. Not paying anything will not change a single thing!! Over the nearly six years we have been publishing, it would not be an exaggeration to say more than 1,000 people have made comments such as the one noted on Page 16 of this edition. Since early December it has been well over 250 if not closer 300 comments one way or the other. Each and every one was immensely appreciated. This all culminates in what you can read in that launch ad. There will be other special features built into that for those who would like them, such as a Breaking News Blast, which will go out directly to those who have volunteer pay subscriptions and provided their email address. Since starting NewsNow in May 2012, we have had a regular stream of readers calling, dropping in and emailing to say they greatly appreciate the paper and would like to support it in some way. Over the years, readers have said things such as, “I don’t have a business, so I cannot take out an ad, but I would not have no problem paying for it.” Since the major industry changes in late November, hundreds of similar comments and inquiries have been taken in by all our staff.

The time has come to open this door, good reader. Is NewsNow’s independent, accurate voice in the community of value to you? Would you like to support NewsNow in its efforts? This is your opportunity.

Effective January 1, 2018 we have set up an infrastructure to allow for a Volunteer Pay System Simply, this means, rain (or snow) or shine, you will always – each and every week – receive your copy of NewsNow. That will NOT change!!!! However, in consulting other publishers who currently operate volunteer pay systems in other communities, we have come up with a plan to give readers a chance to support NewsNow, which offers an incentive for their efforts. Should you CHOOSE to offer any level of support, here is how it will go:

Subscriptions: 3 Months - $10 suggested • One Year - $30 suggested Every three months, all those who have offered a minimum of the suggested payment will be eligible for a draw for $200. Anyone offering a one-year suggested payment will automatically be eligible for all four draws in 2018. Draws will be conducted in January, April, July and October with each winner published in NewsNow. We will back HST out of each payment to make things as simple as possible.
