Nowhere to go but up for airport By Mike Williscraft For NewsNow A new year, a new direction for Grimsby Air Park. Ok, raise your hands if you didn’t know Grimsby had an airport. It does, and Tom Brown is the proud new owner. Brown took over from long-time own-
er/operator Ralph Meyer , who, in turn, had succeeded his father Ralph Sr., in running the Mud Street facility. The airpark has been in operation since 1978, is now known as Grimsby Regional Airport. Brown, a professor in Toronto, has been a long-time aviation
enthusiast who has been looking at the Grimsby opportunity for several years. “It needs a lot of work, but it is coming along,” said Brown, who noted several immediate upgrades have been planned, some executed already including electric doors openers
being installed on the hangars. “We’ve had our eye on the place for a long time and there is a lot to like about it.” The 120 acre site has room to grow, and that is the plan over time. “There are lots of things we would like to do, but we are
going to grow into things,” said Brown. The number of planes which can be accommodated has expanded from 25 to 35 and the spaces have filled at a steady rate since those came on line. “We will fill what we have and grow when we need to,” noted
Plummer, a West Lincoln resident. Important to the success of the operation is word-ofmouth among those in the flying community, said Brown. “You want people to like using the facility and come back again and again, he said. See PLANE, Page 3

It’s very handy.” Also as part of the offering at Grimsby Regional Airport is the addition of a full-time, on-site airplane mechanic. “I have taken my mobile maintenance business and made Grimsby Regional Airport my new home,” said Kyle DeSaverio, owner of Aviator Mobile Maintenance. “It has been great to work with the
new airport owners, staff and aircraft owners on the field. “Last Hurrah” Reunion for GSS
On May 20, 1926, 200 students entered the newly built Grimsby High School on Boulton Avenue. There were only six staff members plus a teaching principal in the beginning. In May, 2020, Grimsby S.S. will be 94 years old and we will celebrate past years of learning, friendships made, and the times had as thousands of students walked through the halls over all those years. When the doors close at GSS for the last time, staff and students will move forward into a new building and new memories will be made. At this time, planning is underway for a “Last Hurrah” Reunion to be held on the long weekend in May 2020. The Reunion in 2000 was a huge success, and our Last Hurrah expected to be another huge event and success. Among potential plans: • Friday, May 15 – an evening at GSS, with a wine and cheese social, decade rooms, and memorabilia. • Saturday, May 16 – a day at the Peach King arena starting with a pancake breakfast. Later, there will be music along with food and re-
freshments during the afternoon and into the evening. • Sunday, May 17 – an optional gathering at Centennial Park for groups that would like to get together. “We are looking for volunteers in all capacities to help with this event. From decade room organizers, to set-up and takedown/clean-up crews on the Friday night. Peach Tree count planned for Saturday The Hamilton Naturalists’ Club will be holding its 4th Annual Peach Tree Christmas Bird Count, CBC, this Saturday, Jan. 5. The area for the Peach Tree count ranges from east Stoney Creek and includes all of Grimsby and runs down to Smithville, Empire Corners and Caisterville. Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing
loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

Hold phone on high school changes While West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s future is still in the hands of Hamilton Health Sciences officials to do the right thing, and the proposed GO station for Grimsby’s path has been rerouted though private/public partnerships, don’t be surprised if the proposed mega-high school also takes a financial back seat for the provincial government. With money drying up on several major fronts, the notion of forking out $10 or $20 million for renovations would seem much more palatable than the $40 million-plus a new one will cost. And this is to say nothing of the remediation costs of the lands on which the proposed school is to be built, a site which was a well-known brick yard in its day. With everything else in a holding pattern, it would certainly not be a stretch to consider Grimsby Secondary and Beamsville District may have a few more days in the sun than previously projected. To weed retail or not to weed retail? Ok, the holidays are over so let’s get back at it by wading into the weeds, or weed, as it were. Back in mid-December I posted a comment on Twitter about weed and growops - the legal ones. Municipalities are in a tricky spot with a Jan. 22 deadline approaching to pull the trigger on whether or not to opt in to allowing cannabis retailers in their communities, or opt out. On the face of it, if you have a conservative community, it would be quite logical to opt out, but nothing in this quagmire is as simple as it seems. This is due in large part because so much of the impacts on different things are flat out unknown. There is no government official of ministry to provide a steady hand on the rudder. It actually seems as though there is not even a rudder. One could point fingers at the federal government and say the whole thing was too rushed, but I don’t’ believe that is it. No matter when this legal marijuana was brought it the same level of chaos would have ensued. It is a growing pain, if you will. On the core issue of whether to legalize or not, I am wholly indifferent. Not in any way, shape or form to be pious about it, but I have never partaken of the wacky weed. I cannot really even explain why. It was just a choice I made back in high school and somehow - not sure quite sure how given some of the college roommates I had. I don’t believe legal marijuana will be a scourge upon society. No more than alcohol, quite likely less than, from what I have researched. Having it available in retail stores will not make it more available than it already is
MIKE WILLISCRAFT now. Any, and by any I mean any, high school kid could contact a dealer and have whatever they wanted quite likely delivered right to their door in an hour or less. To say marijuana is readily available is a colossal understatement and if you think otherwise you are horribly disconnected. Retail will give the market consistency and it will impact the illegal distribution market, too. A big motivator here for the government is tax revenue. They have been trying to fight illegal growing and selling for years, watching drug cartels make billions, so why are they missing the boat on their cut via taxation? Without question, marijuana use for medical reasons is long overdue in gaining major traction. No doubt, the synthetic drug manufacturing lobby has had a lot to do with that. I understood the logic of marijuana use all along, but holy cow did I get shock when I had a call from my mom a few months ago. My mom, now in her 80s, has had decades of pain from arthritis. She’s had a knee replaced. Docs want to replace her shoulder as well and her back hasn’t been good in 30 years. A career working nights as an RN in a nursing home,
lifting and turning all those patients has taken a toll. You would never find a more straight laced, traditional medicine poster child in your life – never. “Guess where I am?” she said on the phone. “Hmmm, the Kremlin,” I said. “The weed store,” says mom. Silence. Damn! I have known for a long time, but nothing could convey how she was feeling more to me than hearing those three words. Last stop on the option bus, right there, people. That means her meds, of which she would have tried virtually everything. She was always cognizant of addiction and when you have resigned to taking something, anything, long-term, one should always be aware of that pitfall. Comments around Grimsby’s council table about possibly opting out would still mean you had all the issues to deal with without any government support, I believe, are correct. I don’t fault any municipality which opts out and I understand if they opt in. For those who claim jobs is a key reason to opt in, nope, not buying that one. If any communities future success is dependent on becoming a weed growing/selling haven, then any neighbouring community can have at it. The growing facilities should be no place near any residential and certainly not in prominent locations like the service road. That is just embarrassing. I still can’t believe that Durham Road and South Service Road location got approved. I know Grimsby and Lincoln are looking for feedback, so let’s have it people! What do you think?
