FORT is offering a new creative writing program for youth in Grades 6 – 8 to help bolster self-esteem. The program is designed to help kids express themselves through the written word, whether that be poetry, short stories or novels. Re:Write will enable kids to convey their emotions and views through writing and provide the freedom to develop those skills in a tolerant environment. Grimsby heads into budget talks debt free By Katherine Grant NewsNow When Grimsby Council gets into its budget discussions next month, it will be with a clean slate. “It is going to be a very good budget year,” said Coun. Steve Berry. “Grimsby is debt-free. How many municipalities can
say that?” Berry was referring to the 10-year-long debenture to pay for the library, art gallery and arena. That debt is now paid. “That $880,000 payment is now gone so we are debt free,” said Berry, adding there will be a number of new items up for discussion including the sports
park and transit. “If GO comes to Grimsby we are going to need connections. We have to look at what we can and can’t provide,” he said. The bottom line, he added, will be the cost. “Before we get into budget talks near the end of February we need to have a serious dis-
cussion about transit,” he said. During Monday night’s Planning meeting, committee members shared their thoughts on transit and what it might look like, including potential grant money. A synopsis of that meeting will be used to set an agenda to get discussions underway.

Things have changed for Chef Smith As he commanded the room at Windows Room at Inn on The Twenty, chef Michael Smith told an enthralled brunch crowd a lot of things have changed in his life. “I’m just a real guy. I have drank the KoolAid. Every Friday, I guess who is taking the garbage can to the curb,” Smith said to a round of laughter. But it is everything around him that has changed: eight cookboooks (his mom gets every first copy) with a ninth in the can; the TV appearances: the public speaking, and; events like Twenty Valley Tourism’s Winter Winefest. Smith hosted a din-
ner in the same spot on Saturday night and a brunch Sunday, both sold out. He stressed to those in attendance at the brunch the “very real perils of processed food”. “Make local choices where possible,” said Smith, adding, “It is important to sit
down with your families” at meal time. Whether it was presigning his books at his first in-store signing at which nobody showed, or seeing Martha Stewart steal two books on her way out of a Toronto show, Smith said things have changed a lot for him.

Former Commodore Straits sank at dock By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The tug Commodore Straits has visited the Great Lakes from time to time. It entered the Seaway in 2004 and returned through 2010, but its future is now in doubt. The vessel was built at Halifax in 1965 and went west to push or tow newsprint barges from Canadian paper mills to San Francisco and
Shipwreck Long Beach, California, as Haida Brave. It was sold and renamed Commodore Straits in 1973. It was laid up at the time of a sale to a division of Upper Lakes Shipping in 2003. The tug was used to handle grain barges and took one as far south as Costa Rica. The ship was laid up at Trois Rivieres,
QC when it began leaking and settled on the bottom of the St. Lawrence on Dec. 26, 2014. Salvagers got the tug righted but it drifted offshore and settled on the bottom once more. The 50-year old vessel had recently been renamed Chaulk Determination but the current owner had not yet painted that name on the bow.

New Toronto Maple Leafs coach is Peach King alumnus By Katherine Grant NewsNow Former Peach King Peter Horachek has been named head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Horachek, a native of Stoney Creek, played one season, 1975-76, with the Grimsby Peach Kings before going to the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Generals. “Those were some really good days. I played defence for the Peach Kings and when I went to Oshawa they made me a forward,”
said Horachek during an interview with NewsNow in October while he was in town for the unveiling of the Peach Kings historical mural. On Jan. 7, Horachek was named interim head coach for the Leafs following the firing of head coach Randy Carlyle. Two days later Horachek was named Leaf’s head coach for the rest of the 2014-2015 season. Horachek, 54, had a long career in the See LEAFS, Page 7

During his October visit to Grimsby, Horachek noted there was some building to do with the Leafs but there was some real strength to build on. “Our penalty killing is so much better,” he said. “There are some excellent players on this team.” Horachek also made note of the upcoming 100th anniversary year of the Maple Leafs. “You have to respect that the team has lasted this long,” he said. “Hockey people are down-to-earth, they have a real love for the game and you have to respect that.” The Leafs will mark
100 years during the 2016-17 season. The team was first known as the Toronto Arenas before becoming the St. Patricks (1919).

Corrosion is caused by a faulty connection that allows battery acid to escape and corrode surrounding areas. •Install a battery blanket to wrap around the battery and fit inside of the battery cover. A cord with a plug runs from the blanket to a wall outlet. The blanket can produce enough heat to keep the battery fluid from freezing. A trickle charger will deliver enough power to the battery while
the car is off to keep it from freezing. •Do not start the car with the heater and the radio on. They can use up the power coming from the car’s alternator and prevent the battery from charging. Do not leave the heat and the radio on while the car is idling. Otherwise the car will not be putting out enough power for the alternator to charge the battery. •If your car will be stored in a garage for the winter, disconnect the battery. Certain devices, such as clocks and alarm systems, continue to drain battery power.

Holidays prime time for car theft Automotive break-ins and thefts are something no driver wants to experience. According to Statistics Canada, about 100,000 cars are stolen on average each year. Although there are many precautions to help safeguard against car theft, being particularly vigilant during certain holidays might be the best preventive measure a driver can take. Car thefts are more likely to occur during certain holidays. From least to worst: •Christmas Day: Least likely. Thieves may be more interested in opening presents under the tree than venturing out in the cold to steal a car or truck. •Christmas Eve: Those who are engaging in some last-minute shopping at the mall or visiting friends and family for a cup of eggnog may want to be cautious as to where they park their cars. •Valentine’s Day: While couples are dining at favorite restaurants, a car thief may be making off with a stolen car. •New Year’s Eve: So many people
are caught up in the moment of toasting the new year that they may not realize a thief is making his or her own resolution to steal a car. •Labour Day: The unofficial end to summer is a prime time for vehicle thefts. •Victoria Day: The unofficial start to the summer entertaining season is also a prime time for car thefts. •New Year’s Day: Second highest numbers of thefts reported. While people are sleeping off the remnants of their midnight partying, theives were making off with their cars. •Halloween: Although not an official holiday, Halloween is when the most number of vehicles are stolen. The trick is on the person who comes home to find the family car missing. Always park in well-lit areas, keep belongings out of view, make sure the vehicle is always locked even if it’s in the driveway, invest in an alarm or immobilization system, and to be extra careful if your car driven is one of the most-stolen makes and models.

Casseroles: deliver best, easy to make comfort food
By Nancy Morgan SAUSAGE & RICE CASSEROLE •1 lb bulk pork sausage •3 cups sliced mushrooms •2 celery stalks, diced •1 large red pepper, diced •1 large onion, chopped •1 tsp dried thyme leaves, crushed •1/2 tsp dried marjoram leaves, crushed •1-3/4 cups chicken broth •1 can Cream of Mushroom soup •1 (6 oz box) pkg Uncle Ben’s Longgrain & Wild Rice mix •1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until well browned, stirring to break meat up. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Pour off all but 1 tbsp fat. Reduce heat to medium and add mushrooms, celery, pepper, onion, thyme, marjoram and seasoning packet from rice mix. Cook and stir until vegetables are tender-crisp. Stir in broth, soup, rice mix and 1/2cup cheese, mix well then pour into a greased 13x9” baking dish. Cover with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 1 hour or until casserole is hot and bubbly and rice is tender. Top with rest of cheese and bake another 5 minutes. Makes 6 servings.

Died at peace and in good company on Sunday, 11 January. Lillian was born in the farmhouse of her parents Harry Kitchen Griffith and Caroline (Carrie) Udell on 11 August 1924. Attended Park School next door, then Grimsby High School. Was a proud Farmerette during the war years. Loyal employee of Ontario Hydro (Beamsville) for 30 years. Doting wife of Karlis Vikelis (d. 1995). Adoring baby sister of Flight Sergeant Robert Kitchen Griffith (d. 1942), Mary Trant (née Griffith, d. 1937), and Jack (d. 1994). Cherished friend and sister-in-law of Mary Gordon Griffith (d. 2009). Loved aunt of Robert Kitchen Griffith of Beijing, People’s Republic of China (and wife Jane) and Jagg Griffith Carr-Locke of Grimsby (and husband Peter). Another Christmas in the books Christmas 2014 has passed and is now just a pleasant memory for most of us. Local agencies and groups that organized food drives and hamper programs for those who needed extra support during the holiday season can breathe a collective sigh of relief. They did it. Hundreds of families across Niagara west had their tables and hearts filled because of those efforts. Children had gifts to open, parents were able to provide a special family meal, and, for a time, all was right in the world. It is a true sign of a caring community when it steps up and embraces its own without judgement.
Another piece in NewsNow puzzle Asiyefunzwa na mamae hufunzwa na ulimwengu. No, none of that is a typo. It is Swahili, and it means regardless of a child’s biological parent(s) its upbringing belongs to the community. In North America translation, it has been popularly adapted to mean, “it takes a village”. Hillary Clinton made that phrase popular with her 1996 book with the same title as she referred to it taking a village to raise children these days. That phrase extrapolates into other realms as well, such as, it takes a village to create a community newspaper. And that is true of us. Like any business organization, no matter the size, one is only as strong as its weakest link. We could have Pulitzer quality editorial, National Geographic level photos, spectacular graphics and design. None of that would matter if the publication does not get to the doors of our loyal and dedicated readers. On a Wednesday night, our circulation process starts with some very hard working people dropping by CanWeb Printing to pick up that week’s edition to either start their rural route delivery, or make their run to drop bundles at the home of our nearly 200-strong carrier force. It is hard work, sometimes, at weird hours (if we are late) and it all needs to be done right and on time. If a driver is off by 10 papers, that means I take 10 copies from our office
MIKE WILLISCRAFT count and drop it by the carrier’s home so they can complete their route after school. Most of our carriers do their routes in the morning, so it may mean going out a second time in some cases. Mix in this bitter cold and/ or the recent snow and it can be a real challenge not only for the carriers to get the paper to readers’ doors, but for drivers to make their way up sometimes dark laneways with papers and bundles. As I say, it is hard work and all of us at NewsNow appreciate the weekly efforts our circulation team puts in. At one time or another, I have done practically every route we have, both on foot and rural deliveries, so when I hear from a carrier or driver about the effort it takes, I know from first-hand experience. But I have always tried to live by a rule my first boss told me. He was in his 70s when I was working for him back in the 80s. His theory of being a boss, “Don’t ask someone to do something you are not willing to do yourself”. Let me tell you, those words have served
me in good stead for 30plus years. Today, finally, we received word we have received FDSA accreditation. In simple terms, our circulation system has been audtied from stem to stern and has met with the approval of the most stringent auditing organization in North America. FDSA (Flyer Distribution Standards Association) takes its approval process very seriously. We have been working on this for more than four months. This audit includes every facet of the operation: inserting flyers, what gets shipped where, what the drivers take out, what gets to the door, you name it. Does that mean there is never a week where little Johnny or Janey erred and left a paper on a porch by mistake to blow around a neighbourhood? Heck no. It happens almost every week, but we’ll take that customer another paper that day if need be and the carrier will get notice that papers need to be secure and dry. Mistakes happen. It is how they are dealt with that makes the difference. When you consider we are now delivering more than 26,000 papers a week, getting a half-dozen calls in a week, if that, is pretty darn good and it is completely due to the efforts of our carrier force and dedicated drivers. Congratulations to them on achieving this accrediation. It is yet another brick in the foundation of what is becoming a solid and growing business foundation. Thanks for your efforts!

Writer: Lincoln council fails its citizens Dear Editor, Last Monday night, Lincoln Council washed its hands of Vineland’s 1895 schoolhouse. Councillor Wayne MacMillan argued Council has “little say” in the historic building’s future: its demolition was implicitly approved by the previous Council. Councillor Rob Foster contended this was the right decision, but that Council failed in communicating it. Council’s communications on the schoolhouse have indeed been a mess. Councillors’ statements have shown that they don’t understand their obligations under the Ontario Heritage Act to protect Lincoln’s historic sites. Furthermore, they don’t understand basic budgeting: saving the schoolhouse could be funded from outside grants without diverting money from other activities. Sadly, our Councillors also don’t understand how to open an email. We sent them extensive research on heritage policy, the historic and architectural significance of the schoolhouse, and funding options for repurposing. But our messages to them went largely unopened and even fewer received a response. Oh well: our District School Board of Niagara trustee didn’t read them either! Sure, everyone’s swamped by email, but we also made three presentations to Council that laid out all of these issues.
Letter to the Editor Councillors didn’t ask a single question – not one! Why? It would have given us a chance to explain the mistakes in their muddled assertions that it was impossible for them to do anything. Councillors were keen last Monday to dispel what they called “misinformation” about the Vineland’s schoolhouse. Here’s all you really need to know: Council has done nothing to save this historic building. It didn’t even try. Councillors ignored months of requests in 2013 and 2014 by their Heritage Committee to protect the schoolhouse. Instead, they sat on their hands in the DSBN’s Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) and then approved the Board’s plan to destroy Vineland’s most important landmark. This isn’t a fringe issue: more people signed petitions to save Vineland’s schoolhouse than voted for any Councillor in October. Pay yourself first, you deserve it For many, retirement is something off in a distance, something that gets lost and often overlooked as we get busy with life.
