basking in the glow of the holiday season, Beamsville’s Konkle family was dealing the sudden passing of Kathy Konkle from an apparent stroke. Kathy was a huge fan of the Grimsby Peach Kings and of her son, Mike, who plays for the Jr. C squad. She
had not missed a game in years, until this past Sunday. “Everyone was in shock,” said Peach Kings coach Dave Brownridge. “She was a very nice, vibrant lady and Mike’s a great kid. I was talking with him on an ongoing basis. We left things completely up to him
as we did not know when he would be ready to play.” As soon as news of Kathy’s passing hit the organization, teammates jumped in with their support of Mike. “The boys are a tight-knit group and they all got in touch with Mike as soon as

Police purchase ipods for Deer Park Villa residents Deer Park Villa seniors’ home in Grimsby was the beneficiary of some new iPods and speakers this Christmas thanks to members of the Niagara Regional Police Service’s 8 district. The NRP held its annual Christmas breakfast at headquarters in St. Catharines on Dec. 11. In total, $1,940 was raised through ticket sales and chocolate basket sales. The money was donated to St. Catharines Community Care to help three local families that are in need due to illness or unemployment, according to a media release. Each family received $500 to help them through the
holiday season. Also this year, thanks to the generosity of 8 district, which serves Niagara west, and the Senior Officers’ Association, an additional $500 was raised to purchase iPods and a speaker for Deer Park Villa. “Music therapy is very effective when working with Alzheimer residents as music is often the last memory to go,” said Sgt. Richard Gadreau, NRP media office. “This was a generation that was raised sitting around listening to music. Through music therapy, residents are drawn into singing, humming or simply opening their eyes.”

Cell phones, laptops, ipods, tablets have all conspired to erode much of the previously productive “free” time many people used to enjoy. In my estimation, it is the gobbling up of
that free time which has caused the illusion of time passing more quickly for the youth of today. If you have a teen you will know what I mean. It is not unusual to pull up to the high school, any high school, and see a group of a half-dozen kids standing in a circle with nary a spoken word between them. Cells or iphones in hand, pounding away texts madly to, quite likely, the person standing right next to them. While it sounds ridiculous, it happens a lot. When was the last time you heard the phone in your home ring and it was for your kid? And I’m talking land line here, if you even have one anymore. In discussing the time/ speed illusion with my son, I told him to slow things down. If things seem fast now, look out! Wait till he hits college or the workforce when time is no longer under his control. The immediacy of online has created a ton of issues for kids in terms of what they think is reality. My view always was, kids have their whole lives for reality. Kids should be kids for as long as possible. Time waits for no man, or woman. But the way to slow it down is to take time for yourself. Nothing fancy, just shut the world off, unplug and recharge. There...my reflective offering to close out the year. I plan to heed this vice in 2015 and I hope you do too.
Warm, comforting new year’s dinner

This menu offers a warm and comforting winter meal that everyone will enjoy at your table. Note: roast is pre-prepared night before COMFORT ROAST •3 tbsp Dijon mustard •1 tbsp prepared horseradish •1 clove garlic, minced •1 tsp Montreal steak spice
•3 lb beef sirloin tip roast Combine first four ingredients in small bowl. Place roast on large plate. Rub mixture over entire surface of roast. Chill, covered, overnight. Place roast on greased wire rack set in 9x9� pan. Bake, uncovered, on bottom rack in a 475 deg oven for about 30 minutes or until browned. Reduce heat to 300 and bake for another 2-2-1/2 hours or
until meat thermometer inserted into thickest part reads 160 deg for medium or until desired doneness. Remove from oven and cover with foil. Let stand 10 mins before serving. Makes 12 servings.
