Up Front Casablanca hosts brides

Lincoln hires new rec director

Asaad Hoosein has been hired as the new director of sports, recreation and culture at Town of Lincoln. Hoosein has most recently served as senior manager, capital projects, engineering, parking and transportation for Niagara Parks Commission. In making the announcement, Lincoln CAO Mike Kirkopoulos said, “Asaad’s experience has enabled him to cultivate a broad range of experience in variety of building types, as well as in public engagement and consultation.” His first day on the job was Feb. 16.

Rob MacIsaac, president and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences will make the long-awaited announcement. “Starting on March 3, we’ll begin

sharing our emerging vision for WLMH at a series of events being organized across the region,” said MacIsaac. To get to point, HHS officials have conducted a lengthy series of public meetings and open houses in communities where each of its six member hospitals serve all as part of the “Planning Our Healthy Future” process.

This process, officials said, was a crucial stepping stone in that services to be offered at each site must work in synch with an overall plan. Once the services have been established, the capital needs to execute the approved services could be assessed and dealt with. “Right now, the focus now is 100 per cent on the clinical services

Jack Watt of Grimsby will be one of seven Ontario residents to receive the prestigious Ontario Heritage Award’s Lifetime Achievement designation at a ceremony tomorrow, Feb. 26. Watt was elated to get the news he would be recognized for a lifetime of work by Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell during a presentation at Queen’s Park. “It is pretty exciting, a real honour. As I understand it, only a few of these are given out each year,” said Watt. Watt and his late wife Wendy were both very well known for their interest and dedication to heritage in town. “I restored four historic homes in town, two of which have been designated and Wendy was right behind me all way,” said Watt. He noted that he was very fortunate that the family which purchased it after WWII had detailed drawings of the entire house done in its original state, before it was renovated for apartments. With drawings in hand, he was able to restore the home to all original specs. Similarly, he restored the Moore Cottage – the current home of Glen Elgin Realty at Elm and Mountain – to original. That job necessitated getting timber from Manitoulin Island to match the original, among other measures. Watt currently serves on Grimsby’s Heritage Advisory Committee. He also has been president of the Grimsby Historical Society and been a member of the Grimsby Museum board of directors.

The goal of the ongoing study is to determine “how hospitals and other healthcare services should be shaped over the next 10 to 20 years.” “The needs of the community are changing, and so too are the demands for healthcare services. Together with the community and our health system partners, we are developing a plan that will be sustainable and effective for years to come,” noted Whitnell. It is that kind of sentiment which is music to the ears of Grimsby officials and residents who have supported the facility since its existence was first called into question in 1996. “My daughter Dawn and I were there at the first rally at Grimsby Secondary School when we saw you crawling around on the roof taking pictures,” said Marion Thorp, president of the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce and general manager of Grimsby Benevolent Fund, of the local media coverage. “We were also right there with you

at the second one. WLMH is a must for the community in all aspects.” Thorp noted, aside from having a great level of care in the community, the economic impact of all the direct and indirect jobs related to WLMH cannot be underestimated. HHS has recognized this since it amalgamated with WLMH. “Hamilton Health Sciences is proud to be part of West Niagara,” said MacIsaac. “The redevelopment of WLMH is a top priority for HHS, so that we can meet the healthcare needs of patients in the regions of West Niagara and Hamilton for decades to come.” As Whitnell noted, the services is a key step in an ongoing process. “Once we get future state services approved, we then move into building and capital items,” said Whitnell. “The up front and most important step of any redevelopment is alignment on what services will be under the roof. This is the heavy lifting phase: figuring out a building and construction is straightforward relative to this phase.” Thursday’s public meeting will run from 6:30-8 p.m.

Members of the Beamsville Women’s Institute presented firefighters from Lincoln Fire Department with “comfort bears” to be used among the municipality’s four stations. The bears were donated to commenorate the 119th anniversary of the WI in Stoney Creek. Two elements combine for new PoultryFest feature Taking advantage of its new festival location at the West Niagara Agricultural Centre, PoultryFest organizers are introducing The Shopping Centre. The shows, formerly known as “The Giant Craft Show” and the “Marketplace” have been combined to form the “PoultryFest Shopping Centre”. “The new location allows us, during the June 25 festival, to house all of our vendors indoors in the Richardson Building while still allowing the choice for outdoor display space,” said Shopping Centre co-ordinator, Angela Veldman. In total, there will be nearly 100 spots available, some with hydro. Also included in the Richardson Building will be a wine garden and live music throughout the day.

Veldman added that applications for spaces are already coming in as crafters and other vendors are excited with the prospect of being indoors. “I’m encouraging potential vendors to get their application in as soon as possible,” Veldman said. “The new location also allows for a Friday evening setup with full security being supplied by PoultryFest.” Early Saturday morning will also still be a setup option time for vendor guests. Spots will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Leap year loonies can help refugees A loonie can help refugees. Next Monday, Feb. 29, the West Niagara Refugee Partnership is hoping to raise some much-needed funds for Syrian refugees. The group got an official designation from Grimsby Town Council to declare the day “Leap Year - Loonies for Refugees Day.” “We plan on putting jars in interested churches and businesses on Feb. 29 and asking people who visit them to put a loonie in the jar. All money raised will go directly to the refugee account,” said Judy Connor. “We would like to have the towns of Grimsby, Beamsville, and Winona be aware of what we are doing,

and if they are interested, have the chance to be involved in this partnership.” The partnership includes four churches: St. Alban’s in Beamsville, St. John the Evangelist in Winona, Trinity United and St. Andrew’s in Grimsby. “We formed this partnership last October to rescue a refugee family, not necessarily from Syria but from one of the 127 countries where the U.N. is working with refugees,” said Connor. The Niagara Anglican Diocese is the Refugee Sponsorship Agreement Holder with the Federal government. The local representatives are a constituent group of that agreement.

One of hockey’s greatest story tellers visits Grimsby

Picture this: an on-amission Hazel McCallion – with the inflamed eyes of Rocket Richard – breaking in on the wing and firing a wicked shot at Johnny Bower. No dream. That was just one of the stories with which former Leafs great Johnny Bower regaled visitors at For The Love of The Game on Saturday. Mr. Bower was in town for an autograph session at the downtown sports memorabilia shop. He noted that his story of former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion allowed her to fulfill a lifetime wish, to score a goal on the China Wall. He allowed her three shots in the parking lot of Mississauga’s town hall – the first hit him where men don’t want to get hit; the second on the shoulder, and; the third went through the five-home, Bower smiled.
