Catharines earlier this month. Berg was at Monday night’s Lincoln town council meeting to accept a commendation for her exploits. In making the presentation, Mayor Sandra Easton said, “These kinds of things don’t happen every day. We’re very proud of all you

Shire’s OMB appeal gets underway in Lincoln Shire Corp.’s appeal of a Town of Lincoln decision to deny its request to operate a human biosolids storage facility at its Frost Road property got underway Tuesday morning. The 35-acre property had a previous use as a poultry processing plant, with ponds in place which were used for waste. The hearing got underway
with two preliminary motions were heard. The first was the Community Association’s motion to dismiss Shire’s appeal on the basis that a permit under the Environmental Protection Act was required before the OMB process. This was denied. The second motion – to phase the hearing to deal with the threshold planning issue first,
which the Town supported – was also heard. The Board reserved its decision Tuesday and Wednesday denied the motion to phase. “A large contingent of residents were in attendance today,” said Lincoln CAO Mike Kirkopoulos. “It is obvious this issue has created a significant level anxiety in the community and there

Genealogy workshop draws crowd When Ev Page and Dorothy Turcotte first talked about a series of genealogy workshops sponsored by Grimsby Historical Archives, they thought that they might have 12-15 registrants. The smallest rental room at Livingston
Activity Centre was reserved for the event. When the first workshop was last Saturday, about 70 people turned out. Fortunately, by that time, interest in the workshop had prompted a switch to the largest room in
the centre. This basic workshop was dubbed Genealogy 101, and was planned for beginner genealogists, although researchers of all levels were welcome. The free program consisted of an introduction on getting

started on research, followed by a power point presentation describing resources available to researchers. Questions were invited at all points. One of the questions was asked by a man of Italian descent who wanted to know how to research websites in a language he does not know. That was an easy one for the presenters, and resulted in an interesting story about the questioner’s family history. This caused Turcotte to remind the audience that names and dates are genealogy. Stories about the people in the families are family history. A second workshop in the series is set for Feb. 28 also at the activity centre.

Scott NHL all-star MVP For one day, anyway, even people who had no interest in hockey paid attention to the sport to see who this John Scott fellow was. Well, among other things, Scott is a former Grimsby Peach King and, if not for then-owner Lyle Killins and coach Dave Brownridge, Grimsby might have been the last stop on the hockey bus for Scott. “John showed up at the arena one Sunday afternoon when we were having Peach King tryouts. It was about midSeptember,” recalled Killins this week. “I walked into the arena and there was this extremely tall young fellow standing against the glass
by himself. I walked over to him and introduced myself and asked if I could help him. John immediately said yes and introduced himself.” It is a long way from a desperate visit to a Jr. C team in serious rebuild state to MVP of the National Hockey League All-Star game, but that is exactly what transpired through the most unlikely of routes. That 1999-2000 season was also the first for coach Brownridge who now owns the club. “We thought, here is a young man who deserves an opportunity so I introduced him to Dave. Dave said that he would be more than happy to have him tryout.
John was big and had some raw talent,” recalled Lyle of the then 16-year-old. “We saw potential in John so Dave made him his project for the year. John continued to improve significantly game by game as the year progressed.” “John was the life of the parties at the post-game celebrations at Teddy’s - on the dance floor, arms flailing, legs gyrating, and a big smile ear to ear. He always participated to the fullest.” That was in full evidence Sunday when he scored two goals to lead his team to a win and was carried off the ice on his teammates shoulders.

From Page 1 team jersey for the first time and ringing in her ears from the “crazy” crowd at the Meridian Centre still fresh in her mind, the 17-yearold Beamsville native made a big life decision this week. “I’m going to Brock this fall taking concurrent education. I want to be a teacher,” said Berg, after the council presentation. And why not? It is completely apropos since the parents she spoke of off the top are a teacher, mom Wendy, and a former National Hockey Leaguer, dad Bill. Bill, who had a 11year NHL career including a run with the Maple Leafs in the early 90s, has been the provider of sage advice as Annie’s hockey road has progressed. “It is great to be able to sit with my
dad and dissect the game afterward. I beat myself up more than he ever would,” said Annie of looking for ways to improve her game. “My mom is the fun. She lightens the mood and she’s great to go shopping with at the tournaments,” Annie smiled, noting she is a better shopper than hockey player... as her parent’s credit cards will attest. While competing for Team Canada was a dream for her, it was purely magical for her parents. “I am so proud of how she stuck to it. She had a really hard time when she didn’t get picked from the camp in Calgary to go to the Lake Placid. It was really emotional to see her out there in St. Catharines,” said Bill. She has come a long way since she
quit dance partway through what would become her first year in hockey. “The season was half over and she was too old for tyke, but they let her play that level since she had never played before,” said Bill, who noted it was the end of her first full season that her talent became apparent. For Annie, the main takeaways from the Worlds were two things: the atmosphere in the arena and keen attention youngsters had in following the team. “When you’re used to playing in front of 50 people and you go out and there is 3,000 people for warm up, it is insane. It was a great step forward for women’s hockey,” said Annie, noting she would slow things down and appreciate them more if she gets the
opportunity to play for Team Canada again. “The other thing was the kids, who would be right there with their face pressed up against the glass, boys and girls all hyped up. It was great to see them so excited.” For Wendy, she is pleased her daughter is really enjoying what she is doing. “She works very hard, so I am glad she is having fun with it, too,” said Wendy. As well, Wendy gets to enjoy watching games from a different perspective. “I went to see Bill at a lot of games, but now I get to sit with him,” she said, pointing out he supplies his own play by play while in the stands. “He talks constantly and I like to hear his perspective.” Like mother, like daughter.

Rankin Run a worthy project for groups The Rankin Cancer Run – which has been a huge supporter of West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary – would be a great opportunity for schools or groups to work together on a project. Run director Mary Ann Edwards says schools can follow the lead of EL

Last year, the Auxiliary reached its $200,000 goal with the help of Rankin Run, allowing it to purchase two new ultrasound units for WLMH. “Think of how much more could be raised and given back if all schools got on board,” said Edwards, who added more than 60 schools participated last year. Heritage designation causes stir among historians The designation of a 100-year-old home on Main Street West in Grimsby has generated some negative feedback from local historians who say the information purported is incorrect. Town planner Janice Hogg, who coordinated the designation and erection of a heritage plaque at 270 Main St. W., dubbed Olivia Hare House, said town staff provided the research on the property. “The findings of this research was presented at the October 6, 2015 Heritage Advisory Committee meeting for the purposes of ordering the commemorative plaque. Staff requested input from the commit-
tee,” wrote Hogg in an email to Jeff and Rebecca Jordan, who resided in the home for about 35 years. “One committee member provided information regarding the lands before the dwelling was constructed. The committee did not provide information directly pertaining to the house. The staff research noted above was therefore used. Calling a story published in another publication last week “completely misleading, revisionist history, and extremely upsetting to me and my family”, Catherine Bingle Gonnson – a GHAC committee member – said in an email to town officials
that they missed the mark entirely. Noting that she missed the October GHAC meeting where this home was on the agenda, Gonnson said the house that stands today could not have been the home of its namesake because that home burned to the ground in 1920
and the family moved to Patton Street. Other members of GHAC have also voiced concern with the Town’s process. Noted Grimsby historian Dorothy Turcotte said it was an “embarrassment” that the Jordan family was eradicated from the home’s history.

MSC Monica aground in St. Lawrence The large container carrier MSC Monica ran aground in the St. Lawrence on Jan. 23, 2016. The ship stranded near Deschaillons, QC due to a rudder problem at about 8 a.m. The accident occcurred 190 kms northeast of Montreal between Trois Rivieres and Quebec

While Bill kept Beamsville on the hockey map for may years during his NHL career, his daughter now carries the torch. The tradition continues. Dissension in the heritage ranks Now this may be hard for some of you to believe, but I think I have run out of things to say where the Town of Grimsby, bio-mania and general administrative bungling are concerned. Issues have persisted for so long, and there have been so many, it has all really just run together and come across as one long, painful scratching of fingernails across a dusty old chalkboard. Not fun to read about every week. Not fun to think about every week. And not fun to write about every week...but I could, and sometimes I must. Case in point, this latest shmozzle with the dedication of a property at 270 Main St. W., a home about 100 years in age, historically speaking not as storied as some others in town, but it has its place. The Town through a nice little PR ceremony the other day, somehow I missed the invite...can’t imagine why...but the resulting exposure touched off a little firestorm in the history buff set in town. Aside from leaving out one family who called the place home for more than one-third of its existence, the home seems to have been named for a women who never lived there at home purported on the newly minted plaque. Grimsby Heritage Advisory Committee member Catherine Bingle Gonnsen said in an email Monday the whole history unveiled last week is incorrect.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT Leaving out some of the back story, the simplest comment proving her point was, “Attached hereto is his obituary I found online which I think you all may find interesting to read. Please note that it says that the Hare/ Clark family lived in a house on Main St. West of Kerman Ave. that burned to the ground in 1920 necessitating their move to Patton St. where Dr. Clark died.” “The house that stands today cannot and clearly is not the Olivia Hare house built in 1910! The Hare/Clark house burned in 1920 (23 years before Dr. Clark’s death referred to in his obit) necessitating the family move to Patton St.” So enough about that. The other side issue of all this is the history of the Jordan family, who spent a lot of time and money preserving the home in recent decades, have been, somehow, left completely out of the home’s story. Gee, could that possibly have anything to do with the Town being
cheesed at the Jordans, to whom they lost a massive Ontario Municipal Board decision to last year costing the town hundreds of thousands of dollars in settlement and legal fees combined? Hmmm, let me think about that. It was interesting to note, while speaking with Barrie Coutts two weeks ago he carefully noted he did not get much interest from the Town of Grimsby and was just plain afraid of dealing with the province (after seeing how some other donated properties were treated) when looking for options with Nelles Manor. Several people have popped in over the last week to note the dissension in the heritage community right now when it comes to dealing with the Town. While I am not directly involved in that area in anyway, some who are say there may be resignations from the board over how things are being handled of late. One thing is certain here. Council can blow millions at hydro - the white elephant co-gen on town hall’s front lawn and the bio-methane producer, and on cost-overruns like the town hall rebuild, but if they mess up the one thing this community has in spades, being heritage, watch out. You don’t want to mess with history buffs. They take their heritage very seriously, and they need to because it is vital. To get where you are going, you have to understand where you have been.
