Hamilton’s loss is Lincoln’s gain Town of Lincoln hires new CAO, Mike Kirkopoulos took his new post Monday By Mike Williscraft NewsNow For nearly two decades Mike Kirkopoulos served the City of Hamilton, most recently as director of communications and inter-governmental affairs. He has developed a track record as a team builder with an acumen for developing a positive culture. He has also gained invaluable experience in dealing with Queen’s Park and key files such as GO Tran-

sit and LRT (light rail transit). As of Monday, Dec. 10, Kirkopoulos brings his skills to the Town of Lincoln as the municipality’s new chief administrative officer. “I’m the kind of guy who looks for solutions. When people deal with government they get used to getting a ‘no’ right away,” said Kirkopoulos. “The answer may still be no, but I will review and assess possible solutions first.”

Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton says Kirkopoulos’s varied background and strength in communications make him an excellent fit for the municipality as it pushes ahead with its key priorities. “Lincoln Council welcomes him and is confident with its selection which zeroed in on his broad general competencies across the municipal spectrum and, specifically, his abilities in community communication,

Are you ready to “think outside the bank”? Last week, the Federal Government announced that there will be an increase to the minimum Downpayment requirements for homes priced at more than $500,000. This new regulation will come into effect in early 2016. Under current regulation, the minimum Downpayment requirement for homes priced up to $1,000,000 is just five percent. The new legislation will require a ten percent downpayment on any amount over $500,000. For example, if you are purchasing a home for $700,000 then your minimum Downpayment is as follows: - a 5% Downpayment on the initial $500,000

= $25,000

AND - a 10% Downpayment on the remaining balance of the Purchase Price ($200,000)

= $20,000

EQUALS the Total Downpayment requirement

= $45,000

Under current legislation, the minimum Downpayment requirement is just 5% on the entire purchase price, which equals $35,000. So, in this example, a Purchaser will be required to have an additional $10,000 saved for the Downpayment, once the new regulation takes effect.

Vineland church opens its doors to refugees By Mike Williscraft NewsNow When the opporunity to aid Syrian refugees materialized, the congregation at The First Mennonite Church in Vineland reacted quickly. “Once we saw an opportunity to participate, a few individuals in our church pitched the idea and the rest of our church quickly embraced the initiative,” said pastor Chris Hutton. “We have primarily worked with Mennonite Central Committee on all of the details around transportation, paperwork, etc.” The support was an easy sell to the congregation as many of them know first-hand what being a refugee can be like. “Our congregation is made up of a lot of people descended from both Russian Mennonite refugees who came to Canada throughout the 20th century and Swiss Mennonites who worked

to bring those Russian Mennonite refugees to Canada,” noted Rev. Hutton. “So there is a long and rich history of refugee sponsorship in this community. As a result, we were immediately very excited about helping something such as the Syrian refugee crisis.” The exact date of the family’s arrival has not been established yet, but that does not mean plans for them are not moving. They could arrive any day. An apartment has been arranged in St. Catharines, with the federal government assisting with rent payments. “Our church collected donations for household needs - furniture, appliances, etc.,” said Rev. Hutton. “The good news is that we have a home fully prepared for them whenever they arrive; and we can work on everything else from there.”

Cottage - West Niagara’s inhome palliative care service was housed in a mobile home trailer adjacent to West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Five years ago, when the trailer had been outgrown, Rose Cottage moved and set up shop in office space at Lincoln Park Retirement Residence. Now, the organization is seeking a new home. “We new the move was coming but we have been given three months notice to free up our current space,” said Sherry

“In terms of timing, we could be ready to move tomorrow.” Their need is for lockable office space – for confidentiality – with room for conducting meetings. “We are a very active group with nearly 180 volunteers who put in about 8,500 hours per year in client visits,” said Cain. The group would need access to any office space at different hours as they host meetings in the evenings from time to time. Twenty two members of the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club spent most of Saturday, Dec. 5 observing waterfowl and other water birds along the shores of western Lake Ontario. The total count for the day was just shy of 70,000 birds. What makes this particular count really interesting, said Bruce Mackenzie, director, bird study group, is that over 57,000 of these birds were long tailed ducks. Long tailed ducks nest in the Arctic and many of them reside on the lower Great Lakes during the winter. They are diving ducks and feed on invertebrates and especially zebra mussels during the winter months. This species is one of the deepest diving ducks with feeding being recorded at depths exceeding

go ahead two things would happen: 1 – No new lands would become accessible that are not already serviced by the present road system and great costs would be incurred monetarily and environmentally. 2 – The proposed extension would take the road through the most significant woodlot on the Lake Ontario Plain in Niagara. The biodiversity of trees in our woodlot, their age, many exceeding 250 years, and the sheer number of large trees in the 22 acres raises the importance of this woodlot to being Provincially Significant. The woodlot is in the Greenbelt and irreparable harm would be done to the significance of the woodlot if a major arterial road was pushed through it. We have been working on the Save the Wood Lot project since May of 2014. We have hosted two open houses to our woodlot and will be inviting

the public out again in the spring. The Region originally proposed an Environmental Assessment on the proposed road extension in May 2014 but has since shelved the idea until after the Greenbelt Review is completed. The review has now been released. It strongly emphasises the protection of natural heritage features and agricultural lands in the Greenbelt. We are anxiously awaiting the Province’s final position on the Greenbelt which is to be announced by June 2016. We ask all people in Town who are concerned about the trees in town and its natural heritage features and the future of peach trees in Grimsby to follow Save the Wood Lot on our facebook page or google Save the Wood Lot Grimsby or call us at 905-945-5351. Emsmoon took out bridge The former Seaway trader Emsmoon departed Papenburg, Germany, in the early evening hours of Dec. 3, 2015. The 111.75m-long ship headed down the Ems River for the sea and neither the pilot nor the ship’s captain noticed, in the dark, that the railway bridge near Weener, Germany, had not opened as it should. The vessel ploughed

Shipwreck into the structure demolishing the centre span cutting off an important cross-river access. While no one was hurt, the ship was damaged and the railway bridge may be out of commission for a year or more until it can be replaced. Local officials continue to investigate the accident but

there is no suspicion that alcohol was a factor. Damage was estimated at 10 million euros. Emsmoon was completed at Leer, Germany, on Dec. 14, 2000, and sailed as Morgenstond III until being sold and renamed Emsmoon in November 2005. It came to the Seaway in 2006 and has been registered in Antigua and Barbuda.

Trees important: don’t forget heritage homes Dear Editor, I just read your comments about reforestation and Grimsby’s character. I agree with you; however, I believe that you have picked one target and completely ignored the elephant on the Burgess property. I have walked past this property almost daily and almost never noticed a woodlot. I did see an overgrown field bordered by a few trees. What I have not failed to notice is a derelict house that a developer has been allowed to let fall apart over the years instead of forcing them to restore it to it’s former beauty. This house could be and should be a reflection of the homes that are the character of our town. If the developer of the field is the same as that of the house, he should be forced to restore it before work is started on the townhouses. This house deserves to be priority. On Friday, December 11, 2015, at the age of 62, Gerry passed away peacefully, surrounded by her adoring family. Gerry is survived by her soulmate and loving husband of 44 years, Eric. She will be sadly missed by her son Christopher, wife Jamie and Nana’s little man, grandson Colten, and her cherished daughter Jenna. Gerry was born to Alice and the late Gerald Carroll, in Curling Newfoundland. She is survived by her siblings David and Debbie, Gary, Bernard, Sharon, Linda and Dave, Robert and Michelle. She was predeceased by siblings Donald and Loretta. Gerry will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and all her extended family. Gerry was Co-founder of Ericway Tire. She cherished Lincoln for the opportunity to raise her family in a caring and loving community. Gerry loved a good book, she loved to travel with Eric, but was most content in the peace and serenity of her Cabin in Muskoka. Gerry had a kind and generous spirit, and strong commitment to her community in Niagara. Visitation will be held at Tallman Funeral Home – 3277 King Street, Vineland – on Thursday December 17th from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. Celebration of Life will be held at Tallman Funeral Home on Friday December 18th at 1:30 pm.
