Up Front Grimsby parade this Saturday Grimsby’s Santa Claus Parade will roll through downtown this Saturday, Dec. 3, starting at 5:15 p.m. The parade starts on Livingston Avenue at town hall, moving east to Ontario Street, where it makes a lefthand turn.

Seniors choir concert set The Grimsby Seniors’ Choir will present its annual concert, “Christmas Wishes”, on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 7 pm, at Trinity United Church, Grimsby. Minimum donation of $5 will aid The Brandee Elliott Education Projects.

Holland foray nets prospects By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Any business transaction has several components, not the least of which are initial contact, striking an agreement and closing. The Town of Lincoln has done a good portion of the first part when it sent a contingent to Holland last month as part of a trade mission. “Now we need to close some those deals,” said CAO Mike Kirkopoulos. Kirkopoulos said Lincoln’s trade

mission was well-timed with several major trade shows set to coincide with the trip. As well, assitance from Senator Peter Harder in arranging key appointments also helped. With an eye to expanding greenhouse and manufacturing sectors on vacant properties as well as retaining and growing existing businesses, the venture was to create new relationships. “And we did that. We have two strong leads, which could close in an 18-month window, with another po-

tentially imminent,” said Kirkopoulos. Among those in the Lincoln group was Mayor Sandra Easton, Coun. Rob Foster and Coun. Dave Thompson as well as other local business operators and officials. “We need to not be afraid to look outside our Lincoln borders. Niagara, as a whole has a lot to offer,” said Kirkopoulos said in comparing his municipality to the structure Holland uses to foster growth in innovation and business.

Attention all First-time Home Buyers! Busy weekend greets Rotaryâ€™s Fantasy of Trees opening Grimsby Museum, home to Grimsby Rotary Clubâ€™s Fantasy of Trees, was a busy place last weekend. â€œWe had an excellent kickoff weekend for the Fantasy of Trees. Visitors of all ages streamed to the museum in record numbers to view the start of our 17th annual fundraiser,â€? said event chair Roger Bradley. Working in tandem with other events - the town/DIA Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday night and the museumâ€™s

two-day craft show - helped boost numbers, Bradley added. The event opens daily at noon, Closing is 5 pm daily, except on Wednesday and Thursday when itâ€™s 7 p.m. This coming weekend, Dec. 3-4, Santa will visitÂ from 1-3 pm. Â Kidsâ€™ activities are planned for the same times. Sunday Dec. 11, raffle sales will stop at 4:00 PM in preparation for the lottery draws. The event runs until Dec. 11 when all raffle draws will be done.

Hors d’oeuvres from Nancy’s Kitchen ANTIPASTO INGREDIENTS • 1 cup olive oil • 1 lge cauliflower, cut into bite-size pieces • 2 large green peppers, chopped • 2-10-1/2 oz cans sliced ripe black olives, drained & chopped • 16 oz jar green olives with pimento, chopped • 2-13 oz jars pickled onions, chopped • 2-10 oz cans mush-

room stems & pieces • 4 oz jar pimento, chopped • 48 oz jar mixed pickles, chopped • 2-48 oz bottles ketchup • 15 oz bottle Hot ketchup (can use Tabasco to taste if you can’t find this here) • 2-2 oz cans anchovies, drained and chopped (optional) •3 cans solid white

tuna, drained and flaked •3 cans small shrimp, drained or 1 pkg frozen baby shrimp, defrosted DIRECTIONS Put all ingredients, except the fish and shrimp, into a large dutch oven. Bring to a boil then simmer for 20 minutes, stirring often. Pour boiler water over all the fish to rinse. Drain and add

to mixture. Gently stir and simmer for another 10 minutes. Pour into hot sterilized mason jars and seal. Store in a cool, dry place until Christmas. Serve with crackers. Note: this is great to make ahead for your buffet table and also to give as a hostess gift. SAUSAGE PATE INGREDIENTS • 2 eggs • 1/2 tsp marjoram • 3 medium onions,

chopped fine • 1/2 cup chopped parsley • 1/2 cup marmalade jam • 1 cup fine breadcrumbs • 2 lbs pork sausage meat • 1/4 tsp dried sage • Salt and pepper, pinch of each DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350. Grease large loaf pan or angel food tin and line with wax paper.

Mix eggs and marmalade and seasonings. Add rest of ingredients. Press into prepared pan. Lay a sheet of foil loosely over pan. Bake 1 hour, pour off fat and bake an additional 30-45 minutes more or until cooked through. Let set for 5 minutes then slice and serve. We serve this delicious appetizer over crackers or toasted baguette with a hot pepper jelly on top.

Freeze urban boundaries: reader Dear Editor, Now is the time to protect at-risk farmland in Ontario for good. Collectively, we in the agricultural sector call on the province to freeze all urban expansion and introduce firm, permanent municipal growth boundaries in the Greater Golden Horseshoe to prevent the region’s remaining farmland from being paved over and additional farming communities from being displaced. It’s clear that more land for urban development in the region is not needed, with an excess of 25 years’ worth of farmland already designated by municipalities to accommodate growth in both urban and rural settlement areas (Neptis Foundation, 2015). An area of prime farmland 1.5 times the size of the City of Toronto is in the process of being rapidly converted to housing subdivisions, warehouses and strip malls. The proposed changes to the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and Greenbelt Plan fail

to protect the majority of our farmers and farmlands from ongoing and poorly-planned urban sprawl. Maintaining policy that enables status quo sprawl makes it difficult to see a future for local food and farming in the region, despite the great economic contributions of the Greater Golden Horseshoe’s food and farming sector. Not just home to the best farmland in Canada, the Greater Golden Horseshoe is home to one of North America’s largest agricultural and agri-food industry clusters, with a unique diversity of primary farm production, food processing, food service, food distribution and retail that represents the fastest growing employment sector in Ontario and generates $12.3 billion in annual economic activity. The Greenbelt protects some of Ontario’s countryside, but there are hundreds of thousands of acres that continue to be at-risk and need protection now. We are at a unique moment in history

where there is an opportunity to enact meaningful limits on urban expansion, plan for healthier urban and rural communities, protect our irreplaceable agricultural land resources, and sustain a vibrant and prosperous agri-food economy in the Greater Golden Horseshoe for generations to come. With an outpouring of public support for a larger provincial role in establishing firm urban boundaries and protecting agricultural land during the Coordinated Land Use Planning Review, now is the time for the province to demonstrate bold leadership to protect agricultural land and farming communities by implementing fixed, permanent urban boundaries on all urban and rural settlement areas in the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Let’s work together to stop urban sprawl, protect farmland forever, support our farmers and create a secure future for farming in Ontario. Grimsby council should heed legislation Dear Editor, I just wanted to say thank you for reporting on these disturbing issues with the Town of Grimsby Council going into closed door sessions. Although council is trying to put the blame on legal council’s advice, one only has to go to the first page of the Municipal councillors guide 2010 (attached). Ald. Dave Kadwell had the only voice of reason in the bunch. And read section 224 of the municipal act which states the following. Role of Council Section 224 of the Municipal Act, 2001 is a good start-

Councilâ€™s antics same over time: reader Windmill Construction Dear Editor, It always amazes me how much money Grimsby town council blows away each year without seeming to care. You seem to be the only newspaper that cares enough about Grimsby to bring it to the attention of the citizens of Grimsby. The honesty and transparency promise from our mayor was just idle words. The town council hasnâ€™t changed much in all the years

I have lived in Grimsby. The names sometimes change but the frittering away of the taxpayers money with abandonment is seemingly a pattern that is rooted in each council.Â As you may know, IÂ have been trying for years to convince the town council to install the chimes and music feature to the Town Clock in the downtown for a sum of around $15,000 in todayâ€™s dollars. Alas, to no avail. The Town and DIA have ignored

what is a perfect way to substantially bolster tourism town. It is no ordinary music feature. It would add a lot of value by having music in the downtown area to suit every occasion.....but perhaps you need to be elected mayor first to put some common sense onto the council and show them how to successfully run the citizens of Grimsbyâ€™s business that is the Town of Grimsby. Developers win again: reader Dear Editor, The purpose of this letter is to make Grimsby residents aware of the efforts made by a resident Appellant Group’s appeal to the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board) of multiple bylaw zoning variances approved for the vacant Nelles Estates properties at 50 & 52 Dorchester Drive in March 2016 by the Town of Grimsby’s COA (Committee of Adjustment). Hopefully this experience will at least have rendered some “lessons learned” to the broader community. This Appellant Group, along with many other concerned taxpayers, attended a full-day hearing at town hall on July 28 to contest the 14 variances granted to the lots at 50 & 52 Dorchester Drive. At that meeting, a second independent group also presented a petition of 90 neighbouring residents opposed to the variances, asking for their overturn. Unsurprisingly, the London, ON origined developers presented their case to the OMB chair using Toronto-based legal counsel and professional planner on why the variances granted by Grimsby’s COA should be upheld. Oct. 31 the OMB upheld the Town of Grimsby’s appointed COA’s granting of 14 variances of Grimsby’s Zoning Bylaw #14-45. This decision now allows the development

of two grossly oversized homes of 5 - 7000 sq. ft. on the two smallest lots in the immediate neighbourhood and last remaining vacant escarpment lots located at 50 & 52 Dorchester Drive. Although zoned RD 1.15 which mandates a 15% total lot coverage, the proposed homes will occupy 37.5% and 41.3% respectively as well as being an average of three metres above the allowed maximum height. The OMB’s decision was based upon the “context” of the development stating that they had no jurisdiction to overturn the decisions of the town’s COA, an appointed and apparently unaccountable body which followed the exact recommendation of the Town’s Planning Department. Apparently both the OMB and the Town’s Planning Department care nothing for the numbers as specified by Bylaw #14-45 let alone the intent of the Town’s Official Plan. One should ask why the Town spent $225,000 of taxpayers’ money contracting the third party writing of the both its Official Plan and Bylaw #14-45 if the Town’s own planning staff routinely ignore both. And now, Council’s approval of a $50,000 “neighbourhood study” of the north side of Main Street East from Nelles Road to the Hospital

ground’s edge when there is plainly only one property that can be developed. No doubt this study will “justify” another large deviation from our zoning bylaws and Official Plan. Unfortunately, for residents of Nelles Estates, this is a done deal. The developers will undoubtedly waste little time getting their shovels in the ground. The Appellant Group has been advised by the OMB that once a decision has been made, unless there has been an error in the law, no further appeal will be heard. However, the Ontario Ombudsmen’s Office has been contacted and a complaint registered contending both the method of public notice as well as the requirements of the RD 1.15 zoning were either missing or in error in the Town’s Planning Department’s public documents. These flawed documents directly influenced the COA’s acceptance of the 14 “minor” variances. So, what are the “lessons learned” as previously stated? 1. Pay attention to all public meeting notices particularly Planning and COA Public Meetings, signage posted on potential building sites, newspaper notices etc. Attend the meetings and voice your opinions. Use your knowledge of the Official Plan and Bylaw #14-45 to challenge objectionable planning bylaw amendments and variance applications early so that they don’t gain acceptance. You’ll get no satisfaction in attempting to overturn them from the OMB. 5. Talk to your neighbours. It’s amazing how little information of public meetings becomes commonly known until

it’s too late to challenge. 6. Know what your current Council Representatives stand for; do they understand the desire of most of us to maintain the character of Grimsby? Are they prepared to challenge over development? 7. Call, write, email your Council representatives and the Mayor to voice your concerns. 8. Push your Council Representatives to amend Bylaw #14-45 to require written notice of pending public COA meetings be mandated from the current inadequate minimum of 60 m (200 ft.) mailing perimeter as required by the Ontario Planning Act to a more realistic figure of 150 m (500 ft.). 9. Representatives to require that COA members demonstrate their knowledge of the Town’s Official Plan and Bylaw #14-45 with some quantifiable testing so that they will be able to accurately apply the intent and letter of our law to all decisions. They are not supposed to be the Planning Department’s “rubber stamp” of questionable development. 10. Vote! We’re in the middle of our current four-year election cycle.
