Meeting response set up extra GO session The flood of information requests and suggestions made at a public meeting for the GO transit station secondary plan has precipitated an additional meeting being added to the process. Grimsby Council was told Monday night by Ald. Nick DiFlavio, chair of the planning committee that response was so great, it was suggested all information needed to be gleaned, process and presented again at an additional meeting. To save on cost of formal notices, council noted residents would be notified through local media and the Town’s website.

Election rules set in uniform fashion across Niagara The 2018 municipal election is only 10 months away, with procedural changes coming that both candidates and voters need to know about. For the first time, Niagara residents will cast a ballot to directly elect the Niagara regional chair. Previously the role of regional chair was voted on solely by members of regional council, but starting in 2018 nominees for the position will be included on each municipal ballot in Niagara. Individuals looking to run in the 2018 municipal and school board election are advised that the nomination period will open
May 1, not Jan. 1 like it has previous years, and closes at 2 p.m. on July 27, 2018. Those looking to run as a candidate for mayor of their municipality, Niagara regional council or school board trustee must file their nomination papers with the Office of the Clerk, at their Town Hall. Individuals looking to run for regional chair must file their nomination papers with the Office of the Regional Clerk at the Niagara Regional Headquarters, located at 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way. The 2018 municipal and school board election is set for Monday, Oct. 22, 2018.

Lincoln approves 2.8% tax hike Lincoln council approved a 2.84 per cent tax increase at its regular meeting Monday night. The increase translates to a $34.84 per year increase for every $100,000 value on a property’s assessment. Lincoln is the fourth fastest growing municipality in Niagara at a 5.9 per cent growth increase since 2011, but remains to be the third most affordable municipality in Niagara. “This term of Council set forth long-term budget planning, beyond our four-year term. The 2018 budget continues to demonstrate the importance of long-term sustainability in our community, while balancing growth demands and affordability,” said Mayor Sandra Easton. The approved budget serves to make an investment in our communities to support growth and deliver quality services to residents, including: • Parks, recreational facility enhancements, beautification, and improvements to public amenities – Development of a parks and facilities master plan to determine the long-term needs of

Nancy helps with some creative Christmas sides If you are tired of the same side dishes with your Christmas main then try these. SCALLOPED CORN INGREDIENTS: * 4 cups fresh or frozen corn * 3 eggs, lightly beaten * 1 cup 2% milk * 1 cup crushed saltines (about 30), divided * 3 tbsp melted butter * 1 tbsp sugar * 1 tbsp finely chopped onion * Salt, pepper to taste DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, combine the corn, eggs, milk, 3/4 cup cracker crumbs, butter, sugar, onion, salt and pepper. Mix well. Transfer to a greased 1-1/2 qt baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining crumbs and bake, uncovered at 325 for one hour. HOMESTYLE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE (This is a bit different) INGREDIENTS: • 1-1/2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed • 2 tbsp flour • 1/4 cup flour • 1-1/2 cups milk • 1/2 cup non-fat buttermilk • 1 tbsp dry ranch dressing mix

• Cooking spray • 1 cup French fried onions, crushed • 1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs • 2 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350º. Cook green beans in boiling salted
water to cover for 4-6 minutes, or til tendercrisp. Drain well and pat dry with towels. Melt 2 tbsp butter in large pot over medium heat, whisk in flour until smooth. Cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute. Gradually add milk, cook and whisk until smooth and sauce is thickening.

buttermilk sauce. Place in a 9x13 sprayed baking dish. Combine French fried onion, breadcrumbs and diced tomato. Sprinkle on top of beans. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly. Serve immediately. Makes 8 servings.

BDSS transforms to hallowed halls of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts
Beamsville District Secondary School’s took a magical theme as organizers shape-shfited the gym into a Harry Potter’s Hogwarts. “This Turkey Dinner was one for the record books! I was so proud of my students! All of their hard work and effort resulted in an amazing display of teamwork and musicianship,” said teacher Kathaleen McNeil. The spirit of benevolence Coordinated chaos is part of the fun, but it’s the feelings of generosity and good will that bring out the community every year to sort and pack for the Grimsby Benevolent Fund Christmas Hamper Program. From kids with their par-
ents and grandparents, to local service groups and the hardworking GBF team turning out last Thursday night, it was many hands that filled the boxes and the true spirit of benevolence that filled the air... Volunteers work the line sorting thousands of canned goods and other non-perishables.

Fire claims barn Lincoln Fire was called to a barn fire on Thirty Road North near the lake about 1 p.m. on Saturday. Firefighters battled the blaze for two hours before it was brought under control. Fire officials have not year pinpointed the cause of the fire and estimated of damages has been assessed.

Hesitation costs West Lincoln considerably Dear Editor, Can you believe that West Lincoln signed the Road Use Agreement with Niagara Region Wind Farm (NRWF) in 2014 and they are still negotiating the agreement? If they had simply taken the agreement as is, and had the NRWF fix the roads according to the RUA, and replaced the trees (7,000–10,000 of them) our impacted roads would have been repaired and brought back to “same or better than” condition. As well, our property owners would have had a couple of years growth on the re-

picture totally. I can hardly imagine how much of our already overworked staff’s time has been taken by these negotiations. The township has negotiated a monetary buyout for the road repair and is now is reduced to stretching the money received to repair impacted

Income impact review will take years Dear Editor, Canada tests ‘basic income’ effect on poverty amid lost jobs. What if the headline read “Canada tests ‘low income’ effect on those with adequate and spectacular income and jobs.” It will be a three-year study - part of an experiment to see what effect freezing all assets plus the loss of 75-80 per cent of regular income will have on those of us fortunate enough to be able to go to
sleep each night without the worry of trying to choose whether to buy food or a winter coat or to pay the $50 phone bill or the rent or the $20 school fee for a trip. How people respond will be closely watched. Will it make a difference in terms of education for the kids, better health, job prospects? Remember it will take three years to determine this! Heritage needs to be taken seriously If you wonder why Grimsby Town Council has a reputation for being wholly disconnected from the heritage file in this community, Monday’s council meeting was another addition to a litany of examples. The matter of 314 Main St. E., a storied property which has a history pre-dating the founding of Grimsby has been sold and is slated for another high-density development project. The issue Monday regarded whether the home could be designated a heritage property and protected as a key facet of the community’s history. The point here is not to get into the detail of if it should be or shouldn’t be designated. Grimsby has been without a heritage advisory committee for more than a year, and even that isn’t the point. At issue is a demolition permit was applied for back in July, said staff Monday, and not only is council just getting around to paying attention to this matter, but council members didn’t even realize a permit had been applied for. It’s not like there are 30 such properties and this got lost in the weeds. This is just another example of a disconnected council. M.W.

Moore) Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Grimsby town, Not a creature was stirring, taxpayers wore frowns. Stocking weren’t hung by the chimney, no way; They had to be worn, for hydro residents could not pay. The children were huddled all snug in their beds, While visions of tax increases danced in parents’ heads. Mamma in kerchief and I in my robe, Chatted about the need for a Grimsby Hydro probe. When down Sobie Road there arose such a ruckus, I sprang from my bed to see Santa blow right by us. Away to the neighbours I flew with great zeal, Santa, what gives? What is the deal? The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow, Was pretty but bio stench in the area, WHOA!! When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a speedy sleigh and nose clips for all reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and snappy, I knew in a moment this elf sure wasn’t happy! Comments more rapid than eagles did fly, He huffed and he bellowed as he looked to the sky: The CoGen! The bio! Now Winston Road and mass hirings! On spending! On mismanagement! Gone is heritage. This is tiring! Said the man, Grimsby council is not on the ball. Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! not soon enough.” “West Lincoln and Grimsby councils will be gone, no bluff.” “Even Santa can’t ignore how taxpayers have been treated.” “The voters, oh yes, their punishment will be meted.” A stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, Jolly he seemed but what lies beneath? It was clear he wasn’t happy at the electorate’s plight, But decisions on gifts he didn’t make out of spite. No, this ran deeper, a conundrum for which to be sure. Council changes were needed or I’m not Clement C. Moore. With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head, I knew he was right, NewsNow I had read. He spoke not a word and quickly wrapped up his work, “And I haven’t even mentioned NPCA, Joyner and Quirk!” After packing his gear up the chimney he sprang, From his sleigh was blaring, “Celebrate” by Kool and The Gang. “Iconic” planning needed Dear Editor, The sale of the Casablanca Winery Inn comes as no surprise. The present town mayor and council are hellbent in developing that area to its fullest capacity with no regard for the traffic and social nightmares it will create over time. It was interesting to read comment made by John Mehlenbacher of The Rosseau Group re ‘The town would like to see an iconic building...’ I would suggest the planned building would be more iconoclastic (assailing cherished beliefs). Many people move to Grimsby because of its charm as a small town set on the shore of Lake Ontario. Saturating the west end with highdensity residential properties does not
Letter add but greatly detracts from that small-town environment. This town has steadfastly refused to recognize any means of creating municipal tax revenues other than residential development. It is the method requiring least effort, least creative thinking or innovation on behalf of the town’s mayor and council. Meanwhile, Grimsby has seen overspending, bad planning and choices by the present administration which, unless put to rites at the next municipal election, will result in Grimsby becoming a place to leave- not a place to call home. The 2006 Secondary Plan was approved prior to the implementation of several important planning initiatives including the 2014 Provincial Policy Statement (PPS) and the 2017 Provincial Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (Places to Grow). The PPS speaks to the need to support long-term prosperity and social well-being by planning for strong, sustainable and resilient communities for people of all ages; a clean and healthy environment; and a strong completive economy. The Growth Plan policies speak to the formation and design of compact and complete communities; making efficient use of lands and infrastructure, supporting transit viability; supporting a range and mix of housing; the protection of natural heritage; and the integration of climate change into planning and managing growth.
