Lincoln council approves 2.15% budget hike Mayor’s new Youth Advisory Council a key step in improving programming By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Town of Lincoln has approved a 2.15 per cent budget increase for 2016. At its meeting Monday night, council approved its budget which Mayor Sandra Easton says was developed using a three-year forecast.

“Council was able to match the always challenging choices to the Corporate Priorities and the work plan that was developed by our senior management team and endorsed by council,” said Easton. “The CAO and his team are clear on these priorities expressed by the community

and together we have agreed on the timelines to get the important work done.” Among its decisions, council considered capital investments and divided this category into two main areas: health and safety, as well as quality of life. Regarding health and safety, Easton noted Campden’s fire

station #2 will be completed within the term of council with property acquisition and building design being the two immediate priorities. As well, $2.5 million will be invested in road rehabilitation. “Completing our budget by the end of December allows

Lions Park on Fly Road has also experienced growing pains as demand has skyrocketed, so council has included a plan for that site. “Temporary washroom facilities will be put in place in summer 2016 while a more comprehensive plan is developed to build a

fieldhouse to accommodate an improved canteen, work and storage area for soccer and ball volunteers and space for the Lion’s Club as well as permanent updated washrooms,” said Easton. Design and engineering will continue for a “town-wide museum” located in Jordan. Calling it a “cultural gateway” for Lincoln, Easton said it is council’s goal to complete the museum project within its current term. Fundraising for the project will begin in 2016, with sponsorships as well as federal and provincial grant support key to the project’s success.

Market feel to Winter Winefest Twenty Valley Tourism’s Winter Winefest will take on a whole new feel and look this year, says the organization’s executive director, Kris Smith. The Jan. 15-17 event in the heart of Jordan Village is one of the highlights of the winter season. This year some major changes have been planned, including opening up the vendor area to an outdoor market-style with the performance stage in the middle of the mix. “The main, large tent will be gone,” said Smith. “There will be lots of fire pits and warm-up spots if its chilly, but we’ve been listening to feedback from attendees and bringing things together was a major point.” Live entertainment, speakeasy sessions, lots of food and wine and feature meals prepared by noted chef Lynn Crawford are all part of the mix. The Saturday evening dinner in On The Twenty’s Windows

Room is always a hot ticket and this year is no different with just a handful of tickets left. As well, the Sunday morning brunch is also nearly sold out. Guests can enjoy a five-course dinner paired with premium Twenty Valley VQA wines. Chef Crawford will bring her uberCanadian culinary prowess to create menus which focus on a curated list of wines from Twenty Valley. The Sunday brunch will have similarly paired dishes in a threecourse offering. Outside, the main stage will be rockin’ the crowds with Whitehorse playing Friday night from 6-10:30 p.m. Saturday, the headliner will be The Mandevilles with Kingston’s The Abrams Bros taking over for Sunday. “Again, from feedback, the food offerings will be improved, too more winter-hearty comfort food,” said Smith. Nutcrackers mean a lot My favourite treasured Christmas gift is a set of half a dozen tiny nutcrackers from The Bombay Company. Nutcrackers are known to bring good luck to your family and protect your home.

They were purchased by my father in 2001 when my children were small. He said to display them at Christmas to remember him. He passed away nearly 10 years ago and I display them in our powder room for

guests to view when using our facilities. A tear comes to my eyes whenever I remove them from their original box each December and get them ready to display. When I look at them I think that

Parents’ sacrifice half-century ago still vividly remembered by NewsNow reader My parent’s led simple lives; neither was used to extravagance. Dad was one of 10 children and Mom was adopted. Mom stayed home while Dad worked hard as a clerk. Money was tight. The Christmas I was 12 – more than half a century ago - my parents asked what I wanted for Christmas. What a dilemma: I wanted a transistor radio and a record player. Knowing I could only have one, what should I choose? I decided to ask for the radio. Christmas Day I opened up a beautiful transistor radio in a leather case. I felt so lucky! I spent every spare minute of Christmas Day listening to

CHUM radio station. Boxing Day, I was called to the living room. There stood a large green case. My parents gestured me towards it. Upon inspection, I noticed that the front of the case could fold open and when I did there was this most magnificent turntable! I had been granted both of my wishes! More than 50 years have passed and my parents are gone. But I still remember the way I felt that Christmas when my parents sacrificed so much for my happiness. Thanks Mom and Dad. Merry Christmas! When I was a kid, I was a little brat. I was about four years old when my uncle got me a stuffed animal monkey for Christmas. I hated it so much that I screamed, threw it across the room, and stomped upstairs to throw a hissy fit. Of course, fast forward a few months... And that monkey became my best friend for YEARS. I named him (Diddy) and wherever I went, I made sure to bring him along. I’m 19 now and still have the little guy he’s one of the few stuffed animals I still don’t have the heart to throw away. Four sons went the extra mile for mom’s gift My most treasured Christmas gift came in the year of 1995. That Christmas is just as vivid in my mind today as it was 20 years ago. It all started by the New Release of a Trisha Romance painting called “Silent Night”. It was advertised in the Grimsby paper for sale at the Preservation Gallery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The painting was of a

Victorian House with soft glowing lights in the windows just as evening is approaching. The lane way is lined with pine trees on both sides with car tracks leading up to the house with foot prints in the middle, everything is covered in a soft blanket of snow. I fell in love with the painting. The newspaper was put away and my dream forgotten.

Thoughtful effort a long-lasting memory The year was 1945 and the air was filled with the excitement of Christmas. We lived in Northern Ontario in a very cold and very small apartment unit, consisting of a kitchen in the middle with a room on either side. I was all of seven years and the oldest of four children, one being a new born. Our mother was very ill and not expected to live. Christmas looked bleak, with a sick mother, very few material things and money in short supply. Our father went and gathered up the discarded cuttings of other trees. He bundled them together and hung them up in a corner of the kitchen, near the ceiling, in view of his sick wife. It brought her joy to witness the happiness of her children, that they, too, had a Christmas tree. At 77 years of age, I still feel the warmth of that love. Mary Ann Barich, Grimsby

I’ll mention at this time that we have “four” sons who all had paper routes. The oldest son asked his dad how much would it cost in gas to drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake, his dad gave him an answer and never questioned the reason for asking. The boys had decided that each one would give a portion of money to buy the painting for me for Christmas. They paid a friend to drive our oldest son to the gallery, when he went into the gallery and told the lady he wanted to buy the painting that he had a cheque for it, she

thought he was kidding, she told him that he would have to get it certified. He went to a near by bank and when the tellers heard what he was doing they certified it free of charge. He returned to the gallery and the lady was so surprised to see him again, not only did he buy the painting but also a book about Trisha Romance paintings. That Christmas gift will be cherished forever not because of painting but because of what our four remarkable sons did. I’ll love you forever. Love Mom (Rose Charlton)

I have always loved animals and I must have looked at a plastic deer decoration in the store with longing in my eyes. Always astute, he must have watched. Christmas morning came and Adrian had only one gift to give. While I shopped he had gone to ask Mom if he had enough money for the deer and he had spent ALL his money on me. When we were little Mom and Dad would give us $1 or so to do our Christmas shopping at Zellers (where Giant Tiger is now) in Grimsby. It doesn’t sound like much, but it was a fortune to us. Mapleglen scrapped, no work: Shipwreck By Skip Gillham The retired Canadian bulk carrier Mapleglen departed Montreal under its own power on Sept. 27, 2015, and arrived at Aliaga, Turkey, on Oct. 25. It was run ashore in early November for scrapping. This ship had a Great Lakes connection under three names. It was built at Federal Maas in 1981, became Lake Michigan in 1995 and

As Mapleglen, it settled into the Seaway ore and grain trades but carried its last cargo in December 2014. With new bulk carriers joining the C.S.L. fleet in 2015, there was no

work for Mapleglen. Despite all the cargoes, all the routes, all the different owners and crews, this ship managed to avoid any major problems. All that can be found on the record is a fire at Montreal on March 1, 2009, that left considerable damage in the engineroom but no injuries to any personnel. COLTON TEW vited Grade 10 and 11 students from across Ontario to apply and write an essay on their proposed project. Colton was one of 30 students selected and attended a workshop in Toronto in October. Over the weekend the students were involved in numerous

sessions showing how they can get involved, learn to lead and make a difference to the world. Colton will now be working with a team on his year-long project. He will become involved with the Save the Wood Lot campaign, learn about the natural history and significance of the Irish Grove Wood Lot on Hunter Road to Grimsby and Niagara. He will also plan and implement strategies to work towards preventing the possible extension of Livingston Avenue from going through the woodlot.
