Organized confusion will reign at Trinity United Church tonight as food and toy sorting is done for Grimsby Benevolent Fund’s Christmas Hamper Program. Volunteers can help sort food/toys from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Dec. 13. Changes underway at Grimsby town hall Hydro boards shuffled, live stream capabilities in works for council chambers By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A meeting of the recently shuffled Grimsby Energy Board of directors will be held Friday morning at town hall to approve a series of changes. “We are going to open things up,” said Mayor Jeff Jordan of the processes under which hydro has operated, adding the meeting is not public. Throughout the recent election campaign, Jordan made it a cornerstone of his plat-

form to open up things with the Town’s hydro utility and at town hall. Many changes have been implemented on the various hydro boards, including the replacement of all those no longer on town council. Key among the changes is the resignation of Sean Straughan on the Grimsby Energy Board. He will be replaced by Rob Hattin. Shafee Bacchus will remain as chair of the GE board.

Also with that board, Delight Davoli will replace Bob Bentley as a director; Lianne Vardy will replace Carolyn Mullins and Jim Howden will replace Steve Berry. Jordan noted that some of the electronics are already in place from the town hall renovation, but about $35,000 in new equipment is needed. “This is just one of the changes we’re making but we are far behind other municipalities. The live streaming will put us on a par with other Niagara municipalities,” said Jordan. “We talked about doing this 12-15 years ago when I was on council, but nothing happened.”

Transition committee pushing ahead By Mike Williscraft NewsNow With a third meeting set for tonight (Thursday, Dec. 13), the transition working group seeking a work-around option to a long-term closure of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital operating rooms is pushing ahead. “What the transition working group is doing is really looking at the safety and operating issues at our West Lincoln site until that rebuild can happen,” said Dr. Michael Stacey, executive vice-president, academic and chief medical executive at Hamilton Health Sciences, adding all were “reassured” by Premier Doug Ford’s greenlighting of a rebuild last month. “We’re still working to make sure that that does go ahead.” The committee - comprised of HHS expertise

across all facets of the operation - was struck to seek options to the proposed 27-month closure of the ORs, which would take obstetrics services with it, was announced Oct. 22. The closure, said HHS CEO Rob MacIsaac, is necessitated to bring the ORs up to current standards for the accreditation process. “Within that (the desire for a work-around) one of the objectives is to see how we can do that while keeping the services locally at that site which is clearly what the staff wants and what the community wants,” said Stacey. “It’s really to try and brainstorm all the possible options.” Stacey said it was premature to suggest any specific options, but he noted there is the potential for a solution

which come in less than the $8.7 million projected in the Oct. 22 report. “We’re looking to see if there’s a less costly option that might achieve the goals,” noted Stacey, adding the group of about 15 HHS employees is investing considerable time and effort to seek an alternative. Dr. Mat Noble Wohlgemut, interim site lead, WLMH, who also sits on the committee said the talks continue to progress. “We are continuing to work through options at the working group to maintain services and programs at West Lincoln Memorial until we get to the rebuilt hospital,” said Noble Wohlgemut. “I am hopeful we will find a solution that will work for West Lincoln Memorial and work for the community.”

All clear at WL RIDE Nearly 400 mororists were stopped at RIDE locations in West Lincoln and Thorold Saturday night with no alcohol-related charges laid. Members of the Niagara Regional Police Services Traffic Enforcement Unit with the assistance of members from Uniform Patrol and Auxiliary Officers conducted the spot checks. Throughout the course of the evening and early morning hours, approximately 482 vehicles were stopped and drivers were questioned with regards to alcohol consumption and drug use prior to the operation of their motor vehicles. As a result, two drivers were asked to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. Both drivers registered readings within the legally allowable limit of less than 50

mgs of alcohol. Officers did issue 10 provincial offence notices for various Highway Traffic Act violations ranging from; failing to provide driver’s licence, driving with no insurance, and driving with an expired permit. In an effort to ensure the safety of our residents and the visitors to the Niagara Region, the Police Service would like to remind everyone to drink responsibly and have a plan to arrive home safely. Consider having a designated driver, calling for a taxi or using public transit. Motorists are also reminded that they are required by law to slow down and proceed cautiously when approaching a R.I.D.E. checkpoint or any emergency vehicle stopped on the roadway.

Foster, Earl Gordon (Toby)

Passed away on Monday, December 10, 2018 at Orchard View Apartments, Vineland, in his 93rd year. Toby was born in Jordan Station on June 15, 1926 to parents Lorne and Myrtle. In his youth he was a renowned fastball pitcher, the “Jordan fireballer” by some accounts. He was a fruit farmer until 1985, growing the finest peaches in the region, and in his semi-retirement until the early 2000s, managed the Jordan ballpark and drove the Zamboni in the arena. Anyone who visited Jordan Lions Sports Complex during those years got to know Toby. Toby is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris May Foster and his sons David (Joanne), Wayne (Kathy) and Rob (Leslie). He was a loving Papa to his grandchildren Lorne (Val), Larissa (Bryan), Tamara (Ryan), Alanna, Kara, Tie, and Trent; and to his great grandchildren Graham, Rory, Brooklyn, Noah, and Aubrey. He is predeceased by his sisters Lois, Noreen and Vivian. The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Bonnie and staff at Orchard View Apartments for their loving care of Toby over the past 3 years. Memorial donations may be sent to the Vineland United Mennonite Home. ‘Appeal’ing event

Big Brothers Big Sisters Niagara West hosted its annual Appeal Spiel at Grimsby Curling Club recently. The event was highly successful raising more than $22,000 for BBBS. Among the teams on hand were 1st Beamsville Scouts and leader Roy Caja.

Wheels start turning

Grimsby council is not wasting any time in getting changes and long-anticipated measures in motion after formally taking office Dec. 3. At Monday’s meeting of the Finance and Administration Committee, members approved a motion to pursue the installation of electronics to facilitate live streaming of council meetings. Now it is not like 10,000 people are going to flock to their computers to take in a council session, but at least they will have the option to do so. Any time there is something going on they would like to know more about - a development; a construction project; a new rec program - taxpayers will be conveniently able to tune in and watch council’s deliberations. This has been desperately needed for at least eight years and it won’t come a moment too soon. While this is great news for the community, do not expect the information forthcoming regarding Grimsby Energy et al to be nearly so positive. From all the tidbits I have heard, a guess at all-in costs to date on the biodigester is quite likely over $14 million. Hopefully that thing can generate some revenue next year! M.W.

It is a reasonable theory since there is not a screaming front page headline with enough power behind it to elicit at least one curse word from the most staunch church-going type. But don’t take a seemingly quiet week as an indication things are not bubbling right along under the surface.... because they are. As noted in the bottom left corner of this page, things are churning at Grimsby council....and that’s a good thing. This shmozzle with the Happening at The Forty committee packing it in seemingly on behalf of the community...a lot of cheesed off people with how that was handled - glad to see some of those characters removed from the scene - have been calling with event ideas and looking to get involved in resurrecting that event or doing something brand new. Rest assured, good reader, there will be a summer event in 2019. It is just hard to tell what form and what timing it will take, but something will come together as there is a lot of interest. I have been passing contacts on to Sarah Sweeney at Grimsby Rec Services as they have come in. Very general discussion may lead to a public meeting in January to bring potential volunteers together along with those who have ideas for one or more new events. As noted, it is too early to say where it will go, hence no story, but that will develop. Along that line, as some of the characters are similar, we have the chaos which has been the Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area Board’s annual general meeting. Yikes! That was planned for last

I am going to spare you the details of what has transpired, but needles too say it would be good for all involved if a wholesale change takes place when the AGM goes down in January just as Grimsby council experienced. Time for new blood, new ideas, new processes to be sure. Then there is West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, which is constantly on the minds of many. As one person put it to me this week, “the town seems as though it is just waiting to go off” where the hospital is concerned. I must agree. I see and hear it every day. Virtually everyone I speak to in the normal span of a day - whether walking down the street, going through the grocery store or sitting at my desk - people want to know: A) What was Hamilton Health Sciences thinking? B) Do I think Premier Doug Ford’s promise of a new hospital will come to fruition? C) Is HHS sincere in its desire to help find a work-around for the proposed 27-month closure? My answers: A) No idea. I’ve never seen a promotional ship launched with so many holes in it. I

have yet to understand HHS’s end goal but I must note one thing. When I saw a press release with the name of the board chair on it, Julia Kamula, the notion of straight up cost cutting certainly came into focus for the first time. Kamula earned a reputation as a newspaper publisher steeped in deep cost cutting... and I am describing that as tactfully as possible, believe me. That could mean nothing at all, but it certainly does not benefit Niagara West in any way. B) I believe Ford is sincere. The key is HHS cooperation on this end, meaning do they sincerely want it to happen, because if there is any filibuster at all on this end, it will be a sign HHS simply wants to push things on beyond the next provincial election and they will take their chances a new government comes in. I certainly hope not, but one never knows. C) This is the $8.7 million question. The questions raised about the validity of accreditation concerns as they relate to patient safety are valid. Why the HHS proposed a full 27-month shutdown of the operating rooms in the first place - which would be from the very start of the planning process for the renovation through to completion - is ground zero for concern. It makes no sense on any level. What makes any possible work-around suspect is, if HHS officials actually believed their first offering of a solution to be viable, there is absolutely no way to tell if they would recognize a solid, economical and workable solution for Niagara West if it jumped up off an operating table and slapped them in the face. Lots of platitudes at this point, but let’s get the rubber on the road and solve this.

Bring back Johnston, says reader Dear Editor, Congratulations from an outstanding GrimsBarbarian and a nosey, mouthy BeamsVillan outsider for staying on top of happenings at Grimsby council as evidenced at Grimsby’s recent coronation inauguration. Apparently the swamp wasn’t drained completely. It seems that Mr. Dunstall is acting like a spoiled brat who whines when he doesn’t get his way, sulks, is not cooperative, and pressures his fellow playmate aldermen to work harder. Any hope that Mr. Dunstall will resign? It is unfortunate that Joanne Johnston did not retain her seat, a person who showed integrity as a member of the previous council. Dunstall shows “true colours”, says writer Dear Editor, I am a resident in John Dunstall’s ward. I don’t know how this alderman can now show his face in this town after pulling off this latest stunt.
