Has the community simply resigned itself to the fact Beamsville District Secondary School’s fate is sealed after school board staff recommended it be closed and merged into a Niagara West super school? Those were some of the questions the handful of people at last Thursday’s Accomodation Review Committee (ARC) were asking each other after just over 40 people turned out to hear the District School Board of Niagara’s committee review stats and analysis which lead staff to make such a recommendation. It was the second of three such ARC meetings - South Lincoln
hosted its meeting in November and Grimsby Secondary is set to host its meeting Jan. 26. While SLHS had well over 200 in attendance, BDSS had a crowd that filled about 20 per cent of the chairs set out in the auditorium. Just four people put their names down to speak and two of them mainly addressed the heritage of the building asking that the facade be preserved in the result of closure and possible demolition. In terms of information, the details provided were much the same as presented at SLHS. The meeting started at 6 p.m. with a tour for the committee again, followed by committee conversation but it went much longer with public input not getting started until nearly 8:30 p.m. See ARC, Page 3

Council flips planning committee decision By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Grimsby Town Council voted Monday to allow an Official Plan amendment to allow for a 15-storey - six additional storeys - condo
development at 560 North Service Road. The proposal, by LJM Developments, marked the third time the project came back to the Town, gaining approval after Planning Committee rejected the proposal last week.
In question was the redesign on a project which had already been approved for nine storeys. The developer now wanted to add a “missing portion” to the facility, said consultant See CONDO, Page 5

cerns with the plan, all voted in favour of it in the end, except for Ald. Dave Kadwell, who opposed in a recorded vote. This came after considerable discussion and confirmation from developer Liaquat Mian that his company would push the matter to the Ontario Municipal Board if need be. “I am not expecting a ‘no’,” said Mian of a
council vote. “It would be unfortunate if we had to go to the OMB in full force.” Town manager Derik Brandt said the Town’s prospects at OMB were not good. “It would cost $30,000-$50,000 and it would not be our expectation we would win,” said Brandt. “We would spend the money and we would lose.”

Lincoln passes 6.95% 2017 budget increase The Town of Lincoln’s 2017 budget was passed at Monday with a 6.95 per cent increase. The budget includes: • Beautification, parks and improvements to public amenities; • Continual improvements in public realm spaces and future planning; • Road maintenance and repairs; • Improvements to emergency services vehicles and equipment; • Long-term investment in water and wastewater infrastructure; • Upgrades to recreational facilities, and; • Quality service de-
livery. The overall increase on the residential tax bill will be 3.22 per cent and includes portions for services of the Town, Niagara Region and school boards. Based on a property assessment of $330,000, households will see increases of: • $94.96 per year, or • $7.91 per month, or • $1.83 per week, or • $0.26 per day “In the development of this budget, the Town kept taxpayer affordability front and centre, while addressing council’s approved priorities, investing in hard and soft in-
frastructure, meeting legislative obligations, and absorbing inflationary pressures,” said Mayor Sandra Easton. Lincoln CAO Mike Kirkopoulos said council planned for the future in assessing its needs.“Council demonstrated long-term vision in approving this year’s budget,” said Kirkopoulos. “2017 is going to be a full, busy year with many capital and operational projects benefiting the community”. To say my grandmother lived a hard life is an epic understatement. Losing her own mother as a young girl, raised in an abusive home, shouldering responsibilities beyond her age and marrying young was her journey in a nutshell before her own family came along. Roscita May was the family pride and joy when she was born; a smaller version of grandma with cascading ringlet hair who would become sister to three younger brothers before her seventh birthday. As if life hadn’t been cruel enough, Roscita wouldn’t live to see seven. Fast forward to my
generation, and I am the only girl born from her sea of boys; that is until our own daughter was born on a snowy December evening 19 years ago. One can only imagine how long and hard a woman of faith prayed for a girl prior to her birth, but her wish was granted when Emily Roscita May was placed in her arms late at night on Christmas Eve in 1997. In grandma’s own words, “This gift don’t need no unwrapping”. Our family’s matriarch lived to cherish her own daughter’s namesake for seven short months after that Christmas Eve. At some point before her passing, grandma updated her prepaid funeral to include this little baby girl who brought her so much joy in such a short time. I only learned what that was at her funeral when I saw the smallest bouquet of mini roses laid on her chest with a ribbon that read, “Great-Grandmother”. Jeannine VanderBeek Smithville

Phase 2 transit study gets council green light With a warning of added tax dollars, Grimsby council voted to move on to Phase 2 of its transit investigation study at its regular meeting on Monday. “We must remind the public that transit is expensive and it is going to have an impact on your taxes,” said Ald. Carolyn Mullins, chair of the Admin & Finance Committee. Mullins made the comment
after consultant Dennis Kar confirmed respondents to an in-depth survey cited $25 as an appropriate level they would commit to funding a transportation system. Kar said Monday a system would cost in the $50-$75 range to get up and running. The particulars on routes, timing, fares and preferred method of operating a new system are to be worked

Council looks forward to Winston Road renewal While fiscal challenges abound for Grimsby Town Council, one thing they all agree on is their excitement in seeing part of Winston Road redeveloped. At Monday’s meeting of council, several alderman noted components of what they believe will be a winning for-
mula for the rapidly developing area. “It going to have a ‘wow’ factor,” said Ald. Steve Berry in agreeing wtih Ald. Joanne Johnston’s assessment. He noted many design features including planters along a long median between Win-
ston road and Windward Drive; recycling bins, benches, and bike friendly lanes among other features which should give the area a winning formula. He noted the cost the work, planned for early 2017, is $5.6 million.

Grimsby withholds NPCA audit request Grimsby Town Council shunned the opportunity to join other Niagara municipalities calling for a third party audit of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. At its regular meeting on Monday, Ald. Dave Kadwell spoke to an item in council’s correspondence package which included letters from Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Port Colborne and Wainfleet which all voted in support of an audit. Calling the move “premature”, Mayor Bob Bentley said NPCA is

governed by the province and correspondence should be directed there. “It is not our jurisdiction,” he said, referring the matter to Reg. Coun. Tony Quirk, who was at the meeting, for comment. Quirk agreed with Bentley’s assessment that it was not a matter for municipalities to be dealing with based on jurisdiction and added, “The details in question don’t lend themselves to a forensic audit.” Council accepted the request for information with no further action.

Until the death of my grandparents they all began like this.... 4:30 a.m. or close to that I’d slip into my grandparents apartment across from my bedroom. You see, back then, we shared the same house in
downtown Smithville. Gram Etta would say, “Joanne, it’s way too early; climb into bed with me for a while”. I never minded. She had a beautiful large feather tick bed, cozy and soft. My stay was not long because I’d keep asking when could we go open presents. She’d send me to Grandpa Harmon’s room, where he’d say... “Joanne, it’s too early; climb into bed...another comfy one but, alas, my uneasiness had him shortly saying, “ok, let’s get up”. Then it was awaken my two sisters and head downstairs to awaken our parents. I’ll

never forget the year of the ugly silver/aluminum tree. That lasted one Christmas, but what a silly creation that was. The best Christmas gift I recall was a Polly Anna Doll. Oh, I adored her. We’d eat breakfast, play with toys, dress for worship, and head to Snyder Road, St.Ann’s for supper – my mom’s side of the family, the farming grandparents, and our wonderful cousins. A real Christmas tree, always, slightly out of shape but freshly cut by Grandpa Hugh & Uncle Jim. Oh, the smell of that tree! I can’t pick just one Christmas; thanks for the walk

Turkey is the centrepiece of a lot of holiday dinners maybe ham or your house - but what goes with it? Here are some ideas. GRUYERE SCALLOPED POTATOES INGREDIENTS • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 2-1/2 cups Half & Half cream • 6 baking potatoes, peeled • 2 tbsp flour • 3 cups grated gruyere cheese • Salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Stir garlic into cream and set aside. Slice potatoes into paper-thin rounds and toss with flour. Arrange half the potatoes in a 9x13” glass baking dish. Sprinkle with half of the cheese; pour half the cream mixture

over top. Sprinkle with salt & pepper. Repeat this layer once. Cover and bake at 325 degrees for one hour. Remove foil and continue baking for another 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. NIFTY CARROTS INGREDIENTS • 5-6 large carrots, peeled, sliced and cooked until tendercrisp (reserve cooking water) • 1/4 cup reserved carrot water • 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 1/4 cup sour cream • 2 tbsp finely chopped onion
• 1 tbsp horseradish • 1 tbsp butter, melted • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs • Salt & pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Place cooked carrots in a shallow casserole. Combine reserved
carrot water, mayonnaise, sour cream, onion, horseradish, salt and pepper and pour over carrots. Combine butter and breadcrumbs and sprinkle over top. Bake at 375 for 30 minutes.

and pepper. Seal bag and shake to coat. Arrange vegetables in a single layer in two baking pans coated with cooking spray (or on parchment lined sheets). Bake, uncovered, at 425 degrees for 25 minutes, stirring once. Drizzle with maple syrup and bake another 20-25 minutes longer or until vegetables are tender, stirring once. Serves 10-12.

In 2009, myself, my hubby and our kids packed up our lives in sunny South Africa and headed to Canada - a world unknown to us. There was a lot to learn, like taking your shoes off at the front door to driving on the other side of the road while seated on the
other side of the car. My hubby’s job was on Main Street, Grimsby and our first home in Canada has been in Grimsby. We have loved our new life. A life of no regrets and happiness. ...however there were sad days where we missed our family. Holiday times are always a reminder that we are far away from family. This year though, would be different. With secret messages and phonecalls to my brother in SA (whom I had not seen since we had left) we organized a surprise visit to my parents. My mom was over-
joyed and my Dad could not believe I was there. It was good quality, bonding time with my family. Twenty two hours of flying and I was back at the airport; topped by border patrol and asked, ‘where do you live?’ which I promtly answered “Grimsby”...with a smile I was ushered on. And now my time in Grimsby is coming to an end as our family moves to Manitoulin Island. We will never

David Leonard’s assessment of the 62 Grimsby Phantom Squadron band’s performance at Monday night’s fundraising concert at Mountain Ridge Community Centre. The $1,000-plus raised will go to the Hansen family, in memory of Carolyn Hansen, who died earlier this month. She served as cadets’ Support Committee Chair. “Money will go directly to the family to help pay for medical expenses not covered by OHIP, parking fees, etc,” said Mjr.. Leonard.

Soccer clinic in Smithville The 7th annual Indoor Soccer Training and Skills Program is set for Smithville Christian High School this Jan-Feb. Eight-week indoor soccer training and scrimmaging cost $30. It includes 30 minutesof training and a 30-minute game every week. Parents can take advantage of the children’s fitness tax credit for the registration cost. The program runs Saturdays starting Jan. 14 for ages 5-7 @ 9-10 am; ages 8-10 @ 10-11 am, and; ages 11-14 @ 11 am-noon.
