Fresh off his parade appearance, St. Nick himself will be on hand Saturday, Dec. 12, for West Lincoln Auxiliary’s Breakfast with Santa. From 8 a.m. to noon the hall at the Peach King Centre will be full of Christmas cheer. Cost is $5 pp with a family of five $20.

Grimsby Legion hosts crafters

From 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday Grimsby’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 127 will host its Christmas Bazaar. A wide variety of crafts, personal care products, baked goods and hand-knit items will be available.

Seniors dances this week

Lincoln and Grimsby’s seniors clubs will host their annual Christmas dinner/dances this week. Lincoln’s runs tonight, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln Centre. Cost is $18 pp with prizes and entertainment part of the mix. Grimsby’s event runs Friday night, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Livingston Activity Centre. Live entertainment will be provided by Escapades Trio. Turkey dinner with all the fixings will be served. Cost is $25 for members, $27 for non-members.

Lincoln to host U-18 Swede squad Women to play exhibition game Jan. 4 readying for World Championship By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The Town of Lincoln has been chosen as one of three host communities for an entrant in the women’s U-18 World Hockey Champioship. The Worlds will be hosted in January at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines. In the first week of January leading up to that competition, the Swedish national U-18 women’s squad will make the Fleming Centre their home.

“It is very exctiing. The Town has never been a host facility for this type of event before and we are looking forward to hosting Team Sweden!” said Stephanie Hutchison, Lincoln’s coordinator of sports services. The process actually started back in August when Hockey Canada and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association issued invitations to Niagara communities to act as hosts. Lincoln, Niagara Falls and Port Colborne were chosen.

The team will be at the Fleming Centre from Jan. 3-6 and have an exhibition game scheduled for Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. The opponent has yet to be announced. The practice schedule is: • Jan. 4 - 9-10:30 a.m. • Jan. 5 - 9:30-10:30 a.m. - 4-5:30 p.m. • Jan. 6 - 9-10 a.m. As part of the application process, town officials had to coordinate fitness facilities and food services as well as accomodations for

Grimsby Power GM happy with utility’s performance Grimsby Power general manager Doug Curtiss says recent grades received by the utility place it in excellent standing. Curtiss made a presentation to Grimsby council on Monday night as part of a regular update. The information Curtiss outlined for council was 2014 rating results. He said there are two key areas which are focused on - rates and reliability. “With rates, we are at the lower end of our neighbours’ (rates), overall good shape,” said Curtiss in an interview with NewsNow on Wednesday. “On the reliability side - that’s maintenance of assets and keeping them in good shape: they won’t require anything substantial in terms of investment in the next 10 years.” Because of that, he said the utility is in very good shape.

“Our reliability (one of the categories graded by the Ontario Energy Board) should remain at current levels or even be better,” Curtiss added. He outlined the utility’s strong program of maintenance as key to keeping the asset side of the company in good shape. He said hydro polls are assessed every three years (they have a life expectancy of 50 years), transformers and other equipment is checked regularly and kept in good repair as well. A key item for the future, Curtiss noted, is a focus on improving communication to customers during power outages. “Our customer surveys show us that is something people want,” he said. “We are looking to improve that. It will be a priority, a work in progress, over the next five years.”

By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The first Calgadoc served the Paterson fleet from 1923 into 1937 before it disappeared with all hands off the coast of Newfoundland. The vessel was carrying coal from Sydney to Wabana when it got caught in a storm and overwhelmed. All 19 sailors on board the 78.33m vessel went down with their ship some time on Nov. 1, 1937. Calgadoc had been built at Dumbarton, Scotland, and came to the Great Lakes on completion in May 1910 to carry steel and steel rails for the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay Railway. Originally the Thomas J. Drummond, it returned to the sea for WWI service but later came back to Great Lakes trading for the Canadian government. It was sold to Paterson in 1923 and renamed Calgadoc three years later. During WWII, a Cana-

Become a Marine Rescue Volunteer The Grimsby Auxiliary Marine Rescue Unit is looking for volunteers to serve as Search and Rescue Crew Members

To be a GAMRU crew member you must: 1. Live within 20 minutes of Foran’s Marina in Grimsby. 2. Possess a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. 3. Participate in weekly training from January to October. 4. Be available for Crew rotation of one night a week and one weekend per month from April to October. 5. Participate in fundraising activities. 6. Complete all SAR training (provided by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary) within the specified time frames. In return you will get: 1. Opportunity to serve your community in a unique way. 2. Chance to meet new people with similar interests. 3. Receive Search and Rescue [SAR] training from GAMRU instructors and the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. 4. Crew experience on a fast rescue craft, including GAMRU’s Hurricane 633.

Niagara Region Wind Corporation, now FWRN LP (the “Proponent”), are engaging in a renewable energy project for which a Renewable Energy Approval (“REA”) was issued by the Ministry of the Environment (now the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) on November 21, 2014. Project Description The Project is located within the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet and the Town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario. The Project will consist of 77 wind turbine generators, step-up transformer, electrical collector lines, a transmission line, two transformer substations, turbine access roads and construction staging areas. The Project will have a total maximum nameplate capacity of up to 230 MW. Construction of Underground Transmission Line Infrastructure Installation of underground transmission line infrastructure is expected to begin on December 1, 2015, on the following roads, occurring south to north: • Creek Road (Regional Road 45); • Canborough Road (Regional Road 63); • Port Davidson Road; • South Grimsby Road 5; • Walker Road; and • Mountainview Road. Activities will include asphalt cutting and removal, trench excavation, conduit installation, concrete placement, vault installation, backfill, and compaction and road remediation. These activities are described in detail in the REA technical reports found on the Project website: www.nrwf.ca. Construction activities are expected to last approximately 7 months. Beamsville boy donates contest earning to CCWN Nicholas MacMillan-Fagundes was pretty excited to hear he had been chosen as one of 12 winners in North America of a Canadian National Railway writing contest. “I was super happy,” said the 12-year-old Grade 7 student at Jacob Beam Elementary. MacMillan-Fagundes was named one of the winners of the CN contest where entrants has to write in what Christmas means to them. “The holidays are about spending time with friends and family,” MacMillanFagundes summarized. The 12 winners of the annual contest received $500 which they were to direct to the charity of their choice. His choice? Community Care of West Niagara. “They are local and they do good things,” said MacMillan-Fagundes, who had run a food drive at his school for CCWN in the past.
