In a study which generated 1,000 total submissions, Kar said 83 per cent of residents supported implementing a transportation system. Residents were given ranges between $0 and $100 per household to target what they would find as a suitable contribution to have “skin in the game.” The vast majority, 63 per cent, said $25 per household was suit-
able. The projected cost comes in at about $80 per household, Kar noted. Mayor Bob Bentley asked what fare residents found to be suitable. “We did not ask that question,” noted Kar. While council will consider the committee’s recommendation on Monday, moving on to Phase II - which will refine routes and service levels, was approved.

Joint fire department committee gets approval for new gear For most of 2016 a joint committee of firefighters from Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln have been working together in assessing self-contained breathing apparatus systems. That work culminated in a presentation and approval at Grimsby’s Administration & Finance Committee Monday for new SCBA systems at a cost of $350,000 per department. Each municipality must approve any acquisition and Grimsby has approved the purchase at the committee level. Council will vote on the issue at its regular meeting on Monday night. “We structured it so each department buys their own, but at a common price point. We
used buying power to get the best price possible as each department is at or is reaching its ‘end-of-life’ with their current units,” said Grimsby Fire Chief Mike Cain. “SCBA’s are a device worn by firefighters to provide breathable air in an ‘immediately dangerous-to-life atmosphere’. These are the air packs you see on the backs of firefighters. During interior rescues and firefighting our SCBA is our lifeline.” “The fire services in

LHIN reviews HHS’s WLMH plan Whitnell also cleared up some confusion regarding a $4.9 million grant for infrastructure work on WLMH which is actually three years old. The grant was announced at Christmas 2013 and work - which includes replacing windows and HVAC improvements - has been done ongoing since the summer of 2013. The Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Intergration Network conducted a review of Hamilton Health Sciences future plans for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital yesterday (Wed.). The plan, which was submitted in June, has generated a lot of “back and forth” between the LHIN and HHS staff, said Kurt Whitnell, one of WLMH’s two representatives on the HHS board.

Canada is 150 years old and one thing we can guarantee is that in every one of those 150 years there has been snow,” said gallery curator Rhona Wenger. “To celebrate 150 years of this

“Wish list” is right There was some joking as Monday’s Administration & Finance Committee meeting wrapped up about some of the session’s content representing a ‘Christmas wish list” for staff and the community as a whole, for that matter. It really was. The notion of a local transit system, while many have said has been needed for years, is at the top. Needs and wants are two different things, especially when it comes to taxpayers. With 83 per cent of Grimsby taxpayers who completed a survey saying they want transit in town, the majority of those thought only $25 a year was a fair commitment. Hello? That is one expensive want, folks. It is well over triple that cost based on tax levels of an average home - and that was based on scaled back service with no handicap access vehicles built into the model. This does NOT mean it will be that way. It was just a first brush at things to determine what ballpark things will be in. Well people, it is a very expensive ballpark and if you want it, you better be ready to ante up. M.W.
Not just another cadet concert Monday The 62 Phantom Squadron Cadets are a great group to put your support behind even on a normal day. This coming Monday - or Saturday for that matter won’t be “normal” days. The cadet’s Military Pipe & Drum bands of 62 squadron are teaming up for a special benefit concert in support of the Hansen Family. A great many people know Jens and Carolyn Hansen of Beamsville. Some may not be aware that Carolyn passed away last Wednesday never managing to regain consciousness from an induced coma prescribed to see if she could heal from a “traumatic medical event” while at work back on Nov. 17. I’ve known Carolyn and Jens for several years through various activities and events. More recently I got to know her quite well when she offered to help me with my run at the PC nomination. Anyone trying to get something done can always use another pair of busy hands with high energy and a positive personality behind them, right? That was Carolyn in spades. In announcing Carolyn’s passing, Mjr. David Leonard, Commanding Officer of 62 Phantom Squadron said, “As the days go by so to will the healing from the loss of such a vibrant, good natured lady. Our prayers are extended to the family; Jens, Kristiaan and Liam; may they find peace and strength in the coming days from our thoughts and prayers we extend to them.” Carolyn served as the

Days prior to her taking ill she was sitting at my desk arranging ads to promote the major fundraiser for the organization, their Taste & Buy, which was held at the Mountain Ridge Community Centre (which many will still know as the former St. Marys Hall on Mountain Road). This Saturday, that location will serve as the host of a memorial service and celebration of life for Carolyn. The doors will open for a reception and gathering from 2-3 p.m. The service will begin at 3 p.m. Monday’s concert is set to start 7 p.m. Admission is donation only with proceeds going to the Hansen family. A concession stand will be open at intermission. “The cadets are looking forward to the concert. It should be about two hours in length, playing selections from movies, military marches, Phantom of the Opera, Over the Rainbow, etc. They have been working really hard,” said Mjr. Leonard. As noted...well worth the outing, folks. Deepest condolences to Jens and his sons, Kris-
tiaan and Liam, as well as the entire family from everyone here at the paper. ****** As part of the festive atmosphere at Grimsby’s Administration & Finance Committee meeting on Monday, I was noting that I look forward to giving credit where credit is due with Grimsby council, and any other, really. The chortling from committee members was kinda funny, but I offer these two tidbits. Town clerk Hazel SoadyEaston has had some challenges over the years, but she was right on top of things Monday. She was a speaker on hand to address a possible voting system to be used in 2018’s municipal election. As a subsequent matter was being voted on and Soady-Easton was getting up to leave, she turned to note that she saw only two members of the committee vote on the motion, Mayor Bob Bentley and Ald. John Dunstall. Ald. Dave Kadwell was there but had to leave early, so Chair Steve Berry’s vote was not needed earlier. With a committee of five, they had a quorum, but Soady-Easton noted Berry needed to vote in that instance. She was bang on. They voted again. Great catch! Item #2: the committee’s decision to use $2 million from reserves to offset part of the cost and reduce the debenture needed for the new Fire Station #2 will save taxpayers either $285,000 over 10 years or $505,000 over 15 years, depending on how council opts to pay for the facility. Saving money is good!
