Energy forum hears cost-saving tips By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Key facets of energy conservation, tips on reducing bills and potential electricity alternatives for business operators were all part of a business forum hosted by Lincoln Chamber of Commerce last week. More than 50 business operators ranging from greenhouses to retail
and large industry to trades - were on hand at the Ramada Beacon Harbourside in Jordan. Panelists for the symposium, conducted jointly with the Grimsby and West Lincoln chambers of commerce, included David Arkell of 360 Energy, Steve McGill of Enbridge Gas and Tim Clutterbuck, president of ASW Steel in Welland.
Arkell, whose company’s mandate is to serve clients as a comprehensive and effective energy manager, said his company works witih businesses whose energy expenses range from $500,000-$2 billion. “The energy file is a disaster,” said Arkell, noting that smaller electricity users are “paying the freight”. Youth Zone hosts events for teens Convos Youth Zone, inside Conversations Cafe in Beamsville, will host a series of events this holiday season geared to local teens. Participants can create their own ornament and decorate “The Zone’s” Christ-

Firefighters food drive best ever While Grimsby’s parade had its biggest crowd, the firefighters food drive also set a record for donations on Saturday. “The weather was perfect and the crowd was the biggest we’ve ever seen. We really notice the crowds filling the areas between the start of the parade and Kerman Ave.,” said Jim Bergshoeff, food drive co-chair, who noted cash donations were up as well. “I think that when people come to the parade and forget their bags, they still want to give something. We gladly take it and pass it all on to the GBF.” All proceeds go to the benevolent fund’s hamper program.

travening the Municipal Act. What I would expect from Town council is a reply such as, Sorry we can do better. No, they disagree with the ruling. As I have stated to Mr. DiFlavio in council chambers, councillors are to know and understand the law. The response was that he did not have time to do that and relied on advice from outside council. That advice may be right or wrong but council is responsible for their actions. Here’s the
Letter catch, which is known by all judges and police officers, but is somehow missed by this council. “An illegal act does not justify a legal action.” No matter what your good intentions are you must do it within the confines of the law. Not to do so now puts council above the law that they so swore to uphold. What ever the reason and/or benefit, it was wrong and therefore the outcome or benefit was also wrongly obtained. So after reading the NewsNow articles I am
left with some questions. Will council try and do better? Or, will they hold fast to their statement that the Ombudsman was wrong and will they proceed as they like? Also, over the years, I have attended several council meetings in different towns and it is noteworthy that the town clerk on many occasions instructs council that their actions are out of order. Council doesn’t understand Ombudsman: reader Dear Editor, At the Nov. 26 council meeting, the Ombudsman’s critique of council was accepted and appropriate measures to address them were passed. The Ombudsman’s report wasn’t just a wrap on the knuckles of the mayor and town council. It described the lack of transparency and fiscal integrity that council members are committed to abide by. As clearly stated in our council bylaws and the Municipal Act… Elected council members have the responsibility “to ensure the accountability and transparency of the operations of the municipality, including the activities of the senior management of the municipality”. None of council have understood this.
At issue was a request to have a professional valuation made of Grimsby’s largest asset: Grimsby Power Inc. There is no reason this request should not have not been reported and acted on in open session. The reason for not being reported on needs to be exposed. It includes the plans that the mayor and Grimsby Power had to reorganize company ownership by taking the multi-million dollar indebted Grimsby Energy Inc. subsidiary (the biodigester owner) out of Grimsby Power’s books and load it entirely onto the books of the Town, which of course means you, the taxpayer. The valuation of Grimsby Power Inc. should be similar to the $41.3 million that Hydro One recently paid for Orillia
Power – with a similar size customer base. Because a professional valuation and Request for Proposals to other interested power companies doesn’t appear to be happening, we can expect that the offers from others will be…..under whelming. The reasons for this prospective event unfolding in this fashion have not been made public. Every Grimsby property taxpayer and Grimsby Power customer needs to be concerned about this and convey their opinions to their respective aldermen. If we don’t, your property tax and Grimsby Power bills will reflect this cover-up. Wayne Fertich

Answers needed to electricity issue
MIKE WILLISCRAFT the middle of the road. Lots of people shout out greetings. I try to stop, figure out the source and see who it is but it is tough. Walking along Livingston, I would say I am in range long enough to hear about 8-10 seconds of conversation depending on the voice of the speakers. Sometimes there is work talk. Sometimes there is kid talk. Sometimes there is “you’ve had enough to drink” talk. And sometimes there is some pretty spicy “what are we going to do when the kids are asleep” talk. It’s funny that some people seem to think that darkness acts as some sort of sound block or maybe they just don’t care...hard to say. But it makes for an entertaining 25 minutes. This year, the funniest ones were the two guys, sipping something in cooly cups (likely a diet Coke) trying to work a trade, Grimsby council for West Lincoln council. The funny part was they were stuck on who had to throw in the
bag of hockey pucks to sweeten the pot. I actually stopped and set up a photo in vicinity so I could hear the conversation continue. I could have laughed out loud 4-5 times. It was a serious crowd. At three different points discussion about the fate of Grimsby Secondary, South Lincoln and Beamsville District were all on the agenda. Few people hold out hope, really. I had two shout outs, when will Hat Trick show up...Page 15 this week. Check it out. Sam Oosterhoff made the parade agenda. Two different conversations, neither pair supported him and seemed to scratch their head how he won. One person said they didn’t vote at all. There were several other snippits, but those were the ones which registered. It should also be noted about the Grimsby parade something firefighter Jim Bergshoeff noted. When I talked to him about how the food drive went he pointed out it was really the first year Livingston right out to town hall was fully lined with spectators. When he noted that, I pictured the walk and he is bang on. There was very little area that did not have people already sitting on the curb or chairs marking spots in place. I think next year I will have to plan more time so I can walk slower and take in more chatter.

No proper notice for DIA meeting, businessman Dear Editor, It is with great difficulty that I try and understand how the Grimsby DIA conducted a legitimate AGM last Thursday. There was nothing on their website, no listing on the DIA calendar, and no email. After confirming there was an email distribution problem with one of the board members, it is ridiculous
Letter to conceive that an AGM would continue. There are several business owners that would like their voices heard and, yet again, we are denied a democratic process to provide such a platform. I was informed there was an ad published in one of
the local newspapers, but apparently that paper stopped delivering to downtown businesses last year, so many DIA business owners would not even see the meeting notice unless they happened to live in town as well. Many do not. The meeting went on, numerous people were left off the invite list and there is nothing anyone
can do. This is just adds to the disconnect a lot of business owners in the downtown core have with the powers that be. And considering three people now on the DIA board are also active Grimsby aldermen, it really doesn’t surprise me that they do their best to keep it a secret. Shane Weaver
