Close, but Grimsby’s CoGen lives on By Mike Williscraft NewsNow It took a tiebreaking vote to give Grimsby’s troubled CoGen unit another life, but this reprieve may be its last. Grimsby council voted Monday to accept a staff report by public works director Bob LeRoux to spend up to $7,000 to repair one of the two generators located in an outbuilding at town hall. The dual units, which were not used for five years after they were first installed, have met with ongoing and expensive repairs. Last year, any repair costs were capped and Monday council opted to get this latest round of repairs done so one

unit would be functional during JanuaryFebruary, the only two month of the year they are used. Council considered lifting the item given Mayor Bob Bentley, public works chair Ald. Steve Berry and Ald. John Dunstall were all absent from Monday’s meeting. “This is a big ticket item. I think everyone should be here voting on it,” said Ald. Dave Kadwell. While Ald. Dave Wilson agreed, Ald. Nick DiFlavio, Michelle Seaborn and Joanne Johnston did not, so the matter proceeded. While council voted to proceed with

the needed repair, it was clearly stated, the end of the line is near for the CoGen unit. “This is kind of the last straw,” said DiFlavio. “If there are additional costs, we shut it down...There is an end...After that, no more.” Kadwell wanted the spending stopped immediately. “To me, it is just a money pit,” said Kadwell. LeRoux suggested, down the road, when hydro rates would give a beneficial cost/benefit analysis, council could consider firing it up again.

PECAN LOGS INGREDIENTS • 1 cup butter, softened • 5 tbsp icing sugar • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup finely chopped pecans • Icing sugar for rolling DIRECTIONS In a small bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. Add the flour, beating on low speed just until combined. Stir in pecans. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Shape 1/2 cupfulls into 1/2-inch thick logs. Cut logs into 2-inch pieces. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 15-18 minutes or until lightly browned. Roll warm cookies in extra icing sugar. Cool on wire racks. Store in covered containers or can be frozen. Makes 2.5 dozen. WINTER FRUIT MACAROONS INGREDIENTS • 1 can sweetened condensed milk • 2-1/4 cups sweetened shredded coconut • 2-1/4 cups coarsely chopped dates • 1-1/2 cups coarsely chopped walnuts • 3.4 cup dried cherries • 3/4 cup dried cranberries • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl mix all ingredients together well. Drop by tablespoonfuls 2” apart on parchment lined cookie sheets. Bake 8-10 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks. For variation dip bottoms of cookies in melted chocolate and allow to set. Makes about 6 doz.

Newspaper giants should look in mirror No use crying over spilled milk. The milk is spilled and lawyers can clean it up, so our NewsNow team is looking ahead. To that end, on a peripheral issue, it was noted when reading much of the fallout from the mega-newspaper deal and shuttering of 30-plus newspapers instantly in the shuffle between Postmedia and Torstar that Minister of Canadian Heritage Melanie Joly unfairly was being pilloried about the House of Commons. The opposition somehow pointed blame at her for not coughing up a subsidy to the newspaper giants when they came calling hat in hand crying the blues about internet pressure as a cause for a weakened newspaper industry. Balderdash! How about just plain inferior management practices? How about predatory pricing? How about missing the target on their own strategies to the tune of blown 10s of millions of dollars. There is no way on God’s green earth any newspaper giant should get a dime of government support. It’s not tough to figure out where revenue went when they’re selling space for 60-70 per cent of any meaure of a normal rate. Look in the mirror people. M.W.

Parade chatter always unique Like the Night Before Christmas - oh ya, that baby’s in the hopper - anecdotes about chatter heard along the Grimsby Santa Claus parade route has become a bit of a holiday tradition. I’ve shot about 15 out of the 22 parades I have been in town for. Since it changed to an evening start from an early afternoon kickoff, I have followed the tradition of working my way west along Livingston to get down to the marshalling area. There is usually a good shot or two with people getting ready by town hall. This year was perfect for that; no rain, mild. That has not always been the case let me tell you! The thing about walking back downtown to let the parade come to me and shooting photos in the core is, by the time I make my way to Main Street it is getting pretty dark. It is a little like when people walk by our front window at the office here. People walk by carrying on conversations – or occasionally stop – and they think because the window is there it is some sort of sound barrier as well. Nope, it’s not. In fact, glass conducts sound quite nicely, so we hear a lot more than we want to really. Like those boneheads who feel the need to lean on their horns when some schmuck is turning left admittedly illegally - off of Main headed west and north on Mountain. Not sure what they get out of that, but it happens every day. But back to the parade... in the darkness people don’t figure you can hear them from five feet away. I’m not stopping and listen-

MIKE WILLISCRAFT ing in, but it is surprising how much is picked up just passing by. Some of it is hilarious because what is heard can be horribly out of context, leaving one to wonder just what the heck was before and after the comments that were made. This year, there was a serious discussion about redevelopment of depressed areas, cause in point downtown Detroit. Having spent a lot of time in downtown Motown, it was interesting to hear some thoughts...and they were well rounded and informed. Of course, several discussions about newspaper wars came up, but I am not going to touch on that. Fireworks, recipes and general chatter was most common. However, three different discussions about hydro rates and Grimsby Energy popped up. A couple people really had no clue what they were saying, one guy had a little correct information but one fellow was right on top of it. In that chat, a story published locally last week (not in this paper) came up which noted the possibility of selling excess methane to Union Gas. The learned fellow had clearly read this paper

weeks ago when it was noted there is a capacity issue at the good ol’ biodigester because the system was built with one feeder stock system as opposed to two as it was initially designed with when it was to use two half-megawatt generators. When it was reconfigured to use a one-megawatt unit, someone thought it would be a good idea to only have one system to keep the biofuel moving. Ooops! Anyways, this guy knew all that realizing the facility will be lucky to generate enough fuel to ever get within 10 per cent of the 97 per cent efficiency level on which its business plan was built. That was easily the most informed comment I have heard outside of 3-4 dedicated debunkers in three long, painful years of covering this project. Sorry for completely killing the festive mood of the parade with something like that, but it also ties in with the best news to come out of Grimsby council in the last two terms. Finally, maybe, possibly and with a slight tail-wind, the other boondoggle which has been an albatross around public works’ neck since council, in its wisdom, opted to by the useless little hut and accompanying machinery from Grimsby Energy years ago. Allegedly, one more repair is all it may get. Any more repair would result in a shutdown and mercifully, that money eating waste of taxpayers’ dollars will get mothballed. A few weeks ago, I noted more money could be made if that became an ice creams stand. I stand by my earlier comments.

Thanks from parade organizer Dear Editor, It takes a community sized effort to host a great parade; that is one thing I have experienced over the past 15 years. This year, our 60th parade, was no exception and there are many people that deserve recognition. To the many residents and businesses that accommodate the road closure for the parade every year – thank you. To the dedicated community organizations and businesses that take the time to create amazing floats and entries that really are the heart of the parade – thank you. To the generous, local sponsors that keep the parade financially possible – thank you. To the many volunteers, Niagara Regional Police Service, and also to the many Town of Grimsby staff who do a

community’s character. When you see the thousands of people that attend the parade filling the streets from end to end, smiling and waving, it makes it all worthwhile and it is one more example of why Grimsby is a wonderful community to be a part of. We have one of the best “small town” night time parades around, and that is because of the collective community effort. Way to go Grimsby, see you next year!
