Cause “undetermined” in major Grimsby fire By Mike Williscraft NewsNow After six months of investigation, the cause of the $2 million July 6 fire in downtown Grimsby has been announced as “undetermined”.

“The cause is undetermined, but I have listed the most probable cause as carelessly discarded smoking material,” said Kevin Pahor of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office. Pahor was on the scene to

launch the investigation the day of the fire and made the announcement last week. “From all the material that was gathered that (carelessly discarded smoking material) is the most

probable cause,” Pahor added. The community has been rife with speculation and rumours as to the cause, many saying they believed a barbecue, which was visible See CAUSE, Page 2

Video in Library of Congress The highly decorated “Engagement at The Forty” has found its way into the historical archives of the U.S. Brian Purdy, who created the video based on the well-known War of 1812 battle centralized in what is now Grimsby, noted the designation at the Dec. 18 meeting of Grimsby council. “We are happy to inform you that the video was selected for addition to the Library’s collections...” wrote a Library of Congress representative in notifying Purdy. “It is very gratifying,” said Purdy.

We will not be undersold on tires Lincoln gets flood compensation The Town of Lincoln will receive more than $613,000 in provincial funding as a result of the Town’s application to Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program in response to this spring’s flooding damage across Lincoln. The Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance provides funding to municipalities to repair damage from a natural disaster. This past April and May, Lincoln experienced unprecedented flooding along the shoreline and in communities. As such, for the first time in the Town’s history, a voluntary evacuation of residents was implemented during these heavy rain-

falls along Lincoln’s shoreline due to safety issues. The funding provided by the Province will recover costs associated with: • Repairing significant shoreline and road damage along lakeshore roads, to include Lakeside Dr., Lakeshore Rd. and Verity Lane • Repairing Charles Daley Park, including the accessible parking lot and further repairs on west side of park in 2018 • The flooding response of additional pumping support of the sewer systems that became overwhelmed in Jordan Station and Campden.

Working CO alarm saves Grimsby family’s lives A working CO detector at a Grimsby home saved the lives of those inside, said Grimsby Fire Chief Mike Cain. Dec. 9, Grimsby Fire responded to call from a Grimsby homeowner reporting their carbon monoxide (CO) alarm was activating. “A working CO alarm is credited for alerting this family of the dangerous presence of CO gas in their home that was created by a faulty furnace,” said Cain. “Without this life saving device, CO gas would have gone undetected, causing flu like symptoms

such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and in high concentrations, may be fatal.” CO is a colourless, tasteless and odourless gas produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood have insufficient air to burn completely. This can happen in any appliance or device that burns these fuels such as a stove, furnace, fireplace, hot water heater, vehicle engine or portable generator. The Fire Code requires the installation of CO alarms adjacent to sleeping

areas in residential buildings containing a fuel fired appliance, fireplace or attached garage. “Working CO alarms are critical as they detect the presence of this deadly gas that goes undetected without one,” said Cain. Home owners and landlords are reminded that failure to install and maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms may result in fines under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act up to $50,000 for an individual and $100,000 for a corporation.

No answer likely a good answer It is noted in the front-page story of this edition that there really was no answer with the “undetermined” result of a sixmonth investigation into the $2 million fire that burned the heart out of downtown Grimsby. No doubt many among NewsNow’s readership REALLY wanted to know what happened, who to point the finger at, if there was, indeed, a person deserving of blame. It is quite likely those employed the affected businesses may suspect or even know who was smoking - the likely cause, according to the Fire Marshal’s office - at the rear of the building where the blaze started. For the community, to over it all, and certainly for that individual, I think it is better we don’t know unequivocally what happened. It was an accident, granted, a horrible and costly one, but an accident nonetheless. One day, that patch of ground will be healed and it hoped those affected will be also. M.W.

Divine intervention right on cue I don’t know about you, but I sure will be happy to be looking at 2017 in my rearview mirror. People note all the time how time seems to fly, where does the time go, well, 2017 could not tick down fast enough for this camper. The year had one beauty of a curveball left to serve up to your favourite smalltown newspaper editor. Of course, it popped up on Tuesday as we tried to get through deadline for our Christmas edition - complete with the half-second blinking off and on of our electricity right about 1 p.m. which cost us in-progress pages and ads as well as scrambling our server. That set us all back 45 minutes before got all squared away. About 4 p.m. I get an email that basically read, “Hey big guy, I have a problem and I’m hoping you can help me. It is right up your alley.” Signed by Reverend Kevin McAllister. Now, this time of year, the name Kevin McAllister takes on a whole other connotation - the beloved (although currently quite bizarre) adolescent character in the Christmas classic Home Alone. To me, Kevin McAllister is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever know; one of my running buddies from college days. Kevbo, as he was affectionately known by the inner circle (for no apparent reason) opted out of a journalism career about a year after we graduated. He was much smarter than most of us,realizing there was no dough in journalism unless you want to gain a little experience then sell out to public relations. Kevbo took a different tack, though. He had an uncle who was an airplane mechanic at Pearson International. To get his ticket, he went into the air force to obtain his education, served

MIKE WILLISCRAFT until his “education debt” was paid off and then embarked on civilian life. Kevbo opted to do the same. Let me tell you, when the thought of this 6’4”, 160 lbs soaking wet character joining the military popped into the minds of me and my college buddies’ minds guffaws could be heard for miles around. We were sure basic training would break the boy. We were sure he must have figured out a way to beat the system when we heard he passed muster and was assigned out New Brunswick way. We met up a couple times when he was back to Toronto visiting family, but the email I had for him stopped working, as did his home phone, more than a decade ago. Turns out, a few years ago he decided he wanted to fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a minister. He set about gaining the education part-time while still in the air force. He got out about 18 months ago. I still have his parents phone number in Brampton emblazoned in my brain for some reason and yes they still live there. I found that out in a 90-minute phone call late Tuesday night after we got the paper to bed. My first words, “Kev, God must be one forgiving fellow

to allow you to become an Anglican minister!” I think he fell off his chair. After he collected himself, the conversation went on from there like we had been next-door neighbours for the last 30 years after college. Boy, I needed that! After reminding Kev about a few anecdotes of why God must be super forgiving, I asked him what was the reason for his call. He said he lives in a very depressed area just outside Fredericton. His church, along with about a dozen others, are about to launch a program to raise funds for kids whose families do not have enough money to give the youngsters a good breakfast before they start their days - not unlike the program Grimsby Benevolent Fund started several years ago. His community does not have an organization such as GBF, so the churches tend to take on such projects. The goal of this joint church project is $100,000. I am going to help with their public relations, doing press releases and networking with some New Brunswick radio folk (thanks to my baby brother’s expertise as he went from newspapers to radio about 10 years ago). I also suggested to Kevbo some event ideas, such as the Wii bowling which Big Brothers Big Sister used in a pinch after Stryx closed down. As well, I explained the Kinsmen mini-putt concept noting the extreme popularity of that event, and was going to seek out a craftsman to get started on making some portable golf holes. Yes, good readers, it was divine intervention of sorts which reconnected me to one of my best friends on the planet and I am taking that as an extremely positive sign 2018 is going to kick butt!!
