Grimsby store part of historic shisha bust Shisha tobacco with $18 million street value confiscated from 23 locations By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A Grimsby variety store was part of a 23-location confiscation of 6,000 total cases of shisha tobacco earlier this month. Early on Tuesday, Dec. 6 officers from three police services descended on Milk & Things at 74 Main St. W. in Grimsby with marked and unmarked units as well as a UHaul van. - mostly in Hamilton, including three in Philadelphia, Pa. - 6,000 boxes with 6 kg per box, 36,000 kg of shisha tobacco was taken. “If we do the calculation, that represents close to $18 million in profit for the organization,” said Commander Truong. The investigation and seizure was carried out with the efforts of several law enforcement agencies in addition to ACCES, which is a department of the City of Montreal Police Service. GBF services vital to keeping families afloat By Mike Williscraft NewsNow When one thinks of Grimsby Benevolent Fund, most tend to think about donating food to support local families in need. While that need may be real and growing, so too are the needs in other areas such as assistance with hydro bills, rent and other core expenses. For Cheryl Donnelly, her husband and four children - who range in age from 4-15 years - the variety of services have given them a shot at

keeping things together through a tough financial stretch. “We’ve been using the GBF for four years now, since I got downsized from Red Cross after an amalgamation,” said Cheryl. “Before that, we didn’t know anything about them except for the retail shop.” Because of that, Cheryl was quite tentative when she called the facility to make an initial appointment. “I spoke to Stacy (Elia, executive director) right off. She asked me to bring in some documen-

tation they needed to give an assessment, and she explained all the things they could offer,” recalled Cheryl. “For me, that was very tough. I am the sort of person who doesn’t like to ask for help. It was very difficult for both my husband and I. We had to provide for our kids. It was not up to us and pride. I feel no shame whatsoever in needing help.” One of the things which surprised Cheryl was the assistance available to help with utility bills. “We had a backlog of bills and we had many See GBF, Page 3

charges have been laid as the investigation continues to come together, he added. “I would like to mention the help of the OPP and CBSA, the Peel and Hamilton Regional Police, Homeland Security in the U.S. and la Surete du Quebec,” said Commander Truong. “It’s an historic seizure; 33,000 kg is a lot! In terms of taxes, it’s a big loss for the government.”

Kinettes host annual babysitting course The Grimsby Kinettes are gearing up for a milestone next month. Jan. 26 will mark the start of the group’s 57th semi-annual babysitting course which Kinettes have staged as the group itself hits 50 in 2017. “It is that time of year again and we are trying to get an early start,” said Kinette organizer Tracy Spalding. Held at the

Grimsby Fire Hall, 261 Ontario St., the course is held on six consecutive Thursdays, Jan. 26, Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23 and March 2. There are four course nights an exam night and graduation. The amount of stress that has taken off us is incredible.” And just when they might have thought a corner had been turned with Cheryl getting a full-time job, her husband got laid off this past summer. While millions of kids around the globe ripped open their Christmas gifts last weekend, the fami-

lies signed on for the Hamper Program also received some items from their list. “It’s amazing how they do it, They listen to what you say and what you need and match that up for the kids. They think it’s the best ever,” said Cheryl. “My kids love the GBF shop. They don’t need top-of-the-line, off the shelf stuff. They don’t know any different and appreciate what they do have.” That example is made crystal clear by an anecdote Cheryl related when asked about her children and being able to do what other children do: case

in point, dropping into a fast food place for a treat. “He has taken the McDonald’s gift certificates he received and taken a friend out for French fries. He knows his friend has issues at home and would never be able to do that sort of thing, so he took what he got and shared it with him,” noted Cheryl. “Some people may not think that is a big thing, but I can tell you it is. They had a nice lunch together, had some fun and shared it all.” The ongoing efforts of GBF’s staff and volunteers never goes unnoticed, either, she

added. “We deal with Ashley at the food bank. She has been amazing: very nice and welcoming. They all made it very easy and comfortable to go in and talk to them,” said Cheryl. “They really are like family now.” And to support the “family” that is supporting them, the Donnellys were among the scores of people who turned out earlier this month to sort food and toys at Trinity United Church in Grimsby as part of the Hamper Program. “We will give back to them any way we can,” said Cheryl.

From Page 6 In a small bowl, combine sour cream and horseradish. Season with salt and pepper. In another bowl, combine breadcrumbs, olive oil, herbs and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium high heat. Season roast with salt and pepper; sear roast in pan until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board. Spread sour cream mixture on one side of roast; top with breadcrumb mixture, pressing to adhere. Return roast to skillet or transfer to a rimmed baking sheet and place in oven. Cook until medium-rare or an instant read thermometer inserted into center of meat reaches 140 degrees, about 35-45 minutes. Let rest 15 minutes before slicing. Serves 8.

When things begin to get overwhelming it is important to stop and reflect… to truly understand the purpose and meaning of the holiday. For some it is not only the stress of the busy season and added responsibility that makes this season difficult. There are many people that have lost a loved one and their absence is felt even greater over the holidays. For many it is difficult to celebrate

when it feels like someone is missing from their family circle. They focus on what is not there instead of the past experiences and wonderful moments that were created when this person was present. I believe that everyone has experienced something good in their life—something that made them happy and excited. I also believe that the majority of us have also experienced sadness and a loss in our life, whether it is the loss of a loved one through death or a

relationship break-up. The difference is some people are able to make peace with what has happened and some people remain stuck and are unhappy because they haven’t been taught how to deal with their situation. When you are faced with a negative situation it is important to state that you don’t like the situation that you are in—pretending that everything is okay, when clearly it is not, is never a good thing. It is also important to state that although you may not know how

you are going to fix the situation, if you stay in faith and believe that the situation will be resolved in your favour, it will. So what is the key to surviving the season? Take one moment at a time and enjoy what you are doing in that moment. It is the simple things that bring us the most joy. If we were to look through the eyes of a child—they view the holidays with wonder and magic. Children do this because they believe and have faith. I ask that you sus-

Biodigester alternative better: case closed Dear Editor, As Grimsby’s town council is to take a tour of the biodigester this week, it is hoped they ask some serious questions and research comparable costs and features of power generation alternatives to a munic-

ipal biodigester. Consider that the current price of industrial solar panels is now 70 cents per watt output. So, a solar panel farm that can produce two megawatts of power during daylight, (the new

Letter panels can produce some power even on cloudy days), and factoring in night downtime, there would be approx. an average of 800 KW/h yearly output – about what might be produced by the Grimsby biodigester – best case scenario.

The capital cost would be $1.4 million for the panels plus installation & wiring – say $2 million total. No moving parts, no engine or generator to break down or explode, no operating costs, no methane, CO2 or water pollution, no rotten egg smells, no operating costs, project manage-

ment fees, etc. Of course, we don’t need the power these days, but that doesn’t seem to be of concern to our politicians. Furthermore, natural composting is a much more cost effective and environmentally beneficial way of turning silage & manure in our region into real fertilizer,

not the raw, caustic digestate produced by a biodigester. Compare it to $8 million & counting for the Grimsby biodigester. Case closed. Besides, after scarfing down last night’s monster dinner, we don’t need any more ‘gas’ in the community! Michael Rozender

A crowd of about 75 people attended a workshop to help people cope with various issues which can arise over the holidays at Grimsby Activity Centre this month. However, to those in the community at large, some of the comments made by one lady whose family has benefited greatly from the efforts of Grimsby Benevolent Fund may be a bit of a surprise. To hear GBF - as do other West Niagara services such as Community Care of West Niagara, Community Care of West Lincoln and Village of Hope - supports clients with bill payment, rent obligations and other financial stressors may be a surprise. Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out, 2016 It is the last column of the year, and there will be no “B” word uttered. I can’t say the same for next week as some additional information is unfolding but, for now, let’s just deal with some other items. For many, getting 2016 in the rearview mirror of life will be a welcomed event. I saw the calendar was able to finish off two more from the entertainment field - Carrie Fisher and George Michaels. I don’t have a Carrie Fisher story, but I did have one chance meeting with Mr. Michaels. For any of you who have travelled the corridors of downtown Toronto well after closing time of the fine beverage establishments, you will know of The Big Slice. This pizza joint was open til 4 a.m. and, as a result, drew every munchy hunting miscreant you can imagine, me included. My college roommate and I, who had every connection to afterhours clubs imaginable, were out and about one night well after 3 a.m. and were in need of sustenance. Upon entering the TBS, we placed our orders and waited patiently at the counter. As we did so, we could not help but notice one of the biggest men I’ve ever seen standing in the middle of the place, clearly en garde. To us, this was also clearly a signal that he was protecting someone

Surveying the two seated facing each other at the table, it took me a minute, but I figured out the one facing me was Andrew Ridgely, George Michael’s partner in Wham! Wham was super huge that summer with their album Make It Big, which included Careless Whispers and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, neither faves of mine, but to each his own. What mattered was my roommates girlfriend was gaga for these guys, so we had to investigate. One step towards the table met with three steps from the mountain man. Now, I’ve always been a big fellow, so when I see someone I think is big, well, you can just imagine. Anyways, we approach the body guard and say, “Are those the guys from Wham!?” “Keep walkin’,” was the response. “Come on, we won’t make a big scene., We just need one autograph for my buddy’s girlfriend

and we’re outta here.” Crickets. Having pulled a lot of stunts with my roommate, we knew what needed to be done. I took a step to the right to draw the body guard and my shifty little Greek roomy stepped left to get around him. It seemed like a good plan until the big man stretched out his paw and wrenched my roomy into a snug headlock, which I am sure would have evolved into a sleeper hold if George Michaels had not turned around and gestured ever-so-slightly to the guard who released him. “You want an autograph?” Michaels said. “That’d be great,” said my roomy. “No problem. Got a pen? What do you want signed?” he asked. Hmmm, it was 3 a.m. on a weeknight, not exactly a card show or Comicon where you prepared. We had not thought that far ahead. The only option was one of the first-class napkins from TBS, which he promptly placed in front of the duo. They promptly signed it, “For Karen”, we thanked them and were on our way. A silly anecdote to be sure, but for many a touch of levity is needed these days and to cap a year which has been sad in oh so many respects. From all of us at NewsNow, we say goodbye to 2016 and we wish all our dedicated readers and advertisers a happy and prosperous year in 2017!

Letter tices of this taxpayerfunded organization, under the supervision of the Ontario Liberal government, why not support this audit on behalf of the taxpayers? A municipal government is supposed to represent and stand up for the interest of its residents, regardless if this is a provincial matter or not. When the NPCA is spending many millions of our tax dollars we are entitled to know where our money is spent. On top of that our provincial government already has an extremely bad

reputation when it comes to transparency and financial mismanagement. They lack the trust and confidence of almost all Ontarians. Their bad behaviour is followed in many lower governments and other parts of the public sector in Ontario because there is no accountability, so politicians and bureaucrats are getting away with it. Grimsby council has made very questionable decisions so why not turn things around for a change and take a stand for their own residents, who also contribute lots of money to the NPCA and demand an audit. Dear Editor, Mr. Williscraft ended the year with a Christmas-wrapped wake up call for Grimsby residents. One would have hoped that after the barrage of criticism of Grimsby Council they would take a more taxpayer friendly approach, but that was idle hope. In a statement Grimsby Council voted not to ask for an audit of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority because it was a provincial matter.
