Grist hopes third time a charm for Pro Mazda series Grimsby native plans to keep 2015 momentum rolling into springboard year By Mike Williscraft NewsNow He’s been the Mazda Pro Series Rookie if the year. He finished up the second half of the 2015 season with an eye-catching six poles, which came with three wins and four podiums. Now Grimsby native Garett Grist looks ahead to the coming 2016 with keen expectation and a plan to win it all. “We want to do next year what we had a chance to do this year despite a slow start,” said Grist, who noted he would return to Juncos Racing again. “I left Andretti Autosport for Juncos, a smaller outfit based in Indianapolis and its been great. The guys did a great job with
the car. We had a lot of pace all year. I’m looking forward to a great year.”
While winning the Pro Mazda driving championship is his goal, he noted it was within his

grasp this year if not for a disappointing ruling at the series stop in Lexington, Kentucky. “I qualified first but they said I jumped the start so instead of the pole, I had to start 20th,” recalled Grist, who noted his car was the fastest all that week, posting the fastest lap consistently, and he ended up improving to a seventh place finish. “If I had not been placed back I would have won the championship this year, so I still have something to prove next year.” His sights have been set high and who could blame him when he had five of the last seven poles of the season, qualifying second in the other two races.

From Page 1 While he has been enjoying his off-season, he has been putting in his time in the gym with rowing and treadmill work while keeping an eye to putting on some weight as he starts to prepare for bigger, heavier cars. “We’ve talked about it (a career plan). I am planning on competing in the Pro Mazda next year, then two years in Indy Lights, then I will be ready to step into Indy racing when I’m 24,” said Grist, noting the Juncas team had the Indy Lights driving champ in their stable this year. His launch to that ambitious goal starts in St. Petersburg Florida in March. That road to the driving championship goes through a Toronto stop July 15-17 where he won this year.
“That was pretty cool. There were even some people from Grimsby there. When I was up on the podium, I could hear them yelling, ‘Go Grimsby’,” re-

New Year’s address
Lincoln plan for future set As we look back to 2015, it was a year filled with change for the Town of Lincoln. It was also a year where we found our strategic direction and started planning the future by completing the new future focus corporate plan and the associated work plan. These will guide our work, not only in 2016, but also for the rest of this council term. The priorities in our plan will guide our collective efforts and our investments in Town services. I look forward to 2016, as it will be a year filled with realizing our potential. Council will guide local decisions and continue to promote our quality of life and inherent beauty. We will capitalize on our ideal geographic location, promoting our transportation corridors and economic development opportunities. Lincoln is a community with both urban and rural elements and we will continue to balance those appropriately. Council is particularly pleased that recently the New York Times highlighted the wineries in the Niagara Region, specifically showcasing many in Lincoln; similarly, three local
restaurants in our community made the top 100 in Canada. Many outside our borders are now beginning to discover the gem we already know Lincoln is. An asset that many of you have made clear must be protected. 2016 will also see us look at the way we do business, specifically continuing to be more customer-service focused, and finding new ways to communicate more effectively what we are doing. Key to the future of Lincoln is our youth, who are critical to our success as a community. We will personally focus on youth initiatives including and utilizing technology to engage them, as well as through projects like the budget proposed skate park, the restoration of the Scout Hut in Beamsville and other ideas we hope come forward through the new Mayor Youth Council. Dunav had brief, seven-year run It was 35-years ago this week that anyone last heard from the Yugoslavian freighter Dunav. The Captain reported that his ship was taking water off Central Japan on Dec. 28, 1980, but the vessel was never heard from again. The 178.44m long by 22.97m wide bulk carrier had loaded a cargo of steel at Hamilton and was almost to its destination of Tsingtao, China, when it disappeared in heavy weather. All 31 sailors aboard the diesel powered Dunav in Sault Ste. Marie - Roger LeLievre - Photo
Shipwreck vessel were lost. Dunav was built at La Spezia, Italy, and completed in Sept. 1973. It made its first appearance in the Seaway in 1974 and traded in and out of the lakes from
time to time during its brief seven-year career. Two other former Seaway traders were also wrecked on Dec. 28, 1980. The Prins Alexander on the Red Sea and the Holmside off Morocco were a total loss that day as well.

Niagara Region Wind Project (the “Project”) Within the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet and the Town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario Haldimand County and Niagara Region, the 11th of January 2016.
Niagara Region Wind Corporation, now FWRN LP (the “Proponent”), are engaging in a renewable energy project for which a Renewable Energy Approval (“REA”) was issued by the Ministry of the Environment (now the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) on November 21, 2014. Project Description The Project is located within the Townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet and the Town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region and Haldimand County in Southern Ontario. The Project will consist of 77 wind turbine generators, step-up transformer, electrical collector lines, a transmission line, two transformer substations, turbine access roads and construction staging areas. The Project will have a total maximum nameplate capacity of up to 230 MW.
Underground Transmission Line – Road Closure Vault and duct bank installations, along with underground trenching will begin on Mountainview Road starting Jan. 11th, 2016. The road closure would be from: Jan. 11th to 16th. Detours for this road closure are: South Service Road to Lincoln Avenue to Greenlane (see diagram above). Please note that public services (i.e. mail delivery, garbage pick-up, school buses, etc.) may be disrupted during this time.

Fairgrounds used to help foodgrains bank, $8,800 raised A cooperative effort among area farmers and West Niagara Agricultural Society has netted more than $8,800 for Canadian Foodgrains Bank. “We supplied the land at the fairgrounds and Twentyview Farms planted the crop.” said WNAS general manager Albert Witteveen, who noted the federal government matches contributions to the bank on a 4-1 basis after the crop is harvested and sold. Witteveen noted the land has been replanted in wheat for next year’s crop.

Lincoln midget rally for Silver Stick win The Lincoln Zwart Systems Midget AE Blades captured the Wellesley/ St. Clements Regional Silver Stick in dramatic fashion scoring twice in the last two minutes to defeat Pelham 3-2 on Dec. 3. The win earns the Blades a spot in the North American Silver Stick Championships to be held in Pelham Jan. 7-10, 2016. The Blades started with a 6-0 win over Ajax Knights. Leading the attack for the Blades were Andrew Sindall with a pair of goals and an assist and Thomas Davis who also bulged the twine twice in his best game of the year. Cristian Bate had a goal and a helper and Curtis Guerreiro from James Ross rounded out the scoring. Aidan McDonald earned the shutout. Game 2 was a 2-0 loss to Tavistock. Goaltender Blair Pachereva gave his team every opportunity to win and couldn’t be faulted for either goal. In Game 3 versus Caledonia Thunder Pachereva unstrapped the goalie gear and donned the player’s equipment to give the Blades some extra punch up front. He converting a feed from Wyatt Cheberinoff
for a 1-0 lead. Evan Turnbull scored on a giveaway and Aidan McDonald earned his second shutout. The win gave the Blades first place in their pool. James Ross gave the Blades the lead in their semifinal tilt against Listowel on a feed from Max Mosquite. By the midway point of the third, the Cyclones has a 2-1 lead. Matthew Memme saved the day scoring on a breakaway with a little over three minutes left to send the game to overtime. Two shifts in Matthew Hayne set up Andrew Sindall for the winner. In their last league game, against the Pelham Panther’s, their finals op-
ponent, won 6-0 maybe making them take the finals game lightly. Pelham scored first, but Bate drew the Blades even in the second on a nice assist by Owen Olds before Pelham regained the lead again late in the second. Just 24 seconds into a power play opportunity Lincoln tied the game. James Ross from Guerreiro and Sindall to drew the Blades even It looked like the finals was heading to OT, but Bate picked up a loose puck in the corner, calmly skated out front and, using the Pelham defenceman as a screen, tucked the winner under the crossbar with only 2.9 ticks left on the clock.

While a packed house enjoyed Christmas dinner at Village of Hope’s event last Wednesday at Great Lakes Christian High School, Lee and Thomas Scott took a break from helping out to ham it up with the evening’s moose mascot.
Big year for Grimsby Kinsmen There are milestones and then there are milestones and a big one is fast approaching for one of Grimsby’s most active and longstanding organizations, the Grimsby Kinsmen Club. Kin Dennis Pyatt, still and active member with the club, was the catalyst to seeing the organization get its start in 1966. It amazing to see Dennis being a vital member of the club after all these years but, there he is doling out hot chocolate at the Santa Claus Parade, helping out with fireworks sales, or selling hamburgers at a Kin barbecue. That is an impressive feat. Dennis estimates the club has donated more than $2 million for various causes since its inception. That, too, is truly remarkable. The Kinsmen, and Kinettes are just one of the groups which make this a great place to live. M.W.
Looking ahead to a bright 2016 We’re right at deadline and I left this space for last, by design this time...not procrastinating, although I am perfectly capable of that. Nope, this time I was a little different. There is never a shortage of things to write about but when it is the final column before the turning of the calendar it is different. Really it is just another day and month, but to say it is more than symbolic would be ridiculous. Not only is New Years a time to reload and plan to march into a whole new unscripted, uncharted adventure, but there is also more time than usual to pause and reflect on what has taken place. The term “hindsight is 20/20” usually comes into play when anything suspect is considered from the past. That will never change. With that, I offer my insight as 2016 comes to a close. Generally speaking, if bad stuff is going to happen, it’s going to happen. Most times little or nothing can be done and, it seems, one doesn’t even see the bad stuff coming. With the good, I have always been a firm believer that one makes their own breaks - as in there isn’t really good luck, just a lot of hard work which positions a person for something good to happen. Now that doesn’t mean there isn’t “dumb luck” in the world. I define this as some good that happens to a person for absolutely no apparent reason. However, if you stop to
MIKE WILLISCRAFT think about the people you know who have been successful or had good things come to them, it is most often because those folks put in time and effort which brought about something good. So, as we head into 2016, I would like you, good reader, to think about what you can do as “good” that can help you position yourself to benefit from this phenomenon. No, it is not paying it forward. I see it that way because – if one pays for something – one would have some expectation of getting something in return. To truly give something means you expect nothing in return. This is the basic credo I have always tried to employ not just at year-end but year round. It always seemed to me that doing something, anything, for someone or some organization, wasn’t all that good if you “expect” something in return. That is more or a karma thing, if you go for that kind of thinking. This paper, on its best day, if a printed example of what my philosophy is.
We try to do things for people all the time, every edition, with no expectation of getting anything back. The proof, simply, is in the pudding. Either we are here, or we blow away in a stiff wind. Going on four years this coming May, we seem to have made our own luck and are seeing a growing, steady advertising base which graciously allows us to exist. To sit back and “expect” would be folly. For us, the climate has noticeably changed in the last 3-4 months and that is a good thing. We have always looked at this whole endeavour as “we’re only as good as our last week”, meaning we need to retool and do that best we can with what we have. Is it nerve-wrecking? Sure is? Do I still love it? Every second. So the fact that we are surviving into 2016 and seeing steady growth month over month lends me to believe all the things we have tried to do with this little local paper have served us well and readers and advertisers appreciate what we are trying to do. I really do look forward to 2016 with the hope of being able to continue our work, providing readers with clear, concise and real news reporting along with colourful features on our West Niagara cast of characters. If we hit that mark, readers continue to read us cover to cover and advertisers are a happy bunch. It is a pretty simple formula. Happy New Year to all of you!!

Small piece of war-time treasured gift still remains About a month before WWII started my parents moved from London to a small village called Chorley Wood, about 20 miles northwest of the city. It was a nice house with four bedrooms, a bathroom upstairs and one lavatory (no wash basin) downstairs. When the blitz started, my aunt, uncle and cousin Anthony, and my grandmother came to stay with us. Two boys, John and Tony, sons of a friend of my mother also came to us for safety. With my parents and my baby sister Hazel and me we were now 10 in the house and we lived that way for 10 months. My grandmother got the guest room, my cousin, aunt and uncle got my room, and the nursery became the playroom. A sofa was moved into the dining room for me to sleep on along with a cot for Hazel, and that is where we slept along with John and Tony who slept on some
padding on the floor under the dining room table. The boys’ parents continued to live in London, but I guess they had some time on their hands with both sons living with us, so probably as a thank you to my parents they built a beautiful doll’s house for Hazel and me. It was really something, with a toy car that worked (I don’t know where they got that because toys were very scarce during the war), but all the furniture was handmade and all the bedding and curtains were hand stitched. We loved it. In 1950, when we were getting packed up to come to Canada, our mother told us we could each bring 10 small things with us. One of my 10 things was a little dining room chair from our doll’s house, and I have it to this day, sitting on a shelf in our dining room. Jennifer Scott
