Grimsby prepares to welcome 2015 Join neighbours and friends at the Peach King Centre on Wed., Dec. 31 from 2-6 p.m. for some family-friendly activities to welcome the new year. There will be free skating on both indoors pads from 2-5:45 p.m. and the outdoor rink (weather permitting). Inflatables, a craft station, concession stand and fireworks at 6 p.m. will be part of the mix. Park off-site and leave your dog at home during the fireworks.

Facial prosthetic delayed by complications Ida Guarascia now looking to late spring for new face
By Katherine Grant NewsNow It has been a long struggle and it isn’t over yet. Ida Guarascia, the Beamsville woman who underwent surgery last March to remove her right eye, her
nose and a large portion of the right side of her face, is at home recovering from a second operation. The surgery was supposed to have sculpted her new face to prepare it for a prosthetic eye and nose but complications have left her in a holding pattern for several more months. The good news is the
many small tissue samples taken during the operation came back clear – there is no sign of the basal cell skin cancer that destroyed her face. “It has been a rough year,” says Ida, quietly. During the most recent operation, her scalp had to be lifted, moved forward and attached to the patch over
her face. This necessitated another skin graft from her leg to the back of her head. A breathing tube was inserted and some plastic surgery was done to improve her line of vision by reducing the thickness of the large pouch of skin covering her face. “The eye surgeon straightened it as much as he could,

Ida has been told her case is unusual because of the extensive area affected by the cancer so doctors are taking it a step at a time and, while she remains grateful for the
care she is receiving, it is taking an emotional and physical toll on her. The delay of the prosthetic from January to possibly April or May was a real blow, on top of the need for more surgery and her limited mobility. “I feel like a guinea pig,” she said, adding she often finds herself in tears. As she is able to do so little she is feeling helpless, housebound and just wants something to which she can look forward. There have been, however, a few bright spots over the past few months. Although there are times when people are still cruel to her because of her appearance, there are those who go out of their way to be kind. “The Sobeys (store) in Beamsville has been just wonderful,” she

said. “Every single staff member says hello to me and asks how I am doing; they are so nice.” Although there are days she gives in to the tears, she hasn’t lost her fighting spirit. On a recent follow-up visit to one of her doctors, she told him he wasn’t allowed to take anything else. “They can’t take my fingers, my toes, my ears, no more body parts,” she said adding she enjoys teasing him. She had to undergo a procedure in his office in which he put a pair of scissors into her throat to trim her breathing tube. “He said he was proud of me and that made me feel better,” she said. She and her husband, Randy have a meeting with her team of doctors on Jan. 9 to talk about the next steps.

New appointments to police services board Regional Councillors David Barrick (Port Colborne), Bob Gale (Niagara Falls), and Andy Petrowski (St. Catharines); have been appointed to the Police Services Board by Regional Council on Dec. 18, for a four-year term (2014-2018), to replace Regional Councillors Gary Burroughs, Henry D’Angela, and former Regional Councillor Vance Badawey. The police services board is the civilian governance body for the Niagara Regional Police. Barrick and Petrowski are serving their second terms on Regional
Council and Gale his first. “I look forward to working with Regional Councillors Barrick, Gale and Petrowski. They will complement an experienced and dedicated group, intent on working with our Chief, Jeff McGuire, and the entire police service to ensure we have a safe and healthy community,” said Vaughn Stewart, police services board acting chair in a media release. The board members will be sworn by a Superior Court Justice Jan. 14 at a private ceremony at the court house in St. Catharines.

Teddy bear toss all for the kids Eight years and 8,000 teddy bears later, it hasn’t lost any of its power to draw smiles. Each year just before Christmas, the Niagara IceDogs hockey team, in partnership with Niagara Regional Police Service, invite members of the public to bring along teddy bears to toss out onto the ice. The toys are collected and shared with children in hospital over the holidays, community care agencies and Niagara victim services.

Ford sponsors ice scooters The Peach King Centre has some new ice scooter options for the arena. “The older versions just don’t stand up to the use that they get over time, particularly as we see older children using them to learn to skate,” said Sarah Sweeney of Grimsby Recreation Services. Grimsby Ford saw the value in this purchase, and agreed to sponsor the ice scooters. “Grimsby Ford is happy to be involved with young families in our community and assisting beginners learning to skate safely and confidently”, says Bob Clark of Grimsby Ford. The ice scooters are much larger than the older versions and they are heavier. The ice scooters will be available for use during all of the indoor public skating events including: Preschool Skating on Tuesday mornings (9:30-11 am), Public Skating on Thursdays (4-5 pm) and Public Skating on Sundays (3-4:30 pm). For open public skates the Peach King Centre sections off an area of ice for beginners and learners. The ice scooters will also be available during the Holiday Skates in December.

Join Hudak to celebrate new year MPP Tim Hudak is once again hosting his annual New Year’s Levee to celebrate the season and mark the arrival of a new year. “The annual New Year’s Levee is the perfect venue for people to chat with me about local issues, offer insight or advice, and to bring holiday greetings to each other,” says Hudak of the yearly events. “I’m looking forward to that relaxed and casual atmosphere to join with the men, women and children in my riding as we celebrate the New Year.”
As he does every year, Hudak will be collecting non-perishable food items for the local food banks to support Niagara West – Glanbrook families. “I’m proud that my constituents are so generous, and part of a caring community that looks out for its neighbours,” said Hudak. The Levee will be held Sunday, Jan 4, 2015 from 3-4:30 p.m. at Mike Weir Winery on Locust Lane in Beamsville. The event is free and open to all members of the community. • 2 lbs potatoes, cut in large chunks • 1-1/2tsp dill weed • 1/2tsp pepper • 2-1/4lb box (1kg) frozen cooked meatballs • 10 oz can cream of mushroom soup • 1 cup prepared
MEATBALL STEW • 1-1/2cups chopped onion • 3-1/2cups baby carrots

beef broth • 1/2cup water • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce • 1-1/2cups frozen peas Directions Layer onions, carrots and potatoes, in order given, in 5-7
quart slow cooker. Sprinkle with dill weed and pepper. Arrange meatballs on top. Combine next 4 ingredients in a bowl and pour over top of meatballs. Cook, covered, on low for 8-10 hours
or on high for 4-5 hours. Add peas during last half hour of cooking. Makes 8 servings. (You can use frozen pre-made meatballs or your own for this recipe and any variety your family likes.)

On Dec. 5, Silverdale Community held its 4th annual Turkey Dinner in support of West Lincoln Community Care. The guests were treated to a turkey dinner followed by scrumptious home baked pies. The community pulled together and raised $2,730 for Community Care. Jerry and Lorraine Laufman, owners of Lincoln Hearing Clinic, held a fundraiser in November and two local agencies are benefitting. McNally House Hospice and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln will split the $1,700 raised when $50 from the sale of each hearing aid in November was added up. With a circumstance as extreme as Ida’s, the medical forecast for her care is fluid. Things have not gone as initially projected with some forms of treatment being delayed due to matters which have arisen. NewsNow has received countless inquiries as to how she is doing and Ida appreciates the support she is receiving from the community. “Santa” comes to Niagara West Twas the night before deadline, when all through the town, Not a candidate was stirring, the election finally went down; The stockings were hung on the mantle with thought, In hopes that GO Train tix soon could be bought; The girls were snuggled all cozy in blankets, Not knowing their “new” Harmony Jewellers gifts were anklets; And mamma in ‘kerchief, and I in my chapeau, Had just settled down to enjoy the fireplace glow; When out on the street there arose such a ruckus, I sprang from the couch thinking a thief was to rob us; Away to window with nose pressed to glass, I wanted to see what was about to pass; The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre to main street and shops below; When what to my wondering eyes came to view, But a huge honkin’ sleigh, with St. Nicholas, too; More rapid than eagles his reindeer they flew, Nick was happy to see the stores come into view; He whistled and shouted and called them by name: Now, Teddy’s! now, Caliga! Now Main West and Objects! On, Shoppers! on, Cibo! on, Ardun! and Ruffins! To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall, Now shop away! Shop away! Shop away all! As leaves that before blew in a wind rough, Santa was on a mission to full his sleigh with stuff;
MIKE WILLISCRAFT To the top of Fisher Stevenson, his coursers they flew, With a list to be filled, he knew what to do; And then in a twinkling, recalling past years, He realized the many changes he could see here; As I drew my head in, and turned around quick, I realized the man in my den was really St. Nick. His clothes were all tarnished in ashes and soot, Said I, “See Manor Cleaners in Beamsville, the bill I will foot.” A empty sack he had flung on his back, Nick said, “Need to fill this thing quick and get back on track.” “Great art from Objects to Desire would be right, Framed nicely at Special Effects would cap the night.” His eyes – how they twinkled, his demeanor, so cheery! But something about him made me a little more than leery; His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, His beard was not right, so I just had to know; I gave it a tug to see if it was real,
And sure enough, fake! I was back on my heels; “Bob Bentley!?” I exclaimed as I fell back on a chair, “What happened to Nick and delivering toys with care?” He explained as he moved in his suit of red, fur and leather, He was helping Santa out since he was under the weather; Elf production was down to due to layoffs at the Pole, He knew no better place to shop, down Main Street he could roll; He sure had the look, pipe tight in his teeth, If Santa passes, this mission would he bequeath? “Not a chance,” said Bob as he finished up his work, Gifts dropped, stockings filled, he turned with a jerk; “I’ll use the door if you don’t mind,” said “Santa” as he left, Clearly I was wrong, there was no chance of theft; He scooted through the core, getting all the gifts needed, Other shoppers could learn from the words St. Nick heeded. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, – “Shop local you all, Niagara West shopkeepers will treat you right.” ...Apologies to Clement C.
