brick wall at the corner of St. Catharines and Griffin streets and it pulls you right into the heart of local history. Featuring five historic landmarks, the photos are a portrait of West Lincoln’s past

and a testament to the residents who are shaping the Township’s future. A major undertaking, it took a community of enthusiasts to get the project up and on the wall. They met

Tuesday morning to dedicate and unveil the plaque that graces the remaining section of the storied Murgatroyd Block building and now, the Murgatroyd parkette. “We’ve received

absolutely positive feedback from the community,” West Lincoln Mayor Dave Bylsma said at the ceremony. “It’s about remembering our past and respect for where we came from.”

Kathy Wetselaar, Chair of the West Lincoln Heritage Committee said many hands brought the project to completion, crediting West Lincoln planner Gerrit Boerema. See MURAL, Page 5

Eight new mental care beds for Niagara As part of the first wave of direct mental health and addictions funding, Niagara Health System is receiving eight new mental health beds. The move, which provincial government officials say is another step in fixing ongoing healthcare issues, invests in urgently-needed mental health and addiction services in the Niagara Region and engages with health care leaders, front line staff and people with lived experiences to address the critical gaps in the province’s mental health care system. “I have been asked over and over again from both constituents and stakeholders alike that we receive more mental health beds” said Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff.

Today, while a moratorium has recently put a hold on selling road allowances while the Town prepares its transportation master plan, Kirkopoulos said “now we would be doing things differently,” and there needs to be criteria and allowance for negotiation should the need arise. “Both sides need to come to the table and be willing to seek a solution,” Kirkopoulos said. Yarrow said she saw that stone had been placed last week on a portion of the unopened road allowance. She contacted the Town to enquire whether the farm owner had acquired that portion of the roadway. She said a town official responded they were not aware of the activity and would follow up. The Town responded that the stone was intended to provide for a temporary access for construction work at the Buys’ house, it was temporary to accommodate construction related to traffic such as heavy equipment and that once construction was completed, the gravel material would be removed and the road allowance restored back to existing conditions. Yarrow is hopeful the two parties can find a resolution. “Let’s move the access road so we can all live together as a happy community.” Yarrow said she is hoping and praying “that a wrong can be made right.”

NRP utilizing mandatory breath screening Niagara Regional Police conducted RIDE spot checks in the Town of Grimsby and City of Welland Dec. 18 as part of the festive R.I.D.E. season. This day marked the beginning of vast changes to our criminal impaired driving offences, as well as the new mandatory roadside alcohol screening. Mandatory roadside alcohol screening authorizes police to demand a breath sample from any driver that is lawfully pulled over by police. This new enforcement tool will significantly increase the number of drivers who are screened for impaired driving and in turn will help to prevent collisions, deaths and injuries on our roadways. Police say it’s important for the public to know that the chances of getting caught for impaired driving

will be high, now that any driver can be demanded to provide a breath sample after any lawful traffic stop. During the course of the evening, police spoke with approximately 800 drivers who entered the R.I.D.E. spot checks. Only a few drivers had admitted to consuming alcohol; however each one of these drivers were requested to provide a breath sample. In addition to these drivers, officers randomly selected vehicles to stop and each one of these drivers took part in the mandatory alcohol screening. It total police obtained breath readings from 85 drivers. As a result, the drivers from two of these randomly selected vehicles provide a breath sample that fell into the warning range and subsequently received a three-day suspension.

A Christmas shout out to all the volunteers who have made the host of Christmas season events happen this year. The event was the West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary’s Breakfast with Santa. Packed!

Thanks for your dedication Starting in late November, a series of events get run at fire halls, churches, community centres, restaurants, arenas and museums all over Niagara West. They all have one thing in common. They are run by dedicated volunteers. It may be a service club or a firefighters association, a business group or just a group of citizens getting together to help out someone in our community. It is importat to realize you get out of your community what you put into your community. For generations our area has been blessed with hundreds of dedicated people to make the area truly hum. That only happens with the commitment of time and energy. If you are looking for a New Years resolution, look no further than getting involved. Whether it is your local food bank, or the Kinsmen/Kinettes, Rotary, Lions or Kiwanis clubs, or giving time to coach youngsters, there are a lot of great avenues to choose and they all need you! Let’s set our sights on a great 2019 I have never been one to dwell on the past. I tend to look forward, get prepared and see what I can make of whatever is on the horizon, because you surely cannot change the past. But I really do have to pause and not, holy cow, what a year! It really is remarkable we, this mighty little news rag, are even here. Our 2017 wrapped up with us getting crushed under the wheels of two newspaper giants trading properties and shuttering dozens of publications across the province and canning a ton of employees. We lost a ton of weekly revenue which simply vanished, with the notice period ignored, in the melee which ensued. It will be interesting to see the findings of the federal Competition Bureau on that deal. I had a couple of lengthy conversations with them about all that: intensely interesting. Then, when we were struggling through the first part of year and the impact of that situation, we ended up having to tuck our entire office into the storage area of our 49 Main St W office so work could be done to install a fire barrier area in the ceiling this from an order coming from the fire department. Two weeks turned into four, then six, and it was killing us. Windows papered over during construction, some thought we were dead and gone, but they were perplexed the paper kept arriving at their door. Our walk-in traffic stopped. Advertisers could not find us. Some people think if a business closes (or appears to have closed as it did in our case) they don’t have to pay their accounts. Cash flow dried up. By the time mid-April rolled around we had been

MIKE WILLISCRAFT there two months and I had started looking for a new place as it was move or take our last gasp. Finally, a break, perfect, a friend was moving from one spot on Main Street to another. Quick phone call, lease arranged, move in date set, services contacted to transfer hydro, internet and such...all set. Or so we thought. Then we get sandbagged by a bylaw which only one out of the 15 Main Street land owners I talked to had heard about which does not allow for a service to locate on Main Street. Only retail was allowed. The bylaw was passed in 2014, but nobody was aware of it. I checked back on Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area board agenda and minutes all the way back to summer of 2013. Not a peep. I contacted the provincial and national newspaper associations to obtain letters noting the desire of virtually all communities who would welcome a community paper on their Main Street. After they were done, laughing, they sent the letters. With days left until we had to vacate, because I had already given notice we were leaving, everything came together in a matter of hours to get things on the rails for our current and hopefully

permanent home at 1 Mountain St. The first crisis was a huge problem for the business. The second crisis was a huge problem for the staff. And that is why I write all this as we close the books on 2018 and look AHEAD! My team is the Beatles of community newspapers - top of their game all the time, no challenge is too much and they always have a smile on their respective faces. Some days, when I feel like being grumpy, it can get annoying, but they get me through and I come out the other side just like them. Together, we have done some amazing things and we hope to continue that for as long as you - good reader and intensely supportive advertisers - allow us. My favourite thing this year was the extended coverage of Winona/Binbrook etc. we did to expand the readership on the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital issue. I got a letter from a fellow which made me smile... “Got your paper for the first time last week. It was great, original, but way too much Grimsby, Beamsville and Smithville content. If you don’t put more Stoney Creek/Hamilton info in, please stop delivering to me.” I sent him a note back to reiterate why he was getting the paper at all. He understood. We laughed. The comment made my whole year. We are ALL about the communities we serve. We’ve done some neat things and more planned, so let’s look ahead to 2019 and enjoy the ride! Happy New Year to all, especially my team: Catherine, Donna, Sheryl, Rose, Erica, Joanne, Tristan and Lisa, who all helped make 2018 a most memorable and rewarding year.
