Volunteers with St. John Ambulance will be at the Real Canadian Superstore, 361 South Service Rd. in Grimsby from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and they have an ambulance standing by – to be filled with food. Grimsby grow-op goes up in smoke By Katherine Grant NewsNow An illegal marijuana extraction lab was uncovered during the investigation into a Saturday afternoon fire that caused about $200,000 damage to a Grimsby greenhouse operation. Niagara Regional Police and the Fire Marshal’s office have now released the scene but the investigation is ongoing, said Acting Staff Sgt. Les Vuyk, 8 District, NRP. Although the extraction of hash oil and other marijuana byproducts can make the

process dangerous due to the flammable solvents used, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said Vuyk. “The Fire Marshal is reviewing the evidence,” he said adding there was nothing growing in the greenhouses and no one on the premises Saturday. The call for the Sobie Road fire came in just before 3:30 p.m. “The captain (Tim Leach) reported a fully involved structure fire upon arrival at the scene of the fire,” said

Grimsby Fire Chief Mike Cain. West Lincoln and Lincoln fire services sent tanker trucks to the scene. In total 16 fire trucks were deployed. “The working relationship we have with West Lincoln and Lincoln is nothing short of outstanding,” said Cain. “The crew did an excellent job of containing the fire and knocking it down,” said Cain. It took about 90 minutes to get it under control. The greenhouse had been the site of a legal marijuana growing operation but during the course of examin-

ing the site after the fire, firefighters thought things seemed amiss and police, already on scene, were notified, said Cain. “We always do an investigation post-fire and something potentially illegal was identified. As soon as the scene is determined to be suspicious or related to illegal activity the investigation takes a whole different direction,” said Cain. The outcome of the investigation will determine if criminal charges will be laid, said Vuyk.

Conrad Black visits Grimsby on book tour Lord Conrad Black made the Grimsby Author Series one of the final stops in his crossCanada tour Monday night. Black adddressed more than 275 attendees about his recently published book Rise to Greatness: the History of Canada, a study of Canada’s history from the earliest European settlement up to the present. Black spoke for 35 minutes without notes about the nature of Canada’s rise emphasizing that the country’s greatness did not come easily. Black also responded to questions. This is Black’s seventh book and attendees lined up to meet the 70-year-old historian, author, television host and media personality, who took the time to speak with attendees and sign copies of his book. “We had many first-time

Visitors toured the market place and hillside in search of a place to stay and were greeted by a chorus of angels announcing the birth of Jesus. “People get caught up in the commercial side of Christmas,” said Bain. “This is a way of get-

Hudak demands answers on hospital rebuild How many hospitals have been built, or promised, in the province since West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s re-build was cancelled by the Liberals? It’s a question MPP Tim Hudak wants answers to. Hudak recently filed a series of Order

Paper Questions with the clerk in the Ontario Legislature asking the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care if the rebuild of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) is on the Five Year Rolling Capital Plan, and if so, the scheduled timing of the project. The Order Paper also asks the Minister to provide a list of all the hospital capital projects that have been allocated since the March 2012 “cancellation” of the WLMH project. As part of the Order Paper, Hudak also asks for all of the documents detailing the criteria used to give certain projects higher priority. “I’m using every tool at my disposal to get the detailed answers my constituents deserve, keep the pressure up, and get that hospital built.” said Hudak, in a media release. Members of provincial parliament are able to submit up to 10 questions to the government via the Order Papers. The Order Paper Questions compel an answer, in writing, from the minister responsible. The Liberal government has delayed the project numerous times, including in the 2012 budget which specifically named four hospital projects in PC ridings that were cancelled or delayed while projects in Liberal held ridings proceeded, said Hudak. These Order Paper questions, points out Hudak, will require the minister to explain those actions, in writing.

Grimsby Santa Claus Parade 2014

Thousands welcome Santa Claus to downtown Grimsby Thousands of attendees lined the streets of Grimsby on Saturday night and were treated to hot chocolate, had their letters to Santa picked up and, in the spirit of generosity, donated more than 150 boxes of food for the Grimsby Benevolent Fund. The food drive was organized by the Grimsby Firefighters Association but a major fire could have derailed the effort. “It was ‘Houston, we have a problem’,” said Fire Chief Mike Cain. “Our firefighters were making their way to the parade when the call came in.” “It could have been a lot worse. The call for

the greenhouse fire came in at 3:15. We were all packed and ready to get in position for the parade for 4 p.m,” said firefighter Jeff Dancer, who, together with Jim Bergshoeff, organizes the parade food drive. “As we crested the escarpment, I looked over at Jim and we both said, ‘Uh oh!’ because we could both see all the smoke.” The fire was on Sobie Road and West Lincoln and Lincoln firefighters showed up to help. “With that support, we were able to cut a small contingent of firefighters loose so they could come back for the parade,” said Cain,

adding many family members volunteered to walk the route and collect the bags of food. Cain said he was proud of the way they stepped up. “It speaks volumes about the committment of our firefighters and their families that this happened seamlessly,” said the chief. The food will be distributed through the GBF’s Christmas Hamper program. “NewsNow did a great job promoting the event and getting those bags out. I didn’t have a single person say they missed it. It could not have gone better,” said Dancer.

Writer: Parking at hospital needs to be rectified Letter

Dear Editor, I am writing with regard to the $40 parking ticket I recieved. On Monday, Dec. 1, I had a specialist appointment at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. When I parked in the hospital lot, I managed to get the last parking space. I noticed that in the middle of the lot, people had parked facing north-south behind cars that were parked east-west. When I came out of the front of the hospital after my appointment, I noticed the front parking area was full and so people had parked on the other sde of the area on the sidewalk from the west driveway to the wast driveway. It was completely filled. Parking on the sidewalk was the reason for my ticket. On several occasions when I have had appointments at WLMH, I have had different staff tell me to park at the front on either side because parking is so bad. These are the reasons I parked there and got a ticket: I was told by staff and had witnessed double parking at the front by others. I parked at the front of the hospital Dec. 4 because I had to return for another specialist appointment. Now, I am the lucky one, with a $40 parking ticket, Merry Christmas. What happens to the people who can’t find a place to park and have to wait two to three months for their specialist appointment? What are they to do? Wait for another appointment and hope that on that day they can find a parking space? I don’t think so. Maybe the hospital needs a designated parking area with a shuttle service. Please don’t get me wrong. I love West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and the many services it provides. This is a huge problem and it is only going to get worse. This is not the fault of the parking bylaw officer, it is their job to enforce the bylaws. I have heard of people being late or totally missing their appointments because their was no space left.
