Sweat Equity opens at Grimsby Museum “Motivated by the desire for a home of their own and inspired by the ideals of the Co-operative Home building movement, 200 families from Hamilton gathered, then studied and in the end, (80) families committed to build their homes together in Grimsby, 20 miles east in the Niagara Fruit Belt”. The exhibition “Sweat Equity: Grimsby Co-operative Homebuilders 1953 – 1956” celebrates the 60th anniversary of this unique housing development in Grimsby, Ontario. It tells the story of the 80 families who studied, planned and worked together to build one of the largest cooperative housing movements in Ontario. Visitors are provided with an understanding of the key elements of the movement through photographs and archival material. Interviews and stories from the original families provide personal insight into their experiences and commitment to the project. In 1953, 500 people attended a meeting at Cathedral High School in Hamilton, Ontario where Fathers John Sherlock and William O’Brien discussed the co-operative housing concept. Two hundred people
committed to the project which required one year of study before any home construction began. In 1954 land was secured in Grimsby bounded by Olive Street, Lakeview Avenue, Murray Street and Lake Ontario and 80 families began to build their homes. A minimum of 30 hours per week was expected from each builder, this in addition to working at fulltime jobs in Hamilton. By 1956, all of the homes were complete. By 1954, 1200 families in Ontario were involved in the movement including co-operatives in Grimsby, Dundas, Lindsay and the Ottawa area. “Sweat Equity: Grimsby Co-operative Homebuilders 1953 – 1956” is on display at the Grimsby Museum until Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016. The Grimsby Museum is located at 6 Murray St. in Grimsby Ontario and is open Wednesday to Friday from 1-5 pm, Wednesday evening to 7 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 pm. Musical Ride packs agricultural centre With attendance at last week’s RCMP Musical Ride at West Niagara Agriculural Centre right around 3,000 organizers are exceedingly happy with the showcase event. With many eyes on West Lincoln native and Grimsby raised Lindsay Williamson, young and old packed the grounds on a hot, sunny August afternoon. “It is really exciting to be back,” said Lindsay. “We got here Tuesday, we do the show tonight, then it is back on the road first thing Friday morning.” While there was some concern about getting that large a crowd parked and settled in such a short time, all were patient and it worked out well, said ag centre general manager Albert Witteveen. “We received positive comments from all ages that attended We like to thank the community for coming out and supporting this patriotic event and funds that were raised will be reinvested into our facilities for everyone to enjoy.

Time for change at hydro: former CEO Dear Editor, As a retired CEO for Grimsby Hydro, I find the goings on extremely interesting. I remember a conversation with then Mayor Andreychuk, that Grimsby Hydro or any other public entity should never be owned by politicians. To understand part of today’s current set up, you need to go back in time. The provincial government of the day was downloading financial burdens on municipalities. Municipal hydro utilities had no debt and profits were rolled back in to keep rates low or to reinvest in capital projects. However, in the wisdom of government they made us assume debt and gave ownership to the municipality. This forced debt, promissory note, was the beneficiary of the municipality. This meant that hydro had to pay interest to the municipality.
Letter This interest was to offset some of the downloading of provincial expenses, or to create another hidden tax on taxpayers. Prior to today’s set up, in 2000, Grimsby Hydro was an anomaly. It was third in the province in productivity and efficiency and we did it with 16 staff. However, many of the changes caused by privatization were born by management and the office staff. We did the best that we could to maintain a high standard. But sometimes we failed given the rapid changes, lack of personnel and lack of Board understanding. If Grimsby Hydro had stayed the course, it would not be dabbling into cogeneration; having taxpayers guaranteeing loans; or having more politicians sit as Board members. But, most of all, this embarrassing situation should not be tak-
ing up valuable aldermans` and the general publics` time. We need a clean sweep of the existing Board(s). Through all of this debacle - cogeneration, biodigester and formation of New Holdco 2 - you need to seriously consider who is actually running Holdco One. No it is not the previous or current CEOs of Grimsby Power, the wires company that sends you your bill each month. It is a select few wanting their 15 minutes of glory. Well, you have had more than 15 minutes now. I just hope some of the stink stays with you and that the general public finds out just who you are. Or do you have more fall guys? Brian Weber P.S. Old school Sunday at Smithville United There was some good, old-fashioned clock-turning in Smithville Sunday afternoon at Smithville United Church. For anyone who happened by the West Street spot could not have missed the massive gathering on lawn. The idea was to reenact old-style church Sunday’s when it would be very much a social affair with food, entertainment for all, not just the churchgoers themselves. Judging by the turnout, with members from other area churches as well as passersby by stopping in to enjoy the classic hospitality, it was a huge success. Well done to organizers. Great to see the church’s 225th anniversary celebration is going very well! M.W.
What a night in downtown Grimsby As Saturday night unfolded, I wanted to duck into my office and start pounding on the keyboard. There was such tremendous feelings, emotion, respect and, yet, regret, sadness and sympathy as well over 3,000 - if you include those who chanelled the sidewalks east on Main from the closed off area - stuffed themselves into downtown Grimsby for Get Hip 4 Cancer. I had to look back in my email as it was so long ago, but June 20 I spotted a post online about Gage Park in Hamilton hosting a Hip-related event. I thought, “Pfft, we can do that!” Since the core was a perfect spot to host, I emailed Matt Russo asking if the team at 40 Public House would be interested. BOOM! It was all in motion before I left the table from our meeting and IT WAS ON! The fact it went off without a hitch is testament to the effort of those behind the scenes. I enlisted staff, family members, FORT volunteers, you name it. Some things just didn’t get done but, like a wedding, only the couple getting married or the organizer know what went as planned and what didn’t. What did go was pretty special. I am not big on naming people with thank you’s because it is too easy to miss someone and I sure hope I don’t but, here goes: Calvin and Ruth Cutts, great magic show et al. Food vendors who whipped up fresh, local food, You Had Me At Pizza, Cibo’s, Puddicombe Farms and Sobeys Grimsby and Beamsville for teaming to
MIKE WILLISCRAFT donate burgers and all the fixins’. Huge appreciation. Grimsby Hyundai supplied free COLD water to the masses all night. Niagara Inflatables who supplied two great set-ups and our snowcone machine for essentially a delivery charge - much appreciated. We had sponsors who stepped in at many turns to help with some incidentals: Chris Tew, Southcott Davoli, Forty Creek Distillers, New Life Church, Fisher Stevenson Boehm Insurance, Lynn Fee, Real Canadian SuperStore, Boo’s Bar/Butterballs and, of course, the 40 Public House. I had planned to be the burger chef on Main Street but started to think it might be better if I could float and help wherever. At one point Friday I’m talking to Rob Hattin about Niagara Power and somewhat jokingly ask if he wants to cook burgers. Crazy dude agreed! Tina Seaton - of Grimsby Sub Shop fame - had offered to help, but next thing you know, Mama (Tina’s real mom and everyone else’s surrogate) elbowed her way in and pushed everyone out. She had her own social circle going all night and it
was great to see her back on Main Street! If I missed someone, my most sincere apologies. Having organized scores of events over the years, I really had no idea what to expect Saturday. I thought if we got 350-400 it would be a success. There was that many with lawnchairs in place by 6:30 p.m. it was just plain cool. And it is important to note, it was nothing that anyone did. Myself and 40 Public fellas were just enablers for what was a dynamic force in Gord Downie. Make no mistake. Nobody was there because I ran an ad or we had donation-only burgers. The window dressing facilitated an opportunity to raise a few dollars at an event created to be free to all. The message and theme of the whole thing is what is truly important here. You want reality TV people? Tell me how it got more real than that! A man doing what he loves, for our benefit, perhaps for the last time. Pick any band or performer in the world. Do you think anyone else would draw 3,000-plus to downtown Grimsby for a televised show. No way. It was a national circumstance. There were young families, people in their 80s and everyone in between. I am quite sure many had never heard a Hip song, but that is not why they were there. I was doing that goofy social media stuff through the night, trying to convey the scene, any photo or verbiage was hopeless. Simply put, that night was about courage.

We need clarity not obfuscation: reader Dear Editor, I had to laugh when reading Alderman Steve Berry’s letter in the Aug. 18 issue of NewsNow. It provided nothing but obfuscation while avoiding specific issues raised by Wayne Fertich, Mike Williscraft and others, rather than providing any meaningful answers. Ald. Berry’s letter was full of fluff such as his time on council, how he is remunerated, that he is proud of the town and council and other blah, blah nonsense. Mr. Berry, this may come as a surprise to you but as a taxpayer I couldn’t care less about your fluff statements. A number of important questions have been left unanswered by members of the current council. Grimsby taxpayers have a right to demand absolutely clear answers. We can do without the obfuscation. Taxpayers are not stupid. Legal opinions cost money. We all know that one of the
Letter main reasons a legal opinion is sought is to help assess a potential action or future liability. Do taxpayers in Grimsby actually know what specific action(s) council is considering that would cause it to secure a legal opinion in the first place? No. This has never been made clear. As elected officials Alderman Berry and the rest of council have an obligation to provide a clear explanation of all relevant issues. To Ald. Berry’s Aug. 18 letter I have the following comments on some of his specific comments: 1. “the majority of council is responding to the issues at hand”. And what are those ‘issues at hand’ Steve? Taxpayers have a right to know SPECIFICALLY what they are, not some silly statement about a previous legal agreement needing to be ‘cleaned up’. 2. “we have issues at
NPI that we are doing our best to resolve”. Good to know Steve, but exactly what are those issues? As taxpayers we own the utility and we have a right to know. 3. “the advice from our lawyers is why we have proceeded the way we are”. That tells us nothing Mr. Berry. To what issue(s) was that advice pertaining? That is the real question. 4. “continue to enhance the value of the company”. WOW…that is a statement loaded with inference isn’t it! Why would council be concerned about enhancing the value of the company (i.e. Grimsby Hydro) unless the members of council have been contemplating selling this public asset? By-the-way did any of you run on a platform that specifically included selling Grimsby Hydro? Not that I can remember. That means that council has NO legitimate mandate from the public to even contemplate such an action. Is
Grimsby council actually considering the sale of Grimsby Hydro? The answer is clearly ‘Yes’ as shown by a statement in your letter. 5. “from a business perspective with a growing customer base the time to sell NPI is not now and far as I know the majority of council feels the same way”. This is a blatant admission that council is, or has been, considering the sale of Grimsby Hydro and that some members are still leaning in this direction. To my point 4) above, you folks have NO MANDATE from the public to take this action. Wait until the next municipal election and put selling Grimsby Hydro in each of your platforms. Then, see if you get reelected. I have no idea how other folks will vote, but I will definitely vote against anyone on council who would be so shortsighted as to sell off an important, strategic asset like Grimsby Hydro. 6. “people that are not working towards the

Rather than pout about a lack of public support perhaps if you clearly informed the public regarding these ‘goals of council’ there may be more support. Or, perhaps if the public actually knew what council was up to there would be a higher level of opposition. Is that what you’re actually afraid of Ald. Berry? A very legitimate question was raised about how the valuation of $12 million on Grimsby Hydro was determined. Council members have put their individual tails between their legs and ran away from answering that one numerous times. I think an even more important question is why the Town of Grimsby even needed to get such a valuation done in the first place. Oh yeah, we covered that one already…you folks on council want to sell Grimsby Hydro without any public mandate to
do so. As Wayne Fertich has pointed out the town has already wasted over a million dollars on the COGEN project that is still only partially operational. That is the equivalent of taking $40 out of the wallets of every single man, woman and child living in this town. The ineptitude of the COGEN decisions make me cringe thinking about what council may be considering for Grimsby Hydro. Ald. Berry, rather than whining in the newspaper about being ‘insulted’ or about your ‘integrity being questioned’, you would be much further ahead by simply being open and honest with Grimsby taxpayers. We have every right to demand that of you and everyone else on council. Remember, you work for us...you may want to remind your fellow members on council about that fact. Tom Stirr Grimsby
