Stalwart Guardian in action; war games now afoot By Katherine Grant For NewsNow Most Niagara residents saw the Canadian military vehicles and soldiers which poured into town last week to set up camp for a major training exercise – but there were also enemy soldiers among us, though many remained blissfully unaware. “We are behaving as though this is a military action,” said
Capt. Stew Briggs, Communications Officer. “We are acting as though we are contending with a fictional enemy and they are out there.” The exercise – the first not taking place on a military base but instead in a large populated area – is called Stalwart Guardian. This year, Sproston’s Our Gate to Your Plate on Elm Tree Road West in Grimsby will participate again. He is planning a Thanksgiving hamper draw with all the proceeds going to BBBS. Also involved this year
are: Suzie’s Gluten Free Kitchen, De La Terre Kitchen, August Restaurant, Sentimental Farms and Puddicombe Farms. Each participant will have a fundraising component planned for Aug. 30, but some have stretched things out over several days. August will sell mini peach pies which serve two people for $8, with all proceeds to BBBS. The pies will be available from Friday, Aug. 29 to
Sunday, Aug. 31. Feel like a homemade pizza, better yet, a homegrown pizza? Sentimental Farms will have pizzas made with organic flour topped with their own seasonal produce. Inside several tents, information is being gathered from troops on reconnaissance and direction is being given on how to proceed. Maps of Niagara are spread out on conference tables and targeted areas are marked as intelligence is gathered. “As we receive information updates, we direction troops on tasks in defined areas,” said Briggs. Reconnaissance provides a picture of what “normal” is, of those “patterns of life,” said Briggs. “When something changes, you need to ask: is there a covert operation going on, is the enemy pillaging materials or planning something?” Briggs spent eightand-a-half months in Kabul in 2012 as a communications officer advising members of the Afghan military. “There was nothing we could teach the Afghan army about Afghan, they knew their own country.

Canadians as foreign advisors understand how to tactically win a battle in a way that doesn’t degrade the action but instead maintains national honour.” For example, had this been a real military engagement, there wouldn’t be troops set up anywhere near school yards or there would be the accusation that soldiers were using school children as shields. “This would never happen,” said Briggs. Canada enjoys a reputation as a peaceful country that respects and embraces multiculturalism. “We have enjoyed 200 years of relative peace,” said Briggs referring to the War of 1812. He did note there would have been a number of arrests for war crimes after that conflict. One can’t just burn entire towns to the ground, he said with a smile. Calls from people sitting on their brains The emergency responders at 911 are getting a lot of bum calls these days. Literally. Of course they have always received a lot of screwy calls. There was the California woman who made an angry 911 call because Burger King served her a normal burger and not the Western Bacon Cheeseburger that she ordered. There was the Nashville woman who despite being warned to stop, kept calling 911 complaining that her boyfriend was refusing to marry her. And it must have been very tempting for the Florida cop who responded to 80 911 requests from a Pinellas County Jail

The result of most “butt dials” is annoying but harmless for the 911 responders who sit there listening to dance music or construction site sounds or babies gurgling with no one on the line. Yet some “butt dials” are actually working out pretty well for the police. When dispatchers in Portland, Oregon received a “butt dial” at the switchboard they almost hung up until they realized they were listening in on a drug deal. Using GPS, they tracked the meth dealer to an alley just a block from the police station. For possession and delivery of drugs, Raleigh Reynolds will
accidental “butt dial” from a Waffle House in Georgia were arrested for possessing way, way more than the Pecan Waffle Plate with sausage and a side of grits. Poor Douglas Wolaver of Sidney, Ohio. Not only did his “butt dial” lead police to the house he was burglarizing but ... and if it wasn’t for bad luck this guy would have none at all ... the low battery in his cell phone started beeping and gave away his hiding place too! Similarly in a forest in Arkansas, two female criminals alerted 911 police with an accidental “butt dial.” Their exact location was pinpointed when the screen on their cell phone lit up. A least one “butt dial” call has caused an ethical dilemma. A woman in Winnetka, Illinois received a “terrifying cell phone

My problem with this is that anytime rap music is heard in public I think the SWAT team should be sent in! Another Zanon joins the denturist team Nick Zanon has long been a fixture in dad Carlo’s denturist operation on Elm Street in Grimsby. Nick, from about the age of 16, helped out in the office by making dental appliances. So it wasn’t much of a surprise when he took things to the next level and entered into a three-year program at George Brown College to become a denturist. Nick is a graduate of Blessed Trinity Secondary School. “I’ve always been a health sciences kind of guy, so this fits,” said Nick, now 24 and working along side his dad. It is satisfying work, says Nick. Like his dad, he
enjoys working with people on improving issues associated with having dentures such as a poor fit making it difficult to eat or improving the appearance of dentures which can work wonders for self-esteem. Carlo has been in business for about 35 years but has remained up to date in current techniques, said his son. Carlo regularly takes his expertise on the road and instructs other denturists. After taking his two-day course, countless U.S. denturists have become certified in the making and fitting of anti-snoring devices in cities such as Washington and Las Vegas where Carlo

Local author finds ‘Fountain of Youth’ Imagine a world in which no doctors are necessary; where any illness can be held at bay by drinking a bit of berry extract. Grimsby’s Marlene Rizzuto imagined just that and then put pen to paper, so to speak. The new author has written and published her first book. It was always a goal of Rizzuto’s to write a book. It took about eight months to write, she added. The story is a work of fiction, set 400 years into the future in Canada. A discovery has been made
and it is being touted as the “Fountain of Youth.” There are three main characters in The Berry Extract, all women: Agnes – named for Rizzuto’s grandmother – Bethany and Sylvie. The extract has special properties and soon people begin to see changes in the world. “I just have an imagination,” she explained. “When you get older, you think about your health and how you can improve it.” She is planning on writing as many as 10 more books to

Ralph S. Misener in canal collision in 1964, scrapped by 1970 By Skip Gilham For NewsNow It was 50 years ago last June 16 that the Canadian bulk carrier Ralph S. Misener was in a collision with the American vessel Benjamin F. Fairless.
Shipwreck The accident occurred south of Thorold, in the Welland Canal. The Benjamin F. Fairless was found at fault as it got too close
to the bank in preparation for passing the Canadian ship. The stern was pulled in by the suction causing the bow to veer into the path of the steamer. Damage was listed in the $30,000 range. The Ralph S. Misener was built
at Port Arthur and, from 1922 until 1954, sailed as Mathewston. It reverted to the original name in 1967. The vessel came down the Welland Canal for the last time on May 31, 1970.

When do you connect your kid? Yep, summer is over. Did you miss it? If you are like most, you feel like you went right from a frigid March to that cool air we’ve been feeling which says, “The leaves are about to turn.” Part of that feeling of an approaching fall is getting kids ready to go back to school – a precious time of year for all those stay-athome-parents out there. It used to be that parents would feel the pressure of providing a cool lunch box or backpack for their kids. And clothes, oh yes, clothes are key. Name brands, trendy colour, and just the right shoes; all are musts, right? For status seekers that is certainly true and, if it is not the child wanting to look the part, it is often the parent who wants to give their children everything possible. Now, I don’t want to stereotype, as there are kids out there who earn everything they get – and more power to them. But there are a lot of “entitled” kids out there who demand everything they want and not just now, but yesterday. The technological age has set a ridiculous standard for immediacy. Want something? Go find it online. Want a drink? Go to a drivethru. Oh, you need money? Go to a drive thru. Need to plan your outing first? Get on your phone and text them to see where they are. Clearly, this is the age of cell phones and teens. For many, this is completely out of the financial question, but many make major
MIKE WILLISCRAFT sacrifices to make sure their kids are electronically connected to the world. It was not that long ago cell phones were a luxury. Now, just about any kid over 12 (if that) gets a second look if their friends hear they don’t have their own phone. And parents, the whole guise of saying, “Oh, it is just for emergency purposes” is a waste of time. Nobody is buying that. When the unlimited texting gets thrown in for a couple of bucks on any plan, that hooks the kids and it is game over, so get used to that. American Express just released the findings of a study which asked parents what they believed was the right age for a child to get a cell phone. Thoughts... anyone? How about 12, Grade 7? From what I see around the area, that is a couple of years older than a lot of kids I see walking down main street texting away. The study found 64 per cent of tweens 10-14 will have cell phones this year. Parents believe the acquisitions are imperative for their kids’ safety and
socializing. Yes, they are a nice security blanket, but so is just asking where they are going and paying general attention. But that is a column for another day. The socializing aspect is paramount to kids and so instantly ingrained in their psyche it will not be dissipating any time soon. Who has not driven in a car taking multiple teenaged daughters and friends “to the mall” (or insert other excursion here) hearing nary a word but all four, heads down, thumbs ablaze as they chat away not to tell other friends where they are going, but with the girl right next to them as they figure out where they want to go first. No wonder shows like Big Bang Theory are huge hits. The age of the socially inept, conversationally challenged is upon us. So, to enable such ineptitude, parents in the study estimated they would spend well over $500 on electronics this year, with more than $1,100 in the calendar year...per child. Granted, if the parents have an American Express card they have the means to keep Apple in fine working order. So, yes, the cell phone is now a permanent member of the school status pecking order system. It does not matter that kids are supposed to leave them in their lockers (in high school) and such. They still need just the right cool case, bejewelled, whatever. Does it make sense? No, but that never stopped a trend.

Huge car show hits Jordan this Sunday If cars are your passion, better make your way to Jordan this Sunday. The Reunited Car Show is expected to draw thousands of visitors, says organizer Blair Holierhoek. The show, set for Sunday, Aug. 24, will feature the finest lowriders, tuners, trucks, custom cars and motorcycles in southern Ontario at Jordan Lions Park on Fourth Avenue. Featured events will be a lowrider hop off ($2000 cash prizes), car and truck limbo contest, RC car racing, over 55 car and truck classes, bikini contest, and more than 200 trophies will be awarded. Proceeds will go to the Jordan Lions and Autism awareness. Among those bringing along a custom show car is Kristine Danton. Danton bought her 2003 Sunfire back in 2007. It was in new condition at the time – no modifications.
She then set to work on her own labour of love and added a number of customized components. Danton did all the work herself. “My dad was a Pontiac fan and so am I,” she said, adding she worked side by side with him from the time she was little and also learned a lot from her friends in the car community. Her efforts have paid off with a number of honours. The top prize to date was when she earned Best in Show Tuner at the GM Powertrain show in August 2011. “A really well done show car is a work of art,” said Danton, adding in this particular art form, the car is the medium. “The best thing about it isn’t the trophies, it is about getting to see the friends you’ve made.” This Sunday’s show will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.
