Residents’ dumping concerns fall on deaf ears By Mike Williscraft NewsNow While some residents in the area of Kemp and Mountain roads in Grimsby want an immediate halt to the deluge of fill dumping underway, it would seem an intervention is not forthcoming.
Mike Blanchette, who lives at the corner of Mountain and Kemp said he had enough weeks ago. “There have been a ton of issues, aside from the dust and noise. Today (Monday) I have had a Bobcat stuck in the middle of
the road at the end of my laneway. They can’t figure out how to get it going,” said Blanchette. “Saturday morning it took me 20 minutes to get onto Mountain Road because of the line up of dump trucks, so, yes, it has not been good.”
He said he called town hall twice and left voicemails. Neither call was returned. “I can’t see that they would be that busy,” said Blanchette. He said the difference in this occurance and an issue he had recently with the town
regarding a pool in his backyard has been stark. “They hounded me about not having the pool gated. They were all over us. They even had (someone) come and peak over our fence to see if we had water in the pool.
We have never put any water in the pool, but that is beside the point,” said Blanchette. “Right now, they have hundreds and hundreds of dump trucks dumping who knows what in a sensitive environment.” See DUMP, Page 2

From Page 1 “Nobody is thinking of the outcome here,” added Blanchette, who has live in his current home since 2001. Last week, Grimsby CAO Derik Brandt was contacted to provide the Town’s position and background on what bylaws in place could allow officials to do. He said the Town had no bylaw in place to enforce any controls over the Kemp Road situation, but staff had set about researching other municipality’s bylaws to prepare something for the future. Monday, Mayor Bentley said little could be done at this time. “Staff have been monitoring the situation and have been on site multiple times, NPCA has also investigated, testing has been done and no con-
taminates have been found to date but we continue to monitor the situation,” said Bentley in an email. “Ministry of Energy and Climate Change has also been engaged to review the process. No violations to our current policies have been found but we are currently looking to strengthen our current bylaws with a new ‘fill ‘ bylaw shortly.” For Joseph Majetic, who is just a few doors down Kemp, “shortly” is not quick enough. Aside from the core issue at hand here, he too, wonders about the Town’s priorities. Majetic said he has called the Town about the ditch which has been filled in near his property to the point water is now backed up for a long stretch. “I told Bentley about it. He didn’t seem to care. Heck, everybody
is upset up here about the trucks and dumping but there seems to be different rules for up here,” said Majetic, citing long-term, ongoing dumping which has been going on at a Woolverton Road site for about three years. Blanchette said not only does the Town not seem to be concerned about the impact of the truck traffic or the dumping, he is still scratching his head over what he saw before it all got going. “It was the Town of Grimsby trucks up here creating the culvert and filling in the ditch so there trucks could get on the property. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he said. When pressed for clarification on why the Town did not see fit to implement a fill-related bylaw when the Woolverton Road issue had been onoing for years,
Bentley’s comments took a turn. “No violations have been recorded to date with any of our bylaws and no violations have been found with this recent issue so whatever your new forty group wants you to present is good with me as fake news appears to be in vogue for the flyers,” wrote Bentley. “I haven’t seen you report on the illegal grow ops yet as I believe that might be more of an issue in our municipality but your group haven’t identified it to you yet and you may not like the answers.” When pressed again, Bentley added, “You have already stated your negative position publicly without consulting the municipality so who cares what the reality is. Anything negative regarding the municipality is news worthy for you so I don’t even read that

I am dealing with the illegal grow issue separately.” Grimsby resident Kurt Whitnell also counts himself among those looking for answers and he says he lucky to be counting on anything today. “That many more dump trucks going up and down only increases what is already a nasty, nasty safety concern on Mountain street,” noted Whitnell in an email sent to Reg. Coun. Tony Quirk, Ald,. Michelle Seaborn, Ald. Dave Kadwell, Ald. Nick DiFlavio and Ald. Carolyn Mullins. “Case in point, my family and I came within inches of getting rearended at the bottom of Mountain Street yesterday (Wednesday). If we had not pulled forward a dump truck would have been in the rear seat of our vehicle where our son, Lucas,
was sitting. No drama, here just facts and a real need for answers.” Majetic would like answers too, but he is not expecting them. “The Town should be able to stop the fill now, have time to figure out if things are right, check paperwork, check the quality of the fill and if everything is good, then they continue,” said Majetic. “To let them dump thousands of loads, then you poke around, that is not good enough. The Johnson and Forty creeks are right there. Who knows what is in the run-off with all this rain?” “I told the mayor it is unfortunate they are just like weathermen. They can get things all wrong and still keep their jobs. I told him he will have to answer to a higher power but he thinks nobody is a higher power than him.”

Grimsby merchants look to bounce back from fire It won’t be to the scale of Happening at The Forty, but Grimsby downtown merchants are hoping making the core a beehive of activity this Friday night will help get area residents utilizing their shops, services and restaurants again. Many business owners have seen a marked decline in foot and vehicle traffic since the July fire which claimed three businesses and an apartment. One long-term effect has been a partial road closure on Main Street at Ontario Street which has pushed the
Farmers Market out to Peach King Centre’s parking lot and also pushed consumers elsewhere. To help bring everyone back downtown, the Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area Board has planned an evening of fun for all this Friday night, Aug. 18. From 5:30-8:30 p.m. there will be lots of entertainment, including: Josh Coulter singing, Calvin’s Mingle Magic, face painting and balloon animals, Silver Elvis, Plinko, Punch Board, GAMRU, Grimsby Lions barbecue and more.
There was some consideration of waiting until Main Street was full open, but with the summer quickly evaporating, this Friday seemed like the best spot. The tenders for demolition of the burned out buildings closed July 27 but work has yet to get underway. “I think it is great to do a little showcase like this and get people thinking about coming downtown to see us,” said Melissa Silva, who operates Tous Jours Footwear & Fashion. “We’re all here and we have a lot to offer.”

Grimsby’s Lucas Celia, Ryan Holland and Christian McAlpine were members of the gold medal winning U-17 Men’s Eight, while Dana Warren of Beamsville was the coxie with the Sr. Men’s 64 kg. Coxed Four. The Henley had more than 2,800 competitors from all around the world this year. The Niagara West contingent was competing as member of the St. Catharines club. Great day for soap box racing in Beamsville The Beamsville and District Lions Club 1st Annual Soapbox Derby, Saturday, Aug. 12, was a huge sucess. The day was filled with sun, laughter, cheering and excitement on the faces of the 23 youngsters who participated in the event in the three divisions held at the Great Lakes Christian High School. The Stock Car Division had 16 entries, all sponsored by local businesses and organizations. These cars were built from kits purchased from All American Soap Box Derbies of Akron, OH Sponsors had their names and logos on the cars. The winner of the Stock Car division was Isaac Bucknall, driving the car sponsored by George Stephenson, CA. Bucknall is now eligible to participate in the International Soap Box Derby in Akron in July 2018 Coming in second was Tessa Riediger driving the Tim Horton’s car and in third place was Ty Fielding driving the car sponsored by Fielding Estate Winery. The Little Rascals Division featured five cars built from kits or built from bits and pieces found in dad’s or granddad’s garage. Grier Cooper was the overall winner with Cole Fielding coming in second and Cameron Saliba was the third place finisher. The SuperKids Division, is specifically for special needs children who race in specially built cars, assisted as needed by Stock Car drivers. All SuperKids are winners. First place finisher Connor McPhee is
eligible to participate in the SuperKids International Derby in Akron. During the event, assisted by community volunteers, the Town of Lincoln, Great Lakes Christian High School and a large number of Lions, the Lions club hosted the Soap Box Derby and operated their chip wagon with ice cream and souvenir clothing sales. “It was a truly wonderful day for the youngsters, their families, our community and for Lions,” said event organizer Lion Gord Gerrie.

Dave Kadwell) Good morning Mr. Mayor, and my Ward 2 alderpersons, I have never written a letter to a politician or an editor’s column in my life, but feel I must speak up now. I am truly fed up with a few locals trying to “stir the pot” and create an issue out of nothing. Yes, I am referring to the ongoing saga of “Saving The Woodlot”. I am one of the silent majority who will not put a

The issue of urban sprawl, and expanding neighbourhoods is a fact of life that some people are not content with. They want to stop further growth and change - but only after their home and subdivision was built, as if to say “I’m here now, but everything else I don’t want has to stop”.
Everyone in Grimsby already has access to a world class woodlot where we can enjoy nature - it’s called the Niagara Escarpment, and includes The Bruce Trail. This issue gained momentum prior to our last municipal election, when certain candidates tried to create an atmosphere of discontent with our local council so that they had an opportunity for change - an opportunity that otherwise wouldn’t exist as the silent majority is pretty content with the way that you are managing our town. Bring back the three-year terms There has been such focus with Grimsby’s administration to make Grimsby great again, significant issues have been left by the wayside in the wake of huge cost overruns and lack of attention. With the mish-mash adjacent, there was no need to edit or change a word. You see the level of interest in representing the people of the community laid right out for you. People are super cheesed off with the truck traffic issue, magnified in this case with unknown fill being dumped en masse at a Kemp Road West location. No bylaw is being infringed upon, says the mayor. Uh, hello, exactly the issue. General disdain and malaise, par for the course. I am sure Kurt Whitnell, who nearly had his car crushed by a dump truck last Friday on Mountain Street is impressed, as I am sure are others. M.W.
You have to read it to believe it Ask for basic information on an important issue and this is what you get - from Monday. Hi Bob, Can I get a couple of comments on the situation at 42 Kemp. In the last 10 days I have talked to upwards of a dozen residents with concerns varying from truck traffic in the core, to traffic on Kemp itself, in addition to environmental impacts of dumping whatever is being dumped at 42 Kemp W. There really is a whole lot going on there, as you know, so it may be best if you could give me any info you have and would like to share with the community. I understand the fill is pretty much covering a 14 acre area at the joint of Johnson’s Creek and Forty Mile Creek. All neighbours are concerned with ground water issues from run-off. An immediate neighbour told me the fill brought in is now being capped with top soil in places so it will be much more difficult to assess just what has been brought it. One man, Joseph Majetic, called me to say (noting you had called him back when he was out cutting grass) he left you a message asking for a emergency meeting of council to get something passed to halt the situation, so some assessment could be done before possibly allowing it to continue. Dear Editor, I have read your article pertaining to the dumping on Kemp Road. I live on Woolverton Road and the dumping has been taking place for several years. The height of the mounds are visible as one drives by. Some of us have water wells here. Run-off could be a concern, no doubt. The main reason I write to you, is the subject of By-laws. I also have a neighbor who insists on backyard fires. According to by-law, open-air burning is prohibited in the town of Grimsby. It is impossible to open ones windows on a cool night, for the pungent smell. Keep in mind our lots here are considered large to some, but 200 ft X 75 ft, is not large enough when it is smokey. We complained to the Grimsby Fire department about their fires. The Fire Prevention Officer paid them a visit, and told them to “control the smoke”. The wind up
