By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Back in late April, early May, the West Niagara Fair’s board of directors had two choices: cancel the 2014 edition of the fair, or; pull out all the stops in getting the fair back at Smithville Fairgrounds. “There really was no choice. We had to beg, borrow and plead but we were
able to get it all set up at the old fairgrounds,” said board president Stephen Capell. The 2013 edition was to be the only version of the West Niagara Fair to be held in Smithville. NewsNow broke the story back on Dec. 24, 2013 that work on the $4 million new fairgrounds had started. See PLANS, Page 3
“Save the woodlot” takes root By Katherine Grant For NewsNow The campaign to save the woodlot at the west end of Livingston Avenue is quickly picking up steam. Since the story broke in NewsNow last week, support is building across Grimsby, says woodlot owner Ja Irish. “I’ve been run off my feet,” said an elated Irish. “We had 150 lawn signs and I’ve had to order 50 more.” Irish’s 25-acre Grimsby
woodlot is being threatened by a proposed extension of Livingston Avenue. The Region of Niagara is carrying out an Environmental Assessment for the proposed extension of the road from Casablanca Avenue to Oakes Road. The proposed road would cut through the heart of the woodlot threatening its continued existence. “I have had calls from people who said they
would do whatever we needed help with,” he added. “I’ve had lots of positive feedback, there are people who feel the region should put money into repairing the roads they have.” Grimsby’s Reg. Coun. Debbie Zimmerman is opposed to the roadway going through – for a number of reasons. “There is no need to extend Livingston,” said Zimmerman. The road would only
go as far as Oakes Road which is a secondary road which runs north/south. “We don’t need another road that goes nowhere. We already have the service road for east-west access,” said Zimmerman who has voiced her thoughts to the Town of Grimsby and Niagara region staff. “While I understand the overall planning for future capital road work within the Town of Grimsby, it is See TREES, Page 2

The land is outside of Grimsby’s urban area, traverses a significant woodlot and demonstrates little traffic need,” she said, adding she was disappointed to learn the region was looking to extend Livingston instead of making needed and costly repairs to Reg. Rd. 81. “This would just be a colossal waste
of money, I would much rather see the money used to get a transit system in place,” said Zimmerman. “Every day I get calls from people who need affordable transportation. We need a link to Grimsby, no more navel gazing. With GO hopefully coming in 2015, now is the time,” she said. It is her hope that the Town of Grimsby takes an active role in opposing the proposed road ex-
tension and instead pushes for the transit link. According to Cam Milne, Niagara Region’s project manager, the project was initiated as a result of recommendations made as part of the Town of Grimsby Transportation Planning Study in 1995. “The recommendation to extend Livingston Avenue was made almost 20 years ago,” said Milne. “It’s appropriate to review that recommendation to determine if the need and rationale is still justified with consideration for past development in the area and future development including GO transit.” “The Class Environmental Assessment is currently in the initial phase of the Class EA study which involves inventories of existing conditions and determination of need and justification for improvements,” he added. Specifically, there will be field investigations for fish-

This will enable the completion of impact assessment for the various alternatives.” The land is protected under Greenbelt legislation but that may not stop the road from going
through. “Based on a preliminary review of the Greenbelt Protection Plan, it appears that the extension would be allowed,” said Milne. Following completion of these studies, “planning alternatives” will be developed and evaluated, and a preferred planning alternative determined, with input from stakeholders. Alternatives “may include extension of
Livingston Avenue”, improvements to other roadways, alternative modes of transportation, and “do nothing”, said Milne. Once the studies are completed, a Public Information Centre (PIC) will be planned for this fall at which time the results of the baseline studies, need and justification for improvements, and planning alternatives will be presented.

West Niagara Fair takes shape For an event which was in question as to whether it would even happen or not, the 2014 West Niagara Fair has planned homerun after homerun on its schedule this September. The event, which runs Sept. 4-7, boasts two demolition derbies (Thursday and Saturday night), Date Night on Friday, a packed midway and a host of core
agriculture programming. “The agriculture aspect is what it is all about,” said Stephen Capell, fair board president. “This fair is the only place you can go and see some of the things we have, whether it be the livestock shows or the demonstrations. Our goal is showcase where people’s food comes from.” At their booth last year

When you’re gone, I’m waiting for you to return so I can start living again.” And it wasn’t as well crafted as the first love letter kicked out by a computer: “My lust tempts your fond ardour. My liking ardently cares for your hunger.” It was simply a scrap of paper floating end-over-end down a narrow alleyway when I picked it up, probably dislodged from a car windshield or the back door of a house. Hand printed on a small, slender memo it was a story of tragedy, lust and revenge in a mere 15 words. “Brad, my cell phone not working. Come sleep over. Kids with their Dad tonight. Muffin.” A happy face appeared above Muffin’s

The only difference is Muffin is apparently sleeping with Brad, not her mother. “Come sleep over.” The line drips of Frank Sinatra’s erotic invitation to love. “Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away.” But it’s gotta be a real short flight because ... “Kids with their Dad tonight.” Okay so this is not the story of Ozzie & Harriet. It’s more like Stud & Muffin which would make an excellent name for a Stag & Doe party. Yet,

LOVE From Page 4 Muffin’s separation sounds rather amiable unless the kids are real hell raisers and the night at Dad’s is more like Night Of The Living Dead with the father preferring the company of zombies to his own offspring. For the movie, I’m thinking Brad Pitt as Brad, Jennifer Lawrence as Muffin and Phil and Sal Fondacaro, Hollywood’s most famous dwarf twins as the kids. Bill Murray would be Dad. The film opens with Brad, a grinning, beerswilling hunk watching an afternoon Jays game on TV while constantly looking at his cell phone for the booty call that will never come. Outside, a stranger picks up a note that has been separated from the windshield wiper blade by a slight breeze.
Upon further inspection, the audience learns that this is not just any stranger but one in desperate need of a column idea and is three hours from deadline. Meanwhile in a threebedroom clapboard in nearby Humberstone, Muffin rifles through her closet trying on a dozen teddies in order to select the perfect one for a tryst that will never take place, the invitation having gone with the wind. At the same time in an apartment above the City Hotel, Dad has locked himself in the bathroom where he alternates between stabbing pins into his Brad Pitt doll and speed-dialing Muffin who forgot to drop off the box of chocolates that are laced with Demerol to knock the little buggers out cold. But her cell phone is not working. And
he can’t drive to her apartment because the twins have jammed the fridge and stove against the bathroom door. As he screams for help, the children proceed to drop potted plants and small appliances on people walking below the living room window. Phil laughs hysterically as Sal opens his mouth to reveal the battery from their mother’s cell phone, this while they’re using skewers to spear fish in Dad’s aquarium. With the boys using his La-Z-Boy recliner as a trampoline and the cat imbedded in the living room ceiling, Dad jumps out the bathroom window into the dumpster below. He’s done this before when bad dates ended up staying the night. He drives his rusted-out beater to the house he still owns but can’t live in, fully expecting
to interrupt his exwife bench pressing a new boyfriend on the kitchen table but no, she’s alone and crying. She’s never been without her cell phone before. He fixes her cell phone, she fixes him dinner and together, they sing: “If you like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. If you’re not into yoga, if you have half a brain.” They take a selfie of themselves and while Muffin goes to get more chocolates, Dad sends the photo to Brad. For the lack of a cell phone, the note was written. For the loss of the note, the boyfriend was abandoned. For the unruliness of the children, the parents were reconciled. If you have been mulling over the idea of running for council or school board, you have just under a month to make up your mind. The last day to register to run for office is Friday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. for the Oct. 27 municipal election. That is also the deadline for any registered candidates to make any changes. “If they have decided to withdraw or to run for mayor instead of alderman, for example, that is the last date they can make the change,” said Hazel Soady-Easton, Town of Grimsby clerk. For the first time, Grimsby voters will be able to register their vote from their homes by telephone or computer. “It is completely secure, there is no way anyone will know who people vote for,” said SoadyEaston. For a demonstration on how to use electronic voting, go
to www.grimsby.ca/Mayor-NCouncil/Elections. The only polling station will be set up inside town hall where voters will have a full week to vote, Oct. 20-27. This will also be the only advance polling station. Voters will be able to indicate their choice on a paper ballot at the town but there will also be telephones and computers available. The week of Oct. 6, voter information letters will be mailed out to eligible voters. The letter will contain a security number unique to each voter. This number will be needed to vote as will your birth date as a secondary security measure. If you aren’t sure if you are on the voters’ list you can check Voterlookup.ca, a new online service from MPAC. Electors can confirm whether they are on the preliminary list of electors. Beamsville rower earns bronze medal at world competition When the team of James Myers of Beamsville and Grayson Gray of Thorold crossed the finish line at the U23 World Rowing Championship they had no idea they had earned a thirdplace finish – it was that close. The pair started the competition in Varese, Italy by winning their heat and advancing to the semi-finals set for July 26. Not too shabby for their first time as members of the U23 Canadian National Team. During the final, the Czech Republic crew had taken an early lead. Germany and Great Britain were battling for second and the Canadian crew was sitting back in fifth place. By the halfway mark, the Czechs were firmly in the lead and the Canadians had advanced and were now battling with Great Britain and Germany. Gray and Myers charged for the finish line crossing third just a half second behind Great Britain to take the bronze. “We were watching on the video screen and it was so close we couldn’t tell either,” said James’ father Brad, who accompanied him to Italy to cheer him on together with Gray’s mom, Debra Shiers.

For close to half a century, the Nelles Boulevard venue was the perfect location in which to showcase the work of the artisans that gathered for the Grimsby Festival of Art. Then around year 46, Mother Nature stopped cooperating. “Two years ago there was a bad storm in the morning and that meant a whole year’s work down the drain for 135 vendors,” said Drew Dulmage, art festival committee member and Grimsby Rotarian, the club that organizes the event. The next September, a second storm followed. “When people couldn’t come out it also meant no funds returned to the community charities the event supports,” explained Dulmage. “We are thankful to the people on Nelles Boulevard for all the years the event was held there.” Beneficiaries of the event are Community Living of Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln, Grimsby Rotary and also this year, Grimsby
Minor Hockey. So, the 48th annual Grimsby Festival of Art will be held at Blessed Trinity Secondary School right down the street. The school has a large parking lot and the Town of Grimsby has offered up space in its lot across the street for the two-day event: Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival is also partnering with 62nd Phantom Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Cadets will be helping out as well as providing overnight security for vendors. “We will have the same high calibre artists and artisans,” said Dulmage adding it remains a juried show. Musical entertainment will be provided and the Lincoln Leapers will be doing their very popular shows. There will also be tables and food trucks set up on the east side of the high school. The cost of admission has increased to $7 (those under 16 are admitted free) but there is a $2 off coupon at: grimsby-festival-arts.com.

Reader: a forest is a forest and a town is a town, don’t mix them Dear Editor, It is a beautiful sight to see trees of many kind and bushes and flowers that are used to beautify a property or a town in general, indeed some landscaping take your breath away, the same can be said about beautiful forests. But a forest belongs in a forest and not in the middle of a town and we do have billions of acres of forests throughout the country, Ontario alone has about 70% or more of the land mass with beautiful forests with hundreds of years old trees. A forest and the animals in it, can get sick at times and could affect the local residents as well. It’s also a good place for some bad intentioned people that could hide. This is why a town is a town and a forest a forest.
The region purchased the necessary land corridor anticipating the future expansion. You can see that Livingston comes to a “T” going west and we can all see that it’s not complete. There is also plans for a GO station and such just around the corner that will need some more room to facilitate people that travel and go to work in nearby cities. The town of Grimsby with the Livingston road blocked the way it is, It reminds me of a boy or girl that was told to stop growing at the age of 10 or 12 years old and yet none of us were told to stop growing at 10 or 12 years old. The same for the town of Grimsby, the expansion represents life and opportunity for new young ones, to call Grimsby Home.
The growth will be here whether we like it or not, so we cannot be selfish. Now the Livingston road corridor will cut through these trees where the sewers pipes are already there, but either side of the road where these trees are could be dedicated as a beautiful park so all in Grimsby can visit and enjoy the trees. In last week’s article, it was said that the sun and the salt will kill the trees, but if we take a ride along the existing Livingston road, well there is all kinds of houses and grass or lawns and trees and people and yet the salt while it does some damage to cars, all these lawns and trees are all green. As far as the sun, well as far as I know trees and plants need sun and water and soil,

Lawn bowl winners
A total of 14 lawn bowling teams from Grimsby, Burlington, Etobicoke, Hagersville, and Glenridge competed in the Open Triples Tournament held at the Grimsby Lawn Bowling Club last Tuesday, Aug. 5. Among the winners were: 2nd Three-Game High Winners: George Titus, skip; Stanley Pascoe, vice, and; Gillian Wood, lead, from Grimsby Lawn Bowling Club.
Hard work appreciated A tip o’ the cap to Stephen Capell and the rest of the West Niagara Fair board of directors for pulling the proverbial rabbit out of a hat in getting this year’s edition of the fair on track. As you will know if you read the front page story, the “new” fairgrounds at Mud Street and Mountain Road has been caught up in the planning process and is a solid 5-6 months behind as a result. Undaunted, the board pressed on and did what had to be done, which was work closely with the Township of West Lincoln and West Lincoln Minor Hockey to rewire previously set plans and free up the Smithville fairgrounds for the 2014 fair. Well done! Even when things go smoothly an event of this size takes a ton of volunteer work. The community is a better place for it. M.W.
Alternative needed to save woodlot I must admit, I am not a big tree-hugger type. Definite attention needs to be paid to all things environmental, but, generally, I would not be the first one in line to tour the Rainbow Warrior (Greenpeace’s well-known vessel) should it pull into Lakecourt Marine. That said, some things should just be done right or set right when circumstances allow. The matter at hand is the woodlot which is in the path of a proposed road extension off the end of Livingston Avenue in Grimsby. This is not a new issue, but a lot has changed in 20 years when the notion became a focus of Niagara Region. With a major parcel of land just waiting for a connection to one of the town’s major thoroughfares much seems logical to seeing the project materialize. The town, for all intents and purposes, has exhausted its supply of developable land thanks to Greenbelt legislation designed to do just that; greatly limit the environmental impact of sprawling development by capping where said development could occur. The key to this is not an anti-development stance. The vast majority of the lands this extension would connect to are developable and highly desirable with immediate connections to the QEW for likely commuters via Oakes Road or Casablanca. Build away people! But, there is no reason this parcel of land could not be developed as de-
MIKE WILLISCRAFT sired allowing for accesses from Main Street West which could allow the rare woodlot to remain pristine in the process. So nobody is saying, “don’t build”. What people are saying is, “Hey, this is a rare and unique feature and should be preserved.” The fact the Region had this in motion back in 1995 should be irrelevant to the conversation. Regional officials know the direction and focus of preserving key lands and, in Grimsby, there is no better example than this piece of land which has remained virtually unchanged – except for a couple of horse and wagon tracks – since its creation. What the region needs to do is take the same money, save themselves all the studies, remake Hwy. 8 into a decent roadway (with proper bike lanes) and create the entrance to the properties to be developed off there. Now this is simplifying considerably, of course, but I cannot believe that Niagara Region’s best engineering minds cannot come up with an alternative route so everyone can achieve
what they want where this process is concerned. In 1995 the steamroller effect was much more commonplace not just in Grimsby, but in Niagara and all of Ontario. Look at the difference in the rest of Livingston from 1995 to current....need I say more? From what could be achieved via alternative design, it is difficult to comprehend what would make this particular proposal a necessity. It certainly would have nothing to do with traffic patterns. With Hwy. 8 (Main Street West) just to the south and South Service Road just to the north to deal with local traffic, relieving traffic pressure is not in the equation. Even if a GO station were plopped right there at the southwest quadrant of Casablanca and the QEW, existing roads are already sufficient to handle the flow. In the end, I must say, I just don’t get it. ****** Some good letters this week, one on each side of the woodlot issue and another relating to last week’s column. Mr. Owen is quite correct, it is tough to keep things under wraps, but I have two choices: I can inform the community and let them make their own choices, or say nothing, and allow the massive discounting to exist in the shadows and have my competitor slowly bleed me dry. Not much of a choice there, but I would much rather write about real issues, not junk, any day of the week.

Everybody loves an underdog: reader Dear Editor, Nobody supports you more than me. You’re giving this town a firstclass newspaper and everyone I know really loves it. I could go on but that is not my point here. I read your comments last week. You have made them before. By now, everyone knows the style and tactics of your competitor either through your comments or having seen them first-hand. My neighbour has a business in town and has been the recipient of some of these low-ball pitches. As you said last week, you knew going in the other paper would do whatever they had to do to kill you off. It’s a
corporation. It’s what they do. On the other hand, they need to be called out and exposed for the way they conduct themselves. I want to know what is going on. Don’t get me wrong, it is not just your competitor here. Corporations are always out to grow market share and take over where possible. They have a financial master to serve and nothing stops that focus. It has to be tough to deal with this stuff day to day and not say anything, but the onus is not on you, my friend. The business people in the area need to pay attention beyond the bait that is being waggled in front of their
noses. It is the business community who need to realize, at least I hope they do, that the short-term saving of a buck today would have a long-reaching impact tomorrow. You’ve clearly proven you publish a superior local product. I know there will always be bargain shoppers who take cheap deals, but those deals won’t stay cheap if you’re not around and I do believe the business community realizes that. At least I hope they do! The community is rooting for you. Everyone loves an underdog and that, my friend, is you.

It would be hugely ironic if homes replaced the trees and then some kind of small park had to be put in so kids have a place to play – when their own backyards are too small. This 25-acre woodlot is a treasure to be retained for all time. The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority should take over stewardship of this land and manage it for all of
us. A bit of pruning and the creation of accessible trails would make this a true gem. When people can get in and see the land and trees, they will certainly appreciate its uniqueness. I am glad to see local residents banding together to save the woodlot. This is not NIMBYism or selfishness, it is plain common sense. Too much of Grimsby’s incredibly valuable fruit and food land has been sacrificed for shoddy subdivisions which only increase our tax burden and turn us
into a poorly-managed bedroom community for Toronto. We have a chance here to protect something that is literally irreplaceable. It could become a true asset to Grimsby, part of what makes us what we are; a destination place that people would come to see. This is something Grimsby lacks. We have almost totally ignored our public waterfront – let’s not ignore this woodlot. It must be protected. Ban the road, not the trees. Tim Fletcher Grimsby
