Arson suspected in multiple fires

NRP: similar pattern in at least 10 fires in three weeks

By Katherine Grant NewsNow It has been a crazy month, says West Lincoln Fire Chief Dennis Fisher. Fire call after fire call has had the local fire service out at all hours. There have now been about 10 suspicious fires in less than a month in West Lincoln and just over the border in Hamilton, said Fisher. On Sunday night the first call came in just after 11 p.m. “That was for a shed fire on South Chippawa Road which turned out to be minor,” said the chief. “The second call was just a few minutes later and a couple kilometres down the road.” This fire, a large barn also on South Chippawa Road, kept 28 firefighters out until about 7:45 a.m. the next day. Six trucks attended the scene and were supported by tankers from Haldimand and Hamilton. Niagara Regional Police Service is conducting a joint investigation with Hamilton Police Service and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office into these fires and several other barn that took place March 14 and 15. “The fires are certainly similar in nature. There are patterns and there is a concern about what is going on in these areas,” said Phil Gavin, NRP’s media relations officer. A media release from Hamilton Police Service says the fires are being treated as “related” and are asking the community to report any information they may have on a pick-up truck spotted in the area of some of the fires in March. Hamilton police are identifying the Hamilton and West Lincoln fires as “a crime spree of arsons”, according to the release.

Tax relief for Grimsby ratepayers By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The time to pay the piper has come and gone for Grimsby taxpayers. The result: a five per cent tax decrease this year.

At last week’s committee of the whole session, Finance Commitee Chair, Ald. Carolyn Mullins said a two per cent reduction on the Town portion may be possible with a lit-

tle juggling. When the dust settled, the reduction ballooned to 5.04 per cent. “When most other municipalities are looking at increases

Mayor Bob Bentley agreed. “I’ve been elected for over 21 years and I’ve seen some zero budget increases but don’t recall any that came close to this -5.04,” said Bentley. Ald. Steve Berry said the key to the reduction was completing payment of a 10-year $880,000 debenture to pay for the Peach King Centre, library and art gallery projects. “We were using the interest from the promissory note at hydro for half and half

from taxes. It was paid off after the 10 years and now we are returning the tax portion, half, to the citizens,” said Berry. “The decrease is due to the debenture being paid off. It was council and staff working together to meet the needs of the community. I am happy with the outcome.” Berry noted four major areas are seeing a combination of fulland part-time hires, including public works, planning, library and by-law enforcement. “We are still able to fund the sports park without going out for a debenture and will wait until firmer numbers come back for the fire facilities needs. We may need to look at some financing options,” Berry said, referring to the proposed new Station 2 fire

hall at the site of the former Calder School. This facility is to also include a state of the art training centre. Ald. Nick DiFlavio said another key is Council’s ability to absorb the cost of the new sports park without any debenture. “We have run a tight ship for years, and the benefits are clear,” said DiFlavio. “As the chair of the Planning Committee, I am particularly glad to see the West End Waterfront trail beginning this year. The project will take a few years, but in the end, will result in a waterfront trail that will be enjoyed by all the residents of Grimsby forever.” He also cited the refurbishing of the Town’s original library, the Carnegie Building as another feather for the community’s cap.

The Hamilton police noted these fires are occurring in the same geographical areas as two similar sprees in November and December of 2013. The fires under investigation include: Tapleytown Rd north of Mud April 5, at 09:45 a.m.; South Chippawa Rd. near Caister Centre Road April 5, 2015 at 11:05 p.m.; South Chippewa Rd near Caisterville Road 05/04/2015 at 11:16 p.m.; Trimble Rd in Hamilton near Hall Rd April 6, 2015 at

Bookprinters fair returns; Wayzgoose set for April 25 It isn’t really spring until Wayzgoose arrives in Grimsby. An annual gathering of printmakers and bookbinders, the 37th annual Wayzgoose, will take place Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 18 Carnegie Lane. Each year on the last Saturday in April, practitioners of a wide variety of book related arts, including letterpress printers, printmakers, papermakers, papermarblers, bookbinders, engravers calligraphers, head to the art gallery to present their work and share their expertise with the public and the next generation of artists and artisans. Many artisans will be doing demonstrations and there will be items for sale. The Grimsby Wayzgoose started in 1979 as a small gathering of friends and colleagues. Ge disputes NPE official’s contention utility’s rep knocked on his door, twice In a radio interview with Newstalk 1010’s Jerry Agar last Thursday, Niagara Peninsula Energy’s Margaret Battista, vice-president customer service, claimed their representative knocked on the door of G & L Nursery operator Rex Ge on two different occasions before his power was disconnected. Ge says no way. Ge’s power was cut off in late February over an overdue amount of just over $360. The action lead to the contents of this greenhouse operation being destroyed, including all plants as well as his heating and watering system. Damage has been estimated at more than $150,000. While Battista said all Ge had to do was let the company know he would be overseas – he was in China for six weeks attending to ill parents – and no action would have been taken. She said NPE followed its procedures. In NewsNow’s initial story pub-

lished March 12, Battista did not make the claim of visits to the door. She did say their representative does complete a report each time they attend a location and that was done in this case. She did not elaborate on what the report said. Regardless, Ge said when he first returned home from China there was nearly four feet of snow in his lane and on his porch. There was no sign anything had been disturbed – no footprints. He was only home a brief time, then took ill himself and he went to Toronto to be cared for by his son. When he returned home a second time about a week later, more snow, no new footprints. He said both disconnection notices were placed in his rural mailbox and he never saw them. “If they had only knocked on my door before it was cut off,” Ge said. Ge believes NPE should pay restitution in his case as he be-

lieves proper protocols were not followed. He also said his account was not even to 60 days overdue for the small amount and he had a perfect payment record to that point. The community has come to his aid through the “Rally For Rex” campaign, with just over $3,000 coming in so far. “There is a long way to go,” said Ge’s friend, Laura Fevez. Aside from the fact he does not have the money, he thinks NPE should do the honourable thing, admit there were errors and work with him to allow him to rebuild his life. HHS starts one-year care review A review regarding the future of health care expected to take a full year was the topic of conversation for Hamilton Health Sciences president and CEO Rob MacIsaac and his team at Lincoln Council Tuesday night. MacIsaac told council there were three key areas which will be part of the focus: continued integration of HHS with West Lincoln

Memorial Hospital; the Our Healthy Future series of input sessions, and; community engagement portion. Aaron Levo, vice-president, communications and public affairs, who was also on hand said the goal of the project, requested by the Ministry of Health last year, is attain a plan to manage the chaning face of health care.

“People are living longer and need more and more complex care. Technology is changing to allow us to keep up, but at a price,” said Levo. He added that the project will provide a roadmap for 10-20 years of care at HHS facilities, which includes WLMH. “It is a long-term commitment,” he said.

Shovels are in the ground for new WNAS Fairgrounds It was a long time coming, but it is full steam ahead now. “Everyone has been waiting for this day,” said a smiling Albert Witteveen, president of the West Niagara Agricultural Society. This is a such good fit for the area,” said Verhelst on Saturday.The building will be known as Richardson Agricultural Hall. “Being the recipient of such a generous donation from Richardson International gives us the knowledge and inspiration to grow agriculture in Niagara knowing we do not stand alone,” said Witteveen. The project is the culmination of years of planning after the amalgamation of the Lincoln Agricultural Society and Smithville Agricultural Society to form the West Niagara Agricultural Society in 2012. While work officially began on the property in late January 2014, it was stalled by redtape and approvals which have now been rectified to allow construction to begin.

Yoga for the grieving heart Everyone grieves differently. How to encourage children to be active Children and adolescents should engage in physical activity for 60 minutes or more each day. While fulfilling those requirements might not have been a problem for kids who grew up before the dawn of the Internet, nowadays kids are spending less time playing outside and more time on their computers or other devices. Parents hoping to instill a love of physical activity in their youngsters may find that taking a more active role by exercising with their kids is an effective way to get them off the couch and away from their computer screens. •Turn errands into exercise opportunities. When such errands don’t necessarily require the use of a car, consider riding bicycles instead. Kids who otherwise don’t enjoy errands may now find them fun. •Include kids in your own athletic

pursuits. Parents might not be able to take younger kids along with them to the gym, but that does not mean your youngsters must be excluded from all of your athletic pursuits. If you have any upcoming athletic activities or challenges on your schedule, such as a new recreational sports season or community fun run or 5K, let kids tag along as you train or practice. Parents

of adolescents can inquire at their local gyms if they offer discounted memberships to teens. •Make more time to play. Kids might be reluctant to shoot hoops in the driveway if no one is willing to join them, but they will likely be far more willing to do so if mom and dad are willing to play with them. Residents without heat, hot water as services cut The heat has been turned off, there is no hot water and a notice posted on the door at the Escarpment Inn and Residences indicates the power is also about to be turned off due to an outstanding bill of $3,400. Things are grim for the residents still living at 575 Main St., West in Grimsby, a former motel, and they have yet to have their day in court. A security guard is still on round-theclock fire watch due to a lack of fire alarms. “Space heaters have been distributed,” said Lisa Ridsdill, a paralegal from Niagara North Community Legal Assistance. Residents have continued to pay their rent which includes their utilities and cable, although their cable has been off for over a month now. There are court hearings set for April 23 and April 30 in part to determine whether or not the building and tenants fall under the jurisdiction of the Residential Tenancies Act or the Innkeepers Act. Ridsdill will be representing the tenants. She also is in the process of filing a lawsuit against landowner Olu Akinbolue for punitive damages and mental distress. “I am also asking for a fine to be paid

It was built at Port Glasgow, Scotland, for the British & Burmese Steam Navigation Co. and completed in January as Kadeik. Early in 1952, British & Burmese were acquired by the Elder Dempster Line, another British flag concern known for service to Africa. The ship remained part of the now subsidiary B. & B. fleet until it came under the main Elder Dempster banner in 1964. Kadeik operated on their behalf until sold to Vronca Cia Nav. S.A. of Liberia in 1966. Renamed Kyra Katina, the vessel came to the Great Lakes in 1967. Kyra Katina was sold in 1974 and registered in Panama as An Ming. After 25 years of service, An Ming was abandoned by the crew at the anchorage off Lagos, Nigeria, on Dec. 28, 1977. This is often a sign that living conditions on board were not good, that there were no contracts and perhaps the sailors hadn’t been paid. After riding at anchor for about 19 months, and after having been looted, a leak developed in the engine room. On July 24, 1979, An Ming sank as a total loss about 3.5 nautical miles southwest of Lagos.

Help needed to get Torie back on her feet A Grimsby woman needs help from the community to get back on her feet after a life-altering accident. Just last month, March 8, Torie Taylor was involved in an accident while

snowmobiling. The acident left her with multiple breaks in her leg. Due to complications, her lower limb

Draw a raptor, win a prize Raptorfest Art Contest deadline now April 14 It is time for the 19th annual Raptor Art Contest and children are encouraged to get to work on a rendering of their favourite bird of prey. The contest is open for all students from Grades 1-8, plus Kindergarten. Entries have to be dropped off at Special Effects at Village Inn Plaza in Grimsby and the deadline has been extended to Tuesday, April 14. Local artist Rick Manners will be judging again this year. Winners will be notified and ribbons will be awarded at Raptorfest on April 25. A special presentation will be held at noon, followed by the annual Earthday cake, courtesy of the Cake Queens. Raptorfest will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peach King Centre, 162 Livingston Ave. Admission is free. There will be live birds of prey, reptiles and animals and nature displays. Children are also encouraged to bring their cameras to Raptorfest to take “Animal Selfies” with a variety of different animals that will be visiting this year. NPE’s story has too many holes While NewsNow does not have a legal department, we will plead the case of Rex Ge any day. Readers will know Rex is the West Lincoln man who had his business devastated due to an itchy trigger finger on the part of Niagara Peninsula Energy’s disconnection process. The latest development, Margaret Battista, NPE’s vicepresident customer service, was heard in a radio interview last week claim their representative knocked on the door of Rex’s Hwy. 20 home on two different occasions. This despite both of the two important disconnection notices only getting so far as his rural mailbox at the road, not visibly posted on his door. Odd, no? Rex was in China when the first notice came. He returned to a snow-covered, pristine lane, staircase and porch. No footprints or markings. He was home briefly, then to Toronto. When he returned again in a week. No footprints again: second notice in mailbox. NPE needs to step up to its responsibility here. M.W.

Professor Ambarish Chandra of the Rotman School of Management said – in a rabble.ca piece regarding the sale of Sun Media papers – varied opinion, one of the keys to Postmedia being allowed to swallow Sun Media whole by the federal competition bureau, is available online. The point of critics in the story cite, “...that local news and opinion is only a Google search away is pure fantasy. You can’t search what doesn’t exist. The responsibility for the vast majority of daily news coverage in cities and towns in this country falls to the local newspaper. And no one else.” That is one major point I try to explain to those, and there have been many “media watchers” who have asked me for my two cents on what has been happening with the larger scale media landscape. Even with the “local newspaper” news simply is not there anymore. All the corporates started cutting bone, not fat, years ago in an effort to maximize profits. My former employers newsgathering team is about half of when Torstar rolled into town in 2004 Do the math. There is no physical way their staff can get to all the stories but, then again, they don’t need to either. Instead of getting into traditional stories, corporate papers have followed the buck. Do you notice all those $175 cheque photos, sometimes with full stories? Yes, fundraising is important, and every dime crucial, but it is not a newspaper beat. Fact is, it is low-hanging fruit, quick and easy copy. Readers see a lot more of that to fill space instead of

This is compounded by 90-10 per cent ad-editorial ratio papers we see on a regular basis... far surpassing the industry standard. But all that is a debate for another day...to keep the eye on the ball here, what most people ask is, “what is going to happen here?”...with Niagara’s papers. Bottom line, I have no clue. I stopped trying to figure out my competitor when I still worked there. My cohorts and I used to have discussions on what we thought our overall business strategy should be...when a decision came, it was almost always the opposite of what our consensus was. It was uncanny. While the merger of two media giants was announced months ago, I have put off commenting at all so I could gather some intel. Being a past president of the national newspaper association’s main advantage is contacts coast to coast, so, with time, I can track whatever I need. Simply, everyone is ex-

pecting another major shoe to drop: meaning another media property shuffle. With battle fronts in London, Barrie, Peterborough, Ottawa and Niagara virtually all expect to see a division take place to settle these contested areas. The sentiment, if the competition bureau did not care about dailies in major markets being held by one entity, why would they hold up secondary markets? I can’t argue with that. Lord knows, something has to give in our market. When I heard in recent weeks some of the evenmore-ridiculous ad packages being offered by my friends across the street I figured something was up. Times sure have changed since Torstar’s paper was quoting $300-plus for a black-and-white 1/4 page in April 2012. My point is, if they are that desperate to take me out of this area, how desperate must they be in other areas? What is strange locally is I never attempted to compete with their rate reductions last year, but they felt the need to reduce them further and throw in a bunch of other window dressing because I am still here....a fact for which I am very thankful to my loyal advertisers who recognize quality and return on investment are more important than just plain cheap. So, to summarize these mindless ramblings, Postmedia won’t take over Sun papers formally until next week. I think something breaks before summer. Which way, nobody has a clue. For me, it is interesting, but something about which I cannot worry. It is far, far, far beyond my control.

Jordan OMB case cost town $174K Town of Grimsby has posted the second legal opinion regarding the Jordan Greenhouses Ontario Municipal Board decision. Last week, Mayor Bob Bentley said the opinion letter would be posted and a press release issued by the town “...as our side has not been told and needs to be for the record...”. This week, Bentley said, “We talked about how to move

forward and I believe the verbiage we have on our webpage is sufficient.” The Town’s legal cost for the matter, which resulted in an award of $115,000 to Jordans, totalled nearly $174,000

from 2010 to current, said Keith Vogl, town manager. This includes an HST rebate. “We will be responsible to pay the R. Jordan Greenhouses costs, which we have not seen yet,” he added.
