DeSantis condo to be redesigned at 4 storeys By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Gabe DeSantis said he was listening to the citizens of Grimsby and now he is set to deliver on that declaration by delivering a downtown condo design with Official Plan guidelines. During an open house on DeSantis’s proposed eightstorey Century Condos project planned for the old
Roxy Theatre site on Main Street East, many members of the public and all members of the Town’s Planning Committee noted their opposition to the initial design. The message delivered to DeSantis and his team was consistent with that voiced repeatedly at an open house he hosted himself earlier in the month at the Carnegie Building: basically, stick to
the Official Plan (four storeys) and maintain a heritage look in keeping with the core’s atmosphere. “We got the message loud and clear,” said lead consultant on the project, John Ariens. “It was much the same as the open house the developer had, but every member of the Planning Committee was clear and unified
that a different direction was needed. The redesign will not cause the project to lose a great number of proposed units as more ground will be utilized. Ariens explained that the initial design had gone to great lengths to accommodate a nine-foot wide town-owned lane which connects Ontario Street to the land being de-
veloped. Ariens said the initial eight-storey design was developed using direction provided by Niagara Region and Grimsby’s planning department during a pre-consult meeting in July 2017. “The pedestal base and clock tower, that is straight from the Region, and Grimsby’s planners said they See CONDO, Page 3

News Now • Thursday, April 5, 2018 • Page 3 another developer he claimed had been “sent away and told to go higher.” With planning’s apparent withdrawal of support for the eight-story design for DeSantis’s plan amid a public firestorm, Ariens said a new direction for a widened design – not worrying about the narrow alley – was discussed during a two-hour meeting last Thursday, March 29. “Density was never an issue and this will blend better,” said Ariens, noting the new design will still come in with about 80-90 units. The initial proposal had 86 units. “You really want as much density downtown as possible,” said Ariens, noting the Town’s Official Plan is “suspiciously silent on density”. “It is not the size of the Kleenex box. It is the number of tissues inside.” With four storeys now the plan, a heritage look
and feel is a major focal point for the design team, said Ariens. That was one of many points repeatedly driven home during the March 27 open house. OPEN HOUSE That 7 p.m. meeting got off to a rocky start with doors being locked on townhall about 6:45 p.m. due to the room being at maximum fire capacity of 195. To start the proceedings and again at Monday night’s regular council meeting, DiFlavio apologized to those who could not get in. While last week he said a special open house would be held to allow those who could not get in an opportunity to comment, he updated that Monday saying the meeting would not be needed since the plan was being rejigged. However, a full open house meeting will be planned to allow the
public to comment on the brand new design when it is ready. While DiFlavio said Monday, “I received notification the night before that we had concerns about the attendance”, staff were worried about attendance a week earlier at the twin tower meeting. CAO Derik Brandt had recommended to planning officials that a move to the Peach King Centre may be needed. However, being an official public meeting and having advertised the town hall address, a move anywhere could have proven an issue, he was told. Despite the design changes to conform to the Official Plan, many of the comments made at the March 27 open house dealt with traffic and service saturation in the core, particularly on Doran Avenue, which will be the only in/out for the site.

NRB helps GAMRU sail ahead The campaign to replace the aging inflatable rescue boat patrolling the south shore of Lake Ontario took a big step ahead recently with a substantial donation NRB. NRB has committed $10,000 to the campaign to replace the fast-response vessel manned by volunteers from GAMRU South Shore Search And Rescue, the two organizations announced this week. The donation boosts the campaign’s total to more than $80,000 in funds on-hand or committed. The goal of the campaign is $300,000 Plazek 2 x 20 PU

Major university hearing study seeks participants. Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge. Qualifying participants may also receive a demonstration of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve lifechanging hearing healthcare across Canada.
Why participate in the hearing study?
Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the
need to better understand how hearing loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully.
It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

Rozender, Michael
Born May 11, 1944 at Toronto - died March 30, 2018 at Grimsby. Michael died at home, as he wished, on Friday, March 30th. He leaves his wife Joanna, children Nancy (JeanJacques), Marc (Mira), Morgan (Laura) and Alexandra. Grandchildren Marina, Tristan, Loic and Ari as well as his sister Bev (Bob). Michael was born in Toronto to parents who had fled Poland to escape the Nazis. His early schooling was at Forrest Hill Collegiate and he later received an engineering degree from the University of Waterloo. His first job as a NASA certified engineer was at Spar Aerospace in Montreal. Michael went on to work in executive personnel placement and consulting and during his retirement became a maker of gravlax which was sold by Vik’s Meats, on the menu at August Restaurant and greatly enjoyed by his family. In accordance with his wishes there will be no service, instead a reception to honour Michael’s memory will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at 439 Murray Street, Grimsby. On a beautiful Easter morning, when heaven was rejoicing the risen Christ, a beloved soul was called to join the celebrations with our Lord. Dr. Michael King passed away on Easter Sunday, April 1st, 2018, in his 82nd year. Loving and devoted husband of Patricia King (née Fisher) for 55 years. Loving father of Scott King (Kathy) of Port Coquitlam, BC and Jennifer Horton (Darren) of Vineland, Ontario. Cherished grandfather of Isabella King and Sarah, Michael and Jessica Horton. Brother of Peter King (Terry), David King (deceased 2006), Raina King and Patricia King Moffatt (George). Son of the late Dr. Ralph and Frances King. Michael will be missed by many family members and friends. Michael was born in St. Michael, Barbados, and came to Canada in 1954 to attend McGill University to study medicine. He graduated in 1960 and did his internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, where he met the love of his life. Michael began his practice in 1962 as a family physician. He provided comprehensive and compassionate care to all his patients and visited them in their homes until the day he retired. Michael also served as Chief of Staff at Marian Villa and St. Mary’s Hospital for several years. In their retirement, Michael and Patricia spent many years returning to their beloved island in the sun where they enjoyed the company of many cherished friends. Special thanks to Dr. Dale Wilson, Dr. Daniel Kreuzer, Dr. Marco Mura, Dr. Kirk Hamilton, and members of the EDITH team. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marion Eborall (nee Parker, 1925-2018). She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2004. She is survived by her three daughters - Sandy, Pat and Judy; two sons-in-law - Bill and Tom; four grandchildren - Bill, Shannon, Mandy and Tom; their partners- Jennifer, Todd and Sarah and eleven great-grandchildren - Andrew, Laura, Brian, Dakota, Parker, Ravynn, Brandon, Zoe, Morgan, Kai and Kingston. Marion spent most of her life living in Beamsville as did three generations of her family before her. She loved her hometown. Even though she moved away for a few years she could not wait to come back. She attended Jacob Beam Public School and Beamsville High School, then trained as a hairdresser. She was an accomplished craftsperson, creating beautiful ceramics, porcelain lace dolls, knitted afghans, quilts and creative scarves. She loved beautiful surroundings and one of her favourite hobbies was to decorate a home, move and do it again. Marion was a true matriarch, holding family together, making us a tight knit unit, enjoying holidays together. Christmas and birthdays held a special meaning for Marion and her calendar was marked with everyone’s special day and she was sure never to skip an acknowledgement of that day. Marion was not always the easiest mother in the world. She could be bossy; she always spoke her mind; diplomacy was not her forte. She loved to observe and interact with the people around her. We will remember her with love as we always knew how much she loved us. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Fireside Room at Tallman’s in Vineland on Sunday, April 8 from 2 – 4 p.m. If desired, donations to C.N.I.B would be appreciated by the family. Weatherdon, who was the subject of a feature in the Nov/Dec edition of ClubWest Magazine. Weatherdon attends Neglia six days a week to train and has been dancing since age three. She was lead Marie in Neglia Ballet’s Nutcracker in 2017. She recently competed at the Youth America Grand Prix in both Pittsburgh and Toronto. She received top scores and a First Place win in Senior Women’s Contemporary Ballet.

Not always, and especially where planning is concerned, but it appears – to some degree – many will get what they want where Century Condos is concerned as developer Homes By DeSantis has agreed to revamp the project and come back within Official Plan standards... meaning four storeys, in this case. For the vast majority of those who were vehemently opposed to the eight-storey version of the project due to landscape impact, lack of meshing with the downtown heritage character and other factors, much of those worries will be mitigated. Traffic on Ontario and Doran issues will persist as the number of units is expected to remain in the 80-90 range. To his credit, Gabe DeSantis took a verbal beating for hours and didn’t blink. He maintained he was listening, and, in fact, he was. For that he deserves credit. The four-storey version will have a major impact on the core and it is hoped the traffic/parking issues can be ironed out. M.W.
Frying pan to fire with open houses Grimsby lost perhaps the best watchdog this community has known this week in Michael Rozender. He first came purposefully walking into my office well over two years on a fact-finding mission. “What’s with this biodigester business?” he asked. What transpired over the next two years was one lesson after another on how to source information, deal with high level goverment officials, comb through budgets and trouble shoot the tidbits of information which trickle forth from Grimsby’s electricity holding. Between Chatsworth Bluffs and SusGlobal, Michael managed to root out great detail and contacts. His background as an engineer with a history in energy generation – combined with a tenacity unlike most one-third his age – Michael was able to ask highly educated questions of the right people and get important, accurate information. For me, he was like a full-time investigative reporter the likes of which are no longer employed at weekly papers. We could sit around for 15-20 minutes, trade stories about anecdotes we had heard in recent weeks, part, confirm or disprove these things and develop an understanding of what was really going on at the Sobie Road site. After the Mayor’s Breakfast in November of 2015 when then Niagara Power chair James Detenbeck outlined projected costs and revenues for the proposed biodigester, Michael came in to tell me
MIKE WILLISCRAFT their numbers were horribly wrong. While it was at that meeting when the capital cost to build the white elephant was mentioned for the first time to have escalated from the initial $3.5 million to $4.5 million, even Michael did not foresee the tab skyrocketing to the $11 million ballpark. His assessment was solely based on projected operating costs and net results. He told me many ways in which their cost estimates were off-base starting with input material. Then there was manpower, overestimated performance of the system and a host of other things. Of course there have been ongoing issues with getting input material. The powers that be never accounted for having to pay a German firm to monitor the site 24/7 in an attempt to keep the system running anywhere near efficiently and they also didn’t plan for needing to seek liquid slurries for input material. This last one is a premixed conconction of digestible material which can be pushed through the singular feeder stock system used by the bio. Liquid can
move more quickly than the solids and, since the unit is supposed to have two feeder stock systems to run anywhere close the 97 per cent capacity it was projected at, let’s just say they are not close to the levels of those initial revenue projections in 2015. The mere fact that I can rattle off all that blob of information is 100 per cent Michael Rozender. Taxpayers and readers have to thank and/or be upset at him for that. It just depends if you care about how your municipality’s tax dollars are spent. And I say tax dollars, despite Grimsby Energy being a “private” company, because town council is the shareholder of this entity. While taxpayers cannot vote out the hydro board, they certainly have their say when it comes to council how largely sat back and watched a most remarkable, if not financilly tragic, story unfurl. Michael’s initial estimate was the bio would lose $600,000-$800,000 per year as soon as it was turned on. I have seen nothing to indicate otherwise, particularly the stories about it freezing up in the winter or the system being overpacked and batches of material being ruined. I have a great deal of respect for the man Michael Rozender was. His input, his knowledge, his burning passion to see the “right thing” done and his wit will all be sorely missed. I will leave you with his last email to me, dated Jan. 1, 2018 7:47 p.m.: Best wishes for a healthy & Happy New Year! The year of Regime Change!
