Up Front Byelection for WL seat

West Lincoln council has opted to have a byelection to fill the seat at its table vacated when Ward 3’s Alex Micallef resigned in March. The decision was made at Monday’s council meeting. Council had an option to appoint a replacement. No date has been set for the byelection.

a detailed overview of how their municipality developed and implemented a comprehensive transit program. “Local transit will never make money,” said Muhkerjee, but he emphasized there is great difficulty in putting a pricetag on filling

the essential need of mobility to see family, shop and access work or medical appointments to certain vulnerable sectors of society such as the elderly or youth. About 55 people were attended a transit symposium meeting last Thurs-

day at Grimsby’s town hall. Michael Seaman, Grimsby’s director of planning, said the presentation was exactly as billed, a comprehensive look at all that would be needed to implement a transit system. “It was an out-

WL council approves $42K benefit package for itself The Township of West Lincoln council voted at its Monday meeting to give itself a benefit package which could cost taxpayers as much as $42,000. With the mayor of West Lincoln receiving just under $30,000 annually and councillors’ remuneration at just over $17,600, the new benefit package works out to 20 per cent and 34 per cent increase in compensation. In a recorded vote only Coun. Dave Bylsma opposed the benefit package, while Mayor Doug Joyner and Councillors Jason Trombetta, Mike Rehner, Terry Bell, Joann Chechalk voted to approve. Bylsma said the timing was all wrong for council to be considering such a measure. “I don’t believe these types of increases or changes should be done mid-term,” said Bylsma, adding only four of 11 Niagara member municipalities having

such a benefit for elected officials. “Rather, they should be implemented after the next term, That way, we as council don’t benefit until the public has their say.” Comments were made around the table, said Bylsma, which noted “there was little concern” from the public, since only one member of the public was in attendance at the council meeting. “I think any increase larger than the cost of living should be implemented in the next term,” said Bylsma. He acknowledged that the timing is unfortunate with the municipality having recently accepted a large sum of money for compensation for wind farm construction, but he does not believe the two are connected. “The time we spent on the wind (farm) stuff did push it back, but I can honestly say that was not anyone’s intention,” he said.

Jr. Citizen off to Paraguay When Cara Lozano’s family found its way to Grimsby after moving from South Africa, she realized right away what she had in her new hometown. “I love Grimsby. It is a huge part of my life and I would not be who I am today without the town,” said Lozano, the recipient of Grimby Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Citizen of the Year Award. “I was in disbelief when I heard I won. I am sure there were a lot of really good nominations, to be considered is an honour. Lozano will re-

This August she will travel to Paraguay as part of Rotary International’s exchange program. “I am not sure of the exact location as yet, but I am very excited about that,” she said. For post-secondary studies, she plans to go into landscape architecture. “I want to build beautiful things

and I want to work with people,” said Lozano. “With volunteering, I recognize I am part of the community and there is a resonsiblity there. You owe something to your community and I want to give back.” “A lot of people do. I’d like to thank all the volunteers and organizations out there working hard. I am not the only one. Alan Goddard: A champion of Grimsby A quick look at the resume of Alan Goddard reveals one thing: he has been a busy man. He also happens to be the recipient of Grimsby Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Citizen of the Year Award. The born and raised Grimsbonian has had a highly successful business career with long stints at Dofasco and Canadian Tire dealing with public and corporate affairs as well as communications. He resided in Toronto for a time, but never forgot his roots. “I grew up on our family’s farm which

ALAN GODDARD was where Centennial Park and Nelles School are now,” said Goddard. “Yes, I do miss the old Grimsby, but no looking back. We have a lot of exciting things going on in this town. I would never leave it.” The list of Goddard’s volunteer investment is far too long to list but

his experience has spanned everything from West Lincoln Memorial Hospital to McNally House and Niagara College’s board of directors....and about two dozen other organizations. Despite his lengthy credentials, Goddard never expected such an honour as being named citizen of the year. “I was in a state of shock when Marshall (Deeth) called me,” recalled Goddard. “There are so many people in the community doing great things, I am truly honoured.” He said he remembered seeing peo-

ple in the community named citizens of the year in the past, “but I never thought it would be me.” “I’ve been lucky. I could not have asked for a better place to grow up. Everybody knew everybody. Your teachers at school were your neighbours. It was just a great place to be... still is.” Goddard graduated from Park School and Grimsby High School, meeting his wife Margaret in Grade 10. The couple have two children, Lisa and Adam, and three grandkids: Madeleine, Oliver and Maxwell.

Denny Pyatt: synonomous with Kinsmen By Mike Williscraft NewsNow In a day when service clubs struggle to maintain members and volunteer organizations are constanly seeking people who can give an hour or two of their time each week, it is hard to believe someone givng 50 years of service. If you are among those people, you have not met Denny Pyatt. For five decades, Denny has not just been a member of the Grimsby Kinsmen Club, but he has served on its executive each and every year. What started as a token factfinding mission turned out to be a large part of his life’s work. “We used to have a Zellers where the Giant Tiger is now. The manager there was the manager then. I was in one day

to pick up my wife, Shirley, who worked there and he was telling us about Beamsville having a Kinsmen Club,” recalled Denny. “I always believed you don’t say no to things you don’t know about so we went to an information night. We didn’t learn much, but the second night we had 16 or 17 guys there. Although we needed 21 members to get a charter, it was suggested we go ahead and for an executive and get started.” With Dave Sebben agreeing to step into the duel role of treasurer-president, Denny also took an executive position to get the ball rolling. For someone like Denny, who sees getting involved in the community as vital need, not a passing interest, it is difficult for him to understand why more people aren’t getting involved. “I know times have changes and people are very busy these days, but people need to get involved, not just with the Kinsmen but any of the other clubs,” said Denny. “They are all doing good things and they need help to make them happen. Kinsmen-run events have become community staples By Mike Williscraft NewsNow If you’ve either hunter or brought the hunters to the annual Easter egg hunt, sipped a hot chocolate at the start of the Grimsby Santa Claus Parade, or putted your way through the downtown core while snow flies outside, you likely have the Kinsmen Club of Grimsby to thank. Much of those events have gone off seamlessly, but the winter of 1974’s Santa Claus Parade was in a different category. The Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce had run the parade for many years but when that year’s chair quit in mid-October, the Kinsmen stepped in to save the day. “We got involved just six weeks before the day and the only thing booked was the Burlington Teen Tour Band,” said long time Kin Bruce Bond. The Kinsmen organized the parade for 16 years with Denny Pyatt, five year, Karen Sisson,

The time our hot chocolate truck broke down and Steve Witt save our bacon by getting a vehicle down here for us from Smithville.” While there have been a lot of great times and great people along the way, there has also been some disappointments. In 1976, there was a big push for Canadians to get fit. That seemed like a great way of thinking to the club and they got heavily involved in the development of a Participark project. The concept of this program was to build fitness stations throughout Centennial Park, a chin-up apparatus was one example, and then have a path to another exercise spot. It featured 12 activity stations. “That was a huge deal at the time. We had the federal minister of fitness here for the official opening. It got a lot of media attention for the community,” said Bruce. “The Town was supposed to put in walkways between the stations, but that never happened. It got hit with a lot of vandalism and we did not get any support from the council of the day to keep it up. We were told it had to be repaired or removed, so it was removed.” While the club did not get much support from town council at times, the same was never true for long-time recreation services director Jim Wright. “Jim was a great man in this town. He always had time for you, made you feel like what you had to say was important,” said Denny. “We would have a discussion, come up with ideas, and the club

would execute them. He was a big supporter.” And the club to a lot of support with their monthly bingo night held at the now-gone Place Polonaise. “Bingo actually started in the old Peach King Arena, then to Seniors Centre, then to Place Polonaise,” said Denny. “We had a $10,000 bingo, the biggest in Niagara on the first Friday of each month. It was huge, too big, in fact. We got a letter from the commissioner saying we were making too much money in one club, so we had to split up the nights.” The Kinettes would do one month, they Grimsby Rotary, but Kin Doug Dawson always called the numbers. “Every dime of that money went into the community and the government seemed to forget that when they stuck their nose into it. When the provincial government started the lotteries they didn’t like how much money we had so they started putting more and more controls in. Soon enough, it was dead,” recalled Bruce. efitted greatly over the years is the Cyctic Fibrosis Canada. Bruce noted Kinsmen Clubs across Canada have gone over the $50 million mark in contributions to the organization. With all the high and lows, great events and not-so-great events, active membership and sparse membership, what keeps the dedicated crew of the Grimsby Kinsmen Club plugging along? “It is the feeling that you are doing something good for your community,” said Bruce. “Our goal is to serve our community’s greatest needs, whether that be supporting WLMH or kids who need equipment or registration fees, which is how we got the mini putt started in the first place.” “Money is not the only payment a person can receive for their efforts.” And every bit of the club’s exploits have been meticulously kept in a scrapbook archive which has earned countless commendations from the organization’s higher ups. The club has won top honours at the zone level every year, at District many times and four times at the national level. “The scrapbooks are our entire history, not just a meeting log,” said Denny.

CCWN joins battle to combat meal gap In its second year, the #EveryPlateFull campaign, is once again urging Canadians to address the 26,548,725 summer meal gap that is facing Canadians struggling with hunger. Community Care of West Niagara is joining in to raise support for those facing hardship. During the month of May, over 120 food bank organizations are raising much needed food and funds to ensure shelves are full during the summer months. Fund and food donations are generally at their lowest from June to August, when kids are having a summer break from school. During this heavy vacation period, CCWN strives to maintain consistent service and variety at a time of year when many are busy making summer plans. ”The summer is a particularly difficult time for families living with food insecu-

Smithville United Church celebrates 225 years of spiritual growth The year was 1791 and Rev. Darius Dunham, sometimes called “the sweet singer of psalms” and “scolding Dunham”, received a commission to “roam at large” in the Niagara Peninsula. He packed his saddlebags, mounted his horse and eventually set out across the Great Swamp (as the area around Fly Road is now called) through the forest to the Griffin Settlement along the Twenty-Mile Creek. A Settlement we now call Smithville. Today, in the year 2016, Smithville United Church is celebrating the ministry started two-hundred-twentyfive years ago. And of

course, we are inviting the community to join our celebrations. The anniversary committee has planned a number of events starting with the Sunday morning service on May 1, 2016 with a very special guest from the distant past, Rev. John Wesley. Played in full period costume, by Rev. John F. Bedell, John Wesley, together with his brother Charles and other members of “The Holy Club”, was responsible for the founding of Methodism. Saturday May 14, 2 p.m., Smithville United Church welcomes the Westfield Period Cos-

tume Fashion Show. Since then it has grown into an eagerly awaited annual event with 45-50 artisans exhibiting their creations for the more than 2,000 visitors who regularly attend the event. Participants and visitors come from across Ontario, Quebec and

the North Eastern states. There are also often a few travelers from Europe, Japan and across the U.S. who find their way to Grimsby to enjoy and appreciate this fascinating craft. “We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones on Saturday, April 30th,” said GPAG curator Rhona Wenger. The event runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Ferster, Shirley (Shirl) Ann

Passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2016, aged 52 years. Born and raised in Hamilton, Shirl is survived by her spouse David Haskins, her father William Ferster, brothers Robert and Ronald Ferster, sister Susan (Fred) Ferster-Brown, and predeceased by her mother Dorothy Ferster. In her youth Shirl both worked and volunteered at Hamilton East Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club, coaching T-ball teams and life-guarding. She amassed bowling, darts, and ball trophies from slow-pitch and fastball in mixed and women’s leagues. After a stint at Toys R Us, at 32 she graduated from Mohawk College as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. She applied her dogged attention to detail to her work in medical billing for a physiotherapy chain. To the end, Shirl maintained a youthful optimism and a selfless caring for those she loved. Cremation has taken place. The family welcomes friends to Shirley’s home in Grimsby on Saturday, April 30, 2 pm to 5 pm. to share their memories and stories. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.

How to feed a dead horse?..Interesting An interested reader emailed me this earlier in the week, author unknown, but glad to give them credit if anyone knows: How to Handle Dead Horse Projects 1. Appoint a large committee to study the horse – table the confidential report for legal review and evaluation by the Board of Directors 2. Arrange visits to other sites to see how they continue to ride dead horses and cover the smell 3. Create a training session to improve staff riding ability. Stress the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and smiling when confronted by opposition 4. Research and report on the glorious history of dead horses 5. Re-jig the deliverables and declare, “this horse is not dead – it’s just going in another direction” 6. Hire a external contractor to ride it and blame him when it collapses 7. Secure additional funding to show the dead horse is still capable of eating 8. Declare that feeding the dead horse will make it “better, faster and cheaper”. Prove with statistics. 9. Recall that it was a real bargain - the lowest price horse when it was bought 10. Have the dead horse owner and his team invite the malleable opposition to an Innovation Workshop at an off-site resort. Show tons of slides. Break off special interest groups. Regroup to achieve consensus. Feed and water well. Report success. It would be pretty darn fun-

The concern for taxpayers is the cost of the package, that it is to be put in place immediately and that there was little public notice of the proposal - buried in council packages does not count. Typically, pay increases or compensation increases anything above normal cost of living hikes may be approved but implementations are commonly held off until the next term of council. This would allow all who are running to know what they are signing up for. As well, the appearance of giving yourself a big fat bonus would be non-

existent because there is no guarantee a councillor who does approve it would be around to enjoy it. And that is exactly the point. If a compensation package of roughly $17,500 and a $6,000 benefits package gets more and better council candidates running for election West Lincoln is the first municipality that should sign on the dotted line. The mayor’s remuneration comes in just under $30,000 - from the township before any regional dough kicks in - now plus the benefits. Not bad for a part-time gig. It is funny council actually noted that part of their support for approving the package was because there was no hubbub from the general public. Maybe part of the problem is people don’t see the notices the town publishes. Same reason we started getting ads for the road closures coming with power line construction. Call after call came in from people who said they didn’t see any notice. But why put something out there when you really don’t want anyone to see it. Then you can pass motions with little fanfare and say the public didn’t say anything, so it must be ok. Do I need to explain how silly that is? As I say, absolutely no problem with adjusting compensation, although only four of 11 municipalities in Niagara do it. Council should rejig their thinking and launch the benefit with the incoming council.

WL chamber hosts home show If youâ€™re in need of some home improvement ideas, West Lincoln Chamber of Commerceâ€™s Home and Trade Show will be the place to be this weekend. Tomorrow, Friday, from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., the show will run at West Lincoln Arena. â€œThe show has really come together well,â€? said Chamber administrator Pam Haire. â€œWeâ€™ve got a great mix of vendors, nearly 50 in total, and they will cover everything from real estate to garage doors to roof-
