Grimsby whittles budget to 4.35% hike By Mike Williscraft NewsNow After starting its budget process at a projected increase nearing 30 per cent, Grimsby council has shrunk that number to 4.35 per cent after a
series of deliberations. In late March, the increase was narrowed from 10.28 per cent to 7.06 per cent. “The April 17 meeting adjustments brought the levy increase down from the 7.06 per cent
to the final 4.35 per cent,” said Steve Gruninger, Grimsby’s director of finance. To get to that increase level, several additional adjustments were made: • Funding a transporta-
tion capital project (40 km/h road signs) from reserves ($105,000) • Additional interest revenue ($55,500) • Cut to Fire transfers to reserves ($75,000) • Cut to the salary review ($50,000)

The donation will support a new Wellness Centre for palliative care. McNally House Hospice provides much needed care in the final months of a person’s life, but with the McKeil donation today, it can provide services in the community for those who are not imminently dying. Police investigation is continuing after a young offender was apprehended in a stolen car in east Grimsby early Friday.
About 1:25 a.m. 8 District Grimsby uniforms officers responded to the area of Bell Avenue and Park Road in Grimsby. Officers were there
for a suspicious male attempting to enter vehicles. They located a youth sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle. Inside the vehicle, multiple pieces of identification and personal items not in the passenger’s name were located. The young person identified that two additional males were in the vicinity on foot. A K9 unit and uniform officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the outstanding parties. Investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen recently from another Grimsby location. The investigation into the presence of the identification and personal items remains ongoing as police attempt to identify victims.
Police suspect there are numerous victims within the neighbourhood. Anyone believing that their property has been entered and/ or taken is requested to contact police to make an official report. As a result of the investigation, a 17-yearold Hamilton male was arrested and charged with the alleged offence possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Detectives continue to search for two other suspects. Their identities cannot be released under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Detectives continuing their investigation. Grimsby Skating Club finished off its season with a bang. Three skaters qualified for the Skate Ontario STARSkate Provincial Championships in Kingston. Come one, come all It’s a good thing the provincial election will run in May just at the start of the candidate registration process for this Fall’s municipal election. In Niagara West, while he will undoubtedly put in the hustle that got him there, MPP Sam Oosterhoff is in a very likely position to be re-elected. The province-wide competition, though, will be hotly contested for any number of reasons. While that race is more immediate, let’s look right by that to the Oct. 22 municipal race. Opinions on this page have never purported to anoint anyone - at any level - as THE candidate worthy of support. However, the list of those not worthy of support is lengthening with disappointing regularity. The date for candidate registration is May 1. I hope all the incumbents run again. I also hope the deadwood gets tossed out on their respective ears. Grimsby needs a new mayor and at least six new alderman, a complete house cleaning. It matters not who gets in, or the two that are left, but a clean slate is needed to move the town forward in a positive, transparent and inclusive manner. West Lincoln? Similar. New day, new home ahead Yes, it’s true. The front page is quite correct in noting the NewsNow office will be moving. It certainly won’t be far. In fact, I don’t think it could be any closer as we shift about 15 feet east – from back door to back door – to the former vegan restaurant location (most would remember it as Best Little Menu) at 1 Mountain Street. I’ve known we would have to vacate our current home when our fire departmentmandated office renovation went by the month mark with no end in sight. The lost time, cramped quarters in our bat cave and people just not being able to find our back door has had a major negative impact. We are now at the twomonth mark from when we first started to pack and divest ourselves of “stuff” to be able to fit in what was essentially our storage area. I love my staff, flat out love every single one of them. Many people would have walked out the door and not thought twice about it, especially in the last few weeks we’ve had no heat due to the installation of a new system. For a brief recap – as many thought I was spending the money generated by the volunteer pay subscription system – the fire department served my landlord with a work order requiring a fire barrier be put in for the ceiling of our office. This was part of a follow up, progressive, and needed plan to make the old downtown buildings more safe. Nobody can or would argue with that initiative, myself included, even today. Our landlord has been great to work with on this. He has set his schedule,
MIKE WILLISCRAFT and that of trades, to work around our busiest times as it can get pretty loud in here. But, and there always is one, the fire department, the town, whoever, has to be more aware of what they are imposing on anyone in our position. For example, we were already packed up, half moved and had the back rewired for our computer network and phones while the landlord had help for demo set and trades set to follow that when I found out an extension the noted March 9 deadline could be obtained. Good to know, just a little late. There were some other wonky things in terms of timing - a permit approving work was mailed instead of a call being made to say “come pick it up, you’re good to go”. That wasted four days at a point where we still thought the project would take 17-18 days. In hindsight, that does not matter much. No whining. It all had to be done. It’s just too bad I had to be in this spot at this point in time, I guess. It would behoove the town to have some sort of financial impact fund for work of this nature when an occupied property gets
put out in this manner for the good and safety of the community as a whole. Otherwise, the work (although needed) should wait until there is a tenant transition. Enough of that. Onward. We are excited about this move. A) We’ll be collectively coming out of the closet (yes, your giggle of the week); B) This will be our permanent home; C) We don’t need a truck to move as we can go back door to back door; D) I see a special Mountain Block promotion coming this summer. Ok, so I haven’t asked any of the other business owners yet, but come on! It’s a natural. We’ve got us, For Gents Only, The Poor Devil tattoo shop, the soon-to-open Indian Hut restaurant, Wicked Things, The Syndicate and Different Strokes. I’m sure we can come up with something fun and no, I am not forgetting our friends at Stonehouse Whitcomb, either. They are cognizant of doing things tastefully and they would be included if possible. So, good reader, I will have one more column coming at you from our closet. We will be moving items over to the new place over the weekend, finish this edition in our current spot and plan to be operational at 1 Mountain starting next Wednesday, May 2. My staff and I GREATLY appreciate your patience. Without it we would be dead and gone. I am really not sure how or why we have survived all this turmoil. They say you can’t live on love, but it appears a community newspaper can. Thanks to all!
Development in Niagara is devouring foodland: reader Dear Editor, Here in Niagara, a tragedy is being played out. We are losing what is possibly the most productive farmland in Canada under useless housing development, aided and abetted by elected officials and their staff. Niagara north of the escarpment most notably, and large productive pockets atop the escarpment, are being paved over pretty much as fast as developers can do so, instead of being preserved as farmland to grow FOOD on. Once this land is gone, it is GONE. The demand for these McMansions and McTownhouses seems to be driven by Torontonians fleeing their overcrowded and overpriced city for greener pastures – except those green pastures are fast disappearing. Even the escarpment itself is being built over. Where is the Niagara Escarpment Commission? Who is giving the “okay” to all those mansions being built right on the escarpment, notably in Grimsby but elsewhere as well? This great biosphere reserve is in grave danger of becoming a biosphere parking lot. Niagara-on-the-Lake is in danger of becoming Subdivision on the Lake as are St. Davids, and all those little communities. Grimsby might as well amalgamate with Hamilton. Beamsville is a lost cause and Vineland is now squarely in the sights of developers. All the “quaint little towns” these new arrivals are seeking out are soon to become over-developed mass-produced, poorly-
made subdivisions with all the character of a mud puddle. No, scratch that… a mud puddle at least could be fun to play in. This unholy demand will be accommodated in the reasonably-near future by an equally unholy expansion of the GO Service and possibly even Via, and possibly an expansion of the QEW, to drive even more people down here to the ruination of everything they are coming here for. In addition, the levies against developers for services are nowhere near what is needed to maintain them over their lifespan, and most likely do not even cover the costs of installation. Plowing, repairing, and replacing costs are then borne by the general taxpayer, without an accompanying rise in local jobs and industrial/business assessment to offset the costs of servicing housing. The solution, if people MUST come here, is to redirect them to south Niagara and Dunnville areas. The land there is not optimal for most farming, although corn seems to do well. The original 403 development was to go down that way as a shortcut for US truckers to skirt the Great Lakes on the way to Michigan and points west, and was to be a toll highway. What happened to that? Instead, plans are being revived to widen the QEW yet again to meet the artificial demand being created in north Niagara and to speed truckers to Toronto. Who cares about Toronto? Send the GO to south Niagara and upgrade the 406 if you must, and pre-

producing, instead of offering them ridiculously huge prices for their land only to convert it into ridiculously priced housing that no one who currently lives here can afford, while the rest of us have to buy imported instead of local food.
